CAL POLY POMONA, POMONA
School of Architecture
ARC2021A/Instructor: Mitchell De Jarnett
The theme of this project is to design the School of Architecture for Cal Poly Pomona. It includes a tower containing offices and studios. My theme for this project is curves and it would be fun to do flexible circulation.
Most of the plinths, not used for lectures and laboratories, have been removed to provide wide views, which also contribute to the circulation. On the other hand, some structures are overhanging, which also creates some pedestrian tunnels for people to pass through. One can easily reach the ground from the tunnel via several stairs. People usually walk on the top of the plinth, and we can also go through the tower to reach the roof at the top.
After going up the tower, I try to create more open space for the students so that they feel more relaxed and less crowded. I made my towers the most transparent to allow more sunlight. Since the sun is very strong where we are, I also added some shading to ensure that the incoming sunlight would not be too harsh and heat the whole building.
The connection of the tower to the base is mainly by the connecting curve, which is very evident on the façade.

Mix Using Housing
ARC3021A/Instructor: John N. Bohn
The project is located in siverlake in Downtown LA, and the surrounding neibour has residents and some small commercial areas. In this project, Mixed use housing is required. The first and second floors are commercial areas, including grocery stores, bakeries, restaurants, day care, and laundry shops. The commercial area is on the north side of the project, and is connected by a staircase facing the commercial area to ensure that residents will not be disturbed when outsiders need to enter the commercial area.
There are different types of residential buildings on the second floor and above to help people have more choices. Each unit has its own outdoor space, and there will be some shared open space on each floor. On the fourth floor, the green roof is used to allow residents to choose to grow food or flowers in their own area.

Modern Housing

The site is located in 1100 Fedora, and the neighbor is divers, which having half of them are married and half are single. Thus my project is not aiming a specific group of people, but more diversity. By using the concept of Fujian Tulou, I revised the program, so now I have the private on the bottom, and public at the top.
My project is basically two buildings, and each building have two units. Each unit is allowing up to 2 groups of people live in. The two group will be divided by the stair and a laundry room, so that they are not district others. Each group has its own bedroom, family room, and a small balcony, but this can be changed depending on the situation. The second floor will be a shared living room and kitchen. The two units in one building will share the outdoor space, and it will come along with an outdoor kitchen. While they can negotiate what they want the outdoor space to be.
My project is not at the traditional building, which we have bedrooms on the first floor, and the reason is to help the residents can reach their private space as soon as possible, and to avoid unnecessary contact with their neighbors. The main purpose of this project is trying to provide a space that embraces only their residents and give them a quiet space to live in.
