As your University continues marching toward becoming best in class, we are digging deeper and working harder—retooling everything we do to serve students in tough times.

Universities faced many challenges in the 2021-22 academic year, from continuing to serve students remotely to threats of violence that many other HBCUs faced during Black History Month. These experiences have led us to continually review every aspect of our work and take bold, forward-looking action. Here are just a few examples:

• VUU joined the Virginia Foundation for Independent Colleges, which advocates for leading liberal arts universities;

• VUU strengthened our connection to state government, holding our first-ever Legislative Day to introduce faculty and students to the General Assembly of Virginia;

• VUU partnered with Apple to create the next wave of coders;

• VUU enacted new policies—the first among HBCUs—to ensure our funds are invested with African American, diverse firms.

Actions like these are delivering real results. For example, the Class of 2022 made history, as 19 graduates earned a Grade Point Average of 4.0 and above—the largest number of students to do so since the University’s establishment. More than three-quarters of the graduating class earned a 3.0 GPA or higher. In addition, we recognized students who were the first graduates of our new Executive MBA and Master of Political Science programs.

“More students are choosing Virginia Union, fundraising is up, and the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges reaffirmed VUU’s 10-year accreditation.”

More students are choosing Virginia Union, fundraising is up, and the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools

Commission on Colleges reaffirmed VUU’s 10-year accreditation. We even won a national award for storytelling. The momentum is real, and we can feel it around campus.

This past year has been a time for action and also for reflection. Every University must ask itself: What more can we do to serve students? The pandemic era has pushed us to answer this question with greater urgency. We must find ways to help students graduate with a degree and be fully prepared to succeed in a complex world. Students want and deserve to be ready for life once they graduate, and Virginia Union is uniquely positioned to help. We have been doing just that since 1865.

As the world moves past the pandemic era, please know that your University is strong and moving in the right direction—and fast. Our march to “best in class” continues, and I ask for your continued prayers and support for our students and Virginia Union University.

With Panther Pride,

VUU STUDENT SUCCESS

The University has multiple pathways for academic achievement and innovation. The value of rigor, relevance, and relationships embedded in our culture underscores the importance of ensuring that the academic programs offered result in our students being highly sought after upon graduation.

VUU Earns Reaffirmation of Full Accreditation

The Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC) has reaffirmed VUU’s 10-year accreditation.

The rigorous reaffirmation process started in 2019 with continuous improvements across the institution as VUU makes tremendous strides toward ‘Best in Class.’

SACSCOC’s accreditation review examines all aspects of an institution including, but not limited to, academic programs, faculty qualifications, financial stability, governance, physical facilities, support services and internal processes related to strategic planning, assessment and evaluation – collectively referred to as “Institutional Effectiveness.” This accreditation is required for federal financial aid and serves as a timeless hallmark of institutional quality. VUU first earned accreditation from SACSCOC in 1935 and was the first institution to undergo the review process virtually due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

“There is power in every student. We want to be sure they all have access to higher education and complete their degree with as little debt as possible.”

—Governor Ralph Northam

“I am proud of the institution’s continued advancement toward our ‘Best in Class’ strategic goal,” said Dr. Hakim J. Lucas, President and CEO of VUU. “Our reaffirmation by SACSCOC shows the university’s overall progression and reveals areas where we can continue to excel. We will await a new decision while we continue to push forward into our next phase of growth.”

Virginia Union University to Receive $10M to Expand Tuition Assistance Grant

Governor Ralph Northam announced an increase in the Virginia Tuition Assistance Grant (VTAG). The announcement was made at Virginia Union University.

“There is power in every student,” said Governor Northam. “We want to be sure they all have access to higher education and complete their degree with as little debt as possible.”

In Virginia, roughly 23,000 students receive VTAG. The increase will provide an additional $1,000 per year for students. Currently, 18% of VUU’s total student population receive $16,000 over a four-year degree term, which covers 16% of their tuition. With the increase in tuition assistance, students will now receive $20,000 over four years, covering 20% of tuition costs. The increase would bring an additional $316,000 to VUU and a total of $6,320,000 over the course of four years.

“Our reaffirmation by SACSCOC shows the university’s overall progression and reveals areas where we can continue to excel.”

