What comes to your mind when someone says urban infrastructure? The modern ideals set forth by the western world after industrialization result in the mass production of monotonous urban infrastructure. This research paper focuses on water infrastructure because the evolution of human societies depends on their complex relationships with water. What are the alternatives to modern water infrastructure in the Indian Subcontinent? The stepwells in arid India and the network of Temple tanks in the south took centuries of close involvement with the landscape and the properties of water. These traditional societies developed highly regional forms of infrastructure to fulfil their needs. They weave into the socio-cultural fabric of the city and to them, water is imbibed with cultural, spiritual and religious values. This research looks at the water network in Patan, in the Kathmandu Valley of Nepal. It reinterprets existing architectural frameworks to uncover multiple layers of engagement with the urban landscape.
