2022 Annual Report
VELLORE CHRISTIAN MEDICAL COLLEGE FOUNDATION

Vellore Christian Medical College Foundation’s mission is to support the Christian Medical College and Hospital (CMCH) of Vellore, India, in her drive for excellence in healthcare, education, and research. It is also to ensure the lasting legacy of CMC’s founder, Dr. Ida Sophia Scudder.
The Foundation’s strategic vision is to continuously expand its US development activities to ensure CMCH’s longevity and continuous impact. Throughout 2022, the Foundation focused its energies on cultivating relationships with the US faith-based community, CMCH’s US alumni community, members of the Scudder family, and individuals and institutions acquainted with CMCH through their relationship with the Vellore CMC Foundation.
In this year’s report, you will become familiar with the tangible and wide-reaching outcomes that your gifts made possible. You will also learn more about the life-transforming impact of CMCH’s various programs and services. As a preview, we will share with you our plans for the celebration of the Foundation’s 75th year anniversary in 2023.
The year 2022 was a banner year both for the Foundation and CMCH. While this report will showcase all of our achievements in 2022 and our upcoming 75th Anniversary, I wanted to make sure to highlight the value of each and every one that made all this happen.
To our individual and organizational donors and partners, you have been the backbone of the Foundation. Your gifts have far exceeded our expectations and allowed us to accomplish what you see in this report. We do not have enough words to tell you how much that means to both the Foundation and CMCH.
To our accomplished, brilliant, hard-working, and diligent alumni (medical, nursing, and allied health), we are so very proud of your accomplishments and contributions to healthcare—here in the US, in India, and globally. No matter what your experiences, your love and loyalty to CMCH is so apparent in your connections with each other and your generous contributions to benefit CMCH.
To our wonderful, diverse, and committed Board members, you have given of your time, talents, and tithes, not to mention your expertise, experience, and education to push this Foundation to accomplish some of the greatest achievements in its history. We owe you so much. May your connections to CMCH last a lifetime.
And finally, to our small but mighty Foundation staff, you produced such high-quality work and assured the smooth running of the organization in spite of the many challenges you have had to face. We could never have achieved what we have these past few years without you. May God continue to bless and use you.
To all the faithful donors, alumni, Board members, and staff who have supported the Foundation and its mission: You are loved. Thank you.

Dear Partners, Donors, and Friends of the Vellore CMC Foundation, Together in 2022, we accomplished what had never been done before—over the course of the year, the Foundation successfully transferred over $4.2 million to the Christian Medical College & Hospital (CMCH) of Vellore, India. It was the greatest distribution of charitable funds to CMCH in a single year since its inception in 1948. Your generosity funded a dedicated eye surgery theater at the Chittoor Hospital campus, six medical and 20 nursing scholarships, an expansion of the Jawadhi Hills Model Village Program, a state-of-the-art simulation training lab, and a new construction project that will result in the opening of a children’s specialty care hospital.
2022 also marked the opening of CMC’s Level One Trauma Center and 1,500-bed specialty care teaching hospital in Ranipet. Road traffic accidents (RTAs) have been a major cause of death and disability in India— particularly in Tamil Nadu—with 150,000 deaths annually, mostly among persons ages 15–24. For this reason, CMC’s new Level One Trauma Center (the first of its kind in South India) is of such paramount importance. The Foundation led several fundraising campaigns over the past ten years to support this work, resulting in significant contributions to the completion of the Urology, Radiology, Cardiology, Emergency Medicine, Pediatric Neurosurgery, and Trauma Departments.
In April 2022, we hosted our first in-person event since the pandemic. Held in New York, our gala was highlighted by the presence of Lesley Stahl, of CBS’ 60 Minutes fame, who served as our emcee extraordinaire, and NPR legal affairs correspondent, Nina Totenberg. They brought to light the significant accomplishments of CMCH and the Foundation and shared remarkable stories about their rises to prominence.
