Dr. Anna Tharyan Retires

In 2008, she moved to the Unit for Psychosocial Rehabilitation, and headed this unit from 2009 until superannuation. She was instrumental in starting psychiatry outreach services in LCECU and RUHSA. A burning passion to help and uplift the

disadvantaged with chronic mental illness in and around Vellore has motivated her to partner with local NGO's, such as Uthavum Ullangal, Missionaries of Charity and Little Hearts to provide services for those who are in need. She was presented an award by the District Disability Rehabilitation Department in 2007 and the "For the Sake of Honour" Award in 2012 by the Rotary Club of Vellore, in recognition of her service. Dr. Anna has conducted several training programmes for government doctors and lay volunteers, teaching them the basics of mental illness and its treatment.

She has also provided consultation services and in-service training for staff in charge of homes for mentally ill destitute people. She was also Head of Department of Psychiatry, CMC, from 2011-2015.

Obituary: Mr. K.L. Sebastian, father of Dr. K.S. Jacob, Professor of Psychiatry on 14 th June, 2017.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the bereaved members of the family at this time of grief and loss.

She was part of the Medical Education Cell. Her special area of interest in this domain was in communication skills. She has trained various groups in such skills, including medical students, intensive care personnel and staff. She also made teaching videos on communication and interview skills. She was a member of the institutional Women’s Grievance Redressal Committee.

r. Anna Tharyan, Professor of Psychiatry, retired on June 13th, 2017 after a lifetime of service in CMC, Vellore. She joined CMC for the MBBS course in 1974.

After internship, she worked as a medical officer in CSI Mission Hospital, Krishnapuram, Kerala, for two years. She completed the Diploma in Psychological Medicine (1983-85) and MD in Psychiatry (1988-1990) at CMC, Vellore and then joined as a faculty member. She spent three years in Oxford, UK, on study leave (1992-1995), during which she obtained the MRC Psych qualification.

Dr. Tharyan has guided and mentored postgraduate trainees in psychiatry and has been a postgraduate examiner in several universities in India. She published several articles in reputed journals, both national and international.

She is an accomplished singer. The stage in Scudder Auditorium has been witness to many of her musical performances.

Her husband, Dr. Prathap Tharyan, is Professor of Psychiatry at CMC. Their son, Rohan, is a freelance content writer in Chennai. As she moves to the next phase of her life, CMC thanks Dr. Anna Tharyan for her contributions to the institution and wishes her the very best for the future.

Talk on Drug abuse and Addiction was organised for students in CMC Dr. Venkadesh Babu, Assistant Narcotics Commissioner, Chennai gave a talk on Drug abuse and Addiction on 7th June 2017 to an audience of medical and allied health students of CMC. His talk was interesting, interactive and held the attention of the students. Information about the harmful effects of drugs was punctuated with excellent video clips and narratives of his personal experiences as an Assistant Narcotics Commissioner. He highlighted the dangers of prescription drugs that are the cause of more deaths than heroin and cocaine combined.

He informed students that, as future health care providers of the country, they should be aware that prescription drugs are being increasingly abused in India. His final word of advice was that those who stay connected to family and friends are protected from the dangers of drug abuse and addiction.

World Blood Donors Day Celebration

More than 150 voluntary blood donors donated on that day, of which two-thirds were repeat donors. A poster competition and slogan competition was initiated in local schools to increase awareness among school children and in the community. A tree planting ceremony was organized to recognize frequent repeat voluntary blood donors.

The World Blood Donor Day was observed on 14 th June 2017.

A Voluntary Blood Donation camp was conducted in cooperation with the Rotary Club of South Vellore in the Sri Venkateswara Polytechnic at Adukkambarai.

Sports News The Integrated Sports Day was conducted on 10th June 2017 at the Oval ground. The Chief Guest was Dr. Biju George, Additional Vice Principal (Research). He delivered the address and distributed the awards to the winners.

B.Sc. Students Mr. Sohalkar Gaurav M. and Ms. Amy Fiona Suresh Kumar were the runner up in the quiz contest organised during the First National CME for Medical Radiology and Imaging Technology Students held on 27th and 28th May, 2017.

Retirements Mrs. J. Queen , Staff Nurse, Gr.I, retired on the 17th of May 2017 after serving the Institution for 20 years. She interacts very well with patients and relatives and renders appropriate health teaching. She identifies deviations and reports significant events. Her husband, Mr. Amarasekar runs a business and owns a photo studio.

Mrs. Victoria Ganesh, Sr. Gr. Nursing Auxiliary retired on the 21st of May 2017 after serving the Institution for 37 years. She is known for completing work on time, her hard work and accountability in material management as well as her helping nature.

Her late husband Mr. Ganesh was pursuing a business. She has two children, elder son Mr. Vignesh Amalraj and younger son Mr.Vikram Johnson.

CMC and the Nursing Service community is thankful for their years of commitment to the institution and wishes them a peaceful retirement.

Obituary: Dr. Cyril Albert Jayachandran

Dr. Jayachandran was deputed to do M.Sc. Physics at Madras Christian College, Chennai in 1958. Later, Dr. Jayachandran took charge as Head of Physics department of CMC in January1962, to teach Physics to MBBS students in their pre-professional course. By the efforts of Dr. Morrison, Director of Radiotherapy at Hammersmith Hospital, London, Dr. Jayachandran was deputed to Hammersmith in 1966 for training in the use of isotopes and radiation physics with high energy machines on a British Council Scholarship. Professor Fowler, then head of Medical Physics at Hammersmith found that he could be of help in the radiotherapy section. He arranged for a doctoral grant for two years to carry out research at the Royal Postgraduate Medical School, London which enabled him to acquire a Ph.D from the London University, August 1968.

It was at 11 pm on 10th June 2017, Dr Cyril Albert Jayachandran, former professor of Radiation Physics, received the home call to be with The Lord. Born on 5th July 1929, he had his schooling at Trichy, and completed B.Sc. Physics at the American College, Madurai. He joined CMC, Vellore in 1951 in the Department of Radio-diagnosis.

On his return, Dr Jayachandran significantly contributed to the development of Radiation Oncology in CMC. He worked with Dr.Carl F Von Essen, a visiting Radiation Oncologist from USA. In 1978 he commissioned the Betatron with high energy electrons and 42 MeV x-rays, the first of its kind in India. In 1976, Dr.Jaychandran was made in-charge of the Dr Ida B. Scudder Isotope laboratory of Radiotherapy Department.

Dr Jayachandran was Registrar of CMC for four years from 1981. He was also a recognized Ph.D guide and examiner. Dr. Jayachandran has contributed significantly to the academic programme of the Christian Medical Association of India (CMAI). He was convener – secretary for the CMAI teaching programme for more than 20 years and was responsible in starting the Nuclear Medicine technology programme at CMC with CMAI. He was awarded with the Dr. D. W. Mategoanker National award by CMAI. He was an excellent teacher and was admired by all his students and a role model to emulate. Above all, Dr Jayachandran was a great human being, with concern for others. This is evident from the number of people he has uplifted and supported for betterment of their career.

He is survived by his wife Mrs Violet Jayachandan, daughter Dr Sujatha Thomas and son Dr Vijay Jayachandran.
