The inauguration started with an opening prayer by Chaplain, Mr. Paul Ravikumar, and the bible reading by Mr. Ashok Karunakaran. Dr. Ronald Carey, Associate Head, Pharmacy Services, welcomed the dignitaries and the pharmacists with a brief note on the significant role of pharmacists in healthcare system.

Dr. J.V. Peter, Director, CMC, released the badge, posters and greeting cards for distribution to the pharmacists and appreciated the quality work by the pharmacists in the face of an ever-increasing number of patients in our hospital. Dr. Ebor Jacob, Deputy Medical Superintendent distributed prizes to the winners of “Quiz Contest”held on 22nd September to commemorate the Pharmacist Day. The pharmacists representing

'S' pharmacy, Main Pharmacy and MHC pharmacy won 1st, 2nd and 3rd positions respectively.

Educational Activities

Workshop on "Cardiac Emergencies" The Departments of “Medical Surgical Nursing Specialty–II and “CNE & Research” of College of Nursing organized a one day workshop titled “Cardiac Emergencies” on 19th September, 2017. Dr. Ommen K. George, Professor and Head of Department of Cardiology was the Chief Guest for the occasion. Dr. Selva Titus Chacko, Dean, College of Nursing and Dr. Premila Lee, Nursing Superintendent felicitated the gathering. There were a total of 50 participants from CMC and other institution. The workshop included lectures, discussions on topics ranging from cardiac assessment and invasive monitoring, cardiac emergencies, cardiac arrhythmias, immediate management of acute coronary syndrome, heart blocks and clinical pathways in cardiac emergencies. Skill stations enabled participants to actively practice 12 lead ECG and identify various rhythms, defibrillation & cardio version. The feedback from the participants revealed that the topics were very useful and skill stations were challenging.

Training of Trainers Programme (TOT) at Departments of Clinical Virology and Clinical Microbiology A 5 day Training of Trainers programme was conducted on Laboratory Document Management, Internal Quality Control and External Quality Assurance for the staff from National STI and AIDS Control Program (NSACP), Sri Lankawhich is responsible for coordinating, planning and implementation of the STD, HIV, and AIDS programs in the country. This was done jointly by the Departments of Clinical Virology and Clinical Microbiology, CMC Vellore,from18th to 22nd September 2017. This programme was supported by the U.S. President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), India through Christian Medical Association of India (CMAI) as the implementing partner. The programme started on September 18th morning with a prayer by Rev. Pearson, and inauguration by Dr.Dolly Daniel, Associate Director, CMC Vellore who lighted the lamp along with other dignitaries. Dr.Anu George from CMAI briefed the group on objectives of this workshop.Drs. Asha Mary Abraham Professor Clinical Virology, V. Balaji, Prof. and Head of Clinical Microbiology and Rajesh K, Prof and Head of Clinical Virology, also spoke on the occasion. There were 11 participants of whom 6 were medical laboratory technologists (MLTs), 2 Public health laboratory technologists (PHLTs) and three consultants of both Microbiology and Venereology from the NSACP. There were presentations and hands-on training on different aspects in these 5 daysby faculty from Virology, Microbiology and Parasitology. This included laboratory documentation, IQCs preparation & validation for differenttests like serology, molecular assays, staining and smears. Calibration and maintenance of important equipment were demonstrated along with a detailed discussion on the EQA programme. They visited the ART centre and Departmentof Dermatology and Venereology. They also had a session on laboratory information management system and a visit to the Department of Transfusion Medicine and Immunohematology to observe data management.During the closing session on 22nd September, there was a presentation of the Sri Lankan experience by Dr. Jayanthi. P Elwitigala, Consultant Microbiologist at National Reference Laboratory (NRL), Colombo. She was very thankful for the help and support offered by the CMC, CDC/PEPFAR and CMAI in strengthening the labs for accreditation in Sri Lanka. The feedback from the participants wasvery encouraging.

One day CME and Workshop on "Update in Labour Analgesia"

The need of labour analgesia services was emphasised by both anaesthesiologists and obstetricians. The labour analgesia services were revisited by Department in 2016 which made significant impact on the efficiency of services with five fold improvement in outcomes in one year.

The Department of Anaesthesia conducted a one day CME and workshop on “Update in Labour Analgesia” on 23rd September 2017 at Jacob Chandy hall in Paul brand building. The CME and workshop highlighted the importance of pain free delivery.

The organising team consisted of chairperson - Dr. Sajan Philip George, Secretary - Dr. Ekta Rai and scientific committee chairman- Dr.Anita Shirley. 10 credit points were awarded to delegates.

This CME is a step towards the awareness about labour analgesia among medical fraternity. Half day workshop highlighted better resuscitation of pregnant mother along with using ultrasound for screening of vertebrae and trouble shooting complications. The CME was a great success and the delegates went back enriched by the talks and the hands on experience. 2

Advanced Life Support in Obstetrics A two-day provider certification courses on 'Advanced Life Support in Obstetrics' was conducted on 11th to 12th September, 2017 by the Nursing Superintendent’s Office and the Obstetrics and Gynaecological nursing department. The faculty, charge nurses / tutors and postgraduate students of the OBG nursing department participated. The certificate was awarded by the American Academy of family physicians (AAFP) in collaboration with GVK Emergency Management & Research Institute, Secunderabad after the thirty participants went through a series of lectures, hands on drill, theory and mega delivery practical examination.

Awards for Patient Friendly OPDs and Wards - 2015 & 2016 The award ceremony for the best patient friendly wards, OPDs and MROs of both private and general category during the year 2015 and 2016 based on OP and IP feedback was held on 19th September 2017 by Quality Management Cell, Directorate. Dr. Sunil Chandy, our formerDirector was the chief guest and graced the occasion. The ceremony started with prayer by Mr. Raja, Chaplain. Dr. Santosh Varughese, Deputy Director (HR & Quality) welcomed the august gathering.

The dignitaries present were former Director Dr. Sunil Chandy, Director Dr. J.V. Peter, Medical Superintendent Dr. Prasad Mathews, Deputy Nursing Superintendent Mrs. Florence Sekaran, Deputy Director (HR & Quality) Dr. Santosh Varughese and Chaplain, Mr. Raja.

The ceremony also witnessed an array of HODs, HOUs, medical fraternity, nursing fraternity, managers, OPD and Floor Supervisors, clerical staff, hospital attendants and housekeeping staff.

The report and the method of selection were presented by Mr. Rabindranath, Audit Facilitation Officer.

OP feedback is collected in five languages using a five point rating scale and IP feedback in six languages using a ten point rating scale by a team of dedicated feedback staff and management interns in OP and with the help of charge nurses and ward clerks in IP. Data is collated at the completion of the year. Various parameters are considered during the process using a scoring system while a weightage is given for patient load as well. Data regarding MROs are collated separately based on the OP feedback parameters. The winners were announced by Dr. Lallu Joseph, Quality Manager. The Prizes and certificates were distributed by the dignitaries.
