conducted the Revised Basic Course Workshop (RBCW) from 2nd to 4th August, 2016 followed by a Sensitisation Programme for Attitude and Communication Module (AT-COM ) on 5th August, 2016. The objective of the programme was to sensitise the participants to the

programme aimed to guide trainers to capacitate medical educators of the 20 affiliated medical colleges to MCI Nodal centre, CMC Vellore. This programme was given 8 CME credit hours from Tamilnadu State Medical Council.

he Centre for Stem Cell Research (CSCR, a unit of inStem, Bengaluru) organised the First Annual Symposium on Cell and Gene Therapy on 5th and 6th August, 2016. The programme brought together scientists, physicians and several others interested in and responsible for developing this field in the country. Supported by the Department of Biotechnology (DBT) and Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), the symposium this year focussed on cell and gene therapy in haematological disorders, ocular disorders, skin and musculoskeletal conditions, and cancer

The key note address was delivered by Prof. Michele De Luca, who discussed the evolution of epithelial stem cell therapy for skin diseases. The second day of the symposium featured various discussions on cell therapy for ocular disorders and genome editing. The proceedings were streamed live to the NCBS / inStem campus in Bengaluru so that a wider range of participants could be accommodated. This facilitated viewing of the presentations in real time and encouraged active participation. CSCR plans to hold similar conferences on an annual basis to help promote this area of research in India through cross-discipline dialogue and collaborations on a diverse range of inter-connected issues relevant to the field.

Cer vical and Oral Cancer Prevention Project covers more ground In a mission to roll out the Cervical and Oral Cancer Project, RUHSA, Christian Medical College organised a training workshop from 18th to 20th July, 2016 at Mungeli Christian Hospital, Chhattisgarh led by Dr. Anil Henry. This project is supported by Global Innovation Initiative, UK and implemented in partnership with the University of Edinburgh, Cornell University, US, Medic Mobile, India and Distance Education Unit, CMC. The objective of the workshop was to initiate a feasible community cancer screening programme at Mungeli Christian Hospital for the most common cancers in India – Oral and Cervical. The Resource persons for the workshop were Dr. Rita Isaac, Professor and Head, RUHSA Department, Dr. Rabin Chacko, Professor and Head, Dental Department, Dr. Biswajit Paul, Associate Professor, RUHSA, Dr. Jachin Velavan, In-charge, Distance Education, and Ms. Shreya Bhatt, Medic Mobile India. Participants of the workshop included Dental surgeons, Gynaecologists, Medical Officers and Nurses from Mungeli Christian Hospital, Evangelical Mission Hospital, Tilda and a local private practitioner in Chattisgarh. The health workers’ training included the ‘Mitanins’ from the public health sector system and Community College nursing students from the Mungeli hospital. The interactive workshop featured practical sessions on Visual Inspection methods for cervical and oral cancer screening, Cryotherapy, and tobacco habit cessation counselling. The highlight of the proposed cancer screening initiative at Mungeli Hospital will be the use of recently launched USAID supported mobile health unit with in-built facilities for community cancer screening.

The Department of Hospital Management Studies and Staff Training and Development (HMSSTD) conducted the first set of contact classes for the 25th Batch of M.Phil (HHSM) participants, from 4th to 30th July, 2016. M. Phil in Hospital and Health Systems Management (HHSM) is a 4-semester Work Integrated Learning Programme, conducted in collaboration with Birla Institute of Technology and Science (BITS), Pilani, Christian Medical College (CMC), Vellore and Bombay Hospital, Mumbai, featuring 4 weeks of intensive contact sessions in Vellore/Mumbai during the first semester and in Pilani, during the second semester. The first contact classes began with prayer by Ms. Saramma Kuruvilla, Sr. Chaplain. Dr. Samuel N.J. David,Sr. Manager and Head, HMSSTD welcomed the batch, motivating them to be ethical leaders who contribute to development of healthcare in the country, following which Dr. Anil Kuruvilla, Assoc. Director (Admin.), highlighted special features of the M.Phil (HHSM) programme which are relevant for all hospital administrators and key players in healthcare.

Dr. Alfred Job Daniel, Principal, encouraged the participants to make the most of this contact programme and implement it in their respective workplaces, while taking with them the flavour of CMC. The contact classes, taught by various intramural and extramural faculty, were attended by 24 participants representing leading organisations such as CMC Vellore, Believers Church Medical College Hospital, Apollo Specialty Hospitals, Narayana Hrudayalaya Limited, Rabindranath Tagore International Institute of Cardiac Sciences, Narayana Hrudayalaya Limited, Wockhardt Hospital Ltd., Philips India Ltd., Bethany Hospital, Lotus Eye Hospital and Institute, Public Health Foundation of India and so on. A Thanksgiving ceremony was organised by the M.Phil (HHSM) participants at the end of the course, during which a memento was presented in appreciation of the organisers and faculty who taught their classes. Obituary: Mrs. Eirene Mills (nee James) entered eternal rest on 18th August, 2016. She was sent to Vellore by the Methodist Missionary Society as Chief Pharmacist and lecturer to medical students. She worked as a pharmacist at CMC from 1946 to 1956, when Dr. Cochrane was Director and Rev. James Mc Gilvray, General Superintendent. In 1956, she returned to England, where she remained Secretary of the Bournemouth Branch of the Friends of Vellore for many years. During this time, she and her husband, John raised many funds for CMC, arranging an annual garden party and a Bournemouth concert. Our thoughts and prayers are with the bereaved members of her family at this time of grief and loss.

Memoranda Dr. C.E. Eapen, Professor is appointed as Head of the Division of Gastrointestinal Sciences with effect from 16 th August, 2016 for a four year term. Dr. Sitara Swarna Rao Ajjampur, Professor is appointed as Acting Head of Wellcome Trust Research Laboratory with effect from 16th August, 2016 until further notice. Dr. Paul V. George, Professor will continue as Head of the Department of Cardiology till the return of Dr. Oommen K. George from sabbatical leave.

Milestones of Achievements The departments of Gynaecologic Oncology, Colorectal Surgery and Medical Oncology carried out CMC’s first procedure on the Hyperthermic IntraPeritoneal Chemotherapy (HIPEC) machine in May 2016 on a patient with recurrent mucinous carcinoma. The entire procedure of cytoreductive surgery and chemotherapy lasted about 10 hours. Chemotherapy was instilled at 42 Celsius with the abdomen open (Colliseum technique). The machine was rented and may be bought after a few more cases are done.

Retirements Mr. G. Srinivassan, Hospital Housekeeping Attendant Gr. I, Hospital Maintenance, who became a part of CMC in 1988, obtained voluntary retirement on 15th April, 2016 after 26 years of service to the institution. Mrs. A. Sampangi, Hospital Attendant Gr. I, Maternity Ward, completed 25 years of service to CMC since 1990, when she joined. She obtained voluntary retirement on 1st May, 2016. Sampangi has three sons: her eldest, Mr. Muralidharan is a Hospital Attendant in Laundry, her second son, Mr. Sridhar is a MRO in Urology OPD and her youngest, Mr. Prabhakaran is a Cardiothoracic Technician in Chennai. Erratum: The date of voluntary retirement of Mrs. K. Latha, Secretary, Gr. II, Medical Oncology, mentioned as 4th July, 2016 in the previous issue of CMC Newsline (Vol. 54, Issue 08, published on 22nd August, 2016) to be read as 31st August, 2016. Their services to the institution are gratefully appreciated by the CMC community, as they enter a blessed retirement.
