Freedom - Hitherto, whitherto?

I

t was sixty nine years ago.

Someone born on 15 th of August 1947 would be in his seventieth year.

In thirty years time there will be no one living who witnessed the unfurling of the tricolour on the Indian independence day. To us born after, it is a virtual experience . To many in this generation it will be a narrative of a story getting increasingly distant.

Yet we remain the beneficiaries of the quest for freedom, paid for by our forefathers.

What does Freedom mean? To be free to do whatever we want? Or to be released from restraints on personal and collective growth? To have unfettered liberty to create, innovate and develop? It means different to different people. As an Indian, these are my thoughts: 1) Freedom is not free: It has been expensive. Thousands have given their lives to secure this. Thousands gave their blood, sweat and toil to achieve freedom. Thousands were displaced from their homes, to rebuild their lives from scratch. What was left of the

nation was tatters. Seventy years on, we are still rebuilding our nation.

The freedom continues to demand expensive inputs of time, energy, money and patriotism from us its citizens.

2) Freedom is about discovery: When we are free, it encourages us to explore and discover the expanse of life. We are free to be creative, be novel and innovative. Sky is the limit to possibilities. Nobody is there to restrain you from originality of put the pressure of limitations to prevent growth. You breathe easy and full. You fly to soar above the eagles. You discover hidden potential, talents and capabilities that remained shackled by bondage.

Its outer limits. Freedom comes packaged with tremendous responsibilities. To be accountable for the time and space we enjoy. To be using our freedom for the betterment of our neighbour. To benefit society and its people.

People of my nation. We are seventy years young. Three score and ten.

A young nation at the threshold of a breakthrough. Provided we can free our people from the chains of poverty, ill-health, casteism, prejudice, violence, racism and loneliness. he Medical Alumni Reunion was held from 11th to 13th, August 2016 with over 200 alumni in attendance. Gathered from various parts of the world in Vellore, the celebrations were particularly memorable to the batches of 1951, 1956, 1961, 1966, 1971, 1976, 1981, 1986 and 1991.

Christudoss, the alumnae then gathered and were updated on CMC’s recent developments by Director, Dr. Sunil Chandy and Principal, Dr. Alfred Daniel and Medical Superintendent, Dr. C.E. Eapen.

The Alumni Awards of Distinction were presented to Mrs. Susie Koshi and Mrs. Anna Zachariah for the year 2016.

The occasion commenced with the representatives of the special reunion batches Dr. Albert Johnson (1961), Dr. V. Srinivas (1966), Dr. Maya Subhashini (1971), Dr. Richard Jesudas (1976), Dr. Mani Rajagopalan (1981), Dr. Thomas John (1986), Dr. Sripriya Balasubramanian (1991) sharing their experiences with the medical students on 12 th August, 2016. This was followed by a CME session featuring Dr. Vaskar Saha (1976), Dr. Mahiban Thomas (1981), Dr. Shajan Peter (1986) and Dr. Vikas Khanduja (1991).

The ethos and heritage of CMC, privileges and challenges of the AHS courses were introduced to the students. They were taken through the rules and regulations of the college, safety

precautions and expectations in the hospital setting, with reinforcement on the values of honesty, integrity, team work, goal setting, time management, motivation, discipline, commitment and self image.

The students enthusiastically participated in role plays to depict the importance of these values. This session was officiated by Dr. James Relton, Retired Principal, St. John’s Vestry Anglo India Hr. Sec. School, Trichy.

In 1962, she married Dr. P. Zachariah and they moved into the Warden’s quarters in the Men’s Hostel which was to be their first home in Vellore. Their two sons, Anand and Santosh were born during this five-year stint.

Professionally, she worked with Dr. Mary Dumm of the Biochemistry Department in the early field work of CMC in rural nutrition.

She later became associated with the Rehabilitation Institute under the leadership of Dr. Mary Verghese, establishing a food service in the Institute aimed at developing a high protein diet. She supervised the New Life Centre for cured leprosy patients and continues to be a trustee of the Mary Verghese Trust for Rehabilitation.

