EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR’S MESSAGE

I

am pleased to report that the Virginia Air & Space Center completed its 15th consecutive fiscal year in the black and its 11th consecutive year with total admissions in excess of 400,000. These remarkable achievements occurred during a challenging year affected by a decline in tourism and reductions in operating support due to the troubled economy. The Center met these challenges through concerted efforts to manage operating costs and offer unique educational experiences for our visitors. The Center provided education programming for 240,407 students during the year. New education programs were developed emphasizing global climate change and NASA’s role in data collection and analysis, the engineering challenges of the Hubble repair mission and the science revealed in the Hubble images. The Center hosted three educational, interactive traveling exhibits during the year: Risk!, Alien Earths and Animal Grossology, and updated its permanent space gallery, Space Quest: Exploring the Moon, Mars and Beyond, with the installation of a variety of interactive space exhibits. The City of Hampton provided crucial support by funding a major building improvement project to replace the Center’s gull-shaped roof with a new Bemo roofing system. Realizing the importance of conservation and recycling in their personal lives inspired the Center’s staff to extend pollution prevention to their “museum home.” As a science center, we feel it is our social responsibility to minimize our environmental impact by preventing pollution and to help educate the public on how we can all make a difference in reducing our carbon footprint. In addition to expanding our recycling program from paper, plastic, glass and aluminum to include pollutants such as fluorescent light bulbs, electronic equipment and batteries, the staff endeavor to use a wide variety of recycled and recyclable materials in operations and education programming. To further our commitment to recycling, reducing solid waste, using water efficiently and conserving energy, the Center qualified this year with the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality to be recognized as an official Virginia Green Attraction. Included in our efforts to “go green” and to save on printing and postage expenses is this first-ever, on-line Annual Report. Throughout the year, the museum was able to give back to the community in several ways. The Center hosted free admission opportunities for the community including Neighborhood Appreciation Days for residents of Hampton, Newport News, York County, Poquoson, Williamsburg and James City County, FREEdom Days for military personnel, and NASA Days for NASA employees and contractors. Through the Center’s Opportunity Program supported by private donations, free educational programs were provided to over 25,000 underprivileged students from across Hampton Roads. The enthusiastic support of our Board of Directors, members and community partners was crucial to the Center’s success during fiscal year 2010. The continued support of these friends, combined with the energy, loyalty and determination of our staff and volunteers, has enabled the Center to flourish and fulfill its educational mission –

to educate, entertain and inspire explorers of all ages.

EDUCATION

E

ducation continued to be a priority as we partnered with NASA to provide dynamic, educational programming designed to meet Virginia’s Standards of Learning Guidelines for grades pre-k through 12. During FY10, more than 240,407 students enjoyed educational experiences at the Center, from one-hour programs to engaging, educational IMAX films. For those who couldn’t travel to the Center, our Science on the Move outreach program went to them, providing more than 26,000 students with hands-on, NASAinspired, educational programming at their schools. Programming for homeschool families has become increasingly important in the last few years, and in FY10 educators made every effort to fulfill these visitors’ needs. In addition to a Homeschool Appreciation Day, the Center collaborated with NASA Langley Research Center to host home school families at Homeschool Hubble Day, providing hands-on activities through science demonstrations and one-on-one interaction with NASA researchers. Staff also conducted two 15-week programs on robotics specifically for homeschool students, offered two homeschool workshops and held a homeschool science fair.

FY10 Education Grants:

NASA Educator Resource Center

• Contracts with Hampton City Schools, Newport News Public Schools, Nansemond Suffolk Academy, and Yorktown Elementary • The Center also received a $60,000 grant from the VuBay Foundation to support the Opportunity Program and education programs for Hampton City Schools.

Our Out-of-this-World Science camps remained popular with more than 4,000 scouts, students and home school families participating in various day and overnight science camps. New in 2010, the Center partnered with the VA Museum of Natural History to present Rock-it Science, an overnight camp, to Martinsville-Henry County Area students. Students weren’t the only ones being served by our educational programming. The Center provided a variety of educational resources for teachers including an educator open house and several teacher workshops ranging in themes from rockets to the Earth-Sun relationship. The NASA Educator Resource Center continued to be a great resource serving nearly 9,000 people through ERC programming, including a lunar sample presentation enabling visitors to touch a piece of the moon.

Summer Science Camps

IMAThe Virginia Air & Space Center Opportunity Program, Inc.

The Opportunity Program’s goal is to serve disadvantaged students, students of low income families, and mentally and physically challenged children with educational programs at a reduced price or for free. In FY10, more than 25,000 underprivileged students were served with educational programs. More than 8,000 of these were served through donations that qualified for Neighborhood Assistance Program (NAP) Tax Credits. The Center is the only museum in the state that qualifies for these tax credits. Community partners like Wachovia Foundation, Northrop Grumman Newport News, VuBay Foundation and Old Point National Bank contributed to the program’s success.

e continued to engage new audiences with traveling exhibits that were both entertaining and educational. Risk! examined the science behind risk taking with interactives challenging guests to walk across a construction beam 17 stories high or lie on a bed of nails. Alien Earths explored life on other planets where guests could search for extra-solar planets and listen to sounds from outer space. Visitors were slimed, got the scoop on poop, and buddied up to blood suckers with Animal Grossology, a hands-on exhibit that showed us how science can be pretty disgusting!

Apollo XI & XII - 40th Anniversaries

O

ver 40 years ago, millions of people watched as Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin took man’s first steps upon the lunar surface on July 20, 1969. The Virginia Air & Space Center celebrated this historic event during the months of July and November by showcasing our most treasured artifact, the Apollo XII Command Module. On November 19, 1969, our Apollo XII was the second spacecraft to successfully land astronauts on the moon. The Virginia Air & Space Center celebrated the 40th Anniversary of Apollo XI with special activities for space enthusiasts of all ages. The celebration included the Apollo themed, live science demonstration Moon Bound, where visitors could hold a piece of the moon in their hands. Visitors also had an opportunity to try on a spacesuit to explore how astronauts work in space. Guests were able to relive the very early days of America’s space program by coming face-to-face with the actual Apollo XII Command Module and seeing firsthand a moon rock brought back from the Apollo XVII mission. The Lunar Excursion Modular Simulator, the actual moon landing trainer used by the first astronauts at NASA Langley, was also a highlight of the Apollo displays. Additionally, visitors could test their skills at landing on the moon with the Apollo Lunar Landing Simulator.

In IMAX, MAGNIFICENT DESOLATION: WALKING ON THE MOON 3D transported visitors to the surface of the moon to walk alongside the extraordinary Apollo astronauts who have stepped upon its surface. With unique photographs, CGI renditions of the lunar landscape and previously un-released NASA footage, visitors witnessed the life-changing experiences of these astronauts while on the lunar surface.

Did you Know? The Apollo XII... • Was launched on November 14, 1969 • Crew members: Pete Conrad, Alan Bean & Richard Gordon • Was the second spacecraft to land on the moon • Weighed 13,500 pounds at launch • Crew walked on the moon on Nov. 19, 1969 • Traveled over 960,000 miles on its lunar mission • Orbited the moon 31 times in 61.6 hours • Returned to Earth on Nov. 24, 1969
