I can’t believe we are halfway through 2022 and the wrong side of the longest day of the year already! What a start to the summer we have had with the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee celebrations marking her 70 years of service to this nation and the Commonwealth.

I must confess the highlight of what I saw on TV was her majesty entertaining Paddington Bear at the Palace. It really put a smile on my face especially when she produced a marmalade sandwich from her handbag. The whole episode was quite delightful.

Something else that made me smile recently occurred when there were a few days of rain - desperately needed for the garden, I hear you gardeners say. On one of the days there was a torrential downpour more akin to hail. Two pigeons hastily flew out from a nearby conifer onto the high electric cable where they often perch. Rather than sheltering from the heavy rain they seemed to be showering, leaning to one side whilst lifting the opposite wing, and then leaning the other way to do the other side. How they didn’t fall off from the force of the rain beating down on them I do not know!

It was comical and every time I think of it makes me smile.

I suspect smiling is good for us generally – it is just a hunch. It certainly makes me feel better. Smiles also seem to be infectious – something that can easily be passed on and may brighten another’s day. There is a lot going on in our world and our nation which might cause us to feel gloomy especially with the rising cost of living. It has been said that “the thing that costs the least and does the most is a pleasant smile”.

So, what has caused you to smile recently?

What has brought you moments of joy? It is good to remember them. If there is a smile in your heart your face is likely to show it.

I hope you have a lovely summer filled with many moments to make you smile.

Dog Collar Diaries Called but not Collared

Beth has asked me to share some reflections as I approach the end of my first year as an ‘ordinand’ (someone who is training to be an ordained Anglican priest in the Church of England).

17 February 2021 was Ash Wednesday. It was also the day of my Bishop’s Advisory Panel, or BAP. This was the final piece of a process that had lasted over three years, during which I had been exploring a calling to ordained ministry. About a month later, I met with the Bishop of Salisbury (via Zoom, of course) who told me that he was putting me forward for training. I was both delighted and daunted!

I opted to train at Sarum College, which is in Cathedral Close in Salisbury. I liked the clear emphasis at Sarum on ‘practical theology’: for me, theology needs to make a difference in people’s everyday lives if it is going to mean anything at all. The training has a large academic element studying theology, as well as practical dimensions.

The third element is back here in the Whitton Parish, where Beth is my ‘training supervisor’. It is a three-year part-time course - so two years to go, after which I will then go on to become a curate.

The training at college mixes distance learning, with modules to work through week-by-week and a weekly tutorial (also via Zoom), with face-to-face residential weekends and a summer school once a year.

This is important for me as I am continuing to work full time while studying. As well as writing academic essays, assessment is also through a range of other tasks. For example, I have recorded a podcast, conducted a pastoral visit and given my first assessed sermon in church. The modules for study have also been varied, including: human identity; Christian doctrine and history; issues in rural ministry; how to make the Bible relevant and accessible today.

Back in the parish, I have also been learning from Beth and benefitting from her considerable experience. I have also formed a ‘local learning group’ who I meet once or twice a module to discuss the issues raised through my study; their perspectives, questions and reflections have been truly invaluable.

It has been challenging, especially as I feel myself getting stretched in new ways. But it is also wonderful. Thank you to everyone for their support as I continue on this journey of formation for ministry.

Marilyn meets... Dennis White I was very fortunate to meet Dennis in his extraordinary home that he shares with Rosalie at 59 High Street.

Dennis is a widely respected and skilled antique clock restorer.

Dennis was born in Burdett Street in 1946: in 1949 the family moved to 59 High Street, where Dennis and his siblings grew up.

Dennis moved to a cottage in Union Street where he lived for 7 years and over time his interest in antiques, particularly old oil lamps grew, as did his business. It was at this time his father passed away and 59 High Street came on the market. Dennis was visiting a friend in Ohio at that time and whilst he was away he found himself thinking of the family home. On his return he bought the property and has lived there ever since.

He reopened the family grocery shop, where he had worked as a young man, as an antique shop called Inglenook Antiques.

Dennis’s father introduced him to a man named Jack Ellis whose speciality was restoring old clocks and, as Dennis’s interest in clocks grew, Jack became his mentor.