She was the secretary of the Balavihar Committee and later member of the Vidyalayam Committee; the next step was the founding of Ida Scudder School, where she helped to start a lunch programme for less privileged pupils of the school.

Mrs. Zach is a prime example of someone who gave her time, effort and energy to the diverse aspects of institutional and community development.

The Alumni Association joins the CMC community in thanking Mrs. Susie Koshi and Mrs. Anna Zachariah, for her immense contribution to the Christian Medical College, its staff and their children and to those in need of kindness through their commitment and compassion, and is proud to honour them with the Alumni Award for the year 2016.

College Motto Award 2016: Dr. Philip Finny & Dr. Leejia Mathew The College Motto Award 2016 was presented to Drs. Philip Finny and Leejia Mathew at the Alumni Reunion.

Dr. Philip Finny joined CMC in 1990. He was among the toppers of his class, winning several academic prizes including the Jacob Memorial Award for the Best MD student.

Unashamed of the Christian faith and values, his dream was to serve in a remote area where medical facilities are rudimentary or non-existent.After completing his MBBS in 1996, Philip served for 2 years with Emmanuel Hospital Association (EHA) at Satbarwa (Jharkhand) and at Makunda (Assam). Here he gained first-hand experience of working in rural and tribal parts of North and North-East India. In 1999, he married Dr. Leejia, who shared his vision and passion for missions.

After his M.D in General Medicine at CMC, Vellore, Philip was increasingly convinced of his call to serve in North Indian Mission hospitals. With Leejia, he moved to Oddanchatram for a year to gain mission experience, where together they trained young doctors and were available to them as Christian mentors. Philip further equipped himself by undergoing higher specialty training in Endocrinology, while Leejia completed her post-graduation in Anaesthesia in CMC between 2003 and 2006.

They worked in the EHA Hospital in Makunda, Assam for a year, before moving

to the Duncan Hospital, Raxaul, where they have been based since 2008.Though a qualified endocrinologist, Philip has served mostly as a General Physic to meet the needs of people in remote parts of Assam and Bihar.

In his own words, “My greatest desire has been to nurture and mentor visiting medical students from Government medical colleges in Bihar and junior doctors in EHA who are posted at Duncan Hospital, Raxaul.

Pouring out our lives to build others professionally and spiritually has brought me immense satisfaction.” Philip also conducts clinical teaching programmes across all 20 EHA hospitals by organising CMEs. He is involved in promoting medical missionary enterprise among the Christian medical students in Bihar, Jharkhand and Nepal.

He is actively involved in clinical and epidemiological research on common medical problems in Raxaul with a view to advice Government health policy changes

and to educate general public through media. He has served as the Deputy Medical Director at Duncan Hospital for over 4 years and has worked to improve laboratory quality standards in the EHA mission hospital network. He has completed a Masters in Organisational Leadership and Management and has written 5 articles in the Voice magazine of EMFI about working in mission hospitals.

Dr. Leejia is almost always the only trained anaesthetist for the busy secondary hospital that has over 6,500 deliveries a year.

Following a PG Diploma in Palliative Medicine from Cardiff, Leejia is now establishing a Palliative Care Service in North Bihar. She trains nurse anaesthetists from EHA and other Mission Hospitals, as well as government doctors doing PG Diploma in Family Medicine Course from the Department of Distance Education, CMC. She also helps in the Medical OPD on a regular basis.

Despite constraints, they have kept their vision clear, reflecting their desire to serve the underprivileged. Philip and Leejia’s lives are an example of ‘being’ what God intended them to be in addition to ‘doing’ and upholding Aunt Ida’s vision and the College motto, “Not to be ministered unto but to minister”.

On the final day of the work camp, many students dabbled in gardening for the first time and enjoyed working alongside faculty, volunteers and gardeners. In their own words, “We learned the dignity of labour and team work; we are new comers to the CMC family – in a family we share work and today we did it.”

Continuing Medical Education in Reproductive Medicine - Infertility The Reproductive Medicine Unit organised a CME on 18th June, 2016, aimed to sensitise the gynaecologist and general practitioners in and around Vellore on initial evaluation and primary level management of an infertile couple.

