FORMS OF KINSHIP WITH WOOD April. ‘22 | Location - Ghana G2 Studio M.Arch - Advanced Placement | Ohio State University Team : Matthew Johnson Instructor : Andrew Cruz, Sandhya Kochar

The studio aimed at understanding non-human entities as kins or friends or equals. Wood industry being native to this region of Ghana became that entity for our project.

There is no hierarchy in kinship. Hence, we rejected an anthropocentric understanding of the project and chose to view the project as an exploration of joints - a technique that gets humans and wood together.

Scale itself was put into question. The massing of the building, the components that composed the mass into space and the parts of these components were explored as joints.

The program of harvesting, processing and growing wood dictated the slicing of mass, the surface treatment, the depth of the seams, etc for the project.

The aim of the project was to change the conventional reading of a hotel by altering and misreading the architectural drawings.

Our focus was to create an urban experience in the hotel building that is generally repitative and monotonus.

We strategically performed the operation of mirroring on a conventional hotel plan. The resulting drawing was misread to develop many floors. The resulting building created many unconvential spaces. Some of them required an invention of new program and type of hotel rooms which encouraged diversity. One could see or move across spaces which altered the notions of privacy forcing people to accept the diversity of inhabiting population.

STORIES AS SPACE Nov. ‘15 | Location - Lakhpath, India Semester 6 - Semantic Explorations | K.R.V.I.A. , Mumbai University Instructor Vandana Ranjit Singh

The studio proposed a museum of myths in the now abandoned fortified town with a rich architectural heritage and a potential for restoration and tourism. The proposal uses the phenomenon of myths as a tool to conceive spaces. They become objects that are shrouded within a larger mythical object that claims to predate the town and originate from the earthquakes before it’s conception. Their organization and the experience created in the interstitial space reflects the city. Like the myths, the objects are conceived to create a tension between the real and the mystical by re-examining the relationship between the mass, surface, exterior and interior.

April ‘23 | Location - Seoul, South Korea Semester 4| Ohio State University Instructor: Phu Hoang, Halina Steiner

We were challenged to designa 400 x 3000’ bridge across Han river connecting an old neighborhood to a contemporary park. To manifest a reconcilation between the traditional and pop-culture of Seoul to propel it in the future, we looked for ideas that have survived through time. Traditional Munbangdo and k-pop speak of a relationship between a still subject and a mobile viewer i.e. an object and a field. Challenging the natural tendency of the architectural object and the landscape field, we explored them both on the entire spectrum appropriate to the program of a space developing a symbiotic relationship between landscape and architecture.

THE HIVE CO-WORKING SPACE Location - Pune, India | Role - Project Lead Interior Architecture | The Busride Design Studio| Aug ‘18 - Feb ‘20 Principal - Zameer Basrai Collaborators - Piyush Pahuja, Asawari Bhagwat, Jinal Wadgama, Chetana Kothari, Aniket Surve, Avneet W., SNC, Juzer Tinwala.

Designed as an assembly of objects, this 45000 sq.ft. co-working space was to be made in 3 months.

As a project lead, I co-ordinated between all the consultants and site to ensure smooth delivery. Technical expertise, knowledge of the craft of making and organization skills were my strengths that helped us achieve it.

Meetring as play We explored meeting formats that could be formal conversation, while playing fool, in a semi enclosed meeting booth or even on a ferris wheel.

Creating a indoor urban square The social spaces of varied scales are curated across the plan. They have a collection of architecture objects which reference numerous collectively know and some innovative experience as they come together.

Technical Complexity and Aesthetic The layering of services allowed for creation of complex curated spaces where pieces of architecture, furniture, landscape and services had to perfectly align to create a unique experience.

The Co-ordination of Layers In order to be flexible to change, co-working spaces need to have a uniform grid of all the services while not compromising the aesthetics and experience of the space.