He would watch Jack for hours working on a lathe creating parts and in so doing Dennis soon learned the skills needed to set out on his own as a professional clock restorer.

Many years later Jack passed away, but the skills he learned have proved invaluable to Dennis. He told me that when he is working on a piece that is particularly difficult, he feels that Jack is sitting on his shoulder still guiding him. What a lovely story!

Dennis has restored clocks for 50 years now: just imagine the history of the timepieces that have passed through his hands.

His home is filled with beautiful antiques and of course clocks, including many longcase clocks - grandfather clocks to you and me. Longcase clocks are particularly special to Dennis and looking around the house I could see why. Some are housed in beautiful cases, all with their own story to tell. His earliest clocks date back to 1700. Dennis showed me a longcase clock that stands in the corner of his kitchen, it runs for a month on one wind. He pointed out that when it was first wound up it was probably by a gentleman wearing a powdered wig and breeches! The clock was made by George Etherington of London who was a clockmaker in the last quarter of the 17th century. What stories this clock could tell, and here it is in Dennis’s kitchen, loved as much now if not more than it would have been over 300 years ago.

Dennis has around 40 working clocks, 20 of which are longcase: they all date between 1700 and 1830.

In 2005 Paul Martin from ‘Flog It’ visited Dennis and spent the day filming an episode for the BBC. Visiting Dennis and listening to him talking about his clocks and the passion he has for them was a wonderful experience.

As we sat, the ticking from the many clocks could be heard throughout the house, giving a sense of tranquillity and literally stepping back in time, only to be interrupted by the hourly chimes.

Thank you, Dennis, for taking care of these timepieces for future generations to enjoy in the years to come.

Ramsbury Parish Council Vacancy for Parish Clerk

Ramsbury & Axford Parish Council is urgently seeking a Clerk and Responsible Financial Officer to take post by end of July if possible. The job is part time, an annualised ten hours a week. The clerk works in the PC office. PC meetings are on the evening of the third Monday of the month and the clerk is required to attend and minute the meetings.

The Parish Council would like to thank everyone in Ramsbury and Axford who contributed to making the Jubilee weekend such a success, especially Ramsbury British Legion who organised a great Country Fair on June 3rd , Ramsbury Fire Service for putting up bunting and Ramsbury Estates for a wonderful beacon.

In addition, the work includes preparation of agendas, minutes, logging of correspondence and invoices, general administration, preparation of financial reports and annual accounts for audit.

Experience is not essential but good Microsoft Word skills and knowledge of Excel would be needed. Experience of using an accounting package such as QuickBooks or Sage would be an advantage. There will be an overlap with the present clerk to allow for initial on the job training to cover all aspects of the work, and further formal training could be available. Hours can be flexible, remuneration, dependant on skill and experience to be negotiated on Scale LCI SCP18-22.

Phoenix Brass bring the music for the Jubilee The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee weekend was a very busy one for Froxfieldbased Phoenix Brass which performed at a number of engagements across Wiltshire!

Their first engagement during the fourday Jubilee Bank Holiday was at Milton Lilbourne. As part of the event, the highlight was the lighting of the beacon at Martinshell Hill, one of many across the country being lit to acknowledge Queen Elizabeth II’s 70 years on the throne.

More than 400 people attended the event to enjoy each other’s company, a hog roast and refreshments as Phoenix Brass performed a variety of musical pieces to suit the occasion.

Later in the evening the HM LordLieutenant of Wiltshire, Mrs Sarah Rose Troughton, attended the event and addressed the crowds before the Platinum Jubilee Proclamation was made.

The evening concluded with Phoenix Brass performing the “National Anthem” followed by “Sunset”.

On Saturday, Phoenix Brass opened the Froxfield Beer and Music Festival in their home village and rehearsal hall. A varied programme of music delighted the assembled crowds.

The Band played “Fanfare” to dedicate a Lime Tree that the Parish Council had planted on the village green as part of The Queen’s Green Canopy, a unique tree planting initiative created to mark 14 | WHITTON WAYS

Her Majesty’s Platinum Jubilee in 2022 which invites people from across the United Kingdom to “Plant a Tree for the Jubilee”.

