because they are founded on faith, hope, and love. – LIFE AT THE SACRED HEART, 1985

On The C over

From the time they come to us, our students embark upon a Sacred Heart journey—whether as a junior kindergartener exploring in the classroom; a middle schooler climbing new academic heights; or a high schooler gazing at the college horizon. The new look for our magazine, website, and viewbook reflects the pioneering spirit that brought St. Rose Philippine Duchesne to North America in 1818. Today, Villa Duchesne and Oak Hill School is one of 147 Sacred Heart schools established in 30 countries across the globe.

being our partners in mission. Your collaboration with us echoes

We love our Annual Giving theme: Cor Unum: Everyone. Every Year. For Every Student.

The State of the School was a night where we as a community came together around something that we all hold dear and love very much: the education of children. Designed with you in mind in the hopes that what we shared will increase your love and loyalty to this wonderful Sacred Heart community. Seven key areas give a board overview of the energy and direction of our school: Strategic Plan, Independent Schools Association of the Central States (ISACS) Update, Sacred Heart Commission on Goals (SHCOG) Update, Board of Trustees’ Goals, Enrollment, Finance, and Honoring our Legacy initiative. While this was a wonderful event, we want you to know that this type of honest and transparent communication has been a hallmark of our time here—now in our second year at the helm! We will continue to share with you all the good that we do, all the challenges we face, and all the successes for which we thank God!

the wisdom of Pope Francis who in his April 2017 message reminded all that the only future worth building includes everyone. With you, we are building that future. On the eve of the Bicentennial of St. Philippine Duchesne’s departure in 1818 from France on her journey of a lifetime, the beginning of the international Society of the Sacred Heart, and the first stirrings of the Society’s educational mission in this part of the world, we welcome the chance to provide updates— where we are headed as we move forward together, all of us, as the family of the Sacred Heart—to reach new frontiers we must “set sail.” We have an awesome responsibility. By design, our education is meant to be a journey, not a destination. Our school community—students, parents, alums, trustees, faculty, staff, and friends—have all honored our mission on this campus for 88 years. Here is to a vibrant future crossing whatever frontiers come our way! Gratefully,

ISACS and SHCOG both challenge us to be the best we can be—their views are not optional but instructive on how we should live our life here. For example: •

A comprehensive review of the Oak Hill curriculum gave birth to a new math program.

Spanish joined French and Latin as part of the language offerings at Oak Hill.

A new principal joined Villa Duchesne—Bridget Collins has the academic credentials as well as the instincts as one who grew up in a Sacred Heart home and educated in a Sacred Heart school.

Morning assembly returned to Villa Duchesne to build community and offer student more leadership opportunities.

OUR ALUMNI

Alum C orner Bridging the Years

I led a campus tour this past year for a variety of people from a variety of decades. Using photos from over the years, I shared the history of the school and the changes it has undergone since construction started in 1927. Many were surprised to learn that RACHEL DRONE GEHM ‘88 MANAGER OF

ALUMNAE/I RELATIONS

today’s auditorium used to be the gymnasium before Kenefick Gym was built in 1961. Others did not know the Chapel was built almost 30 years after the school opened its doors.

Before the Oak Hill campus was constructed, the primary grades were learning their ABCs in today’s art wing. After the tour, it occurred to me that while the physical plant has undergone many changes, the heart of the school, our Sacred Heart education, has remained constant. Our alumni remain the bridge that links the early years of the school to the current experiences of our students. There are

TRÈS BIEN AWARD

many opportunities for innovation to keep our school competitive and offering a high quality education. Just last year, the small classroom that was home to my Spanish classes in the late 1980’s is now a state-of-the-art media studio. I spent many afternoons doing homework in the Reference Room; it is now the Global Education Center, equipped to connect our students with their counterparts around the world. These campus improvements make me wonder what the tour I gave will look like in another 88 years. Please join us as we continue the sacred journey started when St. Rose Philippine Duchesne left France aboard The Rebecca 200 years ago. We need you to help us stay the course, providing a Sacred Heart education at Villa Duchesne and Oak Hill School for boys and girls age 3 through grade 6 and young women grades 7 through 12.

Mary Ellen Hickey Curran-Schnoebelen ’50, Betty Garesché Torno CH ’55, Jenny Warner O’Neil ’74, and Tonie FitzGibbon ’67 received the Très Bien Award at the 2017 Villa Duchesne-City House Alumnae Association Mass and Luncheon. These awards are presented to women who demonstrate in their lives the traditions and values of Sacred Heart education. If you would like to nominate an alumna for the Très Bien Award, please contact our alumnae association at tresbien@vdoh.org.
