And when the disciples were at shore, steeped in hopelessness and turning back to their former fishing days, Jesus revealed Himself to them and restored their faith manyfold. It is this reality that we celebrate at Easter, re-experiencing its power in our lives.

Easter brings Restoration: As the two disciples journeyed towards Emmaus, the despondency is almost palpable in Cleopas’ words: “…We had hoped that he was the one who was going to redeem Israel. And what is more, it is the third day since all this took place…” (Luke 24: 21).

And yet, hope returned anew as Jesus joined them. The intensity of this faith is what comes through in their remarks: “Were not our hearts burning within us while He talked with us on the road and opened the Scriptures to us?” (Luke 24: 32).

Easter is filled with the message of restoration – restoration of life, restoration of relationships, restoration of hope, peace, and commitment. Let us then celebrate this season as the restoration of the lost.

Reworking of the Resurrected Lord

In support of Autism Awareness The inauguration of World Autism Awareness Month was celebrated on 1st April, 2017, by the Developmental Paediatrics Unit, Child and Adolescent Psychiatry (CAP) Unit and Paediatric Nursing Services.

Autism is a neurodevelopmental condition which affects communication and socialisation; has restrictive, repetitive movements, interests or behaviours.

However, due to lack of awareness, it remains an undiagnosed condition in early childhood leading to loss of precious time for intervention. The theme for Autism Awareness 2017 is Autonomy and Self-determination, towards helping children with autism become independent. Competitions were conducted for staff, students, and children in the wards, on autism awareness.

Many people were dressed in shades of blue, the colour of autism. Dr. Beena Koshy welcomed the gathering and asserted that awareness of autism was a step towards removing its stigma. Felicitations were given by Dr. Dolly Daniel, Associate Director; Dr. Ebor Jacob, Deputy Medical Superintendent; Dr. Judy Ann John, Vice Principal, and many others.

Dr. Ebor explained the plans of the Indian Academy of Paediatrics to promote awareness and training to paediatricians to facilitate early detection of autism. Dr. Sherab, CAP Unit, pointed out that living with autism needs courage and that it is not a disability by itself, but made out to be so by the social response to it.

A ceremony to honour the prize winners of the various competitions was conducted, as was a puppet show by staff of the Hall of Residence to emphasise signs and symptoms of autism. CAP put up a stall displaying a tactile blanket among other sensory tools to help children with autism. Pamphlets were also distributed to families visiting the Hospital, which described the signs of autism and government schemes available to these children.

World Diabetes Day events draw to a close The department of Endocrinology, Diabetes & Metabolism conducted a series of events to commemorate World Diabetes Day in schools and colleges around Vellore from September 2016 until April 2017.

A valedictory function was organised by the department to felicitate the winners of the events.

The chief guest, Prof. T. Jacob John, Consultant Virologist, former Head of Virology department, advised children on the importance of physical exercise and a healthy diet.

A dance competition on the idea ‘Electronic Gadgets can cause Obesity’ drew participation from 160 students in 8 schools and 15 colleges. Among the schools, the 1st prize was bagged by Krishnasamy School (NKV), followed by Vani Vidhyalayam School (2nd), and Spark Matriculation School in 3rd place; consolation prize was awarded to Williams School.

Among colleges, Narayani College of Nursing won 1st prize, followed by Kingston Engineering College, Katpadi, and College of Nursing, CMC Vellore in 2nd and rd 3 places respectively. Consolation prize was awarded to St Johns School of Nursing.

Lyrics of the favourite hymn How Great Thou Art rang loud from the Friendship Chapel on 7th April, 2017, as faculty and students of College of Nursing (CON) gathered along with administrators, teachers, friends and well-wishers in a spirit of thanksgiving for the new and aesthetic furnishing of the chapel at Kagithapattarai.

The service began with prayer by Rev. Dr. D. Arul Dhas. The Dean, CON, Dr. Selva Titus Chacko and her team recognised the grace of God and extended their thanks to the many national and international contributors who financially supported the additional facilities.

Dr. Margaret Kamalini Kumar (alumnus of Batch of 1963, B.Sc. Nursing) was instrumental in raising funds for the furniture, in memory of her late husband, Dr. Surendra Kumar (MBBS Batch of 1960). Dr. Margaret graced the programme with her presence and spoke of how many people from various walks of life had contributed in small and big ways to this endeavour.

