Dear Friends of the Ballet, Greetings and welcome to Ventura County Ballet’s performance of Tchaikovsky’s classic ballet The Sleeping Beauty. A complete set of scenic drops painted in Russia by Yuri Samadurov, Chief Artist of the Komi Republic State Theatre of Opera and Ballet grace our stage. We hope you will also enjoy the artistry of this year’s national and international ballet professionals, as well as the incredible talent of VCB’s pre professional dancers trained at the Ballet Academy Ventura, the official school of the Ventura County Ballet. The opulence of the beautiful sets and costumes of this performance will also add to your enjoyment of this classic of the ballet repertoire. Ventura County Ballet’s (VCB) mission is to present performances that inspire the next generation of dancers; providing the opportunity to dance side-by-side with professionals. This develops BAV student’s artistry and timing, while inspiring them through the many years of careful and difficult training. We are proud to be in residence at the Ballet Academy Ventura, VCB’S official school. Having worked through the challenges of the recent Thomas Fire, the true dedication of our dancers, was brought to light, illuminating a spirit that would not give in to true challenges. Ballet and ballet performance teach a silent strength, which develops in our ballet dancers each and every class that they attend. VCB continues to strive to connect artists, audience and community with innovative performances through our collaborations with the Rubicon Theatre, Ventura Music Festival and Namba Performing Arts Center. This coming December, we will again bring The Nutcracker, with full symphony, to the Oxnard Performing Arts Center and Ventura College Performing Arts Center. We invite you to support the efforts of VCB, a 501(C)(3), with your attendance, enthusiasm and financial support. We wish you all a bright and sunny spring and summer. We sincerely hope that you will also make our December 2019 The Nutcracker an annual holiday tradition for you, your family and friends. Kathleen A. Noblin Executive Director

The Story of Sleeping Beauty ACT 1

SCENE 1: PROLOGUE - CHRISTENING The Royal Court is busy with preparations for the christening of the beautiful new baby Princess Aurora. The King and Queen are celebrating with a grand party to which they invite all the Fairies in the kingdom as honored guests. The fairies will be godmothers for the lovely new baby. Much to their dismay, the King and Queen discover that Fairy Carabosse was omitted from the guest list. The good fairies begin to give their special blessings on the baby princess, while Carabosse and her Goblins make their presence known. With anger at her omission from the guest list, she places a curse on the infant and predicts that on her sixteenth birthday she will prick her finger on the spindle of a spinning wheel and will die. The King and Queen and Court are horrified but the Lilac Fairy, who has yet to give her blessing, comes forward and lessens Carabosse’s curse. She predicts that the princess will not die from the spindle prick, but instead will fall into a deep sleep. She and the court will sleep until the princess is awakened by the kiss of her “true love”. SCENE 2: SIXTEENTH BIRTHDAY PARTY With the passing of sixteen years, Princess Aurora is celebrating her birthday with the Royal Court. During the festivities, Princess Aurora is given a bouquet by the evil fairy Carabosse. The bouquet holds the golden spindle from the spinning wheel. She accepts the spindle unaware of its sharp edge and pricks her finger and falls into a deep sleep. The Lilac Fairy appears and casts a spell on the entire kingdom so that everyone will sleep until Princess Aurora is awakened. ACT II SCENE 1: THE FOREST One hundred years have passed and Prince Désiré becomes lost in the forest. The Lilac Fairy appears and tells him about the sleeping Princess in the distant castle. She shows the Prince a vision of Aurora. He vows to free her from the spell. The fairies appear and send Prince Désiré to the castle. SCENE 2: THE KISS Carabosse and her goblins appear. Prince Désiré defeats the evil fairy with his sword and enters the castle to find the sleeping Princess. He is taken with her beauty and kneels to kiss her. He falls immediately in love with her. The Princess, along with the entire kingdom, awakens. She also falls in love with the sight of this brave Prince. The King and Queen are delighted and consent to their marriage. ACT II, SCENE THREE: THE WEDDING The kingdom is celebrating the wedding of Princess Aurora and Prince Désiré. The Gem Fairies – Diamond, Sapphire, Ruby, Emerald and Silver arrive to bring the blessing of wealth and prosperity for the wedding couple. Storybook characters come to entertain the Royal guests wishing happiness on the couple. Princess Aurora and Prince Désiré delight the Court with their wedding dance. The Tale Ends – true love conquers all, and they live happily ever after.
