Vaughan MPP hangs up hat after decades-long career

Longtime Liberal MPP Greg Sorbara stepped down less than a year after being elected to represent Vaughan at Queen’s Park — and at least one local critic is slamming his decision.

Flanked by wife, Kate, and Premier Dalton McGuinty, the influential, often colourful politician announced his retirement during a Wednesday morning news conference.

During the 40-minute event, Mr. Sorbara spoke about the three reasons he was stepping down, including his desire to spend more time on business interests and with his wife, six children and 12 grandchildren.

Mr. Sorbara also said he would devote more attention to running the Ontario Liberal Fund and overseeing any potential Liberal re-election campaign, noting his decision would ensure Vaughan has an MPP who can focus all of his or her attention to the community. “(Being an MPP) has been the greatest honour of my life,” Mr. Sorbara, 65, said. “I want to thank my constituents for the confidence through all these years.”

“The love Kate and I have for each other, it was through her and the family we have together that I have found what’s truly important

in life,” he added.

Mr. Sorbara easily marched to victory last fall and vowed, at the time, to stick around for the entire term.

Nick Pinto, president of the Vaughan PC Riding Association, said electors should be “completely ticked off” that Mr. Sorbara is leaving office just 10 months after seek-

ing their support.

“It’s typical of this Liberal government. They have not done anything that they said they were going to do — everything has been lies on top of lies,” he said. “If you run for office, unless you’re so sick that you cannot stand up on your own two feet, there should be no reason for you to quit. I don’t think the taxpayers should be footing the bill every time one of these guys or ladies changes their mind.”

Mr. Sorbara responded by saying, in an interview, that byelections are “part of the life of a parliamentary system” and there was little criticism of Tory MPP Elizabeth Witmer’s decision to step down in April.

“In my case, I absolutely wanted to come back to make sure we completed the hospital planning,” he said. “I just could not leave with that kind of abeyance, with the way it was back in October. Now it’s in place and I think we’ve resolved the issues with the Vaughan Health Campus of Care. York Central has transformed itself and is taking on the mission so I think that is in good hands.”

It’s time once again to celebrate all things Italian.

The 24th annual Woodbridge Italian festival runs Saturday, Aug. 4 and Sunday, Aug. 5 at the Ontario Soccer Centre, 7601 Martin Grove Rd. This year’s installment features music from Woobridge’s young, rising stars Bridge 6, Maestro Tony Silvani and the Pino Cea Band, Mario Del Rio and Opera Belcanto, among many others.

Opera fans will want to check out Opera York’s performance of songs from Madame Butterfly, in full costume.

The two-day event also features a host of entertaining acts ranging from circus numbers to dancers in grand costumes to an Elvis tribute artist.

And that’s not all.

There’s the annual Miss Woodbridge Italia pageant, Valley Vista Senior Stars Showcase, Coppa Italia Montecarlo Inn Old Stars Soccer Tournament, martial arts demonstrations, Italian Classic Cars Showcase, an art exhibit and the PowerStream VIP Soccer Challnge featuring City of Vaughan elected representatives versus media and community personalities.

There’s plenty to do for the the little ones, too, with Rainbow Caterpillar and Dynamix offering a children’s area complete with games and activities.

The event runs Saturday from 4 p.m. to midnight and Sunday from 4 p.m. to 11:30 p.m.

Woodbridge Italian fest set to turn up heat

The 1,900 trucks that pass through CP Rail’s main terminal each day are once again on the move after an court put an end to a job action that slowed the depot to a crawl Monday.

The protest began in response to a wage dispute with CP Rail’s subcontractors and led truckers to protest at Vaughan’s intermodal facility.

The injunction was granted late yesterday.

In all, about 80 owner-operators parked their trucks along the side of the road and throughout the centre lane, blocking the main entrance to the Rutherford Road site, near Hwy. 427.

The action caused major disruption as trucks entering or leaving had to wait in long lines that, at one point, were halted due to safety concerns.

The action resulted in one truck being let out every five minutes during much of the protest.

“The dispute between the drivers and the trucking companies was a concern for our railway and we felt it was necessary to take this step to get our terminal back to normal operations,” Ed Greenberg said.

The three companies involved in the dispute are General Cartage, Canada Drayage Inc. and Sim-Tran.

The Vaughan terminal handles most of CP’s intermodal traffic for the Toronto area.

