The man who died as a result of an industrial accident in Vaughan Tuesday morning is a 24-year-old from Keswick, police have confirmed.

An employee of PGC Services, he was using a vacuum truck to do excavation work for new hydro poles in the Dufferin Street and Hwy. 7 area when the truck’s boom made contact with a high-voltage power line, according to PowerStream officials The man was electrocuted and suffered critical injuries, according to York Regional Police. He was rushed to hospital where he later died.

The deceased, Jake Gordon, was remembered by a sea of friends and family gathered at the Tim Hortons on Woodbine Avenue in Keswick Tuesday night.

by Alesandro and his improv group, entertained a packed house of about 700 people at Le Jardin Conference & Event Venue Friday night.

Celebrated Canadian comic Russell Peters was expected to

take the stage, too, as a secret celebrity guest, but he didn’t make it to the show due to issues with his flight to Toronto, emcee Elvira Caria told the crowd.

He did, however, pledge to donate $10,000 to Alesandro’s cause.

China, according to Concord/Thornhill North Councillor Sandra Yeung Racco.

“It was great,” she said.

“I’ve been on a number of (trade missions) over the years as an elected official and I have to say this was probably the most productive in a number of ways.”

Yeung Racco travelled to China with economic development officer Elaine Yim Spencer and representatives from four Vaughan businesses as part of the business trip headed up by Premier Kathleen Wynne.

The delegates travelled to Nanjing, Shanghai, Yangzhou, Zibo, Hong Kong and Beijing from Nov. 4 to Nov. 14.

During that time, local business representatives signed several agreements that are expected to generate about $116.5 million and create 820 jobs over five years, Yeung Racco said.

Among the deals that were struck was a $10-million joint venture between Vaughan’s Ionada Inc. and Jiangsu Ya Dong International Investments Co. to manufacture and market marine exhaust gas cleaning systems in China and internationally.

That deal is projecting up to 20 high-tech research jobs in Ontario.

Door Components Canada and New Concept Quality Doors, a Vaughan-based manufacturer of residential doors and door components, signed a letter of intent with

Zhejiang Zhongda Yuantong Industrial Corp to establish an international distribution centre in North America.

Another local firm that forged a partnership was Hot Yoga Wellness.

The company has developed a program that blends yoga and qigong, a discipline based around slow, fluid movements and deep breathing, Yeung Racco said.

That garnered interest from the Chinese Health Qigong Association in Beijing, which signed an agreement with Hot Yoga Wellness to provide training to qigong masters country-wide.

“They’re going to be training teachers from China so that they can teach yoga/ qigong there because they want to introduce it right across China,” Yeung Racco said. “They’re looking at training about five people from each province every year, so that’s about 500 teachers.”

The potential value of the agreement is pegged at $1.5 million over five years.

Yeung Racco also spent about three hours meeting with representatives from Eontime Real estate Development Group in Beijing.

“They have expressed a real interest in developing Canada’s largest indoor mall, hotel entertainment centre complex,” she said. “They’ve been talking to us and looking for about a 35-acre piece of land to do this. … They’re very interested in our VMC (Vaughan Metropolitan Centre near Jane Street and Hwy. 7) as well as our Vaughan Enterprise Zone (Hwy 427 area from Hwy. 7 to Nashville Road).”

Yeung Racco said the company is working on drafting a letter of intent.

In addition to the agreements that were signed, Yeung Racco said the trade mission gave the city a chance to promote the newly launched Vaughan Internationalization and Commercialization Centre to potential partners.

As well, she signed a letter of intent with Yihai Group, a company with about $4 billion is assets, to share information about the Ontario curriculum and partner with Vaughan schools for teacher and student exchanges.

“This time our trade mission was more than just meeting and introducing each other. What it was really down to now was much more solid relationships that we’re establishing,” Yeung Racco said.

It’s not yet known how much the trade mission cost the city, as they’re still tallying the bills, Yeung Racco said.

Tax cap right idea, but it needs to be lower

I

was an English major at university, meaning I got to read novels by Charles Dickens not everyone gets to (or should I say, is forced to) read.

At university, you may stay out late drinking beer with your pals, meaning when reading long Victorian novels the next day, your eyelids tend to ... feel ... zzzzz.

But eventually I did get through Dickens’ Bleak House, which contained a character I will never forget, as she reminded me of people I used to encounter at university, have run into since or see in the mirror.