Following a time of prayer led by Ms. Imtimenla Aier, Chaplain, the CME was declared open by Dr. Tony Abraham Thomas.

The initial evaluation and relevant investigation to be done in an infertile couple was elucidated by Dr. Krishna Deepti. Treatment options available for infertile patients with Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS) were surveyed

by Dr. Sumi Thomas, who foregrounded lifestyle modification and oral ovulation induction drugs as a first line option. Management of a couple with unexplained infertility and timely referral of the couple to a higher centre was explored by Dr. Mohan Kamath, following which an interactive session was facilitated by Dr. Sujata Pradhan and Dr. Anurekha J.P., who presented few day-to-day case scenarios and their management. The final session featured a talk by Dr. Sudharshini on semen sample preparation technique for Intra Uterine Insemination (IUI). The CME was then concluded after queries from the audience were responded to.

The CME received encouraging feedback from the participants, who appreciated the productive sessions.

Cardiology Treadmill Facility Dedicated The Cardiology Treadmill Facility, recently moved into a permanent establishment, where it was dedicated by R e v.

Raja, Chaplain and inaugurated by Director, Dr. Sunil Chandy on 8 th August, 2016, in the presence of Principal, Dr. Alfred Job Daniel and Nursing Superintendent, Dr. Premila Lee. The inaugural ceremony was attended by Senior Faculty and staff from the Cardiology Department and wards.

Mechanical Engineering Department installs New Equipment

The installation of additional vacuum pumps affords extension of the centralised vacuum system to OPD Block. Surgical OPD, ENT and Dental Departments are benefited by this facility.

Retirements Mrs. S. Shanthamma, Hospital Housekeeping Attendant Gr.I, Student Nurses Hostel, retired on 1st July, 2016, after having completed 33 years of service to CMC. She began her career in the institution back in 1983. She is blessed with four children: her daughters, Mrs. Mariamma and Mrs. Theresa and her son Mr. Royappan are Hospital Housekeeping Attendants in PMO (RP), A Block and College Maintenance respectively.

Mrs. K. Latha, Secretary Gr.II, Medical Oncology, joined CMC in 1987 and after 28 years of service to the institution, obtained voluntary retirement on 4th July, 2016. Her husband, Mr. Swaminathan is a teacher in a Private School and they have a daughter, Ms. S. Sreenidhi, who has completed her school education and aspires to become a physician.

The CMC community extends its thanks to them for their services rendered to the institution and wishes them a blessed retirement.

All candidates are aware of the objectives of the Christian Medical College, Vellore, which is “the establishment, maintenance and development of Christian Medical College and Hospitals in `India, where women and men shall receive an education of the highest grade in the art and science of medicine and of nursing, or in one or other of the related professions, to equip them in the spirit of Christ for service in the relief of suffering and the promotion of health”.

For the academic year 2016-17, the College, in compliance with the directions of the Hon’ble Supreme Court of India, will not be holding its own Entrance Test (Physics, Chemistry & Biology) and only candidates held to be eligible based on the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET/AIPMT) conducted by Central Board of

Secondary Education under the auspices of the Medical Council of India are eligible for selection to the MBBS course. For the Christian Medical College more than a century old, unaided, Christian minority, non-capitation fee institution, to ascertain the suitability of NEET eligible candidates for undergoing the MBBS course, assessing their general ability viz. their aptitude and analytical skills, is an extremely important facet which has helped the Institution to achieve its objectives to serve the needy even in areas where people have limited access to medical aid.

The assessment of a candidate’s general ability has been an integral part of the selection process in the Christian Medical College for more than 6 decades. The Institution wishes to make it clear that the assessment of the general ability of the candidate is not an admission test but is only to ensure that NEET qualified candidates seeking consideration for selection to Christian Medical College are suited to achieve the objectives of the Institution.

Consequently, all NEET qualified candidates will have to undergo an objective assessment of their general ability, for which purpose an online aptitude assessment will be conducted on 10.09.2016 at various Centres. Candidates will thereafter be shortlisted for special tests and interviews.
