Bold New Design Styles

Inspiration comes in many forms. From legacy movements in art and design, to foreseeing future trends — and even evolving past trends to create something entirely new — the Varaluz mission is to invent captivating styles for the modern age.

Memphis

Memphis is a postmodern style introduced by the celebrated Memphis design collective of Milan-based designers in the early 1980s. Memphis design was also inspired by revived interest in the 1920s Art Deco movement, as well as mid-century Pop Art, both popular in the ’80s, with some ’50s kitsch thrown in for good measure. Challenging the status quo with its fearless mishmash of styles, Memphis design disavowed the prevailing Bauhaus design philosophy that “form follows function,” and provokes emotions with loud, brash, spirited, playful, uninhibited use of bright colors in unorthodox combinations with clashing patterns, use of simple geometric shapes, rounded edges, and even squiggles.

While polarizing, Memphis design found its way into everything from home accessories and lighting, to textiles, furniture, and architecture, in ways that were unexpected, playful, rule-breaking, and full of the idealism that the best designers have to make the world a better place. All perfect qualities for today’s modern designs.

Pop Art

Bold. Colorful. Accessible. Pop Art’s refreshing reintroduction of identifiable imagery, drawn from media and popular culture, was a major shift for the direction of modernism. With roots in other movements that questioned the very definition of “art” itself, Pop Art was birthed in the United Kingdom in the 1950s amidst a postwar socio-political climate where artists turned toward celebrating commonplace objects and elevating the everyday to the level of “fine art.”

Championed by American artists Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein, James Rosenquist and others, Pop Art aimed to blur the boundaries between “high” art and “low” culture. These artists embraced Pop Art with its rejection of traditional historic artistic subject matter in lieu of contemporary society’s ever-present infiltration of mass manufactured products and images that dominated the visual realm. By melding all levels of society and the art world, Pop Art has become one of the most recognizable styles of modern art.

Tamara Day

Designer and host of Magnolia Network’s Bargain Mansions, Tamara Day is a purveyor of the glam and cozy. While respecting the integrity and history of the homes she renovates, she integrates modern design, function, and style into a space – helping create beautiful spaces for today’s busy families. Tamara has been a fan of Varaluz for quite some time and offers the brand for sale in her Prairie Village, Kansas retail showroom Growing Days Home. While filming her show Bargain Mansions, Tamara realized that she could not source the “perfect mirror” for her many projects so if you can’t find perfection, create it! Working with The Varaluz Product Development Team, they quickly identified mirrors and finishes that would be the perfect finishing touch for the perfect bathroom, hallway or bedroom.

Where Dreams Take Flight

A Collaboration with The Smithsonian

For our fearless leader Ron Henderson, a love for science, aeronautics, and anything historical, began early in his career as a former pilot, Air Force Captain, and Boeing Engineer, with a degree in aerospace engineering (essentially rocket science). So, when the opportunity to collaborate with The Smithsonian presented itself, it was a lifelong dream come true. With over 158,000,000 artifacts in their collection to choose from, finding the ideal inspiration for lighting, furniture, mirrors, wall décor and/or accessories collections was a lot easier than, well, rocket science.

Through this collaboration, Varaluz has taken inspiration from the National Air & Space Museum, the National Zoo, and the famed Butterfly Garden Habitat, among others, and the results will make any home soar to new heights. Like the Smithsonian’s mission, Varaluz endeavors to create collections that span the breadth of art and design, from the ancient to the modern-day, from the playful to the practical, while capturing designs that are not only integral to everyday life, but to humanity, in a way that enriches us all.

Daphne

Scribble

Inspired by the imaginations and works of street artists, Scribble takes things a little more Pop art. Sure to grab your attention in any space, Scribble features free-form curves and captures them in a circular framework to allow them to stand out in an ideal combination of art form and function. Scribble takes on an almost stream of consciousness style where there is no beginning or end, but an infinite flow – just like the creativity of the artists that inspired it. This collection is embellished by a silver gold finish applied to the scribbling itself and backed by a light taupe linen shade.

For a look that is out of this world, look no further than Cosmos. The word “cosmos” implies the universe is a vast, complex system, working in unison as a well-ordered whole. Present this concept to a designer and the results are truly illuminating. Cosmos by Varaluz embodies complex elements like real alabaster stone discs on various metal orbits, and harmonizes them in a neatly stacked, overlapping form. Cosmos takes glam rock a little cowboy with a dose of industrial (structural) charm, making it the embodiment of Luxe Industrial style.

Daphne

The Daphne collection forms its style from many cues, or should we say, many Daphnes? Native to Asia, Daphne is a flowering shrub with structured flower bulbs and berries. In Greek mythology, Daphne is the personification of the laurel tree, whose leaves formed garlands like those Apollo wore. Last but not least, Daphne is a fictional character in the classic animated series about a talking Great Dane and his mystery solving pals. You’ll find inspiration from all these Daphnes in fixtures that are the perfect balance of whimsy and sophistication.

In their journeys, the designers at Varaluz have traveled many trails, both figuratively and literally. Now all paths have converged in the Estela collection. The word “estela” is a translation for the word “trail,” and this collection takes its inspiration from many of them. We invite you to wander the cascading paths created by this new collection, where you’re sure to find your own path to enlightenment. For anyone looking for an inspired modern fixtures design, all trails lead to Varaluz. Estela features doubled up recycled wavy steel vanes finished in black with a slight gold edging.

The word Kalani is the Hawaiian word for “of the heavens or sky.” To some, it also has noble connotations meaning “royal one.” For Varaluz, it is the culmination of a very regal collection of metal work styled in the grand traditions of Venetian glass and crystal chandeliers.
