The Chaplain Mr. Rajdeep Samal began the programme with a word of prayer, following which Mr. Andrew Babu, Head of the Physiotherapy Unit welcomed the gathering.

The pathology and rehabilitation aspects of three of the main disease processes seen in the elderly were addressed. The concept of the ‘Frailty Syndrome’ was clearly described by Dr. Prasad Mathews.

Mr. Samuel Vinod (PT), Ms. Mary Kavi (OT), and Dr. Naveen from PMR covered the rehabilitation aspects of the frail elderly patient. The problem of COPD and CCF was elaborated by Dr. K.G. Gopinath, Mr. Lenny Vasanthan (PT), Mrs. Priyadarshini (OT) and Dr. Prashanth Chalageri from PMR. Under the Neurological disorders, the pathology of Stroke and Parkinson’s was highlighted by Dr. Surekha V., followed by the important aspects of the rehabilitation process. These were explained in

he Departments of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation and Geriatrics organized a CME on Saturday, 1 st of July 2017 themed “Rehabilitation Potential in the Elderly”. The CME was attended by sixty Physiotherapy and Occupational Therapy staff and students from various colleges and hospitals in and around Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka.

In a poster competition which was held as part of the CME, Ms. Kanagadevi won the first prize for poster competition titled “Overcoming challenges in the rehabilitation of the elderly”.

The CME was well appreciated by all participants and faculty.

The Departments look forward to conduct more CMEs to train the therapists in the management of elderly, in order to “add life to years”.

The NABH assessment for Nursing Excellence certification The NABH assessment for Nursing Excellence certification was initiated by the Office of the Nursing Superintendent from the 24 th to the 26th of June 2017.

A rigorous and thorough examination followed by an analysis of Nursing Services was conducted by Mrs. Abanti Gopan, Mrs. Antonia Punitha and Mrs. Beenamma Kurian, who are the primary assessors of NABH .The meeting began on 23rd of June 2017 at 9 am where the Director, Dr. Sunil Chandy introduced the Institution to the assessors. Dr. Premila Lee, the Nursing Superintendent, spoke about the various mechanisms employed within the nursing services which provide assurance of quality. She also enlightened the group on the improvements and upgrades within the services. The entire assessment process, focused on the nursing care, quality, infection control and human resource management including visits to few of the clinical and peripheral areas; Institutional processes involving nurses or having Nursing implications were also scrutinized.

The knowledge, skill, confidence and assertiveness of the nurses at CMC were duly recognized and mentioned by the primary assessor Dr. Abanti. She was also impressed by the excellent work of the Specialist Nurses. The whole exercise was a fruitful endeavor and will bring another accolade to the Institution after the closure of few non-conformances. CMC, Vellore will then have the largest nursing department in the country with nursing excellence certification.

Workshop on ‘Stoma Care Nursing’

The Departments of Continuing Nursing Education and Research and Surgical Nursing of College of Nursing organized a workshop on ‘Stoma Care Nursing’ on June 19 to 25, 2017. The workshop was sponsored by the Government of India in collaboration with the Tamil Nadu Nurses and Midwives Council (TNNMC), Chennai. Dr. John C. Muthusami, Professor and Head of the General Surgery Division was the chief guest for the inauguration. There were a total of thirty participants; seven from CMC and the rest from Government hospitals, Primary Health Centers, Private hospitals and Nursing schools in Vellore. The workshop included lectures, discussions, group activities, role plays, skill stations, and observational visits to stoma clinic and patient care units.

The resource faculty was a team of Enterostomal therapists, Stoma Nurses, Surgeons, Chaplain, Counsellor, and Nursing Faculty. Participants gained comprehensive knowledge and specialized skills in providing care to patients with stoma. Forty credit hours were awarded by the TNNMC. The feedback from the participants revealed that the course was very informative and useful.

ASHA Alumni Association launched its New Chapter ASHA (Association of students in health & Allied Science) crossed yet another milestone on 17th June 2017, as they began their Alumni Association with the Investiture of the first term of office bearers on the same day. The Association expressed their gratitude to the Principal Dr. Anna B. Pulimood, Vice-Principal (AHS) Dr. Judy Ann John, the Chaplian Rev. Paul Ravikumar and mentors Dr. Alfred Job Daniel , Ms. Jennifer Nancy for gracing the occasion.

