The Office of the Nursing Superintendent, in collaboration with the Hospital Infection Control Committee, successfully conducted their third 1-week Short Course for Nurses of Mission and private hospitals from 1st to 6th August, 2016. The Course was designed as an update on knowledge and skills pertaining to Hospital Infection Control, through lectures by Medical and Nursing faculty, practical sessions, field visits, Microbiology laboratory visits, skill stations and group discussions. The Tamil Nadu Nurses and Midwives Council, Chennai, sanctioned 30 credit hours to the participants. A total of 40 delegates were registered, representing 19 hospitals from across India.

The inaugural ceremony was led in devotion by Rev. Rajdeep Samal, Chaplain and attended by Nursing Superintendent, Dr. Premila Lee, Addl. Deputy Nursing Superintendent, Mrs. Regina Xavier, Vice Principal (PG) and HICC Secretary, Dr. Joy Sarojini Michael and HIC Officer, Dr. Hema Paul.

Aims and objectives of the course were defined at the outset, with a pretest for participants. Sessions on variegated aspects of Infection Control – Antibiotic Stewardship, Accreditation and Quality – were organised and participants were encouraged to develop Infection Control Committees in their own facilities. Chaplaincy Department coordinates Retreats for Staf f The All-Staff Retreat (English) organised by Chaplaincy Department took place on 10th July, 2016 at the New Examination Hall, Bagayam, where around 180 staff from different departments of CMC attended. The theme 'Growing Together in Christ' based on Ephesians 4:15, was delivered in two sessions by Dr. David Koilpillai, Professor, IIT, Chennai, and was followed by a time of group discussions.

The same theme marked the All-Staff Retreat (Tamil), which was held on 17th July, 2016 at MBKG Pannai, Kasam and attended by 450 members of staff. Led by Mr. Kingsley Arunodhayakumar, Founder of Serve India Mission, Chennai, the purpose of the retreat was to reflect on serving in the Spirit of Christ.

These retreats served as an opportunity for all participants to re-dedicate themselves to the healing ministry and to also see their role in the growth of the CMC community.

CEU hosts 3-Minute Thesis Competition The Clinical Epidemiology Unit (CEU) conducted its third 3-Minute Thesis Competition, in collaboration with the University of Queensland, Australia on 9th July, 2016. This is a competition open to those who have completed a Postgraduate course and are employed at CMC. Participants have 3 minutes and one slide, within which to present their work before an audience of staff and students.

This year’s competition saw 10 participants ranging from Basic Sciences, Bio-engineering, Nursing and Clinical Sciences. The judges, Drs. J.P. Muliyil, Vikram Matthews and Satish Kumar evaluated the presentations based on content and communication. The results showed Dr. Riddhi Dasgupta in the first place, Dr. Saibal Das in the second and Mr. Naveen G. in the third place.

ORS Week Observed The Departments of Paediatrics and Paediatric Nursing, along with the Indian Academy of Paediatrics (IAP), North Arcot Chapter celebrated ORS Week from 25th to 31st July, 2016. ‘ORS - The only right solution for diarrhoea’ was its central message. Diarrhoea continues to be the second leading cause of death among children under the age of 5, claiming 1 in 9 child deaths worldwide.

The week’s proceedings were set in motion following an inaugural programme on 25th July, in the presence of Dr. Indira Agarwal, Professor and Head, Paediatrics, Dr. Therani Rajan, Professor and Head of Peadiatrics, Govt. Vellore Medical College, Dr. Anil Kuruvilla, Associate Director, Dr. Ebor Jacob, Deputy Medical Superintendent and Mrs. Mary Anbarasi, Professor, Paediatric Nursing.

Outreach programmes were held in Thorapadi High School, Thottapalayam Girls High School and Don Bosco Higher Secondary School by doctors and nursing staff, where health education was imparted on preparations of ORS and other foods that can be administered to those suffering from diarrhoea. Several competitions were organised for nursing staff, students, postgraduate registrars and also for children admitted to wards.

A valedictory function held on 31st July, marked the close of ORS Week, during which a talk on ‘Celiac disease’ was delivered by Dr. Sudipta Dhar Chowdhary, Associate Professor, Gastroenterology. The valediction was presided over by Dr. Ravichandran, Secretary, Indian Academy of Paediatrics, North Arcot Chapter, who awarded the winners of the various competitions. The programme was concluded with a few words of felicitation by Dr. Prabhakar Moses, former Professor and Head, Department of Paediatrics and Consultant, Wellcome Research Unit.