Mrs. Jellyby, she was called, was very worried about the fate of people in Africa and proclaimed it loudly, but was not overly concerned about her own family, living under the same roof as she.

Her youngest child has his head stuck between the railings on the stairs when we are introduced to him. She is oblivious, hard at work on her charity mission.

In some ways I see a small army of Mrs. Jellybys has emerged from among us as Canadians — spending money to help a tiny fraction of the people in desperate need to show the world how great we are, a “moral superpower”, a term I heard recently for the first time and which seems to apply here, while showing newcomers how to adapt to our great way of life.

Here’s a tuque. Here’s a hockey stick. This is Tims. Enjoy. (On university campuses, they call this Imperialism.)

To bring 25,000 newcomers from one part of the world is practically nothing in a country of 33 million. The previous 10,000 commitment was a drop in the bucket.

The new government has out duelled their adversaries by upping it to two and a half drops.

There are millions of refugees living in camps in Turkey and Jordan who’ve been there for years.

There are millions of refugees in camps in Africa, too, from other conflicts, droughts, famines.

Clearly we can’t help them all by bringing them here without more of a sacrifice on our part, which at this point we are not making. To me, what we’re doing now is largely symbolic, feel good, and political.

Bernie O’Neill Could we do more good for more people by simply sending our billions to where they can help more people in the camps and doing more on the world stage to end conflicts? Most likely — if we felt we could trust our money actually got to those who needed it.

At the same time, we should be trying to find solutions, as former prime minister Lester Pearson did during the Suez Crisis.

Meanwhile, we label anyone who might disagree with the haste with which we implement our plan, in the wake of a horrible terrorist attack, “a racist”, which is the double-barrelled put-down of all put-downs.

Now that the Trudeau government has even admitted the deadline is too tight, that security is a priority (though I’m pretty sure it needs to be THE priority) let us hope the word racist will stop being thrown about so freely and we can get people here in a safe, orderly fashion.

While it is wonderful to see people mobilizing to help refugees, you wonder how many of us do enough to help out others who need help. There are lots of people, old, poor, sick, disabled, who face mighty struggles here already. Unfortunately for them, it is not as glamorous or supportive of a political cause to give them a hand. Some of us do, but plenty of us don’t lift a finger. Something for all of us Mrs. Jellybys to consider, myself included.

I was raised in the Catholic church (where a frequent sermon was that charity should be anonymous) but don’t go to church now, as I’ve long felt organized religion, of all kinds, is about dividing people, “moral superiority” etc.

Let’s help the refugees. And let’s tone down the talk of our moral superiority for doing it.

I would like to begin by thanking the mayor and city council for taking the time to solicit public input regarding the cities budget.

I support the city in its mandate to cap tax increases, however I think that the per cent maximum allowed is rather high, and I am hoping that the city will reconsider this amount.

To begin, the average wage increase in Ontario this year is projected to only be 2.5 per cent, furthermore the Consumer Price Index (CPI) is only up 1.3 per cent.

As you can see the property tax increase proposed is significantly higher than the average wage increases citizens are getting as well as the overall CPI. If you also consider the significant increases Vaughan residents have experienced with electricity and water rates, the cost of owning a home in this city has become unaffordable.

We must distinguish between what Vaughan residents need (eg. garbage pick-up, road repairs) versus what is nice to have.(eg. will spending more on transit increase rider-ship?, are building bike lanes necessary?).

We should also consider other sources of municipal revenues. For example, can we rename community centres and sell these naming rights to corporations (similar to Air Canada Centre)? Could we look at increasing user fees for municipal government services?

It would be great if the City of Vaughan would be the only municipality in the province to not increase property taxes on its residents! Think of all the seniors that live in our community who are struggling with fixed incomes. Young families trying to save for their kids post secondary education or trying to pay down their mortgages. Not increasing property taxes will go a long way in helping all Vaughan residents.

Deal ‘financially compelling,’ says Vaughan mayor, who is PowerStream chair recouped within 10 to 11 years.

“In Vaughan’s opinion, the 7.7 per cent expected return on the acquisition of Brampton Hydro is compelling,” Bevilacqua said. “We also have seen over the years that PowerStream has always achieved great results in reference to synergies.”

He noted that when PowerStream was formed the forecast was for a 16.5 per cent in “synergy energy savings” and the actual savings was 19 per cent.

Again, in 2009, with the Barrie merger the forecasted savings were 9 per and they actually achieved 11 per cent, he added.