Congratulations to Master Ishaan Abraham Pichamuthu and his proud parents Ishaan the nine-year-old science enthusiast discovered a new species of freshwater jellyfish thriving in the depths of Kodaikanal lake, during their family trip. He has always been fascinated by marine creatures and curious about insects, fish and other such creatures. Ishaan is a class IV student of Ida Scudder School in Vellore. Ishaan and his parents Dr. Kishore Pichamuthu, Department of Critical Care and Dr. Anjana Bennett, Department of Distance Education, Christian Medical College, Vellore collected some of the 1cm wide creatures and brought them back to Vellore. A specimen was taken to the National Centre for Sustainable Coastal Management at Anna University in Chennai and the Christian Medical College, Vellore where it was under observation and research for more than six months. Former director of the Zoological Survey of India (ZSI) K. Venkataraman confirmed that the jellyfish Ishaan discovered was the first of its kind discovered in India since Freshwater jellyfish are extremely rare.

Subsequently, the species was registered with the regional ZSI office in Chennai on 22 nd February.

His finding will be included in the Animal Discoveries records brought out by the Zoological Survey of India.

Dr. F.S. Geethanjali, Professor and Head, Clinical Biochemistry attended the South Zone ACBI Conference, at Believers Church Medical College, Kerala and was awarded "Dr. Vijayakumar Memorial Eminent Scientist Award" by the Council for Clinical and Diagnostics Professionals (CCDP).

Memoranda  Dr. Regi Thomas, Professor of ENT and Acting Head of ENT Unit-I is appointed as Council Secretary, CMC Vellore Association and Council with effect from 1st October 2017 for a three-year term.  Dr. C.E. Eapen, the current Medical Superintendent's appointment is extended till the new Medical Superintendent is made effective.  Dr. Suja Kurian, Professor of Psychiatry is appointed as Head of Psychiatry Unit-III with effect from 7th July 2017 for a four-year term.

 Dr. Padma Paul, Surgeon / Associate Professor of Ophthalmology is appinted as Acting Head of Ophthalmology Unit-III with effect from 4th July 2017 till further notice.  Dr. Debasis Das Adhikari, Physician, will be In-charge of CMC Emergency Response Team (CERT), Safety Cell with effect from 2nd May 2017 during the period when Mr. T.S. Ravikumar, CERT, Co-ordinator is on Sabbatical leave.  Mr. Ebhinezar Sundarraj's term as Acting General Superintendent is extended till 31st October 2017 and he is appointed as General Superintendent from 1st November 2017 to complete his term at the close of 16th July 2019.  Mr. Ebinezar Sundarraj, Senior Systems Manager and Acting General Superintendent will continue as Head of the Department of Computerized Hospital Information Processing System (CHIPS).  Mr. Sukumar Solomon's term as Associate General Superintendent is extended for a period of one year from 1st July 2017.

Obituary Mrs. Elizabeth George, mother of Mrs. Sopna Joshua, Counselor, Medical Superintendent Office and mother-in-law of Rev. Giftus Joshua, Sr.Chaplain, Chaplaincy on 5th July, 2017 at Kalloor, Ernakulam.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the bereaved members of the family at this time of grief and loss.

Retirements Mr. M. Michael, Sr. Selection Gr.I Pharmacist, Department of Pharmacy Services, retired on 31st May, 2017 after 36 years of dedicated service to the institution.

His wife, Mrs. Kiruba Michael, is a Charge Nurse working in Main OR. He has a son, Mr. Leo Kingsley working as an X-ray technician in CMC. Mr. S. Swamidass, Sr. Hospital Attendant, C.R.S., retired on 1st June, 2017 after 34 years of dedicated service to the institution. He has three sons; his second son, Mr. S. Samson is a Radiographer in the Department of Radiology.

CMC is thankful for their years of commitment to the institution and wishes them a peaceful retirement.
