Working Safely Is The First Step Toward A Long & Rewarding Career At the Vecellio companies, our most important job is keeping our employees and work sites safe. As in many other industries, construction, mining and energy operations require a “safety first” attitude. For us to be successful, we must all do our part to work safely. It is vital that you understand your job and know what any potential dangers are. Know and always obey the company’s safety policies. Put safety first — and if you have any doubts about an action or procedure, consult with your supervisor to clear up any questions. Remember, working safely is the first step toward a long and rewarding career!

College Students Granted $100,000 In Aid Through 2013 Vecellio Family Foundation Scholarships Since 1973, the Foundation has provided more than $2.8 million to help further the educations of 333 students, independently chosen from among applicants at selected West Virginia high schools and programs, and from among eligible employee dependents.

I

f furthering the college educations of future business and community leaders is a good investment, the Vecellio Family Foundation has built up a vast portfolio over the years. Celebrating its 40th year of philanthropy, the Foundation helped finance the educations of 10 new college students in 2013, including two from within the Vecellio Group’s family of employees. Each is receiving $2,500 per year for four years in care of the chosen college/university, totaling $100,000 in aid. To date, $2.8 million has been provided to further the educations of 333 students. Founded in 1973 by Vecellio family members, the non-profit Foundation each year assists eight high school students at selected West Virginia high schools and programs, and up to three eligible dependents of Vecellio Group employees. Recipients are chosen by an independent review board (not by VFF or the Vecellio Group) based on SAT/ACT scores, school transcripts and other factors.

Employee Dependent Scholarship Program

Pete Culicerto

Mary Vogel

The Vecellio Family Foundation, at its discretion, awards two or three scholarships each year to dependents of employees of Vecellio Group, Inc., and its subsidiaries and divisions. To be eligible, a student must be a graduating senior and be a dependent child (natural or adopted) of a Vecellio Group employee (any company or division) who has at least one year of continuous active employment before January 1st of the student’s graduation year (scholarship year). NOTE: A fully independent scholarship review and selection committee awards the employee dependent scholarships, choosing from among all eligible applicants. No one from the Vecellio Family Foundation, the Vecellio Group or any of its subsidiaries is involved in the decision.

Employee Dependent Scholarship applications are available to all eligible employees of all Vecellio companies. Contact your local Human Resources department for an application; it must be completed and turned in by March 1, 2014.

For Vecellio companies in Florida, dependents may also be eligible to apply for a scholarship from the Florida Transportation Builders Association. For an application and deadline information, see www.FTBA.com or call (850) 942-1404.

Employee Dependent Scholarships

Two employee dependents scholarships were granted in 2013 in memory of Leo A. Vecellio, Sr., Vecellio & Grogan’s late cofounder. Michael “Pete” Culicerto, son of Michelle Wikel of Vecellio & Grogan, is attending Marshall University. Mary Vogel, daughter of Rich Vogel of Vecenergy, is attending University of Florida.

Selected WV Scholarships

Eight additional scholarships were awarded through the Foundation’s West Virginia programs, established to give back to the communities where V&G got its start. Joshua Buckland, representing Shady Spring High School, was selected to re10

ceive a Leo A. Vecellio, Sr., Memorial Scholarship. He is attending West Virginia University. Liberty High School graduate Kaitlyn Cantley also received a scholarship in memory of Leo A. Vecellio, Sr. Kaitlyn is attending West Virginia University. Three students from Woodrow Wilson High School received scholarships in memory of Leo Vecellio, Sr., Rick Vecellio (late brother of Leo Vecellio, Jr.), and Al Janutolo (former long-time V&G employee). Ian Barley is studying at West Virginia University, Jude Lacek is attending North Carolina State, and Corrina Robertson is going to Concord University. Another Leo A. Vecellio, Sr., Memo-

rial Scholarship was awarded to Krista Harris, a graduate of Independence High School, who is attending Marshall University. In McDowell County, Johnna Beth Addair was awarded a Dr. Dante Castrodale Memorial Scholarship, named in honor of Leo A. Vecellio, Sr.’s brotherin-law, who was a well-known physician. Johnna is attending King College. Earning a Rick Vecellio Memorial Conservation Scholarship/Youth Conservation Award was Seuoya Bua-lam, who is attending Washington & Lee University. The Vecellio Family Foundation also supports numerous other educational and charitable organizations.

V&G Called In To Clear Slides

Project Briefs Ranger Improving Two Runways

Rehabilitating airport runways involves a very high level of precision, something Ranger Construction has become wellknown for throughout its Florida markets. The company is milling, resurfacing, and making other runway improvements at Vero Beach Municipal and Lakeland Linder.

With so many West Virginia roadways chiseled out of mountainsides, it isn’t uncommon for occasional rock or mudslides to block traffic lanes and require clearing, especially during very rainy weather. Beckley-based Vecellio & Grogan was called in recently to clear away slides on Madison Creek Road in Logan County, and on Route 3 in Raleigh County, where truck-sized boulders required drilling and blasting to clear.