A representative for the protesters said they were protesting a new, three-year contract introduced July 9 that cuts their wages by about 30 per cent.

This comes after their salaries were cut in 2009 by 30 per cent, he added.

Burnt toast leads to region HQ evacuation August started with a bang for some York Region employees.

A fire alarm was triggered on the third floor of the York Region Administrative Building in Newmarket this morning and the employees were evacuated, according to region spokesperson Patrick Casey.

Two York Central Fire Services crew responded to the alarm and staff returned to the building within 12 minutes.

The alarm was triggered by burnt toast.

“We will be meeting with the conservation authority to see if we should be looking at reditching,” he said. “We will also be completing a more comprehensive look at the entire watershed that fits into watercourse. Given the reoccurring problems, are there other problems that might be identified or are feasible in that creek to address the drainage issues long term?”

He added that he does not have any safety concerns in regards to the flooding.

In all, deputy chief Larry Bentley said Vaughan had 23 emergency responses over three and a half hours during Tuesday’s storm, however, half of those were power failures causing alarm system malfunctions.

Vaughan surpassed the entire month of July’s rain totals in just two storm events over the past week as a climatologist warned residents to expect more drought and severe rain incidents with the intensification of climate change.

Geoff Coulson, climatologist for Environment Canada, said overnight on July 25 and 26 the city received about 43.8 millimeters of rain and then got a further 58.8 mm during Tuesday’s four-hour downpour.

He also served as campaign chairperson for the Ontario Liberal Party in 2003 and 2007 and took up the post again for the last election.

Mr. Sorbara stepped down as finance minister in October 2005, following an RCMP raid of the Sorbara Group offices as part of a probe into Royal Group Technologies. He returned to cabinet in May 2006 after being cleared.

Following the 2007 election, Mr. Sorbara stunned his colleagues and political watchers when he asked not to be appointed to cabinet so he could devote more time to his family.

He served as a backbencher for the remainder of his tenure.

Mr. Sorbara said his two proudest achievements as Vaughan’s MPP are far and away securing the Spadina subway extension and helping get government approval for the city’s future hospital.

“Those two things are going to change lives dramatically,” he said.

He said both events almost totaled the 74.4 mm in July or the 74.2 received in June. Combined, they far surpassed those totals.

“Climatologists at Environment Canada did a study showing how climate change could affect Southern Ontario,” he said. “(One of the predicted effects) was long droughts and dry weather punctuated by severe thunderstorms.

One or two (severe rain) events has implications for both urban flooding and farming.”

He explained that built-up and urban regions would suffer from storm-water flooding, while farms would not get the moisture penetration needed for healthy crops, because severe rainstorms cause more runoff water, meaning the moisture often only penetrates surface soil.

Vaughan has been struggling with flooding at the intersection of Bowes and Rivermead roads, which has seen two deluges over the past week, including about four feet of water Tuesday afternoon.

The first resulted in numerous residents having to be rescued from approximately two feet of water and police having to close the intersection for about four and a half hours, until 5:30 p.m. Tuesday.

In response to this ongoing problem, Paul Jankowski, the city’s commissioner of engineering and public works, said he met with a number of concerned parties on Wednesday morning to look at potential solutions.

Mr. McGuinty, meanwhile, recounted a story about how his longtime colleague and close confidant asked him three times if he could retire.

He only said “yes” when Mr. Sorbara said his decision was nonnegotiable, the premier added.

While a date has not been set for the byelections in Vaughan and Kitchener-Waterloo, Mr. McGuinty said they will happen at the same time.

He said the byelections will not take place in the summer, but insisted voters in those communities will be heading to the polls “sooner rather than later.”

Winning both contests would give the Liberals enough seats to gain the majority that eluded the party last fall.

Names of potential contenders for the local seat are already swirling.

Several people are predicting Steven Del Duca, Vaughan Provincial Liberal Riding Association president and director of public affairs at the Carpenters’ District Council of Ontario, will throw his hat in the ring.

When reached by the Citizen, Mr. Del Duca, a longtime friend of Mr. Sorbara and chairperson of his last election bid, would not confirm whether he intends to seek the local Liberal nomination.

