Transfusion Medicine Facilitates NACO-NBTC Blood Transfusion Services Training Programme

Pulmonary Medicine: Dr. D.J. Christopher and Staff Dr. Balamugesh T. and Staff Mrs. Beulah Premkumar and Staff

The Department of Transfusion Medicine, in partnership with Endocrinology :Dr. Nihal Jacob Thomas and Staff CMAI and CHAI has been awarded a PEPFAR grant, through CDC, Dr. Thomas V. Paul and Staff to work with the Government to improve national blood transfusion Mrs. Beulah Premkumar and Staff services. One of the important areas where they work as a technical partner with CMAI is to provide assistance to the National Aids Sunday Services : May 29, 2016 Control Organisation (NACO) and the National Blood Transfusion 6.00 pm : Exam Hall Building Council (NBTC) for capacity building. During this workshop series, Dr. C.E. Eapen they provided their expertise to assess their training centres and 6.30 pm : Hospital Chapel revise the training content with updated modules and audiovisual Dr. Sunil Abraham material for all levels of Blood Bank staff, with the support of experts from around the country. CMC was also designated as an Apex Day to remember : training centre for the South with the aim of providing the latest Death Anniversary of Dr. Ida Sophia Scudder - May 24 knowledge and promoting good blood bank practices.

The Department of Transfusion Medicine conducted 7 workshops between November 2015 and March 2016 at CMC, for blood bank personnel from different NACO-supported blood banks across Tamil Nadu and Andaman. Of these, 2 workshops were for medical officers, 2 for blood bank nurses and 3 for laboratory technicians.

Structured modules for training were provided to all trainees and power point presentations on carefully chosen topics were taught.

Approximately 145 trainees attended these workshops.

More than 20 department staff members including doctors, senior blood bank technicians and demonstrators, blood bank nurses and quality managers were actively involved in the training process.

The national blood policy, donor selection and deferral status, blood camp organisation, blood grouping, cross-matching, antibody testing, transfusion-transmitted infections, biosafety and biomedical waste management, blood components, blood bank licensing, quality control and documentation were some of the topics reviewed.

Interactive sessions and group tasks were included to make the programme more effective.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the bereaved members of the families at this time of grief and loss.

Apart from lectures on a wide array of topics, blood bank visits and demonstrations of important test procedures were carried out during the afternoons of the workshop. The trainees were presented opportunities to understand the functioning of the CMC blood bank, raise and clarify doubts. In general, a positive feedback was received on this initiative.

The workshop series proved to be an enriching experience both for the trainees as well as the trainers from the department of Transfusion Medicine. The department thanked the CDC, CMAI, and NACO for the opportunity and the administration for its support.

Occupational Health Education Series - Segment IV This week's module from the Occupational Health Team is continued from the previous issue of the Newsline on exercises to forestall pain in the lower back region.

Outpatient Dietary Clinic Relocated The outpatient Dietary Clinic, earlier located adjacent to Cardiology General OPD, has been relocated to the basement of the Main Building, adjacent to Orthopaedics OPD. It was dedicated on May 12th, 2016, with a prayer by Rev. Arul Dhas and a hymn by the Dietary Staff.

Dr. Raju Titus Chacko, Associate Director, Dr. Premila Lee, Nursing Superintendent, and Ms. Mahendri N.V, Head, Dietary, declared it open.

Dr. C.E. Eapen, Medical Superintendent, welcomed the gathering, adding a brief about the new space and thanked all those involved in the shifting process. Ms. Mahendri N.V. gave an overview of the facility, following which Dr. Raju Titus Chacko and Dr.Premila Lee offered felicitations.

Training in Occupational Health The Department of Hospital Management Studies & Staff Training and Development co-ordinated with the Occupational Health Team in CMC to facilitate the celebration of Occupational Health Week from 25th to 29th April, 2016, in the Norman Auditorium for around 120 CMC staff. From the one-hour sessions held, the following guidelines have been foregrounded: • Chance takers are accident makers at work - Compliance with safety rules of the institution can save more than just injuries.

• Keep your posture at the top of your mind - It is important to be ergonomically aware at one's work station and regularly practice preventive exercise routines to keep back pain at bay.

• Be hand in glove with noise, physical, chemical and road safety.

