Renovations to Kenefick Gymnasium were made possible because of lead donors and those who contributed to Children’s Challenge 2017. The project created community spaces for students, athletes, and the hundreds of guests who use the gymnasium throughout the year. The spaces feature a welcoming lobby with enhanced security, enlarged clubroom, a collegiate-level team room, renovated restrooms, new trophy display cases, new electronic divider curtain — and, Kenefick Concessions. The ribbon-cutting ceremony was held at Saints Start-Up Sunday on August 12, 2018.

Dear Sacred Heart FamilY

#JoinTheJourney! Our new hashtag imperative is getting rave reviews — most likely because it rings true with the view of raising children and teaching students. It is a fitting image of both parenting and teaching and it is a great tag line to invite others to benefit from this wonderful experience that we call Sacred Heart education.

The wisdom of our spirituality offers a similar image saying that it is more about the journey than the destination. We at Villa Duchesne and Oak Hill School have our eye on both what is and what can be. This ability to pivot between the two is a skill and an art. Frankly, it is something that our faculty and staff do extremely well — and they do it daily. Their example is an inspiration to the students.

Thirteenth-century Franciscan Meister Eckhart said that if the only prayer we ever utter to God is thank you that would be enough. We are inspired by that as we thank you and thank God for you! For without out you, we could not do what we do at Villa Duchesne and Oak Hill School.

Listed in this magazine are our generous donors, our most loyal givers, and our most strategic philanthropists who have made us their favorite charity. Coupled with those who have given back are stories of what one learns and experiences at Villa Duchesne and Oak Hill School, and how that experience bears great fruit in the lives of our alumni. Congratulations and welcome to our recent graduates who have given for the first time, and thank you to all those who have generously responded and increased their gift. Our mission in St. Louis is stronger because of you!

Thank you for being a gift to your families, your work place, and to the world that you live in — day in and day out. As we celebrate the gift of St. Rose Philippine Duchesne, we say thank you to St. Madeleine Sophie Barat who gave us such a wonderful gift in the person of her dear Philippine. So to all the religious who have been good stewards of this gift of Sacred Heart education, and from whom we received the gift of this school, we say thank you. We honor your legacy by joining you in this journey and inviting others to do the same.

Villa Duchesne and Oak Hill School is the top choice for parents in the region. It is where you send your sons and daughters when you want the very best start for your children. We have the market on scholarship and values because both matter to us in inseparable ways.

A final story from a graduate of the Class of 2018:

“Having graduated from high school, I have come to the conclusion that the ultimate job of high school is to help young adults find their passion. This is only attainable if the students, teachers, and administrators create an environment of ‘wise freedom’ that allows students to explore their interests. During my time at Villa, each teacher influenced me in a different way. Every time I showed them my enthusiasm for a topic, they responded with equal, if not more, excitement at my interest. This reciprocation of energy helped fuel my endeavors to push myself and grow. This support led to my leadership in starting the environmental club. Throughout my journey leading this club, I have found that I have not only opened the school’s eyes to its footprint on the planet, but I have opened my eyes to the positive impact I can have on the world.

“Without your support and open arms, I would not have become the person I am today. Villa allowed me to explore a passion of mine through leadership and working for positive change. It truly is one of the most valuable things a school can provide its students. Thank you for being there for me through high school and moving the school towards the future.”

CHILD OF THE SACRED HEART

ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP FUND

Established in 2005 by a generous family to support the education of Children of the Sacred Heart in grades K–3 who have demonstrated financial need. Principal balance is $500,000 with an earnings balance of $112,566.

CONDIE FIELD ENDOWMENT FUND

Established in 2000, the fund assists in the sustainability of Condie Field. Principal balance is $24,000 with an earnings balance of $13,261.

MARY FUSZ DOODY CH ’66

Inspired by the 50th Reunion of Mary’s Class of 1966, her family established the Mary Fusz Doody CH ’66 Scholarship Fund to support academic excellence and the education of the whole child in the tradition of Sacred Heart. Sara Doss Geoghegan ’97 attended the University of Missouri-Columbia where she received her bachelor’s degree in Business Marketing. After working as a Business Developer in Chicago, Sara stayed at home following the birth of her third child and does a tremendous amount of volunteer work at her children’s school. Sara and her husband, Sean, live in Chicago with their three children, Brendan (5), Kathleen (4), and Paddy (2). They also own Roscoe Village Pub, a neighborhood tavern in the Roscoe Village area, which has been the venue for two of our recent Alumni Regional Connector Events.

