Zoom Reunions

Class Happy Hour Zooms connected hundreds of alumnae in April, but as our other reunion plans were thwarted by COVID-19, we still honor the Class of 1970 by acknowledging their generosity and Villa spirit! As the reunion class that donated the largest amount to the 2020 Cor Unum Annual Giving Fund, we want to thank you from the bottom of our Sacred Hearts! Dear Sacred Heart FamilY ,

Looking back at our 2019-2020 theme, Grace and Grit now seems divinely inspired!

In our wildest imaginations, who could have predicted how essential those two virtues would be as we tested our resiliency, nimbleness, and fortitude? Yet, we thank God for the time and energy we all poured into cultivating those virtues, building reservoirs to draw on during this time of need.

The year delivered so many of God’s blessings to us. Early in the year, we received a $1M challenge gift for English and Math. This was soon followed by the largest gift in our history — $3M for the Student Life Center – a theater renovation and expansion to include an atrium and student gathering space, as well as a terrace overlooking the Back Bowl where Maypole is celebrated. These gifts and yours will help us close the Honoring Our Legacy RSCJ Major Gifts Initiative.

We asked and you responded so generously. As we have been forthright in saying: Now is the time; make Villa Duchesne and Oak Hill your first choice in giving.

The 2019 Bonne Chance Auction broke the record for the total number of families in attendance and raised a record-breaking amount of funds for essential needs.

On so many fronts, it was a record-breaking year despite and maybe because of COVID-19. We are so proud of the seamless pivot that our educators and families made to remote learning. Making the best of a difficult situation, our families and faculty embraced a new reality with Grace and Grit. The success of our

continuing to teach and learn quickly spread throughout St. Louis resulting in more applications, which turned into more enrollments.

For the first time in 13 years, this year delivered an increase in total enrollment. These past two years, we have seen an increase of 13% at Oak Hill. This double-digit growth is an indicator and a testimony to the caliber of our program, the satisfaction of our families, and the excellence of our educators. With a 40% increase in applications, we enrolled the largest number of new students in six years, representing a 14% increase in our middle school.

COVID-19 also brought with it the need to help a significant amount of our families to remain here despite financial hardships they were experiencing. We have worked with each and every family who needed help to bridge the tough times. Additionally, we have had many unforeseen expenses because of COVID-19. We made this unanticipated investment because, while we excelled at virtual learning, our excellence is in creating a campus culture where learning happens best in person. So after much hard work, we were able to open school with on-campus learning five full days a week this fall!

We thank each and every one of you for the role that you have played to contribute to our success of the past and present and especially our future! Together, we advance the hope that is at the very heart of our education.

CLASS OF 1979 SCHOLARSHIP

THE CATALINA AND CHARLES JAMIESON PERMANENT ENDOWMENT FUND

Every day, we are charged to live our lives through the lens of the Goals and Criteria. We are bound by faith, intellect, service, community, and personal growth. As Sacred Heart educators, this is a responsibility we take very seriously and one to which we are deeply committed.

The $7.5 million Honoring Our Legacy Initiative, launched at the beginning of school year 2017-2018, has realized gifts and pledges totaling $7,360,000.

Student Life Center and Theater Project

The Student Life Center and Theater will bring Villa Duchesne and Oak Hill’s performing arts and co-curricular programs to the next level through a complete renovation. Our auditorium will be transformed into a true theater and will include raked seating to accommodate 285 guests, scene shop, dressing rooms, green room, control booth, accessibility, and enhanced audio and visual technology.

The Theater will be supported by the Danis Atrium and a beautiful terrace overlooking Villa’s Back Bowl. Just imagine experiencing Maypole from this special venue.

The Student Life Center has been envisioned to serve as a hub for student activity and community gatherings. Designed with Goal IV, the building of community as a Christian value,

at its core, the Student Life Center and Theater will serve our community on so many levels. We are forever grateful to Kelli and Eric Schaefer for their leadership and generosity through the largest gift in the School’s history, as well as to those who have and who continue to join our efforts. This generosity and investment in our School inspires us all.

The Gueck Family Pavilion and Tkachuk Terrace

Thanks to the generous support of the Gueck Family and the Tkachuk Family and their commitment to the Honoring our Legacy Major Gifts Initiative, Villa Duchesne and Oak Hill School has an outstanding new facility located north of Condie Field.