Others who contributed to the development of this facility were also appreciated including Ms. Kate Guenther, President Vellore CMC Foundation USA, Dr. Anil Kuruvilla, Associate Director, Mr. Ebenezer Sunderraj, General Superintendent and the Engineering departments.

The prayer of dedication was offered by Rev. Rainard Pearson, and felicitations given by the Director, Dr. Sunil Chandy. The service closed with prayerful benediction by Rev. Ananthi A. Mary, Head, Chaplaincy Department.

• Dr. Anika Amritanand, Associate Surgeon, Department of Ophthalmology, won the Best Paper Award in the Non-communicable Diseases section for the presentation titled Incorporating Primary Eye Care into Primary Health Care: Modelling a Synergistic Partnership at the 61st Annual Conference of the Indian Public Health Association, held in February 2017 in Jodhpur.

• Dr. Rini Mary Thomas, 2nd year Postgraduate in Medicine, claimed the first prize at the SRMC MEDICLINICS 2017 conference held at Sri Ramachandra University, Chennai for her presentation titled Unusual presentation of Systemic Sarcoidosis – A case report.

• Dr. Joyson Soundrarajan, Senior Librarian, Head of Library Services was awarded the S J Kulkarni Award 2016 by the Medical Library Association of India, in recognition of his outstanding contributions at the National Convention of MLAI, held at Gaya, Bihar, from 19th to 21st March, 2017.

• Dr. Vrisha Madhuri and team from CMC and Dr. Dinish NS and Team from IISc, Bangalore have been awarded the NRDC (National Research Development Corporation) Meritorious Invention Award of the Year 2015 for Padma Pada – A Compliance Monitoring Club Foot Brace. The award ceremony will take place on 24th and 25th March, 2017, at the Indian National Science Academy, New Delhi.

• Dr. Sanjeev Kumar Pandey, Final Year Postgraduate Resident in Neurosurgery, won the Best Poster Award for his presentation titled Surgical Implications of Migrating Choroid Plexus papilloma, at the 28th Annual Meeting of Indian Society for Paediatric Neurosurgery and 2nd Annual Conference of Asian Australian Society for Paediatric Neurosurgery, held from 24th to 26th March, 2017 in Mumbai.

Retirements

Mrs. G. Shantha, Hospital Attendant Gr. III, Neuro Ward, who became a part of the institution on 18th November, 1997, completed her 19-years’ journey here, on 1st April, 2017. She has three daughters, of whom her eldest, Mrs. Uma Devi, is a Hospital Attendant in the ‘H’ Ward.

The CMC Community gratefully acknowledges their commitment to the institution through the years, and prays they find God’s favour and blessing in their retirement.

Mrs. Rajeswari Rao, Multipurpose Health Worker Gr. I, retired on 1st April, 2017, after 34 years of service to the institution. She joined the institution in 1983, through the Domiciliary Midwifery Programme of Community Health Nursing department. She worked in the CONCH programme for three years, then later resumed her stint at CHAD Hospital until retirement.

She has a daughter, Mrs. Anu Bharathy, Tutor, College of Nursing, and a son, Mr. Rabindranath, Administrative Officer Gr.I., QMC. Mrs. Rao is also blessed with two grandchildren.

Department of Clinical Microbiology invites Applications to the In-Service CME Programme in Diagnostic Microbiology The Department of Clinical Microbiology at the Christian Medical College, Vellore runs an In Service CME on Diagnostic Microbiology each year.

The aim of the course is to provide ongoing training for staff from diagnostic facilities in smaller hospitals. This is a refresher course suitable for technicians, technologists and microbiologist who already have a basic knowledge of diagnostic microbiology. It is NOT suitable for those with no current knowledge of the subject.

The course is taught throughout in English.

Training in the following areas will be provided: • methods of media preparation • cleaning and sterilisation procedures • bacteriological techniques • serology including HIV and HBsAg screening • mycology • surveillance of hospital acquired infections.

The course fee is Rs 2,500/- per candidate sponsored by institutions belonging to missions which support CMC, and Rs 7,500/- for all others.

Accommodation is NOT provided. TA and DA will be borne by the trainee only. A maximum of 6 candidates will be selected each year.