“These savings, of course, will be passed on to consumers,” he said.

“This is a consumer-first driven initiative to make sure we put downward pressure on rising energy costs.”

Merger discussions began several months ago after the provincial government announced it was going ahead with some recommendations made by the Premier’s Advisory Council on Government Assets, which included a proposal to sell up to 60 per cent of Hydro One. A 13-member board of directors will oversee the new power company, currently dubbed MergeCo, with three representatives appointed by Vaughan officials.

“It’s very important for people to understand that ultimately the citi-

zens of Vaughan are shareholders in this company so it’s really a great day for them,” Bevilacqua said.

The approved merger now requires approval from the Ontario Energy Board.

It is anticipated that the deal will be closed in the spring of 2016.

The merger of PowerStream with two other municipally owned electricity distribution firms is surging ahead and Vaughan Mayor Maurizio Bevilacqua is pretty charged up about it.

“This deal is financially compelling both from a shareholder perspective and from a customer perspective,” said Bevilacqua, who serves as chair of PowerStream’s board of directors and has been a vocal proponent of the merger.

“All-in-all, this deal makes sense for the citizens of Vaughan.”

The proposed merger cleared a major hurdle last week when a deeply divided Markham council, which along with Vaughan and Barrie jointly owns PowerStream, narrowly voted in favour of the merger plan.

That plan will see PowerStream join Mississauga’s Enersource Corporation and Horizon Utilities Corporation, owned by Hamilton and St. Catharines.

They will then purchase Hydro One Brampton from the province for $607 million and bring it into the fold to create Ontario’s second largest electricity distribution company with nearly one million customers.

The merged energy company expects to realize significant “synergies” resulting in projected savings for local residential customers on distribution charges of between $40 and $50, averaged out over 25 years, according to PowerStream officials.

Local businesses and institutions, including the City of Vaughan, are also expected to save thousands on their hydro bills.

For example, the average industrial customer is projected to save about $26,000 annually on the distribution portion of their hydro bill.

Whether or not customers’ overall hydro bill will go down depends on what happens with electricity rates, set by the Ontario Energy Board, but lower distribution charges would help off-

set any rate increase.

The acquisition of Hydro One Brampton is projected to cost Vaughan, through its holding company Vaughan Holdings Inc., as much as $61.6 million - $56 million for the purchase and up to $5.6 million in closing costs.

The remaining amount of the purchase deal will be shared amongst the other partners.

To help pay for its portion, Vaughan is considering selling up to 10 per cent of its equity in PowerStream, which could bring in $40 million, according to a city staff report.

A private Vaughan daycare that had been shuttered by ministry officials amid allegations of health and safety violations caught on security video was allowed to re-open Monday.

Cudley Corner Child Care Centre, near Major Mackenzie Drive and Weston Road, was slapped with a Ministry of Education protection order Nov. 13 and had been closed until further notice.

According to the protection order, which had been taped up on the inside of the door at the centre, centre staff were alleged to have “physically restrained infant children … and forced food down the children’s mouths.

The staff member also laid the children down flat … when she fed the children, causing a choking hazard.” The protection order said the alleged incidents

But that order was lifted last Friday by Ontario’s License Appeal Tribunal until a full appeal will be heard in the new year.

“The tribunal is satisfied there is no longer any imminent threat,” said tribunal vice-chair David Flude, in his ruling on behalf of the two-person panel. The daycare has suspended two staff members and has agreed to keep the infant room closed until it meets provincial licensing requirements, he added.

“The tribunal finds that the (daycare owner) will suffer irreparable harm” if the centre remains closed, Flude ruled. Twenty families at the 96-space for-profit centre had already left, he noted.

For a pair of fortunate Toronto women Sunday, it was a lucky case of send in the clown.

Vaughan’s Doo Doo the Clown that is.

The local resident, aka Shane Farberman, was driving home from a charity event with a couple of clown buddies in the backseat (how many clowns can you fit in one car springs to mind) when he came upon a couple of damsels in distress.

Well Doo Doo did not clown around but offered shelter to the women from an unstable, violent man.

He didn’t confront the guy.

“What am I going to do, go out and hit him with a balloon?” he told me.

He’s a clown, not Superman.

“Until I watched the video afterwards, I didn’t realize how terrified I was,” said Doo Doo, who’s been

His act of derring-doo doo has trended worldwide, making him a celebrity round the globe.

After all, “women saved by clown in car” doesn’t exactly happen every day.