As we near our 75th anniversary in 2023, the Foundation is honored to uphold our role as protector and executor of your generous charitable contributions. We look forward to celebrating our collaborative successes with you at one of our anniversary events.
I hope you find the subsequent pages informative, relevant, and inspiring. We remain forever grateful for all that you do to help us achieve our goals and stay true to our mission.
John A. Riehl President & CEO“To our wonderful, diverse, and committed Board members, you have given [so much] to push this Foundation to accomplish some of the greatest achievements in its history.”
—Margaret Kumar, PhD, Chair, CMC Foundation Board
We are proud to share that we raised and transferred a total of $4.2 million to CMCH in 2022. This could not have been achieved without all of you—our friends and donors—who never failed to act with love and push the boundaries of generous compassion for those most in need.
Your gifts supported CMCH’s impactful projects— from its medical and nursing scholarships to its life-transforming medical services, subsidies, and socio-economic community programs.
CMC’s Ranipet Campus officially opened in June 2022 to serve the medical and public health needs of the region. This sprawling multi-specialty facility and teaching campus features South India’s first Level One Trauma Center. It is only the third trauma center of its kind in the country, with the other two facilities located in the north.
This groundbreaking medical center is a continuation of CMCH’s mission to provide excellent and compassionate care to all. Thank you for making this possible.
With support from the Foundation, CMCH formally entered into a historic partnership with Canada-based entrepreneur and philanthropist Mr. Prem Watsa, whose companies, Fairfax Financial Holdings and Quess Corp Limited, have pledged to invest a total of $38 million toward the building of a pediatric specialty care hospital at the Ranipet Campus.
We are excited to embark on this new partnership to transform children’s medicine in India, particularly for those most vulnerable and in need.
“The CMC Vellore Ranipet Campus is now a fully functional and vibrant hospital serving the people of our country. It is no small feat that this massive multidepartment transition took place in such a seamless manner. Guided by our common goal ‘not to be served but to serve,’ our main strength is people-human resources across various grades of staffing. The whole process was miraculous and God’s hand is at work at every aspect of this new beginning.”
—Dr. Dheepak Selvaraj, Associate Director Ranipet Campus
Trauma is now the leading cause of death and disability in India, with CMCH’s state of Tamil Nadu having the highest number of road traffic accidents in the country. In conjunction with increasing numbers of patients at CMC’s main campus, and no space to expand, CMCH embarked on its most ambitious project yet—constructing India’s most technologically advanced multi-specialty hospital and Level One Trauma Care facility—the biggest expansion in its history.
The Ranipet Campus officially launched in 2022 after it was briefly converted into a COVID relief center during the worst waves of the pandemic. Today, CMC’s newest campus serves nearly 60,000 patients every month. It is staffed 24/7 by a team of trauma specialists and specialty surgeons within all disciplines of medicine and equipped with the latest in trauma management medical technology, a Cardiac Care Unit, and over 30 operating theaters. It has India’s largest bone marrow transplant unit and 10 pathology labs that serve CMCH patients and community members throughout South India.
Exemplifying excellence in care, the CMC Ranipet Campus not only provides state-ofthe-art health services in its facility, but also implements locally relevant and comprehensive healthcare solutions for victims of accidents and marginalized communities. It also serves as a leading teaching facility for India’s next generation of medical professionals.
167,000+ patients have been served at CMC’s Ranipet Campus since its 2022 launch.
In September 2022, Vikram Mathews, MBBS, MD, DM, FASc, a world-renowned hematologist with over 250 research papers credited to his name, succeeded Dr. John Victor “JV” Peter as the Director of CMCH. Dr. Mathews is an alum of CMCH in both the MBBS and MD programs, and was CMCH associate director before stepping into this role.
As you stepped into your role as Director, CMCH inaugurated a 1,500-bed multi-specialty teaching hospital—one of its biggest undertakings. How does this new campus advance CMCH’s mission?