“Today, I am really and truly focused on celebrating all of the outstanding achievements that marked Greg’s career,” said Mr. Del Duca, who ran unsuccessfully for the Woodbridge East seat in the 2010 municipal election. “He did an absolutely fantastic job for our community, for our province and for the Ontario Liberal Party.”

Mr. Sorbara had equally glowing things to say about Mr. Del Duca.

$140K raised for experimental cancer treatment A cancer sufferer has managed to raise upwards of $140,000 for a last ditch effort to overcome a rare form of the disease. Throughout part of her teenage years, all of her 20s and much of her 30s, Marci Warhaft-Nadler suffered from anorexia.

After overcoming the disease she decided to help others defeat their own eating disorders.

However, in doing so she quickly realized that the world around her had changed a great deal since her struggles.

In recent years, reality has become much starker for pre-teens and teenage girls and, increasingly, boys, who are becoming ever more conscious of their weight.

Ms Warhaft-Nadler, who often runs body-image workshops called Fit vs Fiction in York Region schools, says children as young as five are now frequently talking to parents and friends about body-image worries.

The number of children under 12 being hospitalized for eating disorders has jumped 112 per cent in the last 12 years.

“One woman wrote me telling me how her six year old told her she thought she looked fat in her nightgown,” said the mother of two.

As disturbing as this may sound, she said that is only the tip of the iceberg.

Two studies show that 25 per cent of girls between six and seven have been on a diet and 81 per cent of 10 year olds have tried to restrict their food intake to lose weight.

Armed with statistics, personal experience and tools to develop healthy lifestyles, Ms Warhaft-Nadler decided to write a book on the subject.

The Body Image Survival Guide for Parents: Helping Toddlers, Tweens and Teens Thrive! is scheduled for release in January 2013.

“It’s sort of a survival guide for parents about body image and how to talk to their children from birth to teens,” said the Richmond Hill resident and body-image consultant. “I wanted to write the kind of book that my mother could have

used when I was hurting myself and she felt helpless.”

The book does not just outline the facts, but also helps adults understand the issues and outlines activities and projects to help overcome root causes.

“The first thing that is important to understand is that we can’t change something that we don’t acknowledge,” the 42 year old said.

“Far too often parents disregard comments such as ‘I feel ugly’, ‘I want to diet’ or ‘I feel fat’, when actually these can be indicators that something is wrong.”

According to Ms Warhaft-Nadler, the book will give parents the understanding needed to grasp and deal with the feelings behind these words.

“I want to empower kids to be who they want to be, not who society tells them they should be,” she said.

Another one of the book’s themes relates to society’s increasing obsession with fat versus skinny, when she believes the focus should be on healthy versus unhealthy.

“Bodies come in all shapes and sizes,” Ms Warhaft-Nadler added.

“We can’t tell how fit someone is by how they look.”

New book helps parents talk to children about body image

A former Vaughan resident has been charged in connection with 12-year-old allegations of sexual assault.

Ronald Rosario De Francesco, 47, was turned over to York Regional Police crimes against children investigators yesterday by Argentinian police, Const. Blair McQuillan said.

He is accused of sexually assaulting an 11-year-old girl, beginning in 2000, according

to police.

An investigation, launched

by York police in 2006, revealed enough information to issue a Canadawide warrant for his arrest, but Mr. De Francesco left Canada and is believed to have landed in Italy, Const. McQuillan said.

Police suspect he then travelled to Argentina, where he was arrested by Argentinian authorities in 2010.

Extradition of Mr. De Francesco to Canada from Argentina was granted this month.

Police would not discuss the relationship, if any, between Mr. De Francesco and the young woman.

More information about this case is expected to be released by York police later today.

The art of tasting should apply to more than what’s on the grill during a back yard barbecue gathering.

Just ask Markham connoisseur Dean Christofilos, who has been in the wine, spirits and beer industry for 23 years, with numerous certificates and training in hospitality and tourism.

“In today’s rule, we drink what we like,” Mr. Christofilos said. “I taste one thing, you may taste something else.”

While there is still the general rule of thumb that white meats and seafood go with white wine and red meats go with red wine, Mr. Christofilos encouraged people to be open-minded when it comes to trying new drinks, especially when invited to a back yard barbecue.

“When it’s free, you should be all over tasting different things,” said the self-proclaimed “seasonal drinker”, who is the GTA representative for Coyote’s Run Estate Winery in St. David’s village in Niagara-on-theLake.