As Doo Doo said, “I take a look in the back mirror and I see two well-dressed ladies and two of my clowns in the back and I’m just shaking my head and I’m thinking, I forgot I was in a clown suit.”

York Police take a slice out of suspected cheese bandits A trio of alleged bandits has time to chill out after their cheesy burglary attempt went awry.

The threesome was caught in Vaughan early Wednesday morning when their tractor-trailer loaded with cheese, rolled over in the area of Hwy. 7 and Hwy. 427.

York Regional Police received a call just after 1:10 a.m. Wednesday regarding a tractor-trailer, believed stolen and parked at Hwy. 7 and Vaughan Boulevard.

While officers were heading toward the tractor-trailer, it began to move toward Royal Group Crescent.

Officers made an attempt to stop the truck, but it didn’t stop. Police say they abandoned pursuit, but the tractor-trailer then rolled over at Hwy 7 and Hwy. 427.

The suspects were tracked with the help of the Canine Unit. One was found with the help of the OPP driving in the area of Royal Crest Drive and two were arrested trying to get a taxi

nearby.

The tractor-trailer was reported stolen from Brampton on Tuesday.

Charged with theft over $5,000 and possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000 are Harpreet Singh, 36, of Brampton, Kulvir Bains, 31, of Brampton, and Saurav Kumar, 19, of no fixed address.

The three accused have been held in custody and were to appear in Newmarket court for a bail hearing yesterday.

Masked men target Vaughan cellphone store An employee at a Vaughan cellphone store was tied up by thieves who then ransacked the store over the weekend.

The victim was closing up the store, located near Hwy. 7 and Whitmore Road, when two masked men entered on Saturday at 6 p.m.

Two men gathered cell-

phones from the back of the store and fled through the rear door of store to an awaiting car, which drove east on Trowers Road. The victim was not injured.

The first suspect is described as a black male, 5’9”, 130 pounds with a thin build. He was wearing a black

hoodie, black running shoes and a black scarf covering his face. The second suspect is described as a black male.

A Touch of Love and Hope, founded by local realtors Geraldine and John Di Marco, held its debut fundraising gala, dubbed SPERANZA, at the Riviera Parque Dinning, Banquet and Convention Centre Nov. 7.

Among the hundreds of attendees at the event, billed as a Celebration of Caribbean and Italian Cultures, were MPP Laura Albanese, honorary gala Patrons Vaughan Deputy Mayor Michael Di Biase, Regional Councillor Gino Rosati and West Woodbridge Councillor Tony Carella.

Guests were treated to performances by Ballet Creole, tenor Anthony Macri and Friends as well as Bing Serrao and the Ramblers who brought the crowd to their feet.

Proceeds of the event, which are still being tallied, will go to support programs that offer life skills to mentally and physically challenged children at the Alpha Centre; projects of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Roseau in the Commonwealth of Dominica as well as heart failure research and training at the Peter Munk Cardiac Centre at Toronto General Hospital and the Mackenzie Health Foundation to help purchase a new state-of-the-art MRI scanner.

York U. engineering school issues honours

aple native Semi Hasaj and Andre Barreto of Woodbridge each received annual Lassonde Scholarships of $20,000 renewable for up to four years to the Lassonde School of Engineering at York University and Sarah Karam of Maple received an annual Lassonde scholarship of $10,000 renewable for up to four years.

According to the issuers of the scholarship it is given to students, “who can demonstrate the traits of a future ‘Renaissance Engineer’– creativity, passion, ingenuity, rational thinking and confidence – in all aspects of their life including academic pursuits, extracurricular activities and their own interests.”

“Eligible candidates must demonstrate: 1) exceptional high academic grades and 2) leadership in high school life and community life, and/or evidence of entrepreneurial talent.”

Hasaj, a second-year space engineering student, who graduated from Maple’s Newtonbrook Secondary School, received the Paul Stanbury Award for leadership in mathematics at his graduation and organized tutoring sessions for fellow students in his local library.

Hasaj said he was excited about receiving the scholarship: “I’ve always been fascinated by the unknown, and

turning what we consider science fiction into reality.

This led me to Lassonde for its specialized Space Engineering program. As a student, all you can hope for is that your school gives you the tools you need to be successful. Lassonde has gone beyond this by investing in our success through these scholarships, and I’m very grateful for it.”

Karam, a second-year electrical engineering student who graduated from St. Elizabeth Catholic High School, has helped to mentor students and build a strong sense of community.