• Coping with work stress and overcome substance abuse is about mind over matter.

• Holistic health comes from balancing one's professional, family, financial and nutritional wellness.

New Fuji Digital Radiography Machine Dedicated The new Fuji Digital Radiography machine was dedicated by Rev. Hamar on 17th May, 2016 in the main OPD building basement, adjacent to the Ortho. OPD. The facility was declared open by Dr. Raju Titus Chacko, Associate Director, and the gathering was welcomed by Dr. C. E. Eapen, Medical Superintendent. Dr. Shyamkumar N. Keshava, Head, Radiology, presented a brief about the new service. This machine like others in the G11 OPD area, provides high quality “digital radiography”. Equipment wise, it is user friendly and generates images quickly. The Orthopaedic patients on POP cast, especially those on wheel chairs and stretchers will be benefited the most by the ability to take radiographs at the same level and near their OPD, enabling shorter TurnAround Time (TAT) and return to their consulting doctors. Dr. V. T. K. Titus, Head, Ortho-II, Ms. Florence Segaran, Deputy Nursing Superintendent & OR in-charge and Mr. Sukumar Solomon, Associate General Superintendent greeted the department. The programme was attended by many from Orthopaedics, OPD and MRD departments.

4th CEE by the Department of Hospital Management Studies & Staff Training & Development The Department of Hospital Management Studies and Staff Training and Development conducted the fourth Continuing Engineering Education (CEE) on 29th February, 2016. The proceedings began with a word of prayer by Mrs. Sonia Valas, Officer (Administration) and followed by a welcome address and introductory remarks by Dr. Samuel N.J. David, Sr. Manager and Head, Hospital Management Studies & Staff Training.

Mr. Sukumar Solomon, Associate General Superintendent and Head, Electrical, introduced the speaker, Mr. Stephen Victor, former secretary, Administrators Section, Christian Medical Association of India, New Delhi (2009-2014).

Mr. Victor was also the former Chief Maintenance Officer, Christian Medical College and Hospital, Ludhiana, Punjab (2000-2009), with more than 30 years of experience in a variety of fields including project management, hospital construction, renovation and facilities management. This CEE was themed 'Efficient Facilities Management for Energy Conservations in Hospitals'. The speaker stressed on the interventions to be followed for energy conservation, as energy saved is more than energy earned or produced, when one factors in the opportunity cost, depreciation and interest. On an average, 15-20% of hospital operational expense is on energy and water, and a substantial reduction in operational expenses could be effected by efficient energy conservation. He listed out - implementing renewable energy applications, adopting proven technologies during design and construction stage, and energy audits - as ways of achieving this.

He added a few tips for energy conservation - Fix water dripping from taps, Check on pump efficiency, Envelope demarcation of Air Conditioning and ensure its service regularly, Test leakage of gases, Efficient combustion of gases, Switch off equipments when not in use, Remove battery chargers when full and Use efficient lighting (LED).

The vote of thanks was delivered by Dr. Samuel N.J. David, followed by a time of queries answered by the resource person. The programme was well attended and appreciated by nearly 50 Engineering staff and students.

Campus Activities Summer Sports Coaching Camp for Staff Children A summer sports coaching camp for children of staff was conducted successfully in the month of April 2016. More than 100 children participated in Basketball, Badminton, Football and Karate at the College Campus. The valedictory function was held on May 1st, 2016, presided by Dr. Joy Sarojini Michael, Vice-Principal (PG), who distributed certificates to the participants.

Retirements Mrs. Premala Ponraj, Sel. Gr. Staff Clerk Gr.II, LCECU retired on May 7th, 2016, after 31 years of service to the institution. Her husband, Mr. Ponraj, worked in the institution as a Typist in General Pathology and Purchase Department during the period between 1980 and 1985. He then left to served the Government as a Jr. Employment Officer until his retirement. Her elder son, Mr. Alfred Jebaraj, is a Field Worker at a veterinary hospital in Vellore and her younger son, Mr. Anandaraj, is a Sr. Process Associate in Tata Consultancy Services, Chennai.

Ms. Jothy Sargunam, House Keeper Gr.I, Student Nurses Hostel, retired on May 15th, 2016, after 32 years of service to the institution.

CMC thanks them for their many years of dedicated services to the institution and wishes them a blessed retired life.
