Welcome to the February 2012 edition of Failsworth Focus Happy New Year and welcome back to the Failsworth Focus. We hope you had a great Christmas and look forward to hearing from you in 2012.

We are pleased to announce that we will be incorporating the Ashton area into the Failsworth Focus from March and hope that it will generate even more local business. FOCUS ON‌ SANKIKOI Unit 1, Beresford Street, Failsworth Tel: 0161 681 4818 Sanki koi opened its doors to the public on August bank holiday 2011. Set up by owner Steve Dennis and manager Jeff Pollitt, the shop took nearly nine months to set up while the pair juggled this new venture with their full time jobs in the building trade.

Both have a common interest in tropical fish and reptiles, Steve specialises in the rift valley cichlids while Jeff specialises in the reptiles.

The tropical fish area of the shop consists of over 60 tanks stocked with fish from all over world including tetras, barbs, gouramis, mollies, swordtails, guppies, angels etc. while the rift valley room boasts over 45 tanks with cichlids from lakes Malawi, Tanganyika and Victoria. These three lakes are commonly known as the great lakes of Africa and are the largest land locked lakes in the world. Sanki koi is one of the few shops in the U.K. specialising in these particular fish and we have customers who travel the length of the country to purchase these.

As well as fish we also have an extensive range of dry goods, medicines, treatments and full set-ups. Another unique point to the business is our range of second hand tanks, cabinets and equipment making fishkeeping more affordable to the average person.

The reptile section is still in its infancy and will be completed over the next couple of months however we do have a small range of reptiles and dry goods in stock and also have a weekly delivery of live and frozen reptile food. We also specialise in custom built vivariums.

Since opening the business has gone from strength to strength and plans are already underway to extend in to other areas including on line sales, specialist Siamese fighter fish area, aquarium and cabinet showroom, birdroom and also outdoor pond section selling koi and relevant pond products.

Heart Fondant Chocolate Cake

Ingredients 100g Butter, plus extra for greasing 50g Plain Flour, sifted, plus extra for dusting 100g Chocolate 3 Eggs 100g Icing Sugar

Method 1. Preheat the oven to 200 degrees c 2. Grease 4 heart shaped 300ml ramekins with butter and then dust with a little flour 3. Break the chocolate into pieces and place in a heatproof bowl over a pan of simmering water. Make sure the water does not touch the bottom of the bowl. Add the butter and allow both to melt.

4. In a separate bowl, mix together the eggs, flour and sugar until smooth.

5. Pour in the butter add chocolate and mix.

6. Spoon the mixture into buttered ramekins and cook for between 10 and 15 minutes until the tops are cooked and the centres are gooey and molten.

7. Remove from the moulds right away and serve with a scoop of ice cream.

7th Manchester Scouting Do you want to find something exciting to do in your free time?

Come join your local Scout group 7th Manchester Open to Boys and Girls from Ages 6 + th

The 7 Manchester St. John’s Failsworth Scout Group was formed in June of 1908 and has been in continuous existence ever since, in fact three years ago we celebrated our Centenary with a weekend of activities that attracted many former members from different generations back to Failsworth to participate in the festivities.

Although the Group takes the name of St. John’s Parish Church we welcome membership from many faiths, indeed scouting is a multi-faith organisation. Membership of Scouting is open to both sexes from the age of six and runs through to age eighteen and beyond and is sectionalized as follows:

Beavers aged 6 to 8

Cubs aged 8 to 10 ½

Scouts aged 10 ½ to 14

Explorers aged 14 to 18

All sections are staffed and run by a number of adults who are all unpaid volunteers.

We do a variety of things with camping and the outdoors a high priority. Scouting is a lot of fun, develops initiative and teamwork and is definitely a ‘training for life’.

Uncle Monkey’s Musings Seeing for sale signs outside the Macedonia on Ashton Road East stirred a memory or two. Young people might be surprised to hear that it was a musical hot spot back in the 1960’s! The so called “swinging 60’s” didn't have a massive effect on life in Failsworth in fact I'm sure life like the TV was black and white only, but the music was good. Saturday night dances alternated between the Macedonia, and the Bethel church on Oldham Road, featuring local groups.

The best of them were the “Black Cat Bones” featuring Keith Jones on drums and “The Black Watch” with charismatic front man, (and later local councillor Ian Thompson).

The evenings would seem very tame by modern standards, but they were great at the time and always very safe, I never remember a single moment of threat at either venue.

I always liked the “Maccy” and whenever I see now near - neighbour Tony Clough I always think of him in a dinner suit and bow tie, on stage announcing “good evening and welcome to the Maccy!”. A 60’s icon like Keith Fordyce.

Keith Jones mentioned earlier was a Chadderton Boys Grammar School at the same time as me. It must have been a good year for musicians, as I also recall James Litherland who went on to play professionally with “John Hisemans Colliseum” before forming “The James Litherland Band”. I lost touch with his career after that, but I'm sure he stayed in the music business.

A recent conversation with Tony and his wife Gaynor brought up the name of Edward Everett who's mum ran a wool shop on Ashton Road East—(another hark back to an earlier era). That shop like a lot of others carried in its window a discreet advert for “Spirella Corsets” a formidable looking under garment a bit like a flack jacket. I have no personal experience of combat, but I'm sure a spirella corset could have stopped a bullet. I'm sure it didn't pass the notice of the Ministry of Defence—nice to think spirella corsets may still be saving lives in Afghanistan.