This summer she interned at Bombardier Aerospace with the Wiring group, according to her student profile. In high school, Karam was selected as a peer minister for students in grades 10 to 12.

Karam said she was always interested in creativity and technology and is happy to have earned a scholarship.

“Ever since I was a kid, I was always curious about how things work and was always looking for a challenge. I chose engineering because I want to influence and improve the world through the balance of creativity and technology that engineering offers. I am grateful to be part of the Lassonde School of Engineering as it provides

me with hands-on learning opportunities through the latest technology,” said Karam.

Barreto, a first-year computer science student who graduated from St. Jean de Brebeuf Catholic High School in Woodbridge, has an impressive list of leadership and academic accomplishments. As part of the Shad Cup at Queen’s University, Barreto developed an app that encourages Canadians to get outdoors, according to his student profile. In addition to this, he has amassed a roster of prizes, including Ontario Scholar, Honour Roll and Business Organization Studies Award.

Barreto, like Karam and Hasaj, is thrilled with his scholarship.

“Being part of Lassonde at York has opened a multitude of doors for me. The Lassonde scholarship provided me with the financial security I was lacking, and also gave me the opportunity to take more risks and fully experience all York has to offer. Through the scholarship I have met with fellow scholars who share my drive and ambition, and are innovators who love to share advice and ideas.”

Shane Farberman, aka Doo Doo the Clown Farberman turned a corner and saw a man jumping on cars in the Front and Portland streets area and called 911.

When the man ran down to Bathurst Street, Farberman followed in his car.

Then, he saw the man try to punch women walking in the opposite direction on the street.

The women began to walk a bit faster. The man began chasing them.

Farberman was still in full

clown makeup and costume.

He rolled down his windows and yelled for the women to get into his car.

While looking astonished, the women ended up diving into Farberman’s car, squeezing in with the two other clowns in the back seat.

Then, the man turned his attention to Farberman’s own car.

“He was pounding and he was smashing and he was looking at them with death in his eyes, he was absolutely — and I’ve never experienced that, I’m a happy guy,” Farberman said. “What am I going to do, go out and hit him with a balloon? It was pretty terrifying.”

The police arrived and subdued him.

He received a celebratory scroll at Toronto city hall, among other acclamations.

Farberman said he doesn’t consider his actions particularly heroic.

“I’m very humbled. I believe that people should look out for people,” he said.

Firearms, drugs seized during raids in Toronto, Vaughan Toronto police arrested nine people and seized a number of firearms and drugs after the Gun and Gang Task Force raided locations in Toronto and Vaughan on Thursday, Nov. 19.

Peters’ absence led to encore performances by Dani and Spadone, who had the audience in stitches all night with bits about growing up in Downsview, his three sisters’ excessive use of hairspray and his wife’s efforts to control him.

It was all to raise funds for Alesandro, the seven-year-old who has a form of cerebral palsy called spastic diplegia and requires a walker to get around.

Proceeds from the event, which also featured a silent auction, went toward the $150,000 the Ciampas need to pay for spinal surgery in the United States, as well as post-operative rehabilitation costs, that will likely enable Alesandro to walk unassisted and, ultimately, lead a more independent life.

Prior to Friday night, $120,000 had been raised through numerous community events including a gala at the end of October that brought in more than $50,000.

Before the show got under way, Alesandro said he was both “excited” and “nervous” about having such a talented group of performers doing a show to support him.

His dad, Claudio Ciampa, felt the same way.

“This is great,” he said looking out over the crowd. “I’m so excited.”

At the end of the night, Caria told the audience that thanks to the generosity of hundreds of people who’ve supported the Ciampas at their numerous fundraisers, as well as through their crowd-funding page, www.gofundme.com, the $150,000 goal has been surpassed and Alessandro will undergo surgery Dec. 1.

The Ciampas were forced to raise money for the cost of the operation after they were denied OHIP coverage because they couldn’t find a qualified neurosurgeon in Ontario who would agree to assess Alesandro and recommend the surgery for him.

The doctor in the United States who performs the surgery, known as selective dorsal rhizoctonia (SDR), had

assessed Alesandro and concluded he’s a prime candidate.

In order to help other families facing the same plight, the Ciampas have vowed to continue pressuring the province to fund SDR surgery for kids who would benefit from it.

