Midwives' Day Celebrated in CMC May 5th is remembered internationally as Midwives’ Day, and in its commemoration, the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecological (OG) Nursing put together a meaningful celebration. The theme designated by the International Confederation of Midwives for 2017 was Midwives, Mothers and Families – Partners for Life. The programme opened with a word of welcome to the midwives in attendance, by Mrs. Ebenezer Ellen Benjamin, Professor and Head of OG Nursing. She then briefed the gathering on the theme, which was presented by Mrs. Anu Jacob, II Year M. Sc. Nursing student. A prayer of dedication was said by Rev. Deborah, Chaplain, on behalf of the midwives. Following this, all the midwives took an oath emphasising their commitment to their profession. A cake specially designed around the theme of the day was cut by the senior midwives, after which Mrs. Florence Segaran, Deputy Nursing Superintendent, offered her felicitations. Subsequently, a debate was conducted among I Year M. Sc. Nursing students, on the statement that midwife-led care signifies more partnership than obstetrician led care, which seeks more leadership. The debate concluded on a point of agreement that leadership and partnership are the two wings of the OG Department. PPBSC II Year students role-played a day in the life of a midwife, drawing a close to the worthwhile programme.