The expansion to Ranipet was necessary so CMCH could respond to increasing demands and to serve more people. We could no longer expand the main campus and needed to move many sub-specialties to a bigger space where they could really thrive.
The Ranipet Campus has been a major challenge, but with God’s help, we have successfully completed the transition. Today, it doesn’t feel like a new hospital anymore—it’s a well-oiled machine—thanks to the work of many people.
Concurrently, there’s a lot of work and planning going on to improve all the resources and facilities on the main campus, which will always be the mother campus.
The new campus was a tremendous financial investment for CMCH. How do you balance the pressures for financial results with the need to address public health issues?
We put in a lot of effort as a team to make our campuses warm, welcoming, and patient-focused. Our recently launched “Patients First” campaign reminds us daily of what we are working towards and why we exist.
In view of this, although fees and tariffs typically increase between 4–5% every year, we made a conscious effort this year to only increase these for certain services and to keep increases very low at 1%–2% on average.
To meet our financial responsibilities, we are scaling up and optimizing the utilization of all available outpatient and inpatient services. Through this concerted effort, we are confident we will achieve this goal.
What’s your vision for CMCH and what do you hope to inspire through your leadership?
CMCH has a well-established track record of being the best medical training institution in the country. One of my most important tasks is to maintain that standing and to continue being one of India’s top medical colleges and hospitals.
In addition to that, my vision is to strengthen CMCH’s Missions network, which is made up of 168 hospitals that serve India’s rural areas, using modern technology and networking, alongside integration with CMCH’s system to improve their administrative and operational structures. This is important to stay true to our primary objective to take care of those most in need.
In terms of what I hope to inspire as a leader, it’s directly working with the people we serve to understand how we can better address their needs. I often find that the health care delivery team who are on the ground and on the frontlines in patient care have a very good understanding of the problems and the potential solutions that can correct them. It is important to listen and be in touch with them.
How has Dr. Ida S. Scudder’s legacy impacted your views on medicine and service?
Dr. Ida S. Scudder’s legacy is in every aspect of what we do. She was a classic example of never staying in a comfort zone—going out of the way to reach out to people in the margins. That’s something that we will continue to do through our Missions network and other programs at CMCH.
The CMC Ranipet Campus would not have been possible without the generous contributions of our donor community in the US who not only contributed funding support but also inspiration, philanthropy, and legacy in service of our mission.
The expansive space of the Ranipet Campus has enabled CMCH to provide more dignified, stateof-the-art, and multi-specialty care to thousands in South India. The majority of patients have benefited from Foundation donors’ contributions to CMCH’s hospital free scheme, medical care subsidies, and other community programs for those most in need.
We are deeply grateful to the 96 donors who believed in and contributed to CMCH’s ambitious goal to address South India’s most pressing healthcare needs. In these pages, we are highlighting some of our most instrumental supporters whose involvement brought the completion of the Ranipet Campus to fruition.
“The inspiration and motivation Dr. Ida Scudder ignited in me have been constant companions throughout my professional career.”
In 2018, Dr. Jitendra Sisodia pledged $40,000 towards the Foundation’s first-ever matching gift campaign. Dedicated to his late children, Sanjeev and Aroti, Dr. Sisodia’s gift inspired many more, with the campaign raising $78,000 in total to help CMCH build South India’s most advanced trauma center!
“Grateful to our Alma Mater for guiding us along Life’s way.”
The support from Drs. Thomas for interventional radiology enables the department to provide both elective and emergency needs. This includes CT and US-guided procedures, angiograms, management of internal bleeding, and revascularisations.
“Thank you to all my family and friends who supported the campaign to raise funds for the Radiology Department of CMCH’s first Trauma Center. I am grateful that I could honor the 10-year death anniversary of my husband in such a meaningful way. I hope that this Trauma Center, with the ambulance outreach, is able to save many lives on our roads.”
