AYURVEDA Ayurveda is the ancient Indian science teaching us how to live a long and healthy life. “Ayur” stands for life, and “veda” means wisdom. YE R BA MA T E Yerba mate is the national drink of many South American nations. It is most common in Uruguay, Paraguay, Brazil, Arjentina, Bolivia and Chile. Its varieties differ mainly on the basis of how pure the Yerba is from stems and dust. In the Veda House we serve Brazilian Yerba, which is very pure and strong. Yerba Mate is made of the dried leaves of the Ilex Praguensis plant, which cointains lots of caffeine and other stimulants. It is therefore a quite stimulating and energizing drink. The caffeine is so binded by tannins, that the energizing effect is both very long-lasting and enhancing not only the mind, but also the physical strength and endurance of the body. Yet caffeine is not the only source of energy. Mate contains a plethora of essential microelements such as: 24 vitamins and minerals, 15 amino-acids and 11 polyphenols (anti-oxidants). It regulates the blood sugar levels, aids digestion, eases nerve tension and allergic symptoms and increases overall immunity. The Yerba Mate drink may be prepared with cold or warm water (not more than 75°C). The infusion times are short - 1-2 minutes. Traditionally the mate is steeped in a gourd, which is filled 1/3 with the dry herb, then the special metal straw is carefully inserted (no stirring!). The water is poured carefully so that it may flow by the stem of the straw and wet the mate from the bottom up. A lot of special meaning goes into the preparation and drinking of the Yerba. It is believed to connect those drinking it to the Spirit above and Mother Earth below, as well create permanent bonds of friendship when shared in a circle with other people.