A t ribute to World Head and Neck Cancer Day Since 2014, 27th July has been observed as World Head and Neck Cancer Day by several cancer organisations, including International Union against Cancer (UICC). Together, the Head and Neck group of CMC (Surgery 1, Radiation Therapy, ENT and Dental) and Psychiatry Unit 2 organised visits on 27th and 28th July to local educational institutions (VIT University and Shrishti School) to interact with students. Awareness was raised on habits causing Head and Neck Cancer and students were educated on its early detection. They were also briefed on counselling towards cessation of tobaco and alcohol consumption.

Head and Neck Cancer Survivors Meet On 30th July, the Head and Neck group organised a Cancer Survivors Meet, based on the concept ‘I Can We Can’, for survivors of cancer. The meeting was organised to identify unmet needs of patients and to provide a forum for patients with various ancillary support group members (Allied Health professionals, Oncology and Surgical nurses, Medical physicists and RT technologists).

The meet welcomed a registration of 54 patients with their family members and was declared open by Dr. Rajesh Isiah in the presence of Dr. Subhashini John, Dr. John C. Muthusami, Dr. Rajiv Michael and Dr. Rabin Chacko. An array of support clinics (oral care, balanced diet, speech & swallowing, neck & shoulder physiotherapy, general counselling, tobacco & alcohol cessation) was arranged and after initial triage with QOL questionnaire, patients were referred to appropriate clinics. Later, they were engaged in group discussions led by Rev. Paul Ravikumar and his team.

Following talks on complete oral care by Dr. Rabin Chacko and tobacco & alcohol cessation by Dr. Shyam Sundar, Mrs. Annie Jacob reinforced the ‘I can, We can’ concept. An interactive session ensued between patients and the support groups, in a panel discussion moderated by Mrs. Roselin, with panelists Ms. Mahendri, Dr. Rabin Chacko, Dr. Swapna Sebastian, Mr. Lenny Vasanthan and Dr. Shyam Sundar.

A few patients shared their battles with cancer. One of the survivors, Rev. Sajan Mathew, composed a song that lyrically conveyed his journey through cancer treatment, which was played at the meeting. Dr. J. Rajinikanth then formally drew the meet to a close.

Neonatology & OG Nursing honour World Breastfeeding Week World Breastfeeding Week was celebrated by the departments of Neonatology and Obstetrics & Gynecology Nursing between 1st and 7th August, 2016. Rev. Saramma Kuruvilla prayerfully inaugurated the programme on 3rd August, presided over by Mrs. Alice Augustine, Former Nursing Superintendent and Head, OG Nursing and attended by Mrs. Ebenezer Ellen Benjamin, Head, OG Nursing, Dr. S. Sridhar, Head, Neonatology Unit and Dr. Premila Lee, Nursing Superintendent.

Around 100 mothers with their family members actively participated in the programme. Mothers admitted to all Obstetrics wards were educated towards a deeper understanding of breastfeeding. Diverse modes of demonstration were used to convey the importance of breastfeeding and competitions were held for nursing staff of OG department apropos of the week’s theme.

Breastfeeding counselling to women, who attended Obstetrics & Gynecology OPD everyday between 1st and 7th August, 2016, was facilitated by Mrs. Leena Durai, Charge Nurse, Neonatology Unit.

Retirements Mr. Kantharaj K., Hospital Attendant, Gr. I., Nuclear Medicine, retired on 1st July, 2016 after 34 years of service to the institution. He joined the Personnel Department in 1982 and was promoted to join the Nuclear Medicine Department as confirmed staff in 1983. He is the recipient of the Best Attendant Award (2011).

Kantharaj and his wife, Mrs. Devika K. are blessed with three children: Mr. Vinoth Kumar is a Radiographer, whose wife Sindhu is a Staff Nurse in the Emergency Department; their daughter, Ms. Deepa K. and their younger son, Mr. Naveen Kumar are both Technicians in the Department of Anaesthesia.

Mrs. D. Sulochana, Hospital Attendant Gr.I, Student Nurses Hostel, joined CMC in 1982 and completed 34 years of service to the institution as on 1st July, 2016, when she retired. She has a daughter and her son, Mr. Edward Lawrence is a Hospital Attendant in KN Ward.

The CMC community extends its thanks to them for their services rendered to the institution and wishes them well as they enter a blessed retirement.

MCTT – Best Employee Recognition Instituted To motivate and encourage MCTTs (Multifunctional Computer Terminal Technicians), who are the face of CMC, a Best Employee recognition has been instituted. Based on a set of specific criteria, three-monthly evaluations are done to choose the employee of the month with the best attitude (positive in dealing with patients).
