ARSENEAU

Assistant Coach Marc Arseneau was the Varsity Blues 2004 team captain and led the Blues to an unprecedented 13th OUA championship title. That year, he led both the OUA and CIS in points per set and was among the top two in every other statistical category. Individually, Marc was a starter for Team Canada at the 2003 World University Games in South Korea. He was a four-time OUA all-star, a two-time CIS all-Canadian and was named the 2004 Male T-Holder’s athlete of the year. He was invited to the national A team tryouts and participated in an Olympic qualifying event in Japan in 2003.

WA H B I

Assistant Coach Michael Wahbi joined the Varsity Blues in the 2012-13 season after six years with the York Lions coaching staff. In addition to working as an assistant with the men’s volleyball program, he was also involved with York’s volleyball seminar program, both the coaching certificate clinic and the athlete development camp. In addition, Wahbi, a graduate of York University and an NCCP Level 3 Candidate coach, is a health and physical education teacher at Monsignor Percy Johnson Catholic High School in Toronto, where he also serves as the head coach of the boys volleyball program. He was also the Region 5B head coach for the 2010 Ontario Summer Games, winning a bronze medal. Wahbi spent the this past summer (July 2012) as an assistant coach for Team Ontario. The boys travelled to Gatineau and obtained gold at the NTTC’s. He is also currently serving as the head coach for the 14U Pakmen boys team and will be working with this group as they climb up the age categories.

A D R I A N L I G H TOW L E R Strength & Conditioning

Mitchell Woodside joins the Blues coaching staff in 2013-14 fresh off a five-year playing career at U of T.

Adrian Lightowler joined the Varsity Blues staff in 2011 after emigrating to Toronto with his Canadian wife.

As a veteran right side hitter, Woodside ended his career with an OUA all-star nod in 2012-13. The Clyde River, P.E.I., native led the Blues in all offensive statistical categories, ranking seventh in the OUA with 202 kills, eighth with 3.01 kills per set and ninth with 3.53 points per set.

A native of Worcester, U.K., Adrian has worked in a professional sporting environment for the past decade, as a rugby player with Worcester Warriors, Leinster, Greystones and Moseley. While playing for Moseley he was diagnosed with a fractured neck that brought an immediate end to his playing career and led him into a full-time role as head of strength & conditioning with Coventry Rugby.

He was a 2011-12 CIS academic all-Canadian and, in 2013, helped Toronto to their first post-season berth since 2010.

VOLLEYBALL

Adrian’s playing career was highlighted by representing and captaining Ireland a number of times at a youth level, his involvement with current European champions Leinster and winning a league title with Greystones. He has also run strength & conditioning programs for elite junior tennis players, worked in track & field and with England’s strongest man.

The University of Toronto Varsity Blues men’s volleyball team made great strides last season, earning their first post-season berth since the 2009-10 season, and dropped a close four-set OUA quarter-final match to the No. 2 seed Waterloo Warriors. “Last season was very successful for us,” said third-year Varsity Blues head coach John Barrett. “The work that we did during the year completely paid off and the players bought in. It was a watershed moment for our program.” Team co-captains Michael Denton and Jay Tremonti return to lead the squad. A fourthyear setter, Denton (Scarborough, Ont.) led the team and ranked seventh in the OUA with 8.91 assists per set last season. He will look to help integrate fourth-year Ryerson Rams transfer Aleksa Miladinovic into the Blues roster. Miladinovic (Belgrade, Serbia) finished second in the OUA in 2012-13 with 604 assists. Tremonti will be relied on for his leadership and solid play at the net. The Dryden, Ont., native ranked second on the team with 33 blocks last season, behind third-year standout Trevor Grant. Grant enters his third season with the team and looks to build on a spectacular sophomore campaign that saw him rank among the OUA’s best with 42 blocks. Fellow third-year player Nate Virgo, standing at 6-foot-5, will also be looking to crack the starting six at the middle position. Veteran left side hitter Jake Dysselhoff returns for his fourth season with the Blues. The kinesiology major has helped lead the team in the last three seasons, averaging over two kills per set, while also topping the squad in serving aces in the past two seasons. He will lead by example for both Kyle Fick and Dave Merritt as they look for more playing time in 2013-14. Back to lead Toronto’s defensive unit is fourth-year libero Matthew Vares. A Scarborough, Ont., native and commerce major, Vares led the team and ranked eighth in the OUA with two digs per set last season.
