The present Associate Director of Missions, Dr Sukria Nayak welcomed the gathering. The dedication began with a prayer by Chaplain Mani Bhushan Das followed by a Scripture reading. The Director of CMC Dr Sunil Thomas Chandy addressed the gathering and made it clear that the focus of CMC is to uplift and support the mission hospital network in every way possible. Keeping the Mission Hospitals alive is crucial and symbiotic.

Annual Rheumatology Update and Orations 2017 Department of Clinical T heImmunology and Rheumatology, CMC Vellore is one of the leading rheumatology departments of the country, which is providing excellent clinical care to patients within the country and on an international level.

The department is also involved in path-breaking research in

auto-immune diseases like Takayasu’s Arteritis, Sjogren’s syndrome, SLE, Spondyloarthritis and several others.

The department boasts of advanced diagnostic modalities in rheumatology like musculoskeletal ultrasound, extremity MRI, nail fold video capillaroscopy and advanced research lab for autoimmune diseases.

small gathering met together at the Missions Department on May 15 th 2017, to dedicate the department which was originally known as the Mission’s Office since 2007. For the last 10 years the office has shown tremendous growth in its services and at the last Council was upgraded as a department under the Directorate. This growth of the Mission’s Office to a department is significant especially considering the present scenario where CMC is focusing on reviving, rebuilding and restoring Mission hospitals.

In a nation where good health care is scarce, the Christian mission hospitals play a central role in administering the best care to the poor and marginalized.

Dr Sukria Nayak emphasized the role of the department in impacting healthcare of the country through mission hospitals. With various requests coming from mission hospitals, CMC is exploring ways of supporting and handholding them.

The first Coordinator Dr Regi Thomas reminded that the Mission’s Office was set up with a vision to develop it, into a department in ten years time.

The Council’s Advisory Committee for Mission Hospitals expressed their happiness in seeing the establishment of the Missions Department.

Dr Sam David extended his heartfelt gratitude to the various leaders who had over the years moulded the Missions Office and FOV UK for supporting the post of Mission’s Network Consultant. The department now has an active team consisting of Dr Sukria Nayak, Dr Winsley Rose (Deputy Director), Dr Tony Abraham Thomas (Coordinator), Dr Sam David (Missions Network Consultant) and Ms Bency Vinitha Chhatria (Administrative Assistant ). Special thanks to Ms Chellammal for her constant help.

The Principal Dr Anna B. Pulimood read the Franciscan benediction which has given hope in times of hopelessness.

“I wish for you discomfort at easy answers, half-truths, and superficial relationships, so that you will live deep in your heart.

May you be blessed with anger at injustice, oppression, and exploitation of people, so that you will work for justice, equity, and peace.

May God bless you with tears to shed for those who suffer, so that you will reach out your hands to comfort them and change their pain into joy.

And may you have the foolishness to think that you can make a difference in the world, so that you will do the things others tell you cannot be done...”

The dedication was concluded with prayer by the Chaplain.

Annual Rheumatology Update and Orations 2017

The department successfully organized the scientific event “ CMC Vellore Annual Rheumatology Update and Orations” on May 12th - 13th, 2017, at Wheeler Hall and CK Job Hall in the hospital premises which featured expert level talks by various eminent rheumatologists.

The highlight of this meeting was the “Annual Rheumatology Orations” which was delilvered by Prof Dr Surjit Singh (MD, DCH, FRCPCH, FRCP, FAMS), Head of the Department of Pediatric Immunology and Allergy at Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research, Chandigarh and Prof Dr Bidyut Das( MD,PhD) Head, Department of Clinical Immunology & Rheumatology from SCB Medical College,Cuttack, Orissa. This event was also enriched by the presence of Director and Principal of the institution.

An Eminent Mid-Career faculty award and Lectureship was also awarded to Dr Prasanta Pradhan ( MD, PDF in Clinical Immunology and Rheumatology), Associate Professor in Kalinga Institute of Medical Sciences of Bhuvaneshwar, Orissa who was the first fellowship trainee of Department of Clinical Immunology and Rheumatology, CMC Vellore. To generate interest of budding physicians in the field of Rheumatology, an Under graduate quiz and Postgraduate Rheumatology exam was also held along with the event.

The Community Health Department conducts summer camps for the children enrolled in the Evening study centers in Jawadhi hills every year. This activity is in collaboration with the Don Bosco Tribal Development center in Jawadhi hills.

This year the camps were from the 8th to 13th of May. There were 785 children enrolled for the camps. The camps were held in 6 different locations simultaneously.

Every day the children were engaged in a different activity by several teams of staff from CMC and from Don Bosco. The camp started at 8:30 and finished at 4 pm every day. The children were given refreshments mid-morning and at tea time in the evening, and lunch every day. The lunch and snacks were prepared on site.

This year the children learnt to make things out of discarded materials from a craft teacher from Chennai. They learnt folkarts, dancing and traditional songs, identification and uses of common forest herbs and forest conservation. They had a magic show for half a day, many of the children have never seen a magic show. All children had a medical checkup. They had a half a day workshop on life skills and coping with stress. Children who need further medical attention were referred to CMC and their treatment will be coordinated by CHAD. Some of the referrals were 7 children with valvular heart disease, 2 with osteomyelitis, 3 with seizure disorders, and 2 with suspected tuberculosis. There were also many children with refractive errors and 3 with Bitot spots.

A nutritionist spoke to the children of the importance of good nutrition, and how a good balanced meal is possible using only food produce from the hills.

This camp was possible because of enthusiastic participation from CMC and from Don Bosco. Other people involved were the forest department, a siddha doctor and his team, a magician, folk arts trainer, craft teacher and other volunteers.

The summer camps and the activities of the evening study centers are supported through donations from the FOV’s, mainly Germany, Sweden, the United States and Australia. The Community Health department thanks the FOVs and CMC for the support and prayers for this activity.

• Dr. Satya Raj, Associate Professor, Psychiatry, Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Unit has completed his Fellowship and was awarded the ‘Fellow of the Royal Australian & New Zealand College of Psychiatrists’ (FRANZCP).

• Dr. George M. Varghese, Professor, Department of Infectious Diseases was awarded Senior Fellowship (a grant amounting to 5 crore rupees) by Wellcome Trust DBT Alliance to conduct a multinational randomized controlled trial evaluating treatment for severe scrub typhus.

Retirements

Mrs. Gracy Padma, Health Centre Auxiliary Gr.I retired on 30th April 2017 after 31 years of service to the institution. She joined CMC in the Community Health and Development Department in September 1986. Her husband Mr. Anbunesan has retired from a Leprosy Project in Karigiri Hospital. They are blessed with two children Mrs. Jeniffer and Mr. Jasper.

CMC community is thankful for their years of commitment to the institution and wishes them a peaceful retirement.

Mrs. Emily Rajendran, Staff Nurse Gr.I retired from the service of the institution on the 29th of April 2017 after 19 years of service in this Institution. Having completed her Diploma in Nursing & Midwifery training in 1984 from Child Jesus Hospital, Tiruchirapalli, she joined CMC Hospital, Vellore in October 1986 and has served with sincere dedication. Her late husband, Mr. Rajendran had served as a volunteer at MHC. She has two daughters, Ms. R. Andriya and Ms. R. Blessy Alwyn .

Obituary: Mr. Paranthaman Mr. Paranthaman, Hospital Attendant Gr.II, RUHSA Department has departed to be with the Lord on 18th May, 2017. He joined CMC family on 20th October, 1998. He is survived by his wife and two children.
