VIVA CON AGUA UGANDA -2020

ANNUAL REPORT

Forward, WASH Delivery & Access in the ‘New Normal’

While the pandemic got the better of us, we cannot sit back. We try to get on our feet and respond to the challenges of our times.

During the year, we were hit badly as friends and colleagues got infected. Some recovered, some didn’t. Our activities were halted, but we supported in other ways.

We responded through raising funds in the cosmos for more than 1,000 water filters for communities in Kampala and Wakiso through our partners SPOUTS of Water Ltd. Equally we supplied 30 handwashing kits for communities in Kamwokya.

This supported more than 5,500 people to continue staying safe and access safe drinking water. We continue to stay safe, while trying to support our communities to do the same.

Our approach of the Universal Languages Approach (ULA) is still our unique selling point. We want to develop further ideas on how to use sports, music and arts to create awareness and influence behaviour change in Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) practices.

We advise to continue staying safe, and we wish nothing but the best for you and your families.

From Kampala, with love.

What triggers communities and schools?

Communities are heterogenous; they have varied WASH interests and needs. VcA projects and programs unite them all without leaving anyone behind. Everyone wants to have fun and joy, that is why VcA is using fun and play through Music, Art, or Sports.

F4W in communities and schools starts with identification of participants, including communities, coaches, and teams. This is preceded by baseline studies focused on WASH KAP to guide selection of communities and schools. Community and school coaches of selected teams, who for a critical component of our project are trained. Certificates of completion awarded alongside basic football equipment to support project delivery in schools and communities.

The trained community and school coaches organize, and conduct workshops and training sessions themed around F4W drills with their community and school teams within their communities and schools. All sessions are supervised and monitored by the project implementation team

The F4W niche: Outsmarting the usual.

In 2020, Ugandans, including those living in the marginalized areas of Kampala needed WASH services than ever before. As the country entered the COVID-19 lockdown, the demand for functional WASH facilities soared. Nonetheless, amidst the COVID-19 lockdown and tight restrictions, F4W delivered while implementing the SOPs. The F4W niche: Outsmarting the usual.
