SUMMARY BOUNDARY MARKERS AS A HISTORICAL PHENOMENON AND AS SITES FOR RESEARCH AND PROTECTION Boundary markers are one group of archaeological sites that appear in databases and research as stone structures of variable sizes, comprised of both stone and stone carvings. This is also the case in Pirkanmaa, where according to the Regional Museum’s Siiri information system, there are at the moment known to be 67 historical boundary markers registered as ancient remains and 60 others as cultural heritage sites. The most obvious boundary markers are those of the provinces, the parishes and villages, which presently are mainly protected as permanent ancient remains. The 18th century large-scale maps and their explanation notes form the most important source material for the inventory of the boundary markers. The boundary markers tell us about the history of land use and land ownership, the relationships between local communities, about the history of natural resource use and management, customs and beliefs. They are the material remains of many historical phenomena that are already lost or disappearing. The oldest boundary markers, which use large stones, bridges and stone mounds, are located mainly on access routes, such as roads and paths. These roots and sites date back to the Middle Ages and even to the late Iron Age.