“Vernon was a firm believer in charity and helping people.” –Peter Netto, brother of Dr. Vernon Netto
Dr. I.C. Vernon Netto, post-graduate alum, left a generous bequest to the Vellore CMC Foundation in support of CMC. To honor his memory, CMC designated his gift to the advancement of medicine and surgery in the area of urology. His legacy gift will have a lasting impact on the department of urology at CMCH.
“I am trauma surgeon and when I go to India, I am always concerned that there is so much trauma and no really wellplanned trauma system. When CMCH asked me 6 years ago to help with the planning of the center and recruiting new surgeons, I felt it was an important project to work on. Returning to Ranipet this year, seeing the trauma center and spending time with the trauma surgeons and nurses was an incredible heartwarming experience.”
“Our children, Sanaya and Akaash Wadhwa, embody all the dreams and achievements of the generations that came before them. By naming the Pediatric Neurosurgery Department in the Ranipet Campus after them, we hope it will help instill in our children a strong sense of agency, philanthropy, ability to effect real change in people’s lives, and bring a sense of connection to their motherland.”
We are excited to share that CMCH’s partnership with entrepreneur and philanthropist Prem Watsa— through his Toronto-based company, Fairfax Financial Holdings, and its subsidiary, Quess Corp Limited—officially began in 2022. Facilitated by the Foundation, this historic investment of $38 million will be used for the construction of a new 350-bed pediatric specialty care hospital, further expanding CMCH’s impact and mission to provide compassionate care to all in need.
Approximately 80% of these funds will flow through the Foundation between the years of 2022 and 2026. In 2022, we received $2 million—the largest gift in the Foundation’s 74-year history. We are proud to be a part of this impactful initiative to serve children in Vellore and beyond.
The center will also focus on education, training, research, and the development of programs, services, and resources that are scalable and transferable for potential expansion to future sites across the country.
"We believe this initiative will enable CMCH to lead the way in transforming pediatric care in India."
—Mr. Prem Watsa
The Foundation launched its Jawadhi Hills Model Villages Program Campaign in January 2022 to help fund the growth of CMCH’s community health programs for the indigenous population of the Jawadhi Hills. Thanks to your generosity, the campaign successfully raised $200,000 to help improve the public health condition of this area while also creating a pathway for communities to secure economic independence and security.
Your donations to this campaign will allow CMCH to expand its economic and healthcare improvement programs in three villages and will support replicating these programs in a fourth community. Doing so will allow each village to obtain access to early infectious disease prevention, clean water, hygiene/ sanitation, education, and social programs to improve the overall health and socioeconomic outcomes of the community.
The Jawadhi Hills program continues to push the boundaries of healthcare, going beyond providing medical services to address social conditions that determine a person’s health and wellbeing.
The Foundation and CMCH continue to partner with USAID through its American Schools and Hospitals Abroad (ASHA) program. Since 1982, USAID has provided over $13 million to fund improvements in CMCH’s infrastructure and medical equipment. We are grateful for this productive partnership that is helping CMCH achieve its mission of excellence in research, education, and compassionate patient care.
In 2022, we wrapped up an ASHA grant that funded equipment enhancements for CMC’s neonatal and obstetrics departments, including the NICU and labor room. Through these upgrades, CMCH can now provide more dignified care, better monitoring, and more targeted medical treatments to over 10,000 babies and mothers in labor every year, improving their long-term health outcomes.
In the same year, another ASHA grant funded new stateof-the-art modifications and equipment for four simulation training labs at CMCH. The Nursing Foundations Lab, Advanced Skill Lab, Maternity Nursing Lab, and Pediatric Nursing Lab (all located on the College of Nursing campus) will be used to train CMCH doctors, nurses, and emergency teams on the latest technologies to respond to emergencies, basic and advanced nursing procedures, and CPR. The goal of this highly advanced teaching facility is to improve maternal and neonatal care and reduce maternal, newborn, and child mortality and morbidity.
Thanks to continued support from ASHA, CMCH is on track to launch a new physical rehabilitation center and toxicology lab in 2023, which will further expand CMCH’s capacity to provide extraordinary care to persons and communities most in need.
