Learning Winter Navigation

M/S Prima King arrived in Kantvik from Germany and returns to Hamburg via Naantali. The crew included a trainee who recently moved from Rovaniemi to Turku and is interested in seafarer sports.

Can you tell us a little bit about yourself? Where do you go to school and when do you graduate? My name is Samir Singh. I started my sea captain studies at Aboa Mare in 2020 and I aim to graduate in a few years.

How did you decide on seafaring as a career? Were you familiar with the profession? I used to work as a diving instructor, and that is how I got to know what life at sea is like. I drove different sized boats at the time, too.

Have you enjoyed working on the ship? I have enjoyed it immensely, even more than life ashore. When the ship is at sea, life is very peaceful.

What other ships have you worked on? I worked as a trainee on M/S Finnhawk, which operates between Finland, Germany, and Denmark, and also did a traineeship on the sailing ship Helena. We were a crew of eighteen and we sailed from Turku to France, which was a really interesting voyage.

What do you like to do in your free time on board and ashore? When I am on board I like to read and go to the gym and sauna. I also enjoy playing guitar and ukulele. As for my other hobbies, my favourites are golf and photography. I have really nice camera equipment – also for underwater photography.

What do you think about your studies and the industry in general? Have they met your expectations? Working at sea is meaningful. For example, during the pandemic, the importance of shipping as an industry was emphasised in maintaining Finland’s security of supply. The training is top notch and exceeded my expectations.

Where do you see yourself in five years? I will probably work in a sea-related field in a community service role or as a volunteer. I am especially interested in marine research and marine conservation. ☸
