Dr. Prathap Tharyan Retires

Cochrane Network and also played a central role in creating the Clinical Trials Registry in India. He was the Program Director and member of several HIV/AIDS related projects which were conducted by agencies like NACO, Ford Foundation and USAID. He headed the Professor B.V. Moses Centre for Advanced Research and Training in Evidence Informed Health Care and Health Policy. His academic excellence and knowledge has been of great assistance in conducting training workshops on developing protocols, completing and updating systematic reviews completion and teaching of research methods and research ethics. He was a member of many government and scientific advisory boards and was on the editorial board of several publications. Dr.Tharyan has been the recipient of several awards and orations including the Kenneth Warren Prize awarded by the Cochrane Collaboration for the best Cochrane Systematic Review.

Dr. Tharyan, apart from his academic and administrational excellence is also exceptional in his stage skills. He has kept the stage alive with his singing, music, oration and theatre performances. Dr. Anna Tharyan, his wife recently retired from the Department of Psychiatry at CMC. Their son, Rohan, is a freelance content writer based at Chennai. As he moves to the next phase of his life, CMC thanks Dr. Tharyan for a lifetime of dedicated service and the immense contributions he has made to his department and institution and wishes him 1 the very best for the future.

r. Prathap Tharyan, professor of psychiatry, retired on 1stAugust, 2017 after dedicating more than thirty years of service to the institution. He entered the portals of CMC in the year 1974 as a medical student. After internship, he completed his sponsorship obligation in the Church of South India Mission Hospital, Krishnapuram, Kerala and the SLR&TC, Karigiri. Dr. Tharyan pursued his MD in Psychiatry in 1984 in CMC and proceeded to join the department of psychiatry as a faculty in 1988. He spent three years in Oxfordshire, UK, on study leave during which he obtained the MRCPsych qualification. He headed Unit 2 of the department of psychiatry between 1997 and 2007 and was also the head of the department of psychiatry from 2003-2007.