“With this catalytic grant, USAID aims to accelerate reductions in maternal, newborn, and child mortality and morbidity by increasing the commitment and capacity of locally led institutions and providers to offer high-quality, integrated healthcare in the state of Tamil Nadu.”
$13M in grants since 1982

The CMC Chittoor Campus, located in southern Andhra Pradesh, has been offering in-hospital and community outreach medical programs to the region since 2011. Most recently, its challenge was to expand its surgical capabilities to include a dedicated eye surgery operating theater.
Through the generosity of two Foundation donors, Drs. Mangala and Venki Venkatesh and Dr. Robert Fish, this dream became a reality. At its completion, the Chittoor campus now includes five state-of-the-art operation theatres, as well as a high-quality diagnostic laboratory that can support the analysis of clinical pathology, biochemistry, microbiology, and virology.
Through the generous contributions of United Women in Faith, the US College of Nursing (CON) alumni community, and other friends, the Foundation surpassed its goal of raising $50,000. With these funds, the Foundation is sponsoring twenty (20) full CON scholarships beginning in the 2022-2023 academic year.
Since 2019, the Foundation has awarded three- and fouryear scholarships to a total of 77 deserving students. Each one of the young women selected by the College of Nursing is focused and academically driven. These scholarships—made possible by dedicated members of our donor community—will make a long-lasting difference in the lives of these students.
Since 2010, CMCH has run the India Vaccinology Course (INDVAC), its internationally recognized course that specializes in educating trained health professionals in this field with a focus on applying this expertise in lowand middle-income countries that are often overlooked.
Funded by a Gates Foundation grant, CMC’s INDVAC has trained 293 medical and scientific professionals. The majority of participants have been from India, including the critical states of Bihar, Jharkhand, Orissa, and Madhya Pradesh, where the immunization coverage is low. Other participants have been from Nepal, Bangladesh, Indonesia, Tanzania, Australia, the UK, Norway, and South Africa. In 2023, INDVAC will be held in person from September 18-27.
The Low-Cost Effective Care Unit (LCECU) began in 1982 to provide public health and medical assistance to those living in the urban slums of Vellore. Through your generous contributions, the Foundation is able to support LCECU’s mission year after year. LCECU provides subsidies to patients so they can obtain testing, treatment, or medications and receive post-treatment medical and socioeconomic support.
Through your support, LCECU helped 28 patients in 2022, which included three children and 13 women. Most had life-threatening conditions, which required intensive care admission, emergency surgery, and/or a cardiac intervention procedure.
One such patient was five-year-old Raghavan, who had to stay in the pediatric ICU for 45 days due to severe second-degree burns covering 55% of his body. This sadly led to a bacterial infection and septic shock. While Raghavan’s recovery was amazing, he required further surgery for his post-burn contractures. LCECU, through the patient support fund, covered most of Raghavan’s treatment, ensuring that his family did not fall into further debt from medical costs.
Today, Raghavan is doing well and has rejoined school. His family supported him throughout his ordeal. Raghavan’s family and the LCECU team are deeply grateful to those Vellore CMC Foundation donors whose donations have given Raghavan a bright future ahead.
In 2022, Foundation donors supported 62 patients at CMCH Vellore. These patients, from economically disadvantaged backgrounds, received Person-to-Person Fund subsidies that allowed them to receive specialized treatment, ranging from obstetrics and gynecology, gastroenterology, hepatology, cardiology, neurology, eye/ nose/throat (ENT), orthopedics, and general medicine.
During the past year, the Emergency Fund supported 109 patients, 22 of whom were children under 18. Emergency Fund recipients desperately needed but could not afford urgent, life-saving medical treatment. The Emergency Fund grants up to $1,300 to patients to help cover the costs of their trauma care, cancer treatment, and other costly items, lessening the financial burden on the patient and their families.
