The provincial byelection in Vaughan is heating up rather quickly.

Less than a week into the race, the Tories are alleging that the Liberals are misusing taxpayer-funded resources to support local Grit candidate Steven Del Duca.

Vic Fedeli, Progressive Conservative MPP for Nipissing, filed a complaint Tuesday with Ontario Integrity Commissioner Lynn Morrison regarding a page providing campaign information for Mr. Del Duca that

Voter fed up with politics

A longtime Liberal Party supporter and former contributor has vowed to either reject the Sept. 6 byelection vote altogether or vote NDP, after slamming what he calls increasingly “opportunistic” politicians.

Jagir Samra said he was so disappointed with Greg Sorbara’s decision to quit provincial politics only 10 months after promising to stay the entire term, that he will turn his back on the Liberals, 30 years after he first voted for the party in Pierre Elliot Trudeau’s historic win.

“After voting for Trudeau, I never turned my back on the party and I had very much respect for Mr. Sorbara,” said the father of four. “He was always here for us and doing good things for our city. I not only voted for him, but I contributed to his campaign financially and then only 10 months into his term he just

disappears and here we go again.”

Mr. Samra was responding to an Aug. 8 editorial in the Citizen which criticized Mr. Sorbara for saying that “when you sign a contract in an election, you sign up for four years”.

It was also revealed during Mr. Sorbara’s retirement speech that he had previously asked Premier Dalton McGuinty on three separate occasions to retire from provincial politics, giving further credence to the argument that he knew he may not sit out the entire term he ran for during last year’s election.

“I am starting to see that politicians are all in it for themselves and are very opportunistic,” said the Woodbridge resident. “I don’t think I will be voting in this election. If I were ever to vote, though, it will be for the NDP.” Mr. Samra’s comments were well received by the New Democratic Party can-

didate, Paul Donofrio, who just announced he will be running for a second time in Vaughan after coming third in the 2011 provincial election.

“I think that’s wonderful.

The party certainly is there to help families,” Mr. Donofrio said. “I think Mr. Sorbara should have come clean before the election. At the end of the day, the people of Vaughan need to know if they vote for Steven Del Duca (his Liberal challenger) they will just be getting more Greg Sorbara. Residents will also be getting more scandalplagued politics.”

Although Mr. Donofrio didn’t offer any specifics on his plans to make “Vaughan a better place to live”, he did say one of his planks was to make life more “affordable” for families.

In an emailed statement after the fact, he added: “I would focus on taking HST off hydro and job creation tax credits.”

An investigation is underway after a Yorkshire Terrier was killed by another dog in front of shocked residents at a parkette near Bathurst Street and Steeles Avenue.

Vaughan Animal Services is probing the death of the sevenyear-old canine named Ginge after its owner said he was killed in front of her two-year-old daughter when another dog, thought to be a, English bull terrier, crushed its throat between its jaws.

‘Very upsetting’ She added that although the family are trying to be strong in the face of Ginge’s death, the event was “very upsetting”.

Although some consider English bull terriers as similar to the pitbull, and as such they, too, should be banned as part of the Ontario government’s 2005 outlaw of the animals, But they have yet to be added to the list.

The folks behind the Inspire speaker series have launched a bursary program aimed at helping students in financial need.

The three bursaries, ranging in value from $500 to $1,000, will provide assistance for up to 11 students.

To be eligible, you must be enrolled in a full-time, accredited education program and you must have attended the Inspire 2012 conference held in Vaughan

June 17.

Students attending a Canadian university, college or graduate school are welcome to apply.

The Z103.5 bursary, valued at $500, will be awarded eight students The Canadian Italian Business and Professional Association (CIBPA) bursary, valued at $1000, will be awarded to two students while the Shining Through Centre for Autism bursary, valued at $1000, will be awarded to one student.

The latter is restricted to students currently pursuing or interested in an education in neurology, psychology or behavioural sciences.

Applications are due Aug. 31.

Bursaries will be awarded based primarily on financial need, but other factors may be considered such as extracurricular involvement and leadership.

Crash could be part of Ornge probe

Ontario’s chief coroner’s office will probe about six years of deaths involving transport by Ornge, the province’s embattled air ambulance agency.

And while the exact number of deaths that will be reviewed has not been finalized by the coroner’s office, the death of cube van driver Richard Ribeiro, 28, of Oshawa, in a May 9 crash in Whitchurch-Stouffville does fit the probe’s parameters, Deputy Chief Coroner Dr. Dan Cass said.

The deaths to be consid-

ered span a period from Jan. 1, 2006 to June 30, 2012.