—Dr. Hakim J. Lucas

“We are excited about Governor Northam’s decision to make higher education more affordable to students and families and the impact that it has on our community,” said Dr. Hakim J. Lucas, President and CEO of VUU. “His decision allows us to stand strong in our commitment of finding ways to reduce debt for our students.”

VUU Hosts Coding Academy with Apple

Two-Day Coding Academy Prepares Students For Technology Advancement

VUU students, alumni, and VUU employees participated in a two-day VUU Coding Academy to learn about app design coding and mobile app development. “We are pleased to continue our commitment to coding and app development.,” said Dr. Hakim J. Lucas, President, and CEO of VUU. “Last year, incoming freshmen were given new iPad bundles to prepare them for better success. This year, through VUU Coding Academy, we prepare students for the workforce and allow our faculty, staff, and alumni to continue gaining relevant experience as our world advances technologically.”

“The focus of the Coding Academy is to learn the fundamentals of coding for mobile app development that will serve as a resource to our communities,” said VUU Provost Dr. Mignon Jacobs.

The first cohort of the Coding Academy was limited to 24 participants and was led by Apple Professional Learning. “We began with basic coding principles by downloading apps from the App Store,” said Jacobs. “Next, the beginning level principles were taught in a gaming platform, and then we took the next steps in writing our own code.”

Four groups were formed and tasked with using coding and app development skills to solve real-world problems. Among the ideas generated were, identifying funding resources for students, employees at educational institutions resolving processes and workflow matters, and families and communities’ access to resources to include mental health, finances, and more. In addition, groups prepared and presented initial prototypes of their apps and received feedback.

Over the summer, participants consulted with their groups and experts from Apple to continue work on their prototypes. Participants received a ‘certificate of completion’ and are encouraged to earn industry-recognized App Development with Swift certifications. Successful apps will move to the next phase of development and production.

Virginia Union University is accountable to its students, its community, and the governing Board of Trustees. The University has a long-standing commitment to the financial and economic impact of operational business practices that will promote sustainable growth for the institution and the surrounding area.

Virginia Union University Board of Trustees Update Endowment Policy Mandating

60% of the Investment Portfolio to be Managed by Minority Firms

The Virginia Union University Board of Trustees announced the implementation of its revised Endowment Policy, which mandates 60% of its investment portfolio to be managed by minority-owned firms. This decision is the first of its kind making VUU the first HBCU to mandate that the majority of its endowment be managed by minority firms.

“The vote of VUU’s Board of Trustees is unprecedented. I commend their extraordinary vision to develop an investment strategy that will increase the financial strength of our beloved University,” said Dr. W. Franklyn Richardson, Chair of the VUU Board of Trustees. “It is important that the people who use their hard-earned resources to educate themselves and their families also be afforded the opportunity to steward investments at our university.”

“This action ensures the university can attract and partner with the increased number of successful billion-dollar minority investment firms,” said Dr. Hakim J. Lucas, President and CEO of Virginia Union University. “

We will show the success of this strategy and encourage other HBCUs to do the same. “Confirmed by vote of the Board of Trustees, the partnership is the first of its kind in the community of Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). VUU’s first strategic partnership is with global investment firm, Advent Capital.

Tracy Maitland, President of Advent Capital Management, echoed the significance of the alliance, stating “ Advent is deeply honored for our long-term partnership with Virginia Union University. We thank Virginia Union for this close partnership and look forward to continuing to work together to foster the economic development of the university and the administration’s deep commitment to the economic empowerment and freedom of enterprise for all residents of the City of Richmond and the Commonwealth of Virginia.”

The Board’s decision is a beacon to the administrations’ commitment: Student Success, Academic Success, Entrepreneurial Enterprise, and Brand Prestige. Virginia Union University is listed as a Top 50 HBCU, according to the U.S. News & World Report 2022 Best Colleges rankings released on September 13, 2022 for the first time in university history. Additionally, the rankings list VUU as a top 30 performer on social mobility.

Virginia Union University Receives $1M Grant from Bank of

America Funds Will Be Used to Prepare Students for Careers in the Financial Industry

VUU is the recipient of a $1 million grant from Bank of America for its innovative approach to preparing students for careers in the financial industry. VUU’s new Workforce Development and Financial Markets Program is called “MORE” which stands for My Opportunity is Real Essential.

