s. Mahendri N.V., Head of Dietetics, retired on 16th April, 2017, after 23 years of service to this institution. Having completed her M. Sc in Food and Nutrition from Mysore University in 1980, she joined CMC as Dietitian Grade IV in 1994.

During her tenure as Head of the Department of Dietetics since 2001, Ms. Mahendri brought in many changes to the functioning of the department.

Her area of interest in Nutrition and Dietetics is Paediatric and Geriatric Nutrition. She underwent Training in Nutrition Assessment for HIV Adult and Paediatric Population at the Tufts University, Boston, USA (Fogarty) in the year 2006. Besides regular teaching programmes for the M.Sc. and B.Sc. student nurses, she took up teaching of Dietetics students as well;

she has also played pivotal roles in the Hospital: CSI Jeyaraj Annapackiam Hospital, Palayamkottai and others Journal Clubs and case presentations, which are regular activities in the Sunday Services : April 30, 2017 6.00 pm : Scudder Auditorium department.

Ms. Mahendri was actively involved in several projects, occasionally in the capacity of a co-investigator. Her prolific work has found its way into several reputed national as well as international journals.

During her service, Ms. Mahendri was especially successful in reaching out to the community through Nutrition Education and Nutrition Awareness programmes for the public; she brought out educational pamphlets and information brochures in plenty.

She was just as instrumental in organising the first Enteral Nutrition Workshop in the institution in 2012,

Department of OG Nursing observes Safe Motherhood Day Safe Motherhood and staff from Obstetrics and N ational Day was celebrated by the Gynecological Nursing and Community Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecological (OG) Nursing on April 11th 2017, under the theme Quality Equity Dignity for Improved Maternal Health.

Various competitions were conducted to promote the theme the previous week,

Besides this, she was invited to be on the Expert Committee for drafting the syllabus for M.Sc. in Clinical Nutrition, at the Dr. MGR Medical University, Chennai.

As a colleague, mentor and involved dietitian, she will always be remembered for her sensitivity towards her fellow workers and her patients. CMC is grateful to Ms. Mahendri for her outstanding contribution to the department and wishes her Godspeed in her future.

Mrs. Ebenezer Ellen Benjamin, Professor and Head of OG Nursing, opened the programme with a few words of welcome, following which Dr. Annie Regi, Professor and Head of Obstetrics and Gynaecology Department, and the guest of honour, addressed the gathering. Mrs. Florence Segaran, Deputy Nursing Superintendent, offered her felicitations, and Mrs. Emily Daniel, Additional Deputy Dean, distributed prizes to winners of the contests.

The exhibition was unveiled by Mrs. Annapoorna, a retired staff of the Maternity Department. The gathering then proceeded to view the informative stalls, which were jointly put up by the OG Nursing, Dietary and Physiotherapy Departments, exclusively based on the subject of motherhood.

Continuing Medical Education in ENT Care for Staff and Students On 25 th March, 2017, a CME encompassing ENT Care in the Community was organised by the Ear, Nose & Throat (ENT) Department. It was held in memory of erstwhile professor and friend, Dr. George Ani Mathew, a visionary and bold surgeon, a confidante and beloved mentor to many, both within and outside the ENT Department.

The CME began with a word of prayer and a welcome address, opening the forum for the ten sessions of the day. All ten sessions were well planned, and covered a variety of topics relevant to both general and specialist ENT. Dr. Ajay Philip led a discussion on early detection of head and neck cancer, following which Dr. Rajan Sundaresan made his presentation on skull base osteomyelitis, an often overlooked condition common in elderly diabetics. Dr. Naina Picardo then unpacked the management of common ENT problems in the community, after which Dr. Lalee Varghese addressed the common complaints of epistaxis and nasal foreign bodies, and Dr. Regi Kurien addressed another common ENT condition, allergic rhinitis, as well as acute invasive fungal sinusitis - an ENT emergency. In addition, Dr. Syed Kamran Asif and Dr. Sheth Meet Chetan held sessions that explored the primary management of ear conditions, and the often ignored symptom, dysphonia, respectively. The last talk of the day was on voice etiquette, by the Professor and Head of ENT, Dr. Rita Ruby Albert.

The topics were well-received and useful to the many general practitioners, practicing ENT doctors, postgraduates, nurses, and allied staff who attended – around ninety in all. Five credit points were awarded to this programme by the Tamil Nadu Dr MGR Medical University.

World Health Day was observed by the Departments of Community Health Nursing and Psychiatric Nursing through a programme on 7th April, 2017, at the College of Nursing. The theme this year was Depression – Let’s Talk It. Dr. Anna Tharyan, Professor and Head of Psychiatry Unit – II, the chief guest, emphasised various strategies to overcome depression and to strengthen health professionals in assessing and caring for patients and co-workers.

• Dr. Ruby Angeline Pricilla, Associate Professor, LCECU, and Ms. Anita Rebecca S, Tutor, Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, have beeb awarded the Kansas University Medical Centre-Modale Junior Faculty Research Fellowship-2017. They will proceed to the University of Kansas Medical Centre and undergo training for a whole semester in the areas of their interest.

• Mrs. Bala Seetharaman, Professor, College of Nursing, attended the convocation programme organised by the Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences, Karnataka, on completion of her Ph.D.

Retirements Having been a part of CMC from 1st September, 1982, Mrs. Darathy Vasudevan, Sr. Gr.I Clerk Typist, Forensic Medicine, retired from service of 34 years, on 4th April, 2017.

She is a mother of two: her son, Mr. G.V. Vasanth is a Hospital Attendant in ‘Q’ Block and her daughter, Ms. Ruth Deeva has completed her DMRT in CMC. Ms. Saraswathi P, Health Aid Gr.I, retired on 5th April, 2017. She worked in the Community Health Department for 33 years, from 1st October, 1984 to 3rd March, 2017. Her daughter, Kotteswari works as a Ward Sister in the Paediatric HDU. The CMC Community is thankful for their services rendered and wishes them a blessed retirement.

Obituary Mrs. Grace Annammal Manuel, mother of Dr. Anandan Manuel, (Anaesthetist, CHAD), mother-in-law of Mrs. Jasmine Ruby, (Prof. College of Nursing), and grandmother of Dr. Corrine and Ms. Sheryl (Batch of 2015) on 19th April, 2017.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the bereaved members of the family at this timeof grief and loss.