Along with leaving Mr. Ribeiro dead, the crash, which took place at about 6:30 a.m. on Bloomington Road, east of Ninth Line, left a Mack dump truck driver injured.

Ornge said it could not respond to the crash immediately due to a lack of staff, Newmarket-Aurora MPP Frank Klees told the Ontario legislature, quoting a transcript of the emergency call in early May. Ornge has two helicopters at the Toronto Island airport.

At the time of the call, a chopper was unavailable because

one crew was on a call and another was scheduled to start later because it worked beyond its 12-hour shift the previous day, Ornge said at the time.

To comply with federal regulations, a later start time for the crew was required.

The aim of the coroner’s probe will be to learn from the circumstances of the deaths to make recommendations, if appropriate, to ensure the province’s air ambulance system provides the best possible care, the coroner’s office said this morning.

An expert panel will be established to review the deaths.

“We know that Steven will continue to build upon

the progress that Dalton McGuinty and the Ontario Liberals have made in ensuring the safety of our communities and of fire fighters remains a priority,” Mike Doyle, president of the Vaughan Professional Fire Fighters Association, said in a news release issued Wednesday.

The firefighters’ union endorsement comes as no surprise given that the organization threw its support behind Mr. Sorbara in last fall’s general election.

Sometimes, the truth can be quite bitter

I

n our quest to create a rich and rewarding life, we can sometimes forget that the comfort of fulfillment that we seek is almost always preceded by a period of great discomfort.

The solutions we are looking for are usually found in the truths we continue to avoid.

Many years ago, a client of mine expressed to me that she was tired of all the pain in her life and that all she wanted was to have good friends in her life that would never hurt her.

I found this notion perplexing. The truly great friends in my life have all shared insights at one time or another that have hurt me, sometimes quite badly.

Their intention, of course, was not to cause me pain, but simply to illuminate a truth that I was unable to see in that moment.

To my client, it seemed that a good friend is someone who simply consoles her and makes her feel better about herself by suggesting that everything is OK. In other words, she gets to maintain the image that she is still a good person and simply a victim of circumstance.

Although her goal of comfort and support is achieved in the moment of her struggle, does it really serve her in the long run?

French philosopher Denis Diderot once wrote: “We swallow greedily any lie that flatters us, but we sip only little by little a truth we find bitter.”

Truth can indeed be quite bitter, and humble pie is definitely an acquired taste. Yet once we develop a taste for it, there is no dessert more appealing.

Many of us want to believe that we have very little choice about what occurs in our daily lives. We get a strange sense of comfort from the notion that things are simply happening to us and beyond our control.

Over time, however, rather than providing us comfort, it does quite the opposite.

We become less comfortable with this perceived unpredictability of life and our sense of safety diminishes with each passing day.

Understanding that we are always at a point of choice is an important truth to entertain, if we truly want to begin creating a fulfilling experience of life.

But in our moments of pain there are times, as they say, when we can’t see the forest for the trees.

It sometimes takes the courage of a trusted friend to share a perspective that is less than

appealing to us, to help illuminate the truth that will help us create the change we wish to see. They hold us accountable, not responsible, for our own choices.

Yes, there are times when all we require is a strong shoulder to cry on and a safe place to express our pain.

But if we stay there without being accountable, it can actually keep us stuck by unconsciously giving us permission to continue making the same choices that helped cocreate our less-than-desired result.

So, the next time you have a trusted friend say something that stings a little, before rejecting it, try and entertain what they are saying, as it might be the missing piece you’ve been searching for.

For me, a great friend is someone who tells you what you don’t want to hear sometimes so that you can be all you have always known you could.

Whether you’re a thrifty shopper, a stylish hipster or you just want a great deal on some polyester trousers, there is only one place in Vaughan that can help you out.

But now, after almost 31 years as a community hub and the Vaughan Food Bank’s greatest local supporter, the Pennywise Thrift Shop is closing its doors forever.

Unfortunately for the community, it’s not only local residents who are sad to see the shop go, volunteers will also shed a tear at the loss of the Market Lane fixture, a place where thousands of items were exchanged and bought and hundreds of rela-

tionships fostered.

‘It’s a great place, the staff that have worked there had a lot of laughs,” said Helen Poulis, 75, Pennywise’s board of director secretary. “Sometimes people were lonely and come in for a chit chat.

Vaughan just grew so big, it exploded. It’s so very sad it has to go, everyone coming in is so sad, it’s a real shame.”

At Pennywise’s height, it was raising about $40,000 a year for the food bank, which was reliant on the money collected at the shop to ensure its survival.