Earlier this month, they went before an OHIP appeal board to plead their case to have Alesandro’s surgery covered. Shana says if they lose the appeal, she’s willing to take the matter to court.

Peters got involved after Shana took to Twitter to share videos of Alesandro doing impersonations of the superstar comedian, who grew up in Brampton but now lives in Los Angeles.

He got in touch with her and arranged to come here to meet Alesandro, Shana said.

After they met, Peters offered to perform at the comedy night fundraiser provided it was kept secret until the night of the show.

“It’s overwhelming (having Peters’ support), but you know what the whole community has been just amazing,” Shana said before the show started.

Row upon row of cars, trucks and people paid tribute to a man described as a man’s man, with one of the biggest and kindest of hearts, who made friends just as easily as he made people laugh.

He was also fondly remembered as reliable, honest and as someone who could always be counted on.

Admired by his colleagues as one of the smartest and most mechanically inclined individuals, it was Gordon’s ability to make friends — and penchant for snoring — that brings the largest smiles.

“Those friends are definitely missing you for now and forever,” wrote Matthew Robert in a Facebook tribute.

A GoFundMe account set up to support the Gordon family had raised more than $1,400 by noon Wednesday.

York Region councillors approved changing the EMS name at a recent committee meeting. The switch was endorsed by council on Nov. 19.

It will cost about $50,000 over five years to replace signs at stations and $1,000 to change stickers on automated external defibrillators.

However, the region will minimize most of the costs by phasing in the name change over time.

For example, every year, the region updates the

graphics on 20 per cent of its fleet.

Vehicle decals with the new name will be phased in over five years, meaning there will be no additional cost.

If the decals were changed immediately, it would have cost $100 a vehicle for a total cost of $9,500.

New uniforms will also be phased in over time, resulting in no additional cost.

Station flags are replaced twice a year, so there will be no additional cost to change them with new ones.

All other regions in the Greater Toronto Area, as well as a majority of communities elsewhere in the province, have already switched from EMS to para-

medic services, a report to the committee said.

“The renaming of emergency medical services to paramedic services is uniquely prominent across Ontario in order to more accurately reflect the work paramedics perform,” the report said.

“The use of paramedic services distinguishes paramedics from other service providers such as fire services, many of which have adopted fire and emergency services.”

To date, 27 former EMS services in Ontario, or 54 per cent, have changed their names, including Toronto, Durham, Peel, Halton, Simcoe, Waterloo, Hamilton and Ottawa.

Regional council started its budget discussions last Thursday and could adopt the fiscal document as early as Dec. 17.

If the budget is approved as now proposed, the regional portion of the property tax bill would go up by $34 on the average house in Georgina.

In East Gwillmbury, it would increase by $54.

The average Newmarket household would see its regional taxes climb by $50.

Aurora’s average increase would be $62, just slightly above the average $61 in Whitchurch-Stouffville.

In Markham, the average increase would be $64.

The average households in Richmond Hill and Vaughan would see their regional taxes boosted by $69.

King Township would have the highest increase,

with the average household paying an additional $76.

Last year, regional council adopted a four-year budget plan, which saw regional taxes increase by 2.97 per cent in 2015 with projections of 2.85 per cent in 2016, 2.69 per cent in 2017 and 2.35 per cent in 2018.

CITIZENConnection With a 2.85 per cent increase to the regional portion of the tax bill, the average homeowner in the City of Vaughan would pay an additional $69 per year.

If approved, the 2016 budget would include $2 billion in operating expenses, up from $1.9 billion this year.

The capital budget would drop to $783 million in 2016, down from $826 in 2015.

The region plans to spend $6.1 billion on capital projects over the next 10

years, the largest amount among surrounding 905 regions.

Halton Region’s 10-year capital plan calls for spending $3.2 billion, while Peel Region will invest $5.8 billion and Durham Region will spend $3.8 billion.

The single largest investment in York would be on transportation projects, which would get 44 per cent of the funding, while 37 per cent would go toward water and wastewater projects and 19 per cent would be spent on other initiatives.

Over the next three years, the region plans to hire 49 new police officers and 17 civilians, hire 52 paramedics and build or rehabilitate paramedic response stations, add 52 new lane kilometres of roads, open two transitional/emergency housing facilities and invest more in water and wastewater infrastructure and vivaNext bus rapid transit services on new rapidways.

Our tears are that river, a gift that many of us tend to avoid or deem weak, yet will almost always lead us to that opening we seek.

