Indicators and the preparations towards Nursing Excellence.

The reunion provided a perfect platform for the students to meet with the alumni and learn from their experiences which created a special bond between those who had passed out of the portals of this institution and the students who are yet to establish themselves in the outside world.

he Alumni Reunion of the College of Nursing was held on 14 th of July 2017. The reunion began with the inaugural programme where the Director, Dr. Sunil Chandy presented the institution and offered a glimpse of where CMC stands at this point emphasizing on the ways in which the institution has made an impact and strengthened traditions over the years. During the business session the Dean and the President of Alumni Association, Dr. Selva Titus Chacko presented the College of Nursing. The Nursing Superintendent, Dr. Premila Lee presented a summary of recent nursing care initiatives, Nursing Care Quality

The inaugural function which was held on the 21st evening began with a prayer by Rev. Pearson. The Head of the Department and organising Chairperson Dr. Rajesh Kannagi addressed the chiefguests. The welcome was given by Dr. Mahesh Moorthy, Organizing secretary, followed by the felicitation by the Director Dr. Sunil Chandy.

The Principal Dr. Anna B Pulimood, Dr. C.E. Eapen, Medical Superintendent, Dr. Shobha Broor, IAMM National President, Dr. G. Jayalakshmi, President IAMM Tamil Nadu Chapter and Dr. T. Jacob John and Dr. G. Sridharan, former heads of the Department of Clinical Virology, CMC Vellore graced the occasion. Following this, the keynote address was given by Dr. Soumya Swaminathan, Secretary, Department of Health Research and Director General of the Indian Council of Medical Research. She pointed out the importance of Virology and the relevance of virologists in public health and research as most new emerging diseases is viral infections. Dr. Swaminathan also mentioned the several steps taken to tackle the emergence of new vectors, new ways of transmission and also described the expansion of network of laboratories for the surveillance of fever cases across India. She also urged the conference organizers to submit a consensus list on Virology research priorities to the ICMR towards a focused course of action for the future.

The lectures were followed by an oral and poster presentation by students for which the prizes were given away by Dr. Japyaprakash Muliyil, former Principal CMC, Vellore and Dr. Gangandeep Kang, Director THSTI, Faridabad, Delhi. A short entertainment by the batch of 2014 and 2015 was organized to lighten the mood for the evening.

Eleventh Fieldhouse –Myers Oration The Fieldhouse –Myers Oration is conducted by the Department of Clinical Virology to honor the memory of Professor Ruth Myers, the founder head of the department of Microbiology at CMC, and her close friend Ms. Jeanette Fieldhouse. Professor Myers developed the diagnostic services and pursued her research interest in beta hemolytic streptococci and arboviruses. Following her passing in 2001, her friend, the now late Ms. Jeanette Fieldhouse, bequeathed a sum of money in memory of Professor Myers to support academic activities by the Departments of Clinical Microbiology and Clinical Virology.

Dr. Carr explained the immunopathogeneis of dengue virus infection with special emphasis on the effect of the sphingosine kinase (SK1)/sphingosine-1-phosphate (S1P) system on human vasculature and in vitro models.

SK activity is promoted during the early part of the infection and then is reduced. She also showed how SK influences dengue virus (DENV) induced interferon responses and the reduction in S1P in sera from DENV-infected patients and cells in vitro. She further explained how an immunomodulatory sphingosine analogue, FTY720 was shown to reduce, late inflammatory and IFN stimulated responses in dengue infection, with no major effect on DENV replication. The Principal of CMC, Dr. Anna B. Pulimood, gave away the citation and award to Dr. Carr.

The 11 th Fieldhouse-Myers oration for this year was delivered by Dr. Jill Carr, Department of Microbiology and Infectious Diseases, Flinders University, Adelaide, Australia on 21st of July 2017. After having obtained BSc (Hons) and PhD from the Department of Biochemistry at the University of Adelaide in 1996 she was immersed in the study of dengue virus replication and host responses and has a research laboratory investigating dengue and Zika viruses with a focus on their interactions with macrophages and responses in the endothelium, including innate responses such as interferon and complement systems.

Workshop on Good Start Practices (GSP) for CD4+T cell estimation and blood collection A workshop on the topic “Good Start Practices (GSP) for CD4+T cell estimation and blood collection” was conducted by the Department of Clinical Virology (National HIV Reference Laboratory), CMC in collaboration with National AIDS Control Organization (NACO), BD India, on 10th -13th July, 2017. The laboratory technologists from ART Centers in Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Kerala benefited from this workshop.

Seminar on Leadership As part of a human resource development exercise, a Leadership Seminar titled “Lead like Jesus” was organised by the institution seminar for senior faculty and staff on the 28th and 29th July, 2017.

The resource persons for the seminar were Mr. Mohan Patnaik (Global Head of Operations at Thomson Reuters), Mr. Rajesh Lele (Head of HR Digital for TATA Motors) and Mr. Samuel Seelan (Site Director and Head of IT for GE Appliances), who based the modules on the book "Lead like Jesus" written by Ken Blanchard, Phil Hodges and Phyllis Hendry. The seminar was held with the aim of equipping faculty and staff for leadership roles within the institution.

The RPSGT designation represents the "gold standard" in sleep technology: a commitment to the highest standard of professionalism and patient care.

Her husband Mr. Subash Babu is working as a Hospital Attendant in Electrical Department. Mrs. Josephine Ravi, Sr. Gr. MPHW retired on 1 st July 2017 after 31 years of service in this institution. Her husband Mr. Ravi is working in Pravaham.
