REPORT 2024-2025
The Phil Smith Center for Free Enterprise supports our Florida Atlantic faculty who teach and conduct research across multiple areas of business that all touch on the principles of free enterprise. The Phil Smith Center at Florida Atlantic is an important part of Phil’s legacy, and I am honored to support it.
Several years ago, the Harry T. Mangurian Foundation generously stepped forward and added substantial annual gifts that build upon and support the work of the Phil Smith Center. These gifts have allowed us to expand and further promote Phil’s legacy to College of Business students and members of the South Florida community.
In recent decades, there has been increased advocacy by many for greater government control and planning of the American economy, and even outright socialism. Too many students – too many people – find such arguments appealing. At the Phil Smith Center, we push back on this narrative, by educating our students on the negative effects of socialism and highlighting the principles and actual results of our American system of free enterprise.
Phil Smith’s generosity has built an academic foundation that supports economic freedom, entrepreneurship, and economic opportunity, creating a lasting impact by supporting our faculty members who teach our students and conduct research. In the College of Business at Florida Atlantic, Phil’s alma mater, we now have a thriving academic center that builds upon the principles underlying his success as a businessman and community leader. This report outlines the recent teaching, research, and community engagement activities of our faculty affiliates.
Over the last year, the Phil Smith Center has experienced tremendous growth in all of our facets of outreach. Guest speakers include former Governor of Iowa and Ambassador to China, Terry Branstad, and distinguished economist Dr. Art Laffer. The center has also welcomed three new professors and three new fellows; together they have taught many hundreds of students and published impactful research, helping Florida Atlantic reach Carnegie R1 research status.
On behalf of the faculty and students at Florida Atlantic, I wish to express my thanks to Mrs. Susan Smith, MikeDayhoff, and all of Phil Smith’s family and friends, particularly Steve Mehallis and the Mangurian Foundation. We look forward to continuing our activities in support of free enterprise education for many years to come!
Best wishes and Go Owls!
Daniel M. Gropper, Ph.D.
Dean, Florida Atlantic College of Business
Phil Smith was a great example of a hard-working Florida Atlantic student who understood and appreciated the opportunities in our American free enterprise economic system. Phil ultimately achieved his dreams of owning his own automotive dealerships while becoming a leader in business and our South Florida community. As President of Florida Atlantic University and a strong advocate for the free enterprise system, I am deeply proud that we honor his legacy through the Phil Smith Center for Free Enterprise. We are also proud to have his name on the building - Phil Smith Hall - where our students are educated and inspired to achieve their own dreams . ”””
~ President Adam Hasner
My principal objective as Director of the Phil Smith Center is to ensure that we are bolstering the columns of our collective purpose. Each year, I aim to engage in principled risk-taking and create value through mutually beneficial exchange. Whether through our guest speaker series or student engagement activities, it is my goal to expand our footprint in each unique capacity that the Phil Smith Center exists.
I am proud that we have more than doubled the number of speakers we have welcomed on campus during the past academic year. We have welcomed three new professors and three new fellows whose research contributes to public knowledge of the benefits of free market enterprise. In addition, the Phil Smith Center now houses two student reading groups and facilitates student excursions to free market conferences and student led colloquiums that center around free enterprise. The Phil Smith Center has also become a proud partner with the Austrian Economics Center, an international organization that hosts speaker events on college campuses worldwide to advance and preserve knowledge of the free market. It is an honor to be trusted with the advancement of Phil’s legacy through the Phil Smith Center. It is a profound privilege that I do not take lightly. I would like to thank Mrs. Susan Smith and the Smith family for affording these opportunities to students and community members alike. The Center will only continue to grow from here!
Phil’s story demonstrates the possibilities open to anyone in a free-enterprise system to be entrepreneurial, work hard and pursue their dreams.
The Phil Smith Center for Free Enterprise is named in recognition of Florida Atlantic College of Business graduate, Phil Smith.
Phil Smith, a native of South Florida and leading Broward County businessman, entrepreneur and philanthropist took risks in business and invested in people. He was a great believer in our American free enterprise system. His story demonstrates the possibilities open to anyone in a free enterprise system to be entrepreneurial, work hard and pursue their dreams.
Smith graduated in 1969 from Florida Atlantic’s College of Business. He was president and CEO of Phil Smith Management, Inc., operating 11 automobile dealership locations representing 25 franchises in Florida and North Carolina. For more than 30 years, Smith built his organization from the ground up earning the trust of his customers, his employees—everyone he dealt with.
He was a leader in our South Florida community, involved with local hospitals, Universities, sports, and youth groups.
The Phil Smith Center for Free Enterprise supports the vision and strategic plan of the College of Business to advance thought leadership in business and provides research and educational programs for faculty members and students. The Center also supports distinguished visiting faculty along with a lecture series focused on the principles of free enterprise and how those principles affect growth, prosperity, and opportunity.
A $5 million gift from Phil and Susan Smith was used to establish The Phil Smith Center for Free Enterprise at the College of Business, which named its main tower Phil Smith Hall.

