Employee of the Month: Dependability

How long have you been at Variety Care?

I have been at Variety Care for 6 ½ amazing years!

Your team nominated you for many character qualities, including Dependability, Reliability, Gratefulness, and Efficiency. How are you able to always be so positive and why do you feel it important to be positive in the workplace?

Thank you to my sweet and amazing team! Maintaining a positive attitude is easy when you enjoy what you do. Knowing that I have a great team that supports me and encourages me every day is amazing. I do have to admit that I have downfalls like any other person and when I do, I remind myself that I am not alone. God is always with me. No matter how difficult the situation may be, there is always a path to resolution.

What motivates you to give your all at Variety Care?

How does it feel to be the Employee of the Month?

It feels amazing. Thank you for such a lovely surprise.

What do you think is key in your job role and how important do you believe your duties are in our organization?

Patience is very important. When I am training or helping someone, whether a new hire or a current employee, I remind myself to be patient. I was once in their shoes, and I know how frustrating and confusing it can be to learn how to navigate a new EMR system. Thankfully I had Kathy Sholl as my trainer, so I didn’t struggle as much! Haha.

What do you like the most about working at Variety Care?

Maintaining a positive attitude is easy when you enjoy what you do.

Several reasons keep me going. One is seeing my growth within Variety Care. There are so many amazing people here who have shared their success stories. I would like to someday be one of them. Second is my personal growth. I want to be more confident in taking challenges and finding solutions. Third but not least, my family. They are my biggest motivation. I want to be able to provide them with a great life full of happiness.

-Jocelin

What would you like your teammates to know about you?

Oh my...what don’t they know about me? I want my team of ESAs to know that they are amazing, and their hard work is not unnoticed. I appreciate every single one of you.

It feels like home here. I’ve met the most amazing co-workers. Some have become very close friends and others are like family.

Tell me about your family.

My husband and I celebrated our 10th anniversary last month. We met when we were 17. We have 2 wonderful and goofy kids who are 5 and 8. We also have 2 dogs. A white German shepherd named Sky and a small rat terrier by the name of Mr. Oreo.

Lastly, why do you prioritize helping others with training, even when it’s not necessarily your job?

Training is a big part of my job as I am an Epic trainer. I conduct the training for all the users going into our Behavioral and Obstetrical departments at Variety Care. On the days that I am not conducting training, I am at the administrative building troubleshooting any errors and helping users with any Epic-related problems.

The eVisit team (Cecia M, Jenny H, Liliana M, and Jasmin P.) all have been great team players to each other since starting eVisit. They always communicate with each other to make sure their daily tasks get done and patients are taken care of.

Our team has accomplished goals because of our leadership, accountability, and willingness to learn. Patient access specialists have increased their performance each month and eventually exceeded our department goals. I like the saying, "Small steps build momentum and progress" and I think it puts a bit of the PAC-PAS culture into perspective. Our PAS Leads have done a gre at job coaching and encouraging their teams to meet goals. Thank you, PAS Team leads for your dedication and perseverance!

Our Patient Access team, which handles over 45,000 monthly calls, set new records for patient access in January. Achieving this milestone wouldn't be possible without strong leadership. Daily, Rosa Mares, Tania Saucedo Campos, and Jacquelyn Hernandez offer guidance, support, and direction to more than 45 team members under the leadership of Ana Guman. Considering that team members work full-time, part-time, and even from home, effective communication can be challenging. Their commitment and hard work are evident daily, and I truly appreciate their efforts. A heartfelt thank you to the team for this significant achievement.

PAS staff has been reaching their monthly goals and that would not be possible without the dedication, effort, and focus of each PAS, and most definitely the support and leadership of these 3 people who have grown so much professionally and have to learn how to maintain A healthy relationship with our PAS team, Rosaura Mares, Tania Sauceda and Jacquelyne Hernandez are a very dedicated team, that have a passion and respect for what th ey do and motivates the PAS to achieve their goals daily. I feel very proud to be able to come to work every day and know that these 3 magnificent people and every one of the PAS are going to do their best to make sure patients are taken care of and have a great experience.

Variety Care helps patients navigate SoonerSelect enrollment

Beginning April 1, Oklahomans who have Medicaid will pull out a new insurance card at their next Variety Care visit as the state transitions to Managed Care.

Private health insurance companies are now responsible for coordinating Medicaid benefits in Oklahoma (commonly referred to as ‘Managed Care’). Variety Care patients have until March 10 to choose between three private insurance companies (Aetna; Humana; and Oklahoma Complete Health) to coordinate their Medicaid benefits. Dental patients have already enrolled in their plans through two options, either DentaQuest or Liberty Dental.

As the state pivots toward this new health care delivery model, Variety Care has organized inperson events to help patients navigate enrollment in Medicaid and help with selecting Variety Care as their PCP.

“I’m proud of the staff who are working around the clock to ensure our internal processes are tested and ready for April 1,” said Lou Carmichael, president and CEO of Variety Care. “I’m also thankful to our Certified Application Counselors (CACs) and all staff across Variety Care clinics who are working daily to help patients navigate this often-confusing process of enrollment. “Their work ensures the patient’s benefits are approved and uninterrupted, so the patient’s next health care visit is seamless.”

What Variety Care staff need to know:

Current Medicaid patients will have to select one of the three medical plans to continue receiving Medicaid benefits. If they do not select a plan by March 10, the state will select a plan for them.

Variety Care will accept all three plans: Aetna; Humana; and Oklahoma Complete Health

You can encourage current Variety Care patients to select Variety Care as their primary care provider (PCP) when they log onto the portal to select their new health plan. This way they are able to maintain the relationship with their current Variety Care provider.

Variety Care staff CANNOT help patients select a health plan. The patient must select the health plan themselves. Staff cannot give a recommendation nor help patients choose between Aetna; Humana; Oklahoma Complete Health. This is a federal rule (CMS).

“Oklahoma’s move to Managed Care has been underway for years, and Variety Care has been preparing for this transition for some time,” said Carmichael. “We are well positioned to succeed under this new structure.”

Make sure you bookmark our Managed Care Hub on the Intranet here.