The Band ended their programme with the “National Anthem”.

On Sunday morning, Phoenix Brass travelled to St Nicolas’ Church, Chute to a Service to celebrate the Queen’s Jubilee Weekend. The Church held a ‘Big Breakfast’ at 10am followed by their Family Service at 11am at which the Band played hymns and delighted the congregation with other musical pieces before and after the Service.

Travelling on to Marlborough after the Morning Service at Chute, players performed at the Platinum Picnic on Marlborough Common hosted by Marlborough Rotary. As well as live music from Phoenix Brass, members of the public enjoyed a host of activities, games, entertainment, food, and drink.

There was also a meeting point for Ukrainian families and visitors staying in Marlborough and the surrounding area.

Glorious garden party On Sunday 12th June the Friends of Holy Cross held their annual Summer Garden Party in the beautiful grounds of Ramsbury Hill, courtesy of Julia Blunt. The Friends provided the tea, sandwiches and cake and there was plenty of Pimms and wine too.

The weather was glorious and the adults were entertained by the excellent Wood and Steel and the children were entertained by the brilliant Mr Muddle who as well as doing his show made the most wonderful balloon animals for the kids.

It was a typical English village event and there was a really good feeling amongst all who came. We are not quite sure how much was made for the Friends funds but it

should be in excess of £1400. Thank you to everyone who helped and to all those who came. We hope to see you again next year!

If every little girl is a princess then surely every woman can be a queen, at least for one evening! The photo shows a very happy group of WI members wearing the crowns they had just decorated at our June meeting, which fell at the start of the Jubilee weekend. We moved on from making our crowns to enjoying an indoor picnic, complete with glasses of bubbly and strawberries and cream. Several members told us their memories of the 1953 Coronation, including one lady who was training to be a nurse in London and was allowed out for half-an-hour to watch the procession on that magical day exactly 69 years ago. Other people had brought in royal memorabilia, and we were very taken with a knitted queen, complete with hat and handbag, that one of our members had made. It was a great evening, and we all got home in time to see the beacon lit on Springs Hill.

Ramsbury WI is off on tour for its July meeting: on 7 July we are visiting the SS Great Britain at Bristol. This is a special treat as part of our long-delayed Centenary Celebrations. Can everyone who is going please be outside The Bell in good time to leave at 9am. Any queries to Rosalie on 520261.

Our Centenary treats continue with a celebration lunch in Ramsbury Memorial Hall on Thursday 11 August. Most members should know about this, but please speak to Mary or Rosalie if you have any questions.

We were asked a few months ago if we could smarten up the old telephone box (now used as an information point) in Whittonditch Road, as part of the effort to keep Ramsbury looking like a Best Kept Village. We decided to take the opportunity to show our continuing support for the people of Ukraine, so the box is now lined with sunflower material and contains a watering can with more sunflowers... artificial at the moment, but I hope to get some real flowers up there before too long.

Keeping it Real at Ramsbury

Ramsbury’s First Real Ale Festival a huge success!

On Saturday 21st May Ramsbury Brewing and Distilling hosted their first ever Real Ale Festival. The event had been planned meticulously by Hazel and Jordan and was a huge success. Over 600 people came at some point during the day and sampled 28 different ales, 6 ciders and the Ramsbury cocktails!

Food was provided by way of a Ramsbury Estate BBQ, Phoenix Wood Fired Pizza and Henry Farr’s fish and chips.

We were entertained all day firstly by Bob Bowles, then Pulse and finally by Steve 20 | WHITTON WAYS

DeGutis.

The Ramsbury Flyer provided a shuttle service from the Village to the event and back again later.

What a fantastic day! Everyone had a brilliant time and there was a real buzz amongst the crowd. Thank you to everyone who came but a huge thank you to Hazel and her team who organised it and to Alistair and the Estate for hosting it. After the event the Estate very generously made a donation to a Village Charity.

Froxfield War Memorial Hall gets a facelift Many Froxfield residents will have noticed that the brickwork spanning the front entrance of Froxfield War Memorial Hall has been showing signs of decay and crumbling masonry. A number of quotations were obtained from builders in October last year but the Covid pandemic impacted the start of the works until just recently.