Many of the patients supported by the emergency fund could not have afforded the care they needed. For example, young Anu could not move her left arm and needed surgery to improve her mobility. Despite her parents’ best efforts to finance the procedure, they still needed $720 to obtain the treatment. The emergency fund covered this amount and Anu now has full mobility, improving her quality of life for the years ahead.
Your generous support at our 2022 Gala made it the most successful fundraiser in the Foundation’s history. We are deeply touched by your amazing support that has positioned CMCH to do even more good in 2023—the year of our 75th anniversary. This momentous night was made special by our donors, gala emcee, honorees, and guests. We knew something special was going to happen when CBS 60 Minutes host, Lesley Stahl, and NPR's award-winning legal affairs correspondent, Nina Totenberg, graced the stage together and candidly shared their experiences as the first women pioneers in a historically male-dominated field.
We were honored to have the US’ first-ever Ambassador-at-Large for Global Women’s Issues, Melanne Verveer, as our 2022 Dr. Ida Scudder Women’s Empowerment Awardee in recognition of her tireless efforts to address the dire human rights situation in Afghanistan and countless women's empowerment issues.
The Foundation also recognized CMCH Director, Dr. John Victor Peter, with our first ever "Healthcare Leadership Award" for his exemplary commitment and embodiment of compassionate, Christ-centered, holistic, cost-effective, and high-quality medical care that defines and makes CMCH so special.
CMCH’s dedication to excellence, compassionate care, and innovative were on display throughout the night. As Lesley Stahl said, “CMCH stands alone as a beacon of light in India and as the standard-bearer for the entire global healthcare community.” You made all of this possible—thank you!
President and CEO, John Riehl welcomes America’s most honored and experienced broadcast journalist, Lesley Stahl, as the 2022 Gala emcee.
Our Gala theme this year was “Uplifting Humanity.” We were honored to have our donors, honorees, emcee, and CMCH community during this special fundraiser, which was our most successful yet.
The Foundation’s Board Members came together this year to draw upon each member’s expertise and insights on how to maximize the Board’s contributions toward helping CMCH affect positive change in student education, scientific research, and compassionate patient care.
The Foundation’s annual board meeting was held on April 29th in NYC. The board welcomed one returning and three new members, and also elected a new set of officers. We are extremely grateful for the board’s leadership and generosity in sharing their talents to CMCH, and look forward to celebrating a landmark year with them!
The Foundation and CMCH were delighted to honor Drs. Abhay and Rani Bang for their commitment and pioneering leadership in communitybased healthcare and, in particular, their medical research. Their work has revolutionized interventions on infant mortality and neonatal care in underresourced communities, as well as influenced national and international public health policies.
The Foundation’s 2022 Virtual Lecture Series (VLS) program featured The Right Reverend Malayil (Saju) Muthalaly, Bishop of Loughborough, the youngest bishop to ever be ordained in the Church of England. Bishop Saju presented a thoughtprovoking and inspiring lecture entitled “Bewilderment and Hope: Stories of Healing and Beauty in Brokenness,” which highlighted the fundamental truth that God is love and spoke about God’s restoration and new life through brokenness.
Bishop Saju noted in his lecture that “There is nobody we will come across who is outside the bounds of the creativity, the love, and the embrace of God.”
Bishop Saju has an intimate acquaintance with CMCH and Dr. Paul Brand. The bishop grew up at the Leprosy Mission Hospital in Bengaluru, India where his mother served as a nurse. As a young adult, Saju was deeply influenced by his mother’s faith and calling to serve the ostracized community of lepers in India.
This virtual event brought together clergy and other thought leaders from our broad network of US faith-based organizations to discuss “balancing local and global mission priorities.” The main takeaway was that all mission work belongs primarily to God, and exists to ensure that God’s love, healing, and compassion is shared with all.
The Foundation continued its popular virtual lecture series for the CMCH global community. This year, Bishop Saju, a young bishop of the Church of England and admirer of CMCH, presented a lecture on the grace of God’s love and finding healing in brokenness.