And if darkness falls, we may need to just rest for a while and find our bearings in the stars, listening for that place in our hearts that knows the sun will be rising again very soon.

Eventually, with acute awareness, determination, and maybe even a little help from God, we will find our way out of that wilderness and be back to that wonderful place we call home.

Every year we hear about the countless stories of people who have been lost in the woods.

Whether they were not paying attention or simply lost their bearing, what started out as a simple stroll into the beauty of nature, quickly turned into a potential tragedy. Although I haven’t experienced this myself, I would imagine it is very terrifying.

There’s also information about the significant cultural and natural heritage features of the site they’re visiting.

Those interested in using it simply have to grab their smartphone or tablet, download a QR code reader then find QR coded trees or features and scan away.

Trail users in Vaughan can expect to find about 28 tagged trees along the route.

Health fair offers hope to COPD sufferers

Civic Centre Resource Library Vaughan Public Libraries (VPL) is excited to announce that it will open its ninth branch, the Civic Centre Resource Library in spring 2016. Aptly named by the Vaughan Public Library Board in consultation with Vaughan citizens, the new library will be located on the City Hall Campus.

“ When planning the new library we adopted a collaborative design approach by incorporating suggestions from the community gathered from surveys, focus groups and community meetings”, said Devender Sandhu, Chair, Vaughan Public Library Board. “We believe that this will be one of the most beautiful, modern libraries in Ontario, passionately designed to accommodate sustainability principles as well as the changing needs of different demographics which include the elderly, teenagers and young children. The new library responds toVPL’s mission of offering a welcoming destination that educates, excites and empowers theVaughan community.”

Its exterior is spectacular, featuring a transparent façade that continues the theme of transparency and openness of the adjacent City Hall and addresses the scale of both

drivers and pedestrians. Its peaked roofline provides a transition from the heritage landscape of Maple to the official seat of municipal governance.

The interior design, futuristic yet welcoming, will have ample natural lighting and high ceilings. Bright, colourful and inviting with flexible and easily convertible spaces, it features separate areas for children and teens and dedicated spaces for quiet reading, serious studying and collaboration.

There are meaningful actions people can take to improve their respiratory health, at any stage before or after a chronic obstructive pulmonary disorder diagnosis, known as COPD. That was a key message at the Telehomecare World COPD Day Health Fair at Southlake Regional Health Centre Nov. 18.

Themed “It’s not too late,” the day was organized to raise awareness about the disorder and to improve care of this disease around the world.

The event at Southlake’s auditorium was well attended by healthcare professionals, clinicians and community groups, all of whom came together to host an informative, interactive health fair. The goal was to share important information about lung health, spirometry testing and medication-inhaler technique review with chronic obstructive pulmonary disorder educators.

At Southlake, the Ontario Telemedicine Network Telehomecare Program is a virtual healthcare program linking patients with chronic conditions to clinicians who provide easy to use remote monitoring and regular health coaching. Patients become partners in their own care, right in their own homes.

The Telehomecare program co-hosted the event because the hospital’s program is a perfect example of this year’s ‘It’s not too late’ theme, said Rosalyn Gambell, Manager, Out Patient Medicine Services, Telehomecare, Health Links and GEM Nurses.

“The Telehomecare program is tailored to support patients and help them prevent further lung damage by promoting a healthy lifestyle and the teaching of early symptom recognition and management,” she said.

It has become more difficult to deny that global warming has become a most serious problem facing the world in the coming century. It is widely expected that 2015 will eclipse 2014 as the hottest year on record as rising temperatures seem to have little end in site.

With the United Nations convention on climate change being held in Paris at the end of this month, the world is searching for long-term solutions to the this problem.

While world leaders look at large-scale solutions to climate change, there are many small things you can do to cut down on your ecological footprint. The best part is, not only do some of these measures cut down on your carbon usage but, they also end up saving you money.

1. Avoid vampire power Many people don’t realize that when some live electronics are plugged in they are sucking up electricity even when they are not being used. Not only does vampire power cost you money on your electricity bill, it also wastes energy.

Whether it’s your TV, microwave or coffee maker, if there’s a light on even when the machine is turned off, it means the appliance is on standby mode and drawing power.

There is a simple solution. Plug your appliances into power bars and simply turn off the power bar when you’re not using them.