The Gueck Family Pavilion and Tkachuk Terrace will serve the whole community, while taking the Villa Duchesne and Oak Hill School athletic programs to the next level. It provides a beautiful space for admissions events, classes, and outdoor

gatherings, as well as convenient and much needed facilities for our students, families, alumni, and friends. The Pavilion will serve as a formal entrance to Condie Field and will host both home and visitor’s team rooms, a viewing terrace with outdoor fireplace, the Saints Shack concessions, and restrooms.

We are grateful to the Gueck and Tkachuk families, as well as the many donors to the Pavilion Paver campaign, for their leadership in making this long awaited dream a reality.

The Cornelsen Challenge

This $1 million lead gift commitment received in September 2019 has been given to challenge the community to join the Honoring Our Legacy Major Gifts Initiative and to help endow the English and Mathematics Departments as part of the School’s ongoing commitment to academic excellence. We are most grateful for the generosity of our Cornelsen Challenge lead donors and those who have responded thus far. As of June 30, 2020, we have received $144,350 in gifts and pledges along with the $100,000 Cornelsen Challenge match for a total of $244,350. The School is charged annually to raise a minimum of $100,000 in response to the pledge commitment of $1 million.

The 2019-2020 Cor Unum Fund was a success! We exceeded our goals and you, our Sacred Heart community, made this happen.

Some years are different than others, and 2019-2020 yielded many successes and many challenges for our athletic program. Our athletes showed strength, resilience, and positive spirits. It was a year of Grace & Grit in the athletic arena. Here are some of the highlights of Villa Athletics in 2019-2020!

Villa’s Varsity Field hockey team continued their dominance by finishing second in the 2019 Midwest Field Hockey Championship. The Saints completed their regular season with a 17-2 record. The fan support at the state tournament was incredible!

Lizzie Barlow ’21 capped off her junior year season with a 3rd place finish in the 2019 MSHSAA Class 1 Girls Tennis State Singles Tournament!

Divers Annie Fox ’21 and Caroline Schneithorst ’21 placed 9th and 13th, respectively, at the state meet! We can’t wait to see what they accomplish in 2021!

Amy Federer ’14

Language Assistant with Meddeas, Spain

Amy moved to Spain in 2019 and started her work in education. She has always enjoyed being an advocate and mentor for children. She credits Mr. Spina and Mr. Rubio’s history classes with inspiring her to pursue work in education. She learned a lot from Mr. Powell about social justice and how important it is to educate our friends, family, and the people around us on things that are important but sometimes overlooked.

During the pandemic, Amy’s school switched to an online learning platform. She now gets to teach English in smaller groups to secondary students, and she is enjoying it. Amy carries the Goals and Criteria of Sacred Heart education — faith, intellect, social awareness, community, and growth — with her as she interacts with her students each day.

Guidance Counselor at Normandy High School

Briana pursued a career in education because she has always loved helping people. With many educators in her family, she was aware of the opportunities and the need in education. Her school counselor at Villa was extremely helpful in her journey.

Briana’s role has changed drastically because of the global pandemic. As a school counselor, she typically relies heavily on in-person interactions. “It’s hard to create essential relationships when the children you service are not in the building. There are many barriers to steady communication. There have been positive aspects, as well. The students are learning to reach out and advocate for themselves. I talk to more parents now than I ever did in the last three years that I have been at Normandy, because staying connected is necessary. In a district like Normandy, where the students are amazing but just lack the resources, it is allowing us an opportunity to change the way we operate and try new things. We are rising to the occasion because we care so deeply for our students,” says Briana. “We want our students to understand that no matter where you came from, you have the potential to be great, and it all starts with your self-awareness.” Briana does not allow her students to sell themselves short. She builds her students up to be confident and challenges them to broaden their horizons. She wants them to know that they can make the world a better place!

Sixth Grade Humanities Teacher at School of the Future in New York City

Genevieve believes that education is the most powerful way to transform a community. She became a Teach for America Corps member in New Orleans and fell in love with her students and the field. When she returned to St. Louis to teach, she had a growing awareness of a need to reimagine what public education looks like. Genevieve is co-founding a new public charter elementary school that will open in fall 2021. Atlas Elementary is a unique school model that instills a love of learning while empowering kids to build a healthy future for themselves, their community,

Taylor pursued a career in education after a positive experience working with high school students as a camp counselor. She teaches sixth grade humanities at School of the Future in New York. This year, Taylor is worried about her students’ well-being every day.