But with the shop’s loss of its exceptionally low $1,500a-month rent at the plaza and the near total lack of youthful volunteers, the Pennywise business model seems to have fallen by the wayside, according to volunteers.

And although the shop’s staff seem to have accepted Pennywise’s fate, many loyal shoppers in the community have not.

“We cannot lose this ser-

vice,” said one woman who called The Citizen’s offices but declined to leave her name.

“These volunteers mean too much to the community. I’m going to do what I can to find another location for them.”

Pennywise events originally began decades ago with semi-annual sales at Vellore Hall, until they became so popular that volunteers decided a full-time business could benefit the local information centre, which provided residents with details on everything Vaughan-related, from local shopping to the best daycare centres.

However, when the provincial government of the day cut the centre’s funding, the shop was so successful staff decided to simply switch the funding recipient to the food bank.

Soon after that was when the money started flowing in, with the 30-odd volunteers helping to raise about See WOODBRIDGE, page 16.

The evening that is expecting a couple of hundred people, is being billed as a night for women, live music, fundraising, cuisine, along with raffles and prizes.

“This is going to be a great feel good night and it’s a different way to support a cause,” said co-organizer Elvira Caria. “The evening can be a girls or guys night out. We want to pay homage to all the cancer survivors

and pay tribute to those who lost the battle.”

Visitors are also encouraged to bring their Smartphones to engage in the latest Vaughan Mompreneurs and Vaughan Citizen Tweetup, also going on that night.

During the few years $40,000 was raised, extra money was given to a women’s legal clinic, the Wallace House and Vitanova Foundation, an alcohol and drug-abuse recovery clinic.

Although the shop moved out of Market Lane only once, to Pine Grove and Hayhoe Avenue, overall it has remained on Woodbine Ave. to provide shoppers with jeans for $4 or T-shirts for $2.

“It has that small-town appeal to it,” said Peter Wixson, executive director of the Vaughan food bank.

“Everyone enjoyed it, from volunteers to shoppers, and they were supporting the food bank at the same time. I don’t know where people are going to take their stuff now.

Everyone loved it, but especially the seniors. We’re are going to have to make up the money elsewhere.”

But years after the new volunteers dried up, the old guard is getting just that, old.

Many on the board of directors are suffering from health problems that include one with a broken arm and pelvis, another with cataracts and yet another recovering from hip surgery.

“We are not as young as we once were, simple as that,” Ms Poulis

With that in mind, it was finally decided that the shop would close at the end of September.

Staff’s measured plan for an exit

had to be hastily altered when the landowner requested that Pennywise leave a month early so the new tenant, a doctor’s office, could move into the space sooner.

“We’ve just been working like mad to get rid of everything to have the space ready,” added Mr. Wixson.

Now the shop will end trading

on Aug. 25 and will close entirely on the 31st.

No matter what happens next, customers all agree that Pennywise and its volunteers were one-in-amillion.

“It’s an institution in this community,” said Giovanna Tozzi, managing editor at Lo Specchio, a local Italian newspaper. “Many of the people volunteering are older or struggling with health issues themselves, but they remain committed to helping others. This is a real shame and a pity. I am very sorry personally about this, I want them to continue, not only as a customer but also for the future of the food bank.”

Although many neighbouring communities still have secondhand shops, including Richmond Hill, Markham and Bolton, with the closing of Pennywise, Vaughan will become ‘thriftless’.

Until its closing everything in the shop is 50 per cent off.

Ms Poulis said she is willing to entertain new ideas for the future, but added to those hopeful that the shop will survive, “it doesn’t look good”.

Justyn Warner was deprived of a bronze medal at the 2012 Summer Olympics when his 4 x 100 metre Canadian men’s relay team was disqualified for a lane violation.

But the 25-year-old Markham athlete and teammates Gavin Smellie, Oluseyi Smith and Jared Connaughton have been offered a consolation medal.

Not from the 2012 Olympics, but from Elijah Porter.

The Newfoundland boy, 10, was heartbroken after seeing Warner and his teammates denied their chance at the medal podium after Connaughton, who ran the third leg, inadvertently took one step on the lane line in the final turn during Saturday’s final at London’s Olympic Stadium.

In an effort to console the Canadian team, Elijah wrote them a letter, sharing his feelings and said he would give them his Timbits soccer medal as a reward for their efforts on the track.

Warner, who ran the anchor leg for Canada, accepted Porter’s kind words and gesture.

“10-year-old Elijah Porter knows the 4 x 100m team are heros (sic), do you?” Warner said today on his Twitter account.

He also included a link to a photograph of the letter and the medal, adding, “This kid rocks.”