“I enjoy and respect what I drink,” Mr. Christofilos said. “If I want a beer and it’s warm, I’ll put ice cubes in. If you are cracking open a $90 bottle of wine, treat it as such.

It’s about the experience of the moment.”

If you are hosting a back yard barbecue, Mr. Christofilos suggested offering a few whites and a few reds to let your guests mix and match according to their preferences.

“There are no hard and fast rules when it comes to pairing wines with your grilled foods, just generalities that can get you going,” he said. “Ultimately, it is your palate

If you are a guest of a barbecue and are unsure of what to bring, Mr. Christofilos said a safe wine would be unoaked chardonnay.

“You still have the characteristics of buttery, creamy and well-balanced on the tongue, but you don’t have an oak feeling,” he said.

Another safe option is pinot noir, which is a food-friendly pairing wine, Mr. Christofilos said.

“It fits a food chart whether it’s grilled fish or a big, fat meaty burger,” he said.

In addition to wines and beers, always have non-alcoholic options for non-drinkers and to be a responsible host, Mr. Christofilos said.

“Typically, it’s one drink per hour or follow it with water,” he said.

But before you serve your guests, Mr. Christofilos said it’s worth investing time to find out some of the untold stories behind the bottles.

“My happiest days were the days these guys were born, but I don’t wish this on anyone. As a parent, you expect your child to grow, meet someone, go out on their own, have kids. We don’t have that expectation. Our only expectation is the inevitable” Ten years ago, Sean De Pinto, 27, was teaching snowboarding at Uplands Ski Club, today, he struggles to stand and speak, due to an extremely rare and fatal disease.

The De Pintos didn’t know what Tay-Sachs was until Sean began to have trouble, physically keeping up with his friends and complained of burning sensations in his feet.

A series of blood tests in 1999 revealed the family’s “nightmare”.

Their lives changed forever.

Little is known about Tay-Sachs and due to its symptoms, it’s often misdiagnosed as ALS (Lou Gherig’s disease) or multiple sclerosis.

As far as the De Pintos know, there are no more than 400 families worldwide living with Tay-Sachs.

With the disease most prevalent in infants, life expectancy isn’t typically more than five years. Sean and Chris are two of the oldest living people with this disease, their parents say.

With no cure, the outlook is bleak and the boys know it, particularly Sean, a music lover who was once an aspiring mechanic, but hasn’t been able to work on a car in years.

Sitting in his parent’s basement, surrounded by posters of John Lennon, The Beatles and The Who, Sean patiently plays his acoustic guitar at the staggered pace his body will allow.

“Is that OK?” he asks, finishing the final bars to the Gary Moore song, Still Got the Blues.

Mentally, Sean remains sharp as a tack, fully aware of what he’s facing.

He knows, the near certainty is that this rare disease will kill him.

He knows his days are numbered, but he chooses to focus on the positives.

“What choice do I have? You can’t always think about it because you will get depressed,” said Sean, who years ago was on a mechanics scholarship at Centennial College.

“You can’t worry about dying; you just deal with what you have and focus on the good things in life,” added the St. Robert’s Catholic High School graduate, who still likes to enjoy a beer with his childhood friend, Marino Valente, and a weekly poker game with friends.

Chris favours baseball, particularly the Blue Jays, to music.

The family plans to attend a game next month, when the New York Yankees come to town.

But family outings are rare, the boy’s parents explained.

The disease is known as late onset Sandhoff disease, a form of Tay-Sachs, which is a genetic disorder caused by the lack of a particular enzyme in the body, impacting the nervous system.

It’s as if the brain is a pond sending water down the stream that are messages to make the body respond. Tay-Sachs and the lack of enzymes acts like a beaver dam, only letting limited water and limited physical response to get through, explained Sean’s father, Ralph.

Thus the most prevalent symptoms of Tay-Sachs include muscle weakness, which brings a lack of stability, slurred speech, lack of coordination, trouble swallowing, seizures and psychosis.

Hearing and eye sight loss are also common in many cases.

As this is a genetic disorder, Sean’s father and mother Debbie

are Tay-Sachs carriers, albeit unaffected.

There was a 25-per-cent chance Sean would have Tay-Sachs. His younger brother, Chris, 26, is also impacted by the disease and, like his older brother, his health is deteriorating.