It was identified that the ‘flashing’ on the flat roof above the front entrance had come away from the parapet leaving a gap for water penetration. The ingress of water and damp had exacerbated the deterioration to the front masonry.

Work started in early May and has now been completed. I am sure you will agree that this is a great improvement to the front of the Hall. Additional work, including fungal treatment and repainting of the

Hall frontage, proved necessary over and above the initial quotation once the builder commenced work and uncovered the extent of the water ingress.

The cost, totalling £4,869.60, was met from hall funds.

Just a reminder to all readers that the Hall is available for hire at £15 per hour.

It is an ideal venue for family gatherings, community groups etc to use. There are full facilities, a bright large hall space, kitchen, toilets/disabled toilet, level access for disabled users and ample free parking outside.

AXFORD ANGLE - Jubilee Special Didn’t we do well! The whole country came to celebrate the 70 year reign of our Queen with pomp, ceremony, (our Ramsbury) beacons and parties.

Axford was no exception.

We got together in the aptly named – Jubilee Field, thanks to Ramsbury Estates and Duncan getting the grass cut.

Young and old, long time residents and new arrivals including our lovely Ukrainian neighbours; all brought sharing

plates. We barbecued and tried all the delicious treats. Got to know each other better. The children played rounders and the adults joined in too. We sung God Save the Queen after our lovely Bridget Treherne cut the Jubilee Cake!

And a good time was had by all.

Thank you to everyone that came, making it a joyous day.

Jubilee celebration in Chilton Foliat It was a day of celebration in the village of Chilton Foliat when it held its Platinum Jubilee Picnic on Sunday 5th June.

Everyone braved the weather and brought along their picnics, there was music from the McNeill family, Garbanzos vintage ice-cream tricycle, floral displays in the church and performances from Pelham Puppets - the Pelham family has close ties with the village. There were plenty of activities for all the family including Jubilee Cornhole and thanks to generous support from the village hall, the parish council, the village church, and villagers themselves there were Jubilee punch and homemade cakes to toast the Queen. All the children in the village under 15 were given a limited-edition Platinum Jubilee mug, generously sponsored by the Chilton Estate. “It was fabulous to see so many from the village come together and enjoy such a special celebration,” said Ali Payne of the organising committee.

Chilton Foliat Primary School picnic kicks off Platinum Jubilee celebrations Chilton Foliat Primary School kicked off its Platinum Jubilee celebrations with a picnic in the school grounds which raised over £600 for the school.

Hosted by the Friends of Chilton Foliat Primary school, the school and village community took advantage of the glorious weather and enjoyed a fabulous line up of entertainment including live music, face painting, a traditional Punch and Judy show, dancing and craft activities. The cream tea boxes available during the afternoon were particularly popular and were an absolute sell-out.

The grounds of the school were decorated with the children’s handmade bunting and the school and village community started the afternoon with a rousing rendition of the National Anthem, which the school choir had been learning in the run up to the event.

The picnic rounded off a week of Platinum Jubilee activities which saw the children exploring the life and times of Queen Elizabeth II through the lens of duty and service covering her support of charitable organisations and admiration of voluntary service, which helped the children understand the significance of the celebrations.

At the end of the afternoon, headteacher, Mrs Katie Turner, thanked everyone for coming, saying: “Not only have we celebrated the Jubilee in style, we have also united as a whole school and village community to recognise the 70 years of service the Queen has given us and how inspirational that is for all our children. I would like to thank the Friends for hosting such a memorable event, that not only raised vital funds for the school but made some lifelong memories for our families and friends.”

Jubilee fun in Froxfield Froxfield pulled out all the stops with events across three days to mark the Jubilee.

We kicked of with a Great Platinum Jubilee Afternoon Tea on Friday with union jack-decorated trestle tables laden with strawberries and scones.

Many attending brought along tasty tea time treats but the groaning table of goodies was largely finished off by the end of the afternoon.

The Platinum Jubilee Beer Tent did a brisk trade while children enjoyed traditional games organised by Steve Tapper and Lorraine Saville. Many of the parents got into the act as well, with hilarious results!