Jamaica won the gold medal, while the United States took the silver and Trinidad and Tobago, which finished fourth, moved up to take the bronze after Canada’s disqualification.

Make your barbecue party cut above rest

And they’re going to be hungry.

For back-yard barbecue hosts, that means sparking up the grill and coming up with a menu to serve between sips and dips on the patio.

For gurus of the grill, the party actually starts well in advance, when the meat is selected at the grocery store or butcher shop.

Certainly budget and party size are considerations, but knowing what to look for at the meat counter is the starting point to the meal experience.

Rule No. 1 for barbecuing meat: Choose quality.

Choose tender. Sinking your teeth into a juicy, mouth-watering slab of meat just isn’t the same if it’s not the good stuff.

Be sure to grill your butcher for an understanding of what certain cuts are all about.

Know certain cuts may be leaner, but that it isn’t always bad to be chewing a bit of fat.

“Steak-wise, any meat with a good marbling is good for the barbecue,” said Lee Glenister of Victoria Square Country Meats, just outside Bradford. “That’s where the juices and flavour are. You are definitely looking for triple-A meat.”

Leading cuts include ribeye, porterhouse, prime rib and top sirloin.

“A lot of our customers ask a lot of questions, but we generally do the better cuts,” Mr. Glenister said. “I think most people know what they’re looking for when they come in.

“We try to be different from the chain stores. Anything marinated goes well all season.”

Suitable sides Suggested meat and side dish matches from Big Doug’s BBQ Catering’s Doug Dunec: • Steak — Grilled vegetables, shrimp or lobster, baked potato.

• Ribs — Baked beans, coleslaw, chicken.

• Sausages (Italian) — Fried onions, green peppers.

• Lamb — Grilled vegetable kabobs, roasted potatoes, salads.

• Chicken breasts — Potato salad, coleslaw, summer salsa, rice.

• Pork ­— Grilled apples, sauteed apples.

• Seafood — Rice with shrimp skewers.

Healthy choices — A nice tossed salad goes with just about everything, Mr. Dunec said.

Grilled vegetables are another inexpensive and delicious side dish that match well with anything. Cut them in half and add a little balsamic vinegar and brown sugar.

Chicken is a healthy meat choice.

White or dark meat, it doesn’t matter.

Choosing the right cut is a balancing act and should be dictated not only by the guest list, but also the host’s skills with the grill.

For novices, barbecue caterer Doug Dunec of Big Doug’s BBQ Catering in Udora suggested leaner meats are easier to work with, due to the lower fat content. He recommends novices work with cuts of meat ranging from

one inch to 1-1/4 inches in thickness.

With bone or boneless is a matter of personal preference. Trial and error is the only path to improvement, he said.

“Experts can blast them on both sides and they usually like them more rare,” Mr. Dunec said. “For novices, it’s probably easier working with lean cuts. You can sear the meat on both sides, then turn down the heat.”

No matter what the skill level, he said, a super hot grill is critical to a successful finished product.

“Don’t be afraid to ask your butcher what to buy based on who is coming over,” Mr. Dunec said.

And don’t be afraid to step outside the traditional lines of taste and go for something different. Since introducing bison burgers last year, the product has become very popular, Mr. Glenister said.

“Bison is our best-selling burger right now,” he said.

Tips from Big Doug • Keep a container of olive oil handy to apply to meats.

It helps seasoning stick to the meat’s surface. Rubbing olive oil on the grill also reduces sticking and tears in meat.

• Pre-clean your grill before placing meats. Instead of a brush, Mr. Dunec suggests a balled up piece of tinfoil to clean the grill.

• Use tongs to turn meat, not a fork. Piercing caused by a fork allows juices and flavour to escape the meat.

A Markham resident is York Region’s first probable human case of West Nile virus this year, the region reported this morning.

Since 2008, there have been two reported human cases of West Nile virus in York Region.

The latest one was reported in the Yonge and John streets area of Thornhill.

So far this year, 20 mosquito pools have tested positive for the virus, which is transmitted to humans through the bite of an infected mosquito.

Symptoms may include fever, muscle weakness, stiff neck, confusion,

severe headache and a sudden sensitivity to light.

In rare cases, the virus can cause serious neurological illness, including encephalitis (inflammation of the brain).

If you experience symptoms, you should seek medical attention.

There is increased West Nile virus activity across the province this summer ,York Region medical officer of health Dr. Karim Kurji said in a media release.

Your best defence is prevention and protection, he said. Cover up and limit outdoor activities during dusk and dawn when mosquitoes are most active.