An Honoring Our Legacy event launched the community-wide initiative on May 24, 2018.

Giving back to Villa is important to me.

My heart was filled with joy during my years at Villa. The Sacred Heart spirit and mission are a part of my foundation, which I utilize in raising my own children. My husband also attended Sacred Heart in Chicago at Hardey Prep. It is a neat bond that we share and is a part of our family. Our contributions are a way that I can show gratitude and share the Sacred

Heart spirit that is a part of me. I regard my friendships created at Villa as building blocks of my character. The teachers, caring environment, and coaches (Jane Ellen Kuenzle †) helped develop who I am as a business woman, wife, and mother.

Other generations stepped up financially to help the mission when I attended the school. It is time for my generation to do the same. We may not be able to

celebrate congé or have those amazing goûter cookies as adults, but we know and understand the excitement, the giggles, and the homework-cramming sessions that are going on in those halls at Spoede Road right now.

Educating Hearts

Time and time again, I hear our current students remark about how amazing the faculty is at Villa Duchesne and Oak Hill School.

Students feel that their teachers genuinely care for and guide them every day. Alumni from across the decades can name teachers that made a lasting impact on their years here. These Sacred Heart educators carry the torch that St. Philippine Duchesne lit 200 years ago. Whether you have memories of conferencing about your term paper, winning tug-of-war at Field Day, or auditioning for the fall musical, each one of those events included a Sacred Heart educator supporting your success.

Entering his 37th year of teaching at Villa Duchesne, Costan Spina has impacted the lives and minds of more than 4,000 alumnae, whether he lectured in his classroom, cheered on the field, or applauded show choir. Recently, I asked Mr. Spina what his favorite subject to teach has been over those many years. He said, “It’s hard to define my favorite course because I have always felt that I teach students rather than courses. Hence, all my courses have been my favorite because students have been so motivated and engaged. My students can make any course a favorite due to their appreciation of their learning.”

This student-first approach to learning is alive and well in the halls of our alma mater. While our courses and campus evolve to meet the needs of our students, there still exists a constant—educating our students to recognize their intrinsic value in a way that enriches their lives in the years ahead. For that, we are forever blessed to be Children of the Sacred Heart.

Rachel Anderson ’17 was named Rookie of the Year in her conference and All-NEAC First Team. Rachel’s rookie season at Wells College not only resulted in these amazing awards, the Wells Express Women’s Volleyball team made it to the NEAC Final Four and are off to a great 2018 season.

Isabella Leeker ’16 is the co-captain of her Louisville Cardinals field hockey team this year. As a junior, Bella has been playing some strong defense and helping charge the way for her team to a winning 2018 season.

After studying Computer Science and working as a Research Assistant at SLU, Mary Hogan ’13 served as a Software Developer at RedCard Systems. Mary has now begun her graduate work at Princeton University to receive her PhD in Computer Science.

Ellie Hattrich ’12 and Jacob Mohrmann were wed on September 8, 2018, at Ste. Genevieve DuBois Church. Ellie and Jacob had their wedding photos taken on the Villa Duchense and Oak Hill campus and were thrilled that so many of her Villa classmates were able to be there for the special day. Mother-of-the-Bride, Lourdes Garcia-Ferrar Hattrich ’82 and her husband, Steve, were pleased the rain took a break during the day to allow for the photos to be taken. PHOTO 2

Sarah Paletta ’11 married Salvatore “Sal” Revetta OH ’05 on September 15, 2018. Sal and Sarah met when they were five years old during their first day of kindergarten at Oak Hill. Their friendship grew and during the following years at Villa and Priory, they dated. After Sarah and Sal graduated from Holy Cross and Tufts, respectively, they realized they kept being drawn back together for a reason. Sal proposed to Sarah on campus and even used that same setting for their wedding photos. Rachel Minogue ’10, after receiving her BA in Economics from Emory University, went on to Johns Hopkins University to complete her Master’s in International Studies. Since then, she was chosen to be a Presidential Management Fellow and now works as an International Trade Specialist at the International Trade Administration in Washington, DC. As a trade specialist, Rachel is part of an elite category of economists whose duties are to study the effects of globalization on business, and to develop comprehensive business plans to ensure success abroad. Her economic background has also allowed her to work at a National Think Tank, Third Way, and she has even had an article published in The Hill, a Washington, DC based political newspaper and website.

