Cataract Detection Signs Cataracts are the leading cause of vision impairment in people age 40 and older. By the age of 75, approximately half of all Americans have cataracts. Most cataracts develop slowly. But with time, they will eventually interfere with your vision. and will require surgery. Early cataract detections signs include… • Cloudy or fuzzy vision • Appearance of halos & glare • Difficulty seeing at night • Increased light sensitivity • Fading or yellowing of colors • Double vision in a single eye At first, stronger eyeglasses can help, but since cataracts don’t go away, they will usually require surgery at some point in time. Fortunately, cataract surgery is generally safe and effective. If you notice any changes in your vision, see your eye doctor right away.

Rehabilitation
Aging in Place is staying in the home you live in. And, if needs arise, those needs are met by hiring outside assistance. Assistance can include home making assistance, transportation, personal care and skilled medical care. Frequency and duration of assistance varies by situation and can range from weekly visits to live-in assistance. Hospice can be available to assist the terminally ill.
Short-term live-in centers that offer rehabilitation services to help recovery from an injury, illness or surgery.
Independent Living – Senior Communities
Skilled Nursing
This is the choice of many active Seniors that choose to downsize. Senior Living Communities are age-restricted, usually to those 50 or 55+, and consist of low-maintenance apartments, homes or villas, attached or detached, where residents can care for themselves, completely, without assistance.
Respite Care
Assisted Living An Assisted Living Residence is a fulltime residence for adults that do not need ongoing skilled nursing care but require ongoing assistance with everyday tasks, such as dressing, bathing and eating.

Hospice Care When you hear that a loved one has an illness that is considered terminal, it’s shocking and sad. Some of us go into a form of denial, hoping that it’s not true. Some aren’t quite sure what to do. Although most of us have heard of Hospice Care, some may avoid calling on hospice thinking that, if they do, it means that they’re giving up. But, in reality, Hospice Care is the kindest thing that we can offer to loved ones that are diagnosed with a terminal illness. And the sooner it is started, the better. Patients in Hospice Care are more likely to have their pain controlled and they’re less likely to have to undergo countless doctor office visits and medical tests 20
that they don’t need. Hospice Care comes to you. With Hospice Care trained nurses work with a team that includes a doctor, social worker, counselor, home health aid and trained volunteers that all work together to meet physical, emotional and, if desired, spiritual needs. Hospice Care nurses are on-call 24/7 to make emergency visits or to answer questions. It provides pain & symptom management and also medical care that includes medical supplies, equipment and medications. It is extremely helpful for caretakers and family members, too, because they know that they’re not in it alone. In addition to medical support offered for the patient, hospice also offers

caregiver education, training and counseling for those that are interested. Hospice Care is available if a patient’s doctor states that they are expected to have six months or less to live. But if hospice is needed for longer than 6 months, it can be extended. What some do not realize is that hospice does not have to be a permanent choice. If the patient chooses to start treatments that could possibly cure their disease or if they get better unexpectedly, they can end the service. And if Hospice Care would ever be needed again, it would be available. According to the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services
(CMS), out of 1.3 million patients that received hospice care in 2014, 11% were discharged from hospice care and 13% survived beyond the life expectancy period of 6 months. In 2010 The New England Journal of Medicine stated that several studies also showed that hospice patients live longer, which is believed to be due to slower disease progression because of the expert pain and symptom management that hospice professionals are able to provide. Although facing the terminal illness of a loved one is a difficult and scary time, Hospice Care can help.

Libraries are a wonderful place to visit at any age. But, did you know that the St. Louis County Library offers many wonderful programs and services especially for Seniors? Library vans make regularly scheduled visits to residents of Senior Living Communities. And, even if you are confined in your own home due to illness, 22
disability or advanced age, the Public Library System can provide free library service, by mail, delivered to your home. Participants may receive library materials that include books in regular or large print, magazines, DVDs or CDs. Specific items may be requested, or staff can select items for you, based on information that you give to them. Material is mailed at no cost to the resident and the

mailing bags include a label for free return to the library. Items are checked out for 6 weeks. They may be renewed twice, by request. And there are no overdue fines. If you’re an avid reader, the St. Louis County Library can even help you find your next book! Just tell them about your reading preferences, and they’ll suggest similar books that you may like. And, if your friends also love to read, book discussion kits are available that include multiple copies of a book as well as a discussion guide for fun conversations. The St. Louis County Library also hosts hundreds of virtual
programs on topics like physical fitness, mental health, social issues, arts and crafts, book clubs and more. And, if you would like to learn more about technology or other resources, you can set a one-on-one appointment with a Genealogist, a Librarian or a Trainer. The St. Louis County Library also offers more than just books. You can check out tabletop games, musical instruments, video games, telescopes, binoculars, portable projectors, and more.
