This year, the Occupational Health team under the Directorate (HR), with the assistance of the Department of Hospital Management Studies & Staff Training and Development, decided to celebrate Occupational Health Week from 24th to 29th April, 2017.

One-hour sessions were organised for each day of the week, based on the theme Nurture your Posture, to educate all staff (doctors, nurses, technical and non-technical staff, administrative staff, clerical staff, hospital attendants and housekeeping attendants) on basic ergonomics and the right posture at workplace.

Basic warm-up exercises to prevent back pain and related complications were also taught during this time.

Nearly 800 staff attended these sessions and were benefitted.

The sessions were led by Dr. Reginald Alex, Coordinator, Occupational Health and faculty from Back School, Dr. Judy Ann John, Professor Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation (PMR) and VicePrincipal (AHS), Mr. Sanjeev Padankatti, Reader (AHS), PMR, Mr. Lenny Vasanthan, Lecturer (AHS), PMR, and their team.

An essay and poster competition was conducted on the same theme, which also drew strong participation.

The programme completed successfully on 28th April, 2017, with a valedictory function. This ceremony began with a word of prayer by Mr. Lenny Vasanthan and Dr. Joe Flemming welcomed the gathering.

On 29th, April, 2017, a Quality Circle on the theme of the week, Nurture your Posture, was conducted. Dr. Henry Prakash, Professor, PMR, delivered an enlightening talk titled Motions and Emotions of Back and Dr. Venkatesh, Professor, Orthopaedic Spinal Disorders on Carving the Back – A Surgeon’s Perspective. Dr. Raji Thomas, Professor and Head, PMR, moderated these sessions, which saw a considerable number of CMC staff in attendance.

The Occupational Health activity and celebration received the constant support and encouragement of Dr. Deepak Abraham, Associate Director (HR). The programme’s success was ensured by Dr. Samuel N.J. David, Sr. Manager and Head of the Department of Hospital Management Studies & Staff Training and Development, and his team, who helped coordinate the week-long event.

Continuing Nursing Education in Rehabilitation for Staff Nurses The Department of Medical Surgical Nursing Specialty IV (Rehabilitation Nursing) and Continuing Nursing Education (CNE) & Research Departments of the College of Nursing (CON) organised a workshop on 28th April, 2017 titled Rehabilitation: Nursing Care Challenges. This workshop focused on the various needs of patients with disability, the importance of a multidisciplinary team approach, and the role of nurses in different aspects of care.

Mr. T. S. Ravikumar, Head, Medical Surgical Nursing Speciality IV, welcomed the gathering. Dr. George Tharian, Professor and Head, Physical Medicine & Rehabiliation (PMR) Department, delivered his address as chief guest, bringing to light the role played by a nurse in rehabilitation. The felicitations offered by Dr. Vinitha Ravindran, Deputy Dean, and Dr. Premila Lee, Nursing Superintendent. Mrs. Josephine Sukumaran, Professor, CON and the Organising Secretary, provided a brief orientation of the programme.

The workshop was attended by 55 nurses from the south of India. Eminent speakers from the multidisciplinary team including doctors, physiotherapist, speech therapist, and rehabilitation nurses delivered lectures, explaining the current trends in rehabilitation to improve the quality of life of patients with disability.

The programme facilitated skill demonstrations on procedures like management of pressure ulcer, bladder and bowel management, enhancing mobility, and the use the various adoptive devices.

The programme was accredited with 8 credit hours from the Tamil Nadu Nurses and Midwives Council.

A summer sports coaching camp for children of CMC staff was conducted successfully in the month of April 2017. More than 140 children participated and were coached in Basketball, Badminton, Football and Hockey, in evening sessions held at the College Campus, Bagayam.

A valedictory function to formally conclude the programme, was conducted on 2nd May, 2017. Dr. Anna B. Pulimood, Principal, was present as the chief guest and distributed certificates to the participants.

Following a vote of thanks the annual camp drew to a close.

• Dr. Mathew J Chandy, former Head of the Department of Neurological Sciences and Professor of Neurosurgery, received the Lifetime Achievement Award, for his contribution to Neurosurgery by the newly formed Tamil Nadu and Pondicherry Association of Neurosurgeons.

A CMC Vellore Alumnus of the1960 MBBS batch, he completed MS in General Surgery from Madras Medical College and then took the MCh Neurosurgery course at CMC Vellore in April 1974. He left CMC in 1975 and returned in 1980, after working abroad in the Montreal Neurological Institute.

He was instrumental in the introduction of the microscope for neurosurgical operations and training of residents in microsurgical procedures. During his headship, he was instrumental in establishing neurointensive care, clinical neurophysiology (intraoperative monitoring), a separate division of neuropathology, and the extensive use of computers in the department. He encouraged the initiation of stereotactic surgical procedures and radiosurgery, and promoted clinical research and publications.

He has mentored many generations of students in the field of Neurosurgery, especially from CMC Vellore, who now hold senior posts in departments nationally, as well as internationally.

• Dr. Sunil J. Holla, Professor of Anatomy is the co-editor of Gray's Anatomy for Students - First South Asian Adaptation published by Elsevier and released by S.C. Parija, Director of JIPMER, Puducherry, on April 19, 2017.

• Dr. Gaurab Majumdar, PG Registrar, Department of Ophthalmology, won the 3rd prize in the AIOS PG Quiz (H K Tiwari Gold Medal Examination) at the Annual Conference of AIOS held in Jaipur on 15th February, 2017.

• Dr. Suceena Alexander, Professor, Department of Nephrology, was awarded the title of Fellow of American Society of Nephrology.

• Dr. Christina Marie Joseph, PG Registrar, Orthopaedics, was awarded the Best Paper Presentation at the 7th Annual Conference of AO Trauma India held in Chennai from 28th to 30th April, 2017.

Retirements Ms. J. Prema, Sr. Gr. MPHW, CSSD, who joined CMC in 1982, began her retirement on 6th April, 2017, on completion of 35 years of service. She has previously served in the Ida Scudder Ward, OPD, Accident & Emergency Department, and Surgical Nursing Department.

Mrs. Regina Joseph, Sr. Gr.I Clerk Typist, after rendering 35 years of service, retired on 22nd April, 2017. Her husband, Mr. Joseph Abraham, is a retired Sub-Inspector and they have two daughters: Mrs. Joy Sherwin, a Junior Lecturer at the College of Nursing, and Ms. Rachel Beulah, a Senior Demonstrator at the Department of Developmental Paediatrics.

The CMC Community bids them a blessed farewell, acknowledging their many years of commitment to the institution.

Mr. Gowthamabalan, Hospital Attendant Gr.III, Personnel Department (Relief Pool), departed to be with the Lord on 25th April, 2017. He joined CMC in 1991.

He is survived by a son and a daughter. His son, Mr. Chitharthan currently serves his bond as X-ray Technician, and his daughter is in her 11th Grade.

3 Our thoughts and prayers are with the bereaved members of the family at this timeof grief and loss.