“As we strive to better serve our students and surrounding communities, it is imperative that we provide them with the tools to be successful beyond the classroom,” said Dr. Hakim J. Lucas, President and CEO of VUU. “We are pleased to accept this grant from Bank of America to launch the MORE program, which will allow us to bring financial literacy tools to communities who may not have access otherwise. This workforce development initiative is a stepping stone on the path to generational wealth within our communities.”

The grant from Bank of America is a component of the “Way Forward Initiative” – a multi-year collaboration between education firm EAB and the bank – and is part of the bank’s $1.25 billion, five-year commitment to advance racial equality and economic opportunity. Virginia Union University is an inaugural cohort of the initiative.

“HBCUs play a vital role in creating opportunities for students and communities of color by providing education needed to address economic and social inequality,” said Victor Branch, Bank of America Richmond President. “At Bank of America, we believe it is essential that these institutions receive the support they need to continue in their mission.”

VUU ENTREPRENEURIAL ENTERPRISE

The integrity and appreciation of a student’s degree hinge on the University’s ability to hold itself to a higher standard than the marketplace demands. Our ability to understand and respond to our key stakeholders’ needs is imperative to creating a globally recognizable brand and a top-choice University to attend, be employed with, or support financially.

Virginia Union University Breaks into the Top 50 HBCU according to U.S. News & World Report

Virginia Union University’s march to excellence continues, as the latest national rankings show Virginia Union rising more than 30 positions in just four years.

Today’s announcement from U.S. News & World Report shows Virginia Union propelling upward, now ranking as the country’s 43rd-best HBCU, after breaking into the top 50 for the first time last year. The university was not ranked at all just four years ago, when the upward trajectory began:

2022: #43

2021: #48

2020: #56

2019: #72

2018: Not ranked

In addition, Virginia Union ranked #24 in the country for advancing social mobility, comparing some 200 national liberal arts universities. Only one Virginia university ranked higher than Virginia Union.

“Social mobility” measures the extent to which schools enrolled and graduated students who received federal Pell Grants. These students typically come from households whose family incomes are less than $50,000 annually. Most Pell Grant money goes to students with a total family income below $20,000.

“This move forward is a testimony to the hard work of our faculty, staff, students, and alumni. Working together, they are propelling this University forward, even while grappling with the pandemic. This is what professionalism looks like, it’s what teamwork looks like, and it’s what love for a University looks like. ”

“Virginia Union is making dramatic progress toward our goal of being the country’s top HBCU,” said Dr. Hakim J. Lucas, President & CEO of Virginia Union University.

“This move forward is a testimony to the hard work of our faculty, staff, students, and alumni. Working together, they are propelling this University forward, even while grappling with the pandemic. This is what professionalism looks like, it’s what teamwork looks like, and it’s what love for a University looks like. Make no mistake: We are just getting started.”

U.S. News & World Report measures “academic quality using seven categories: outcome measures, graduate indebtedness, assessment by administrators at peer HBCUs, faculty resources, financial resources, student excellence and alumni giving. These indicators include input measures that reflect a school’s student body, its faculty and its financial resources, along with outcome measures – such as graduation rates, first-year student retention rates, graduate indebtedness and social mobility – that signal how well an institution educates students and whether they eventually graduate.”

FINANCIAL REPORT

Virginia Union University continues to focus on fiscal health with a summary of the business model. The goal of the model is to ensure the resource allocation for the institution maintains a healthy and fiscally responsible position that fuels the way to Best-in-Class. The budget is predicated on a zerobased budget approach that incorporates projected revenues and subsequent constraints. The revenue is indicated by the enrollment mix of incoming and continuing students charged on a per unit cadence. The total cost of attendance is comprised of options chosen by the educational prowess of the student and incorporate a range of tuition, fees, room, and board. All factors are assumed into the model that are calculated into a pre-allocatable sum.

The budget of the university utilizes three main categories that are considered prudent to its success. The first and most important category is personnel. Intellectual property is the lifeblood of the university, which is maintained through the largest portion of the budget. The second category of expenses are institutional other than personnel services (OTPS) which include fixed items germane to the continued sustainable operation of the university. The third category involves the strategic initiatives of each Vice President known as divisional OTPS.