Abigail Adams Sirevaag ’07 married Kristofer Sirevaag on September 29, 2017. Amanda Kwon ’07 and Emily Roman ’07 were both bridesmaids in her wedding.

In February 2018, Madeline Orling Connolly ’02 was appointed to the bench as Associate Circuit Court Judge of the 22nd District-St. Louis. After Villa, Madeline went onto graduate from Valparaiso University and later got her law degree from St. Louis University. She spent five years as an Assistant Circuit Attorney in St. Louis and later was an Associate Attorney at Tucker Ellis, LLP, where she defended companies in mass tort and product liability civil litigation matters.

Mary Walsh Giles ’98 was named to the 2017 Super Lawyers Rising Star list for the second consecutive year. An attorney with Briner Law Group of Chesterfield, Mary’s practice focuses on real estate and title resolution matters. She earned a bachelor’s degree from the University of Missouri and her law degree from the University of Dayton. Not only is Mary an active member of the Wildwood Board of Adjustment, but she is also an active board member on the Villa Duchesne-City House Alumnae Association.

After graduating from Villa, Sarah Naseer ’97 went onto NYU and Brown University and has now taken on a new role as the President of FEED Projects. Living Goal 3, a social awareness which impels to action, has made this a meaningful and tangible way for Sarah to continue service. FEED Projects focuses on the issue of hunger and the idea when a child is given a free, nutritious school lunch, it can break the cycle of poverty. Every product has a number stamped on it that signifies the amount of meals or micronutrient packets provided with its purchase.

Alison Hobelman Morrison ’96, after receiving her BA and Master’s in Nursing from SLU, went on to practice as a Registered Nurse and a Nurse Practitioner, which is what she currently does at Mercy Kids Autism Center. Genevieve Barlow ’91 has been busy launching the first non-alcoholic craft brewery in the US. As a co-founder of Wellbeing Brewing, Genevieve and her business partner own one of only two breweries in the US that brew solely non-alcoholic beer.

Congratulations to Dawn Parsons ’85 for being elected a fellow of the International Society of Barristers. Membership is extended to advocates of exceptional talent whose qualities include integrity, honor, collegiality, and embody the spirit of the true professional. Membership is by invitation only after a rigorous screening process involving lawyers and judges to identify trial lawyers who meet its standards. While Caroline O’Fallon Davis ’70 did graduate from Villa, she was first a student at City House. Although City House closed in 1968, the history and love of the school lives on as the uniform that Caroline and her sisters wore in kindergarten has been passed down to multiple generations. Caroline’s daughters wore it when applying to Oak Hill and now her granddaughter, Elizabeth O’Fallon Davis, “LOVES” wearing the old City House uniform. Even though Elizabeth lives in Boulder, CO, with her dad, Keith Davis OH ‘94, and her mom, Kate, she is excited to wear it when attending Mass. PHOTO 12

Stavra Gianoulakis Bayer CH ’68, as the City House Class of 1968 Senior Class President, was still fulfilling those duties 50 years later as she organized a great 50th-reunion gathering during the summer for her classmates. Not everyone could attend the April Reunion Weekend on campus, so they planned another fun-filled weekend which found them gathering at the site where City House once stood and where the pedestal still stands. Friday evening was spent at the original site of City House, 1120 S. 6th Street, which is now a building owned by Stewart Ryckman, the husband of Denise Savage Ryckman ’68. The Saturday event of pickleball had to be canceled because of rain, but the evening was hosted at the home of Kate Lippert Human ’68 with a delicious dinner made by Mary Frances Koch ’68. And, Sunday’s brunch at the home of Nancy Morrison Barnidge ’68 was wonderful with multiple cooks providing great food. It was a marvelous weekend to catch up with longtime friends although it never seemed as though so many years had passed between them. “We’ve got the C.H. spirit, let the whole world hear it!”

Sally Hennessey Roth ’65 shares the exciting news that her granddaughter, Mary Kate Stephens, daughter of Mary Ellen Roth Stephens ’92, has begun her freshman year in Villa’s Class of 2022.

Memory Lane

It was dedicated in 1961 as the Activities Building. Today, Thelma Kenefick Gymnasium, named for “Kenny” who served as athletic director for 34 years, is the home of the Saints. Student athletes now pursue cross country, basketball, track & field, soccer, field hockey, lacrosse, golf, tennis, volleyball, and swimming & diving on campus. Renovations in 2018 included a new team room, club room, trophy cases, concession stand — and facelift for the stone fireplace where hundreds of students have posed over the years.