Having lived in the same house for more than 25 years, modifications have been made, including an electric stair climber, widened doorways for the boy’s walkers and a mechanical lift from the garage to the main hallway.

It’s travelling outside their home, where hours of planning is needed to accommodate a simple day trip or appropriate hotel for the night.

Calling 80 different hotels in Ottawa, Mrs. De Pinto said plans for a family vacation to the nation’s capital had to be put on hold, due to a lack of roll-in shower stalls.

“I would like to ask (Ontario Lt.-Gov.) David Onley why, in our nation’s capital, we don’t have the amenities to accommodate my boys,” she said.

The De Pintos drive a Honda Civic and with Mr. De Pinto out of work, due to post-polio syndrome, Mrs. De Pinto working as a teacher’s assistant and each boy receiving $800 a month through the Ontario Disability Support Program, they can’t afford to purchase a modified See NEED, page 14.

The government will support the modification of a new vehicle, but not a used one, said Ms De Pinto.

“I can try and describe what it’s like to live like this, but you can’t appreciate it until you experience this,” said Mr. De Pinto.

Because the boys have lived so long and most people with this disease don’t live past 10 years, Mr. De Pinto admits, he’s unsure how much more his sons’ health will deteriorate or how much longer they will live.

Various experimental treatments in gene therapy are in phases of exploration at the Hospital for Sick Children, but a lack of funding of government red tape, have halted testing to help stabilize the limited enzymes, that the young men have.

Such a stop in research stems from a lack of awareness said the De Pintos. Experimental research in sheep affected with Tay-Sachs continues in the United States.

“I’m not saying that this disease is worse than any other, but everybody knows about cancer, everybody knows about Alzheimer’s, because it affects so many. Few know TaySachs because few have to deal with it,” said Mrs. De Pinto.

That said, the disease is well known in the Jewish community, with research indicating one in 27 Ashkinazi Jews carried the TaySachs gene.

Later research showed a particularly high prevalence was also found in French-Canadians, Cajuns and North Americans of Irish descent.

Mrs. De Pinto is of French and Irish descent, while her husband’s background is Italian.

Tests specifically for the TaySachs gene are regular occurrence in the Jewish community and Mrs. De Pinto believes the testing should become mandatory for everyone.

“Our hope is that awareness grows and research continues with these trial treatments,” said Ms De Pinto. “It might be too late for my boys, but hope for a little more strength and for the future of those born with Tay-Sachs is hope enough, right now,”.

Central Local Health Integration Network hired five new telemedicine nurses to provide you easier access to physician specialists.

The new nurses are stationed in Southlake Regional Health Centre in Newmarket, Markham Stouffville Hospital and the Canadian Mental Health Association —York Region and Toronto branches.

The new hires are part of the expanded care delivery available at more than 68 sites across Central LHIN. Telemedicine is a form of telehealth, with live, two-way videoconferencing at the hospital sites, Markham Stouffville Hospital clinical telemedicine professional practice leader Ann Marie Havery said.

“It saves me four hours and $50 a (trip),” Mr. Charles said of telemedicine. “It’s quite handy for me.”

It’s also easier to talk to his doctors via video, Mr. Charles said, noting it’s less intimidating.

To provide telemedicine access for resident clinical appointments, specialist care and staff education, Southlake has partnered with six Central LHIN long-term care homes: Aurora Resthaven, Bradford Valley, Cedarvale Lodge, Good Samaritan Nursing Home, King City Lodge Nursing Home, River Glen Haven Nursing Home and Southlake Village.

Eight of the 12 long-term care homes in the catchment area of Southlake and Stevenson Memorial Hospital in Alliston are equipped for telemedicine service.

After announcing the decision to dismiss four senior executives last month, Vaughan is already looking ahead by filling to new senior positions.

The city has promoted Tim Simmonds from director of economic development to executive director, supporting the city manager’s office.

Paul Wallis has joined the city as director of internal audit.

An executive search firm was used for the positions.

Both roles were created as a result of the corporate structure review approved by council last November.

“As a growing municipality, we are focused on responding to and managing change so our residents can be confident that the City will make the most of future opportunities,” said Mayor Maurizio Bevilacqua.

“These appointments reflect our efforts to have the right people in the right positions, allowing us to deliver on our commitment of service excellence.”

