Blowing

An adult should pierce the egg at both ends with a utility knife, widening one hole a bit. Poke a straightened paper clip through wide hole; stir yolk. Place ear syringe in smaller hole; squeeze. Contents will pour out. (Wash hands well.)

Dyeing

It's easy to make the dye: Cover the work area with paper towels. In a jar, mix 1 teaspoon vinegar, 20 drops food colouring, and 1 cup warm water. Submerge the egg (keep it down with a paper cup containing water). Soak for 5 minutes for light colours and 10 minutes for darker shades. Remove the egg with tongs. Place on a wire rack to dry.

Decorating

Dye or paint should be fully dry before beginning. Use crepe paper or felt for features and stick with glue. Use black felt pen for eyes.

Uncle Monkeys April Musings Watching an FA Cup quarter final this week, I was amazed to hear people taking about Manchester United’s disappointing season, after loosing 2 out of their last 22 matches! Clearly these days expectations are too high, they should have watched lower division games in the 1960’s and 70’s, that was when staying power was tested, as in a 0-0 draw when Oldham Athletic played on a Tuesday evening in 1970 away to Bradford Park Avenue. A game professionally acclaimed as the worst in the history of football. It was a time when as recently retired sports writer Geoff Powell described “You dream of mid-table mediocrity!” European games were things that were occasionally heard of at Old Trafford, teams such as Partizan Belgrade, Steaua Bucharest, Locomotiv Leipzig, Spartak Moscow and Borussia Moenchen Gladbach (the latter described by the ‘Likely Lads’ as the West Hartlepool of West Germany!). You can say what you like about Communism, it may have suppressed half of Europe, but it did throw up some evocative names. I'm not sure I can stand the thought of another 2 months of build up to the General Election, although as a keen fan of fiction I am looking forward to the various manifestos. A couple of pearls I've heard so far are 20mph limits on arterial roads (I told you express barges were not far away), and regions in charge of their own health budgets. The latter conjures up thoughts of those steely eyed women in white coats who worked at “the clinic” in the 1950’s and who had clearly just been de-mobbed from the Waffen SS. The idea of them with blunt hypodermics and a budget is too much to cope with. I'm of to cheer myself up with the highlights of England's performance in the Cricket World Cup! BYGONE DAYS

This is Daisy Nook Farm taken in the early 1950’s when it had probably not changed much for the last hundred years. As the path down from Pratty Meadows via the monkey stump emerged at the bottom of the hill you walked through a narrow overgrown path with Red Bills on your right and a large old barn in front of the farm on your left. The building is now owned by and has been tastefully renovated by the Clark family. Photo: Will Clough Andrew Clough Please call Matt on 07738 163 455 for details on how to advertise

GARDEN MAINTANENCE FOR APRIL Beware late frosts and keep vulnerable plants and new shoots protected at night if frost is forecast. Don’t be tempted to put out tender bedding until much later on in the month and even then be prepared to cover it if necessary. Deadhead daffodils and narcissi, give them a liquid feed or sprinkling of bonemeal and then let them die down. Don’t cut off the leaves as they are necessary to replenish the bulb for next year. Keep deadheading spring bedding to keep it looking neat and encourage new flowers. Continue with the spring cleaning. Hoe your borders, getting rid of weeds before they take hold - annual weeds such as bitter cress and groundsel are enough of a nightmare without allowing them to go forth and multiply by seeding. If it’s dry, attack ground elder and the like with systemic weed killer painted onto the leaves. Mulch away while you can still see what you are doing and before the herbaceous growth really takes off. Use your own garden compost or leaf mould, well rotted manure, the contents of out-of-date grow bags or ready-made soil conditioner. Now the soil is warming up and things are starting to grow, add general purpose fertiliser before covering with mulch especially in borders, the fruit and vegetable patch and containers. If you have already mulched, draw it back (if possible), tease the soil a little, add fertiliser and replace the mulch. Make new beds and borders - mark the shape with sand trickled from a bottle, remove the top layer of growing vegetation and dig the ground over, incorporating as much organic matter as possible. If you are making a bed in the lawn, remove the turf – if you dig it in the buried grass will regrow and regrow and regrow and... Clean and repair your garden tools, book the lawn mower in for a service and check garden furniture for any rot. When it is warm enough, treat sheds, fences and trellis with wood preservative; brushes and rollers are fine for most things, however a sprayer is well worth buying for tricky projects such as woven panels!

KITCHEN GARDEN The fruit garden is one area in which there is not a lot to do in April other than admire the blossom and ponder the harvest en route! Plant strawberry plants in planters or hanging baskets for a pretty and delicious crop this summer. Protect fruit trees and gooseberries with netting; birds love developing fruit buds and your entire crop can disappear with astonishing speed unless protected! Check your rhubarb; harvest it if it has grown, or if it is still in its infancy, keep the forcer on. To encourage faster growth, cover the forcer with horse manure; the heat will produce even more dramatic results as it rots down - and don’t forget that slugs enjoy forced rhubarb just as much as we do, so be vigilant!

Vegetables The centres are now full of plantlets of vegetables, salads and herbs. For those that find growing from seed daunting, this is the ideal solution! Remember many need hardening off so be wary about planting them straight outside - ask in the centre for advice if you are unsure. Many vegetable crops can be sown as seed this month - check the instructions on the packet and plant away! Broad beans, carrots, lettuces, spinach, salad leaves, leeks and chard are just a few ideas to get your healthy, cheap and home-grown food underway! Traditionalists plant potatoes on Good Friday - plant first and second earlies first, main crop by the middle of the month. Plant shallots, garlic and onion sets as well as asparagus crowns in friable well-drained soil. If you have a frost-free greenhouse, get ahead with the summer crops - sweet peppers, tomatoes, aubergines and salads can be planted inside. (If it remains cold, check the temperature requirements on the seed packet and wait if necessary.) Countdown to ww1 My maternal Grandfather Stanley Crofts’ like so many others joined up in 1914 with his life long friend Crompton Travis. Unlike most, they did not end up on the Western front, but were sent to Egypt to guard the Suez Canal. (I used to think that my Grandad built it as a child!). It must have been strange for 2 men who had never left Hollinwood in their lives ending up in Egypt. Heron St to Cairo, not a normal set of destinations. I was too young to know him properly, he died in 1958 but I remember my mum saying she used to get upset as a child over-hearing conversations about his experiences with his friends, some of whom had served in France and Belgium. He went on to become an officer in the Home Guard in the second war, so had the distinction of serving twice. Crompton his friend out lived him by a good number of years, and I remember him as a very genial sort of man, always chuckling quietly to himself, he probably couldn't believe his luck. His son Harry went on to become Deputy Head at Chadderton Grammar School for Boys. Andrew Clough