2. Cut down on red meat Forget the health studies about red meat.

ally better for the environment. When you buy something, you should take driving distance into account. According to a Carnegie Mellon University study, e-commerce is a less energy consumptive option than driving to a store 80 per cent of the time. While some people have concerns about excessive packaging, the study said packaging has a relatively low impact because of the growth of recycling.

The Vaughan Rangers Minor Blue Bantam Select team chipped in with $1,000 for b.r.a.i.nchild, a volunteer organization that funds brain tumour research as well as support programs and education at SickKids.

Patti Panzeca and her family have been raising funds for brain tumour research at SickKids hospital since her seven-year-old son Giovanni died from a rare type of brain tumour in 2011.

To date, the Vaughan family is just shy of reaching the $25,000 mark.

Hitting that would lead to a plaque being installed at the hospital in honour of Giovanni, who was diagnosed with diffuse intrinsic pontine glioma (DIPG) on Father’s Day in 2010 and passed away nearly nine months later.

They got a lot closer to reaching that goal thanks, in part, to the support of a local hockey team.

Last month, the Vaughan Rangers Minor Blue Bantam Select Team presented Panzeca with a $1,000, which will go to b.r.a.i.n.child, a volunteer organization that funds brain tumour research as well as support programs and education at SickKids.

“It meant a lot to us for them to remember us,” Panzeca said. “I went to speak to the boys after their practice. ... It was very touching.”

The Rangers’ donation put the Panzecas within about $1,000 of their fundraising goal.

Then, on Oct. 24, the HomeLife/Metropark Realty Inc. held its 18th annual Pumpkin Fest and made a donation to support brain tumour research at SickKids in honour of Giovanni, Panzeca said.

Now, the family only needs to raise about $500 more to hit their target.

They would likely have surpassed the $25,000 mark by now, Panzeca said, but the family supports Meagan’s Walk every year.

The annual event, named after 5-year-old Meagan Bebenek who died of the same type of tumour as Giovanni, also raises money for pediatric brain tumour research at SickKids.

Holly’s young life ended far too soon

arol McGruthers is testament to a mother’s boundless love for a child. Her late daughter, Holly, was a monument to perseverance.

Challenged from birth by the rigours of arteriovenous malformation, known as AVM, Holly passed away Aug. 4, 2005, 12:20 p.m.

Carol’s reminiscence of her daughter’s 33 years of life is as precise as it is poignant.

On the 10th anniversary of Holly’s death, Carol still grieves. Time hasn’t healed the wounds. Her pain is palpable, the tears unbridled. The melancholy milestone is an opportunity to pay tribute to a remarkable child, Carol said.

It is also a welcome occasion to publically acknowledge the many people who heartened, encouraged and inspirited Holly along her difficult way.

Holly’s 43rd birthday would have been Nov. 30. Carol harkens back to that date in 1972, 12:17 p.m.

“Right away, we knew something was very wrong,” she said haltingly. Doctors diagnosed the girl with AVM, a tangle of abnormal blood vessels connecting arteries and veins. It can develop randomly in the body. In Holly’s case it was in the neck and head, causing aneurisms.

Before age six, Holly had seen 25 specialists and endured many procedures. The illness limited her sight and hearing.

“Holly was a quiet, loving and sharing person of faith,” Carol said. “Most doctors didn’t think she’d live to age five. Her faith was really strong.”

Carol credits her family’s support and that of a network of professionals, friends, neighbours and even strangers for helping Holly at every fragile stage.

“Nurses, doctors, physicians’ wives and secretaries did special things for her,” she said. “They would invite Holly to the hospital for a gift from Santa Claus. Firefighters and paramedics came to save Holly’s life several times.”

Newmarket-born Carol and her family, including husband Percy and son Tim, settled in River Drive Park near Holland Landing.

Holly enjoyed the waterfront and parks, exploring on her bike and scooter.

“Everyone knew Holly,” her mother said. “The neighbour kids watched out for her, protected her.”

Neighbour Sam Reid, keyboardist for rock band Glass Tiger, dropped by and gifted Holly with the group’s album and autographed photos.

“Holly had a community of extended family and friends who cared for her in many ways,” Carol said. “They are all special people.”

Holly attended Jersey Public School in Keswick and Langstaff High School in Richmond Hill. She delighted in reading and making muffins to share with classmates and teachers. The teen was proud to be in her self-described “differently abled” class.

Carol speaks solemnly about her daughter’s last years, recalling how fellow members of Queensville-Holland Landing United Church reached out with prayers and gifts. She lauds the care Holly received at her Sutton hospice.