Canadian gymnasts make history by vaulting to fifth LONDON, ENGLAND -- There are many occasions throughout the Olympics where achievements are not rewarded with a medal, but are nevertheless as remarkable.

The Canadian women’s artistic gymnastics team produced such an effort Tuesday at North Greenwich Arena, or the O2 as it’s known here, finishing fifth as a team behind powerhouses the United States, Russia, Romania and China at the London 2012 Games.

The mere fact Canada made it to Tuesday’s final was impressive, as no others, men or women, had done so previously in non-boycotted Olympic history.

But to finish fifth, that was the icing on the cake, said Whitby’s Kristina Vaculik, the de facto leader of the team at age 20.

“I can’t even believe it right now,” she said shortly after the final tallies were in. “Emotions are flying. It’s so hard to believe, well not hard to believe because this is an amazing team, we really believed in one another, and we knew we could improve upon what we had done the first day, but fifth is just incredible, incredible. We are so proud right now.”

And well they should be proud, said Elena Davydova, one of the coaches here in London who has worked with Vaculik at Oshawa’s Gemini Gymnastics for some 15 years now.

In fact, Davydova said the feeling matched that of hers back in 1980, when she won the all-around gold medal competing for the Soviet Union.

“It was like I just won the Olympics one more time,” she said. “For Canada, it was equal to being an Olympic champion. You’ve seen history two times at the same Olympics. We’ve never made finals as a team at Olympics, that was one, and then another one, fifth, the best result ever. That’s amazing.”

It’s all the more amazing considering the fact the team was without one of its stars, Peng Peng Lee, who suffered a knee injury just prior to the national championships.

Then, during Sunday’s qualifying round, Vaculik, the national champion, slipped up a couple of times on the balance beam, costing herself a spot in the all around individual final.

Assaults reported to YRT up Vaughan in good shape: Sorbara

Assaults reported to York Region Transit increased last year.

But the increase — there were 23 reported last year, compared to 13 in 2010 — came on the heels of appeals for more reporting of incidents on the region’s buses and is not reflective of an increasingly dangerous transit system, York Region Transit enforcement and security manager Angelo Apfelbaum said.

Overall, the number of incidents to which York Region Transit enforcement and security responded — which range from assault and damage to property to disputes over fares — rose to 1,952 last year from 1,636 in 2010, according to a report presented to the York Region Police Services Board.

Incidents investigated by YRT have increased every year during the past five years, a York Region Media Group analysis reveals.

The biggest jump was seen between 2009 and 2010, when incidents rose from 974 to 1,636.

Mr. Apfelbaum noted when his unit was formed about five years ago, it began with fewer than 10 staff. It has also taken some time for riders to begin calling transit security for help.

“Now, we’re engrained in transit,” he said. “People call us now. They take great offence to those who would try to abuse our system.”

The transit system is watched over by 36 people, including 21 special constables, four fare inspectors, six dispatchers, two shift supervisors, two enforcement support employees and a transit enforcement and security manager.

Meanwhile, the fare evasion rate on the region’s transit system fell to 1.38 per cent last year from 1.6 per cent in 2010.

“We’re doing fabulous,” Mr. Apfelbaum said.

Not paying a transit fare in York Region can result in a fine of $155.

specific areas known for high fare evasion at certain points during the year, he said.

For example, during the summer months, YRT may experience increased fare evasion near attractions or malls. During the school year, fare evasion may be higher near schools or restaurants, he added.

“We’re being very creative,” he noted.

The YRT special constables have powers similar to those of police officers, in that they can enforce criminal law and other related federal statutes on YRT/Viva and affiliated properties.

They carry pepper foam, an expandable baton and handcuffs, among other tools.

YRT enforcement also works closely with York Regional Police.

frankly,” said Mr. Racco who failed in his bid to become Vaughan’s mayor in 2010. “I finally am doing something different, what I used to do before I entered politics, tax work and management assistance to companies that are trying to grow. ... I haven’t really got thinking about politics, but I appreciate the realities and we will find out later on what may or may not happen. I am pleased to hear there are people interested in me though.”

Regardless of who the Liberal candidate is, Mr. Sorbara is confident his party

can hold on to the local seat.

“The people of Vaughan have always been very, very supportive of our party and our policies and me as the representative. I think that attachment continues,” he said. “Obviously, every election has its own peculiarities, but I think we’re in very good shape here and I’m determined that we’re going to win this. I’ll be actively campaigning both here and in Kitchener-Waterloo.”