“Teaching through a screen is hard. Connecting over Zoom is not the same. Even in person, social distancing prevents hugs and gathering on reading rugs, and it’s tough to give a reassuring smile through a mask. What is constant is that we show up every day, and we try to laugh and learn together.”

One aspect of the Sacred Heart mission that Taylor is carrying into her work today is the St. Madeleine Sophie quote, ‘For the sake of one child.’ “Now more than ever,” says Taylor, “I think looking at the individual circumstances of students and families is vital. How can we reach this one during remote learning? What tools are absolutely essential to make that one feel seen? Where do we need to slow down, and where do we need to push? There is no ‘one size fits all.’ I learned that at Villa.”

Taylor mentions Ms. Rubin-Schlansky, Mrs. Gray-LeCoz, and Mrs. Rabenau as teachers at Villa who inspired her. “They made me want to be my best, inspired me to read, and really truly knew me. I wouldn’t be the person or the teacher I am today without Villa and Oak Hill,” says Taylor.

Jamie Finger Suthers ’97

Jamie has always had a love of young children. After watching a beloved aunt work with her second graders, Jamie knew she wanted to follow in her aunt’s footsteps as an educator. While she was at Villa, Mrs. Menendez de Culp inspired Jamie. “She showed care not only in the educational setting but in life. She was not only a teacher I could go to for help in Spanish, but I could go to her for anything. She would listen intently and push me to be the best person I could be. She challenged me to take risks and believed in me when I did not believe in myself,” says Jamie.

Teaching during a global pandemic is both difficult and joyful for Jamie. She is serving as the first grade virtual teacher for her school. She misses the relationships, personal interactions, and certainty. In preparing to teach her class, she thinks about how she will adjust teaching from the classroom setting to the virtual setting. But she is finding joy in the student who learns more snap words than before or the student who is writing sentences on their own to create a story. She is determined, along with her students and families, to build a community of loving, caring children.

Dianna Bommarito Wilson ’84

Dianna spent the first part of her professional career in corporate America and found the most rewarding opportunities to be ones that allowed her to coach and teach. The transition to education felt natural. She credits her Villa teachers Mrs. Reavis, Mr. Spina, and Mrs. Good with inspiring her. During her time as a student in Sacred Heart schools, Dianna felt she was a part of a community in which students were valued, cared for, and respected. “I learned the importance of compassion, forgiveness, generosity, and the happiness that comes from helping others. I was taught to lead a life of faith in God, integrity, and leadership. It’s been many years since my graduation, but I carry all of these things into my personal and professional life,” says Dianna.

Leading a school during a global pandemic has presented unique challenges and forced many changes in operations, but it has not interrupted the Scottsdale School’s focus and dedication to their students’ academic, emotional, social, and spiritual growth.

This summer welcomed our 7th class of Stubblefield Alumnae Interns to campus! Our largest class to date of seven alumnae made for a busy and productive summer. Their work in our Marketing and Communications, Advancement, Business, and Upper School Administrative departments were vital in getting the school ready for a very different year. These driven and intelligent young alums spent their days creating videos, analyzing databases, designing programs, planning, organizing, fundraising, and more. The Sacred Heart mission calls Children of the Sacred Heart to nurture their faith, intellect, social awareness, community, and personal growth even after leaving our beloved campus for the “real world.”

Introducing Villa’s Redesigned House System

In 2020, our student council members and our Dean of Student Life, Mrs. Kaplan, worked together to re-envision Villa’s house system, which was initially introduced in 2017. Our houses are meaningful, comprehensive, and relationship-focused community programs that bring us together. Each grade level at Villa is divided into four advisories, called ‘maisons’. Each maison is in one of four houses, Barat, Duchesne, Jenkins, or Stuart. Students will remain in their house and maison all of their years at Villa. The house and maison program took on a particularly important role as we put in place safety procedures for COVID-19 this year. In fall 2020, students entered Villa via different entrances according to the house and spend the mornings bonding with their maisons instead of in assembly. Relationships are at the heart of Sacred Heart education!