We organized and hosted a global virtual event to introduce the new members of the CMCH Administration team, which included Dr. Vikram Mathews, CMCH’s new Director; Dr. Solomon Sathishkumar, the new Principal; and Dr. Mark Ranjan Jesudason, the new Associate Director of Administration.
For the fourth consecutive year, our most loyal and dedicated donors came together virtually to celebrate their shared admiration for CMCH. In the spirit of the Thanksgiving holiday, Dr. Vikram Mathews expressed his gratitude for the bountiful generosity of our US donor community.
Our second virtual Christmas event was attended by members of the Foundation’s faithbased community and board of directors. It was a special gathering filled with scripture, prayers, and some of our favorite traditional Christmas carols to celebrate God’s love for humanity through the birth of Jesus Christ.
“[No one] is outside the bounds of the creativity, the love, and the embrace of God.”
—Bishop Saju Muthalaly
Dr. Ida Sophia Scudder was a trailblazer throughout her life—pushing countless barriers that paved the way for Indian women and impoverished communities to attain progress, education, and care.
Ida grew up during a time when certain people were dying because of restrictive norms that excluded them from receiving care. Ida knew that she needed to train women to help women. She began with formal nurse training in 1909, then the Licensed Medical Practitioner (LMP) course when she founded the Missionary Medical School for Women in 1918. Fourteen of Dr. Ida’s cohort of trainees topped their examinations in 1919.
In 1942, the LMP was upgraded to the full MBBS degree course. Soon, the nursing school became the first College of Nursing in India in 1946. Starting in 1947, men were admitted to the MBBS course.
Above all, Dr. Ida always strove for excellence, compassion, and service. She built one of Asia’s largest medical centers and held ‘roadside clinics’ in far-flung areas throughout her life. She also comforted patients and mentored countless medical professionals.
Aunt Ida—as she was fondly called—died at age 89 in May 1960, leaving a legacy that continues to inspire, empower, and transform millions of lives.
“Being determined we will succeed, there must be no faltering… Let us go forward shoulder to shoulder determined to win–and we will win. Hear His voice saying, ‘Only be Thou strong and very courageous.’”
—Dr. Ida S. Scudder, 1937
The Foundation welcomes 2023 with great enthusiasm as we celebrate the 75 th anniversary of our founding. Having concluded our best fundraising year yet, we are excited to share this important milestone with our community—all of you who have journeyed and supported CMCH’s growth and continued impact.
Throughout the year, we will host several opportunities to pay tribute to our donors, our partners, CMCH and its leadership team, and (of course) Dr. Ida Scudder, the founder of both CMCH and the Vellore CMC Foundation.
• 10 Virtual Lecture Series. The first will be with Dr. Gagandeep Kang—CMC’s most notably acclaimed medical scientist in recent history—on “How CMCH’s Research is Impacting India’s Health and Well-Being.”
• 4 cultivation events in Washington DC, Boston, New York City, and Atlanta to celebrate with friends and donors in these cities.
• Our inaugural Excellence In Service, Research, and Education (EISRE) Awards will be held in June. Awards will be given to two members of the North American CMCH alumni community whose career pursuits have embodied excellence.
• Our first 5K Fun Run/Walkathon, scheduled to take place in Edison, New Jersey, on Saturday, July 22.
• The 12th Annual Scudder Humanitarian Oration will be held on August 10, 2023. CMCH and the Foundation will honor Dr. George Cheriyan, Director/CEO of the American Mission Hospital (AHS) of Bahrain, for his exemplary work and embodiment of Dr. Ida Scudder’s dedication and compassion for humanity.
• Our 75th Anniversary Gala is being planned for early November in New York City.
We hope you can join us as we celebrate 75 years of impact in research that’s shaping the future of medicine; education that prepares India’s next generation of healthcare professionals to tackle the country’s toughest health challenges; and compassionate care that provides physical and spiritual healing for those most in need.
