Happy 4th Birthday Failsworth Focus! Its hard to believe that another year has passed and its our 4th birthday. We are so pleased that Failsworth Focus has gone from strength to strength and it continues to help advertisers generate more business. We would like to thank Andrew Clough for his brilliant Uncle Monkeys Musings, Bygone Days and Countdown to WWI. We really enjoy reading his stories and we know that our readers do too! Thank you to Lorna, James and Simon for giving their time to help deliver the magazine each month. It’s a brilliant mag this month with plenty of new (and old!) advertisers. Good luck to you all! Until July, keep it local! Best Wishes Matt & Vikki x

Uncle Monkeys June Musings We seem to be going through a phase of anniversary’s at the moment, last year the start of World War I and D—Day, this year Magna Carta and the Battle of Waterloo. Waterloo clearly had an impact in this area, with a lot of named mementos. Ashton has a district called Waterloo, a pub called “The Hero's of Waterloo”, and the whole area is festooned with Waterloo Streets and Wellington Roads. I always think the Duke of Wellington had the best address ever—Number 1 London. A trifle presumptuous but then again I bet no one told him so! He visited Manchester in 1830 on the opening day of the Liverpool Manchester Railway. He was entertained in a warehouse that still stands at Liverpool Road Station, now part of the Museum of Science and Technology. He was kept there, as by this time he was Prime Minister and not over popular. He had a reputation as a bit of a straight-shooter, - in every sense of the word, so I'm not sure who was being protected from who! I've always had a lot of respect for him, he said it like it was. When they built a memorial at Waterloo he said they had “Bug_ _ _ _ _ _ “ his battlefield!. Goodness knows what he would have made of the situation today. One thing is certain, if he’d seen the noisy protest I witnessed yesterday on Market Street, I'm pretty sure he would have requested “A whiff of grapeshot!”. BYGONE DAYS
This photo from my Uncle Tom’s collection (he is on the extreme left) shows a group of workmen outside number 2 Marlborough Mill in the late 1950’s. As the mill approached closer, the former machine minders were used to dismantle the mules they had worked on. The colour of the overalls suggest this is what they were doing Photo: Tom Taylor Clough Andrew Clough Please call Matt on 07738 163 455 for details on how to advertise

KITCHEN GARDEN
Keep all fruit well watered especially during dry spells; mulching with organic matter will help reduce water loss and keep down the weeds too. The first strawberries are now cropping - hurray - the bliss of eating a sweet, sun-warmed home-grown strawberry must surely be one of the highlights of the English summer! Surround the plants with straw - this keeps the fruit off the soil and helps prevent soil splash which can spread botrytis. If the weather turns wet, strawberries are upsettingly prone to this grey mould keep a beady eye on your crop and if you spot it, remove all infected fruits and remember not to put them on the compost....this will only spread the problem. Peg down runners into pots to increase the number of plants or if you have enough, pinch them out near their origin. Protect fruit trees, currant bushes and gooseberries with netting; birds love developing fruit buds and your entire crop can disappear with astonishing speed unless protected! Gooseberry sawfly can be devastating - look out for caterpillars and pick them off as soon as you see them - alternatively use Earth Matters (this can be used safely on edible crops) or ask in the centre for advice. Harvest your culinary gooseberries - pudding varieties will not be ripe enough to enjoy raw until next month, although they can be used for cooking. ELDERFLOWER CORDIAL - one of the joys of summer....pick the flowers for this easily made and refreshing drink. Add a slug of cordial to whipped cream for a subtle fillip to fruity puddings or put a head or two in a muslin bag when you are stewing gooseberries to introduce their fabulous muscat flavour into the equation.

Countdown to WWii In 1970 I visited Pickering in North Yorkshire with friends. The guesthouse we stayed at had a very old garage, and an even older grandfather. Mr Trowsdale as he was called had been an engine fitter and mechanic on aircraft in the R.F.C. in World War I. He had an impressive collection of spark plugs from engines of that era, and an even better collection of stories. It seemed that the aircraft were a far greater danger to the pilots than the Germans. Landing involved trimming the aircraft while clipping the throttle and adjusting the fuel mix. Failure to get this right inevitably ended in fire, - as many of his stories did. Incredibly, air crew losses in the first war were over twenty thousand, and sadly many who survived, even some of the aces were lost in flying accidents in the 1920’s and 30’s. Willis Taylor who lived at number 9 before we did was also an aircraft fitter in the R.F.C. A skilled joiner, his job was working on aircraft frames and rigging. Sadly I only remember him as an old gentleman in the 50’s, when I was too young to hear his reminiscences. Andrew Clough Please call Matt on 07738 163 455 for details on how to advertise