Vaughan car crash victim in coma

Occurrences investigated by York Region Transit enforcement:

A 23-year-old woman involved in a latenight, two-vehicle car crash in Vaughan last week is in a coma, but is expected to survive, police said.

York Regional Police Const. Mark Walton, of the reconstruction unit, said the university student also suffers from a broken hip and collar bone and a collapsed lung and remains in Sunnybrook Hospital in Toronto.

Const. Walton said the woman was a passenger in an Acura 3.5 with a male driver when it attempted to make a left turn and

collided with a BMW 335i at Hwy. 7 and Centre Street, near North Rivermede Road, last Thursday at about 11 p.m..

He added that the woman lives just south of Steeles Avenue.

Both the male drivers escaped with nonlife-threatening injuries.

Although Const. Walton said no charges have yet been laid, he added that he does expect charges to follow.

Public misconceptions and cultural and religious barriers are largely to blame for York Region communities ranking poorly in Ontario organ donation registration rates, advocates said.

Trillium Gift of Life, a provincial agency championing organ and tissue donation, lists 179 provincial communities by total number of health card holders and the percentage of registered donors. With 2.5 million of Ontario’s 11.5 million card holders registered, the provincial average is 22 per cent.

Fourteen communities within York’s nine municipalities are monitored.

The good news is seven of our northern communities have registered donor rates from 22 to 31 per cent.

The disappointing rates are in the region’s south, where seven communities occupy the last positions on the list.

While encouraged with East Gwillimbury’s 31-per-cent registration rate, Newmarket’s 26 per cent, Keswick’s 25 per cent and Stouffville mirroring the provincial average, York Region Gift of Life Association founder Alyshia Van Veen knows there’s work to do to get donors to sign on the dotted line.

“It takes a while to create awareness and reach people,” she said, noting the organization is ramping up promotional activities with its booth at York fairs and festivals and a presentation to regional council in October.

The woes can be traced, in part, to some people’s faulty belief individuals are automatically registered, she said. Research indicates one in four Ontario Health Card holders believe they are registered.

“They think they are, but aren’t,” Ms Van Veen said. “We encourage people to go to beadonor.ca and check and update their status.”

She was inspired to create the association after her father, Malcolm, suffered a critical brain injury in a 2010 crash. She and family members painfully opted to remove the 49-year-old from life support.

His lungs, kidneys and corneas were transplanted to waiting patients.

One organ donor can save eight lives, Ms Van Veen said.

Thornhill’s Jennifer Irwin, a double organ recipient, attests to the power of registering.

In 2006, at 25, she received a kidney from her brother and, 33 months later, a pancreas from an anonymous donor, a young girl, who had died.

ber of the Canadian Transplant Association, Ontario Division, Ms Irwin attributes the low registration rates in southern York to cultural and religious resistance and obstacles, as many newcomers are concentrated in our southern tier communities.

Some immigrant communities simply aren’t aware of the opportunity to register and others are reluctant because their faith prohibits or forbids the practice.

The solution is education, she said. Accordingly, Gift of Life publishes and distributes information in numerous languages and speaks to community groups.

Testimonials, such as those from Ms Irwin, go a long way to convince people that modern medicine is the

stuff of miracles.

The generosity of family and strangers gave her “a second chance at life,” she said. “I had diabetes since age five and had to go through dialysis and didn’t react well. Since 2009, I’m experiencing a new quality of life. I have more freedom now than I’ve ever had.

“It’s a complete turnaround.”

A former Newmarket resident, Ms. Irwin attributes much of the organ donation momentum to Progressive Conservative AuroraNewmarket MPP Frank Klees, who introduced his organ donation bill in Queen’s Park. The MPP, who emphasized the need for increased awareness at the York Region Gift of Life launch earlier this year, was unavailable for comment.

Ms Irwin said 80 per cent of the population is willing to donate, but only one-quarter registers. It’s important, too, for family to be aware of your intentions, since it’s next of registrants’ kin that makes the final decision.

“Talk to someone who’s been through it,” she advised. “It doesn’t hit home until you’ve met someone who’s life has been saved by an organization donation.”

Ms Van Veen and her volunteers continue to do community outreach and awareness. Her goal, she said, is to have a 50-per-cent registration rate in York Region.