PHIL SMITH FELLOWS
Florida Atlantic Business faculty are respected resources and provide expert insights to help business communities, consumers and policy makers make better informed economic decisions. Our faculty experts engage with local, regional and national audiences. Below are some of the highlights.
During the fall and spring semesters, College of Business students had an extra-curricular opportunity to learn about free market economic principles, one of the pillars of the Phil Smith Center for Free Enterprise.
The Phil Smith Center expanded its student outreach with two student reading groups lead by new Phil Smith Fellow Dr. Bryan Cutsinger and Center Director Andrew Garrison. Each group met once a week during the Fall and Spring semesters. Each semester ushered in a new book to keep intellectual curiosity sharp and to shed light on different benefits that an uninhibited, free market provides. Books discussed include Free to Choose by Milton and Rose Friedman, The Armchair Economist by Steven Lansburg, and Basic Economics by Thomas Sowell. These works were carefully selected to ensure that students were exposed to the free-market principles that Phil Smith subscribed to while also challenging them to apply these concepts to all aspects of everyday life.
“The Economics Reading Group showed me how economic theory shows up in everyday life. Discussing real examples - like ticket scalping and market pricing - helped me think critically, share my ideas confidently and engage in open discussions with other students.”
~Priscilla Malekan, student
Discussions were engaging and lively, with many students from diverse backgrounds sharing their point of view while deepening their understanding of the free market.
If ever students did not see eye-to-eye with the authors’ takes on economic issues, they were free to voice their opinions. One of the best aspects of the book club is that full agreement is not required to participate. Conversations based on these ideas were encouraged and were frequent. The Phil Smith Center offered a $150 scholarship to qualifying participants who actively contributed to group discussions. Both reading groups are expected to continue during the next academic year with brand new books and a new class of young, freemarket-minded entrepreneurs.
“Being part of the Economics Reading Group deepened my understanding of realworld economic applications, enhanced my analytical thinking, and allowed me to connect with peers who share a similar curiosity.”
~Owen Williams, student
It is a sincere hope that our students emerege not as passive participants in modern discourse, but as thought leaders beyond the walls of the College of Business.
“CAPITAF” takes place yearly at Milton and Rose Friedman’s former home in West Fairlee, Vermont. Students had the opportunity to engage in intellectual discussions centered around Milton Friedman’s most celebrated works such as Free to Choose and Capitalism and Freedom. The best part? All discussions took place in Milton Friedman’s living room where he wrote the very works of discussion! The Phil Smith Center plans to return to CAPITAF in May 2025.
Phil Smith Owl’s flew to Vermont in May 2024 to attend “CAPITAF” student colloquium.
Florida Atlantic business students attended the Road to Freedom conference in Santa Barbara, California exploring economic policy, entrepreneurship and President Reagan’s Ranch, connecting economic theories with real-world insights.

HAVE CONSEQUENCES”
Florida Atlantic University’s College of Business welcomed distinguished economist and Presidential Medal of Freedom Award winner Dr. Arthur Laffer to campus. Dr. Laffer spoke to a class of 250 economics students about tax rates, tax revenues, and what to expect from the newest administration, and he gave a lunch talk open to members of the local community. March 26th 2025 - Jimmy Song
“UNDERSTANDING MONEY”
The Phil Smith Center partnered with the Young America’s Foundation (YAF) to host Bitcoin developer Jimmy Song. Students and community members alike learned about the unique characteristics of cryptocurrencies, specifically Bitcoin. Jimmy Song linked Bitcoin to the need for “sound money” that has largely gone unfulfilled over the past few years. He highlighted alternatives to the dollar that may become more attractive when the government runs an unstable monetary regime to service its own exploding debt financing needs.
April 15th, 2025 -
Barbara
“THE PRETENSE OF KNOWLEDGE”
The Hayek Institute brought its “Free Market Roadshow” to Florida for the first time on April 15, 2025. Florida Atlantic Unversity served as the first pilot event for the organization in the state. Economists Barbara Kolm and Richard Rahn spoke to the South Florida community and upperclass college of business students about the dangers of socialism and the importance of highlighting free markets.
Barbara served in Austria’s lower house of parliament as an elected member of the Austrian National Council. She is also currently the Director of the Austrian Economics Center, whose goal is to promote a free, responsible, and prosperous society by enhancing public understanding of key economic issues.
Richard Rahn served as the Vice President and Chief Economist at the U.S. Chamber of Commerce during the Reagan administration . He currently serves as Chairman of the Institute for Global Economic Growth. Together, Kolm and Rahn answered questions from the audience ranging from how to foster economic growth to the unique challenges facing free markets in today’s geopolitical climate.
Economist Dan Mitchell spoke to a Principles of Macroeconomics course regarding the dangers of misguided tax policy. Mitchell shed light specifically on how taxes may have the best of intentions but lead to the worst of consequences. Dan Mitchell is the president of the Center for Freedom and Prosperity, an organizational dedicated to promoting international tax competition and financial privacy.
April 16th, 2025-Jorge Jraissati
“THE PROBLEM WITH DEBANKING”
Visiting Fellow Jorge Jraissati rounded out our 2024-2025 Guest Speaker Series with an engaging lecture on his recent research focused on “debanking.” A new phenomena, debanking is the practice by which a financial institution closes, restricts, or denies access to banking services for certain customers without publicly disclosed reasons. Originally a major issue in Europe, the practice has become a modern phenomena in many economies, including the United States. Jorge alerted students to the precedent that this could set if financial intermediaries are encouraged or allowed to exclude citizens financially on the basis of political reasons.

His work on education, inequality, and race has been widely cited in media outlets and Congressional testimony.
Professor Fryer was awarded a MacArthur “Genius” Fellowship and the John Bates Clark Medal -- given by the American Economic Association to the most outstanding American Economist under age 40. Among many other honors, he is a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and a recipient of the Calvó-Armengol Prize and the Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers. Dr. Fryer has an ongoing project with the Free to Choose Network, and appears frequently in the Wall Street Journal.