The 2003 Vaughan Azzurri U9 Boys participated in The Scarborough Rangers Cup July 14 and 15 weekend and they made the club proud. The boys finished the tournament undefeated with a 5-0 record and scored a whopping 42 goals and did not give up a goal. The coaching staff is proud of the determination the boys showed throughout the tournament. Their ball movement and teamwork was sharp and spectators were amazed at their style of play. Congratulations to the boys. The team will travel later this month for a tournament in Ottawa.

The epiphany came to Sara Dimerman while she was counselling one of the couples seeking her marital help.

The wife was describing her resentment over doing most of the household chores, family organizing, social co-ordinating and child rearing.

Then she raised the issue of sex.

Or lack of. The couple hadn’t hit the hay in years.

“Well, of course you haven’t,” Ms Dimerman said.

“How can you be his lover, when you’re too busy being his mother?”

The wife burst out in laughter and later, tears of relief at the recognition of her role. The husband took a little longer to come around, but he soon realized that this dynamic wasn’t doing him any good either.

He wanted his lover back.

And Ms Dimerman, a Thornhill counsellor and parenting expert, realized she’d hit on the crux of the problem for a vast number of marriages in distress.

While media plays up statistics showing men are doing more of the household duties than ever before, most research shows women are still stuck with the lion’s share of the work, even if they work outside their home and this, Ms Dimerman says, breeds resentment — and torpedoes romance.

It was much simpler in the days of the popular TV show Leave it to Beaver, when men and women knew their roles, Ms Dimerman says.

“Times have changed, but roles at home have not.

“What the data tells us is that women are still doing two-thirds of the homemaking, and if you look at the ‘core tasks’, which are unrelenting and non-glamourous, the amount is three-quarters or more.

They’re also doing two-thirds of the child care.”

This may be because women are better at multi-tasking or interrupted-tasking, or men are just driven by different motives. Men may not see what needs doing or be willfully blind, she says.

“If there was a dead dog on the

couch and my husband wanted to watch the football game, he would move the moldering mastiff to one end and sit down at the other.”

While studies show men putting in more hours at their day jobs, women do more work at home.

Because that’s where the husband and wife spend most of their time together, Ms Dimerman says, the imbalance hurts the marriage, creating “a tilt that makes love slide right out of the picture”.

As the wife shoulders the load and struggles to get her husband on board, hubby feels disrespected, bossed around and out of the loop.

Soon, all the fun and passion has slipped away.

“It is the heart of a lot of crises in a lot of marriages today,” she says.

Once men make the connection between domestic tension and trouble in the bedroom, they realize there’s a huge reward in getting their partners back, she says.

Women, too, have work to do.

Sometimes, they have to let go of their role as “gatekeeper” and give up control over household standards because getting the results you want just isn’t worth the price.

The final section of the book provides a guide to negotiate, in a blame-free way, a re-balancing of spousal contributions and a return

Writing the book was a two-year labour of love, Ms Dimerman says.

While she and her co-author, who lives in New Jersey, have only met once, they used e-mail and phone calls to share “edgy, honest and sometimes hilarious conversations” and in the process, helped their own marriages.

Mr. Kearns says he learned how to become a better spouse.

“Every marriage is a work in progress,” he says.

“It can easily slip off course, but people can steer it back if they see the way.”

Ms Dimerman dedicated the book to her mother, Sue Freeman, who passed away while she was writing it.

Parent of two girls, author, and columnist — her parenting columns are regularly featured in The Liberal — Ms Dimerman decided to write a book on the topic in collaboration with fellow author J. M. Kearns.

She and Mr. Kearns will discuss their newly published book, How Can I Be Your Lover When I’m Too Busy Being Your Mother?

The Answer to Becoming Partners Again, at the official launch next weekend at Indigo Yorkdale.

The book is getting national print exposure and she’s doing interviews this week on radio and morning TV shows.

The book looks at the maternal roles women play in a marriage — including caregiver, cleaning lady, schedule keeper and cook — how those roles came to be (tradition, upbringing and gender stereotypes) and provides steps to help couples get back to being equal partners again.

It also explains that statistics, showing modern men and women share household duties, don’t tell the whole story.

Her mother was a huge inspiration, she says, and her marriage with Ms Dimerman’s father a clear example of the lover-mother theme.

“I had seen my mother in the role of mother to my father for their 50 years of marriage.”

Aside from its crippling effects on their relationship, she also saw the devastating effects that losing a wife/mother had on her father and his struggle to “grow up” now that she’s gone.

While many of the anecdotes in the book come from her own 26-year marriage to her husband Joey, Ms Dimerman says she knows now, more than ever, how to grow their partnership so they can always feel like equals.
