Welcome to the April edition of Failsworth Focus Easter is a lovely time of year. As a family we enjoy an Easter egg hunt, a trip to Daisy Nook fair, days out at the seaside and catching up with family and friends. As I am writing this, the sun is shining, so lets hope that’s a sign of things to come!! As the weather improves we tend to start doing those little jobs that we cant do in the winter. Keep a copy of Failsworth Focus by the phone just in case you need some help with them!

We try to vary our delivery round each month, but we have had lots of enquiries from people who haven't received a magazine yet. There are over 15,000 homes in Failsworth and gradually we are getting round to as many as possible.

Uncle Monkeys Musings Whilst driving down Oldham Road in the twilight recently, I passed Firs Hall lit up, and experienced a ghost of the 1950’s.

Firs Hall was known to several generations as “The Clinic” and is still enough to send a shiver down the spine of a 60 year old. It was the era of polio, and anti-polio injections, which were given at “The Clinic”. The place was enough to strike terror into the heart of anyone under 11. You went into the main room after passing through an impressive hallway with a staircase that led to who knows where, and sat down with your Mum. You then moved round seat by seat as you moved one by one towards the open door where you could see the white coats and smell the antiseptic. Waiting for your turn was purgatory, the person who designed the place must have trained in North Korea. By the time you got to the door there was no crime you wouldn't have admitted to If only the authority's had listened, the “Jack the Ripper” mystery was solved in 1955!

You had to go through with it, the only alternative was polio and a spell in an “Iron Lung” - pictures were supplied of angelic looking children sealed up in cream coloured iron contraptions.

No worries about children's rights and feelings then, you had the right to remain silent, and had damn well better use it.

Then one day, there was an air of celebration about the place, injections had been given way to serum on sugar cubes, oxygen was needed to revive participants and a full generation was able to look forward to tooth decay and the reckless dentistry of the 1960’s. Thank God for progress!

Simnel Cake Cupcakes Ingredients about 450g/1lb marzipan 275g/9¾oz caster sugar 150ml/5fl oz sunflower oil 50g/1¾oz honey 1 tsp vanilla extract 75g/2½oz full-fat cream cheese 4 medium free-range eggs 150g/5½oz currants 75g/2½oz raisins 200g/7oz plain flour 2 tsp baking powder 2 tsp mixed spice icing sugar, for rolling edible gold balls, to decorate

Preparation method Place 12 paper muffin cases in the pockets of a muffin tray, and preheat the oven to 180C/350F/Gas 4.

Roll the marzipan out to about 3mm/⅛in thick and cut two sets of discs, a dozen of each: one measuring about 5cm/2in in diameter and the other about 6cm/2½in.

Stack these on a plate while you make the cake mixture.

Beat the sugar, oil, honey, vanilla and cream cheese in a mixing bowl until smooth, then beat in the eggs until thoroughly mixed through. Stir in the currants and raisins, then sift in the flour, baking powder and mixed spice and stir well.

Spoon about 1-2cm/½-¾in of cake mixture into each paper-lined pocket, lay one of the small marzipan disks on it and press it down gently to remove any air pockets, then spoon more of the mixture on top to three-quarter fill the papers. Bake for about 25-30 minutes, or until a skewer pocked in comes out almost clean.

When the cakes are out of the oven, place a disc of marzipan on each and very gently press it down and around: the heat from the cupcake will soften the marzipan and seal it on. Then press eleven gold balls around the edge of the marzipan on each cake and leave to cool.
