The Annual Undergraduate Research Symposium Cognitio, organised by the Students Association, was held from 14th to 16th July, 2016. It was attended by nearly 360 students from medical colleges across the country. The 3-day symposium was opened with a formal ceremony which was graced by Director, Dr. Sunil Chandy, Principal, Dr. Alfred Job Daniel, Vice Principal (UG) Dr. Solomon Sathishkumar, Vice Principal (HR) Dr. Anna Pulimood and Vice Principal (Research) Dr. Biju George.

The sessions scheduled for the first day included research-based workshops tailor-made for medical students. It included an interactive workshop on methodology and types of study designs

by Dr. Gagandeep Kang, Head, Wellcome Trust Research Laboratory and Dr. JayaPrakash Muliyil, former Professor and Head, Community Health Department. It was followed by a session on literature review by Dr. Sarah Kessler, Assoc.

Professor, Family Medicine, University of Kansas Medical Center and on ethics by Dr. Anu Rose, Associate Professor, Community Health Department. The day ended with a presentation by the BMJ team.

The second day saw keynote addresses by Padma Shri Dr. Vijay Raghavan, Secretary of the Department of Biotechnology, Bangalore and Professor Sandhya S. Visweswariah, Department of Molecular Reproduction, Development and Genetics, Indian Institute of Science. It also saw 66 research paper presentations, in the form of 16 oral presentations and 50 poster presentations.

The best few chosen by a panel of judges were awarded prizes.

The best oral presentation was from CMC, while the best poster presentation was from AIIMS, Bhopal.

The medi-quiz Epidauria was held on the final day, which drew participation from 122 teams in the junior and senior quizzes.

Congratulations: Dr. Sam Pon Raj, Sr. Registrar (2nd Year M.Ch.Vascular Surgery) won the second prize for best overall academic performance at the Mid Term Vascular Society of India Postgraduate meeting held between 1st and 2nd July 2016 at Kerala.

This was led by quiz masters Dr. Kishore Kumar Pichamuthu, Assoc. Professor, MICU and Dr. Angel Miraclin, Asst. Professor, Medicine, for the senior and junior quizzes respectively.

The Students Association – particularly the organising secretaries, Harshdeep Acharya, Anmol Jindal and Jivansha Dua - were unanimously applauded for having successfully coordinated Cognitio 2016.

Milestones: New Private Patient Facility Opened The Silver Gate (New Private Patient Facility) was dedicated on 9th July, 2016 at 7.30 am by Rev. Ananthi Arputha Mary, Head, Chaplaincy, and inaugurated by Dr. M.C. Mathews, Chairman, CMC, Vellore Association.

Director, Dr. Sunil Chandy, in an overview of the facility, mentioned that the Silver Gate was the entrance to the hospital in the 1920’s. The original Silver Gate can now be seen at the side entrance to the main block. The motif of the Silver Gate has been replicated at the entrance to the new facility in a bid to remain connected with the CMC heritage. In fact, a photograph showing the hospital founder Dr. Ida Scudder, beside ambulances parked near the Silver Gate finds place as a work of art inside the new facility.

The Chairman, Dr. M.C. Mathew in his chief guest address, retraced the history of our institution, our roots, adding that when we create a facility to welcome and be hospitable, we show patients how important they are; we make a difference to their lives in the way we reach out and care.

Dr. Sanjeeth Peter, Vice Chairman, offered felicitations, remarking that what was once the mortuary for over 4 decades is now being transformed into a receiving facility for our new patients.

This new Private Patient Facility will cater to all private patients who come to CMC without prior appointment.

Patients can now avail the pre-registration facility adjacent to the new patient facility, which houses over 5 computers. Here, the sociological data of the patient is entered online (www.cmch-vellore.edu), following which the patient may approach the Silver Gate with the confirmation number that is generated. They may then collect token numbers and proceed to be triaged. Triage staff will ensure that patients requiring urgent attention consult with clinicians at the earliest.

Following this, their payments will be transacted at the subsequent set of counters.

ACCESS (Access to corporate cashless entry and services) has also been

relocated to the old Chapel of Hope, adjacent to the new Private Patient Facility.

The inaugural ceremony was attended by several council members, faculty and staff, who appreciated the time-conserving features of this facility.

DEDU runs Training Programme for Trainers in Community Health Education The Distance Education Unit hosted a Training of Trainers in Community Health Education from June 27th to 30th, 2016. The facilitators were Mr. Ebenezer Augustine and Mr. Prabhat from Community Health Evangelism (CHE), which is a Christ-centred educational programme, practised by churches and Christian organisations globally. The objective of CHE is to equip communities to identify issues and mobilise resources to achieve positive, sustainable change. It operates on the cornerstones of Integration, Community Ownership, Multiplication, Teaching Methodology, Prevention-versus-Cure and Local Resources.

20 participants from Scudder Memorial Hospital in Ranipet, different departments of CMC like RUHSA, LCECU and Distance Education Unit and representatives from mission organisations like FMPB and Donavur Fellowship Hospital attended this workshop. The interactive training had the whole group taking part in discussions on how to address community outreach in a holistic way on a long term. Sessions included role plays and documentation in charts as tools to introduce concepts which the Distance Education Unit will be incorporating into its community-related courses like the CLHTC (Community Lay-leaders Health Training Course).

Certificates were presented to the delegates on the final day of the workshop by Dr. Sam David, Missions Office.

Retirements Mrs. Sasikala Subramaniam, Staff Nurse Gr. I CHAD, obtained Voluntary Retirement on 30th June, 2016, after 35 years of dedicated service to the institution. She completed her Auxiliary Nurse and Midwifery programme at Government Pentland Hospital, Vellore, in 1980, and worked for a year at the same hospital. She then joined CMC's Community Health Department on 16th February, 1981 as Auxiliary Nurse and Midwife. Between 1998 and 2001, she completed the General Nursing and Midwifery programme at College of Nursing, CMC and joined back at the Community Health Department.

Her husband Mr. Subramaniam, has retired as Administrative Supervisor from Tamil Nadu Electricity Board.

Their daughter, Mrs. Divitha, is a nursing alumna B.Sc. (N) 1999 and M.Sc. (N) 2009-2011) works in the Department of Emergency Services, Charlie Hospital, Perth, Western Australia and their son, Mr. Deepak, works as a Researcher in Rutgers University, New Jersey, USA. They are blessed with two grandchildren.

Mrs.Vimala Moorthy, Gr.I Nursing Auxiliary, obtained voluntary retirement on 1st July, 2016 after 27 years of service to the institution.

She joined CMC on the 24th of February, 1988, as a Nursing Auxiliary trainee. She completed her training and joined as Nursing Auxiliary on the 1st of May, 1989. She was posted in CSSD, where she was known for her able technical skills, and spent her entire service of 27 years there.

Her husband, Mr. Moorthy, works as an AC supervisor in the Electricity Board of Vellore. They are blessed with two sons. Their elder son, Mr.Vignesh, is currently pursuing his M.E. (EEE) at Thanthai Periyar Government Polytechnic,Vellore. Their younger son, Mr.Gowtham, has completed his B.E. (EC) and now works at WIPRO, Bangalore.

CMC thanks them for their years of service rendered to the institution and wishes God’s blessings on their retired lives.