The Best Crown Competition was won by Helly Ralph of Manor Park who received a musical, rotating commemorative biscuit tin.

All children attending received a special Platinum Jubilee Medal provided by the Parish Council and our own Pelican Morris Side entertained. A hugely-enjoyable afternoon was had by all!

The Big Event on Saturday was the annual Froxfield Beer & Music Festival laid on

by Pat and Barry Adams. This year, it was tied into the Jubilee with a special hog roast serving almost 200 meals. The event was kicked off by the Phoenix Brass Band who rounded off their set with a rousing

rendition of the national anthem. A range of music for all tastes, combined with warm sunshine ensured a great turnout of locals throughout the afternoon — with the beer

tent featuring guest ales from regional craft breweries including Ramsbury and Hop Kettle from Swindon… The Village Idiot from the White Horse Brewery was a popular choice!

The Parish Council dedicated a Lime tree planted to commemorate the Jubilee which it is hoped will grow for many decades to come, if not centuries, as a reminder of this happy occasion.

The weekend rounded off with Hymns & Pimms celebration Sunday service in All Saints Church, led by Rector Beth Hutton where joyful singing was fuelled by tasty Pimms provided by Claire Wilson and Jan Heppenstall. Afterwards, everyone enjoyed some more relaxing refreshment in the churchyard and the rain stayed away just long enough!

Special thanks to to Lynn CaseySturt who only recently moved to Froxfield but got stuck in and sewed yards and yards of wonderful bunting which decorated the marquees for the weekend in high style.

Ramsbury Jubilee celebrations There was bunting in the High Street — thanks to Ramsbury Fire Service for their help — and the Square, and the “Queen” oversaw proceedings from above the door to the Bell!

On a beautiful afternoon, Thursday 2nd June we had a cream tea party in the Square.

The Parish Council organised scones, jam & cream and tea for around 200 people.

Thanks to the many cooks who provided home made scones.

In the evening promptly at 9.45pm Ramsbury Estates lit an enormous beacon on Spring Hill.

Friday 3rd June, Ramsbury British Legion organised a Country Fair on the Rookery field. This day long event included among other things a car boot sale, an exhibition and parade of vintage vehicles, a tug of war, children’s games and a dog fancy dress show as well as the usual burger, beer and tea tents. Over 1,500 people attended during the day which finished with music well into the evening. All who attended agreed that the whole day was amazing and thoroughly enjoyable. Well done to the Legion members for their hard work in organising the whole event.

On Saturday and Sunday there were many street parties organised by groups of neighbours with some people meeting neighbours for the first time.

Holy Cross bell ringers rang a peal of bells and there was a Jubilee service in the Church on Sunday morning.

It seemed as though the entire village turned up to celebrate with Ramsbury British Legion on Friday 3rd June. The Rookery was packed with entertainments, vintage cars, fairground organ with swings, car boot sale, children’s games, vintage tractor display, dogs fancy dress , a corgi competition, BBQ and cakes galore, beer tent and so much more… over 900 people joined in the celebration!

Singer Mark Roberts kept everyone entertained with country music all day, well done Mark!

There was an old fashioned atmosphere, enjoyed by everyone who attended. Huge congratulations to the British Legion committee who made it a truly memorable day!

• Cut out the fruited canes of raspberries; cut back the side shoots of gooseberries, redcurrants and whitecurrants • Summer prune plum trees • Treat apple and pear scab (black spots on the leaves and fruit) with a fungicide • Sow spring cabbage, carrots, turnips, winter spinach and autumn salads • Make a last sowing of French and runner beans • Plant out leeks and winter brassicas Flower Garden • Liquid-feed summer bedding and containers regularly.

• Regularly cut fast-growing hedges such as privet and leylandii • Clip box hedging and topiary towards the end of the month • Pick off the larvae of lily beetles • Look out for capsid bug damage (small brown-edged holes in the new foliage and stunted flowers) on fuchsias and dahlias and spray if necessary with an insecticide (eg Bayer Provado Ultimate Bug Killer 2, or Bayer Provado Ultimate Bug Killer Ready to Use).

Gardening in a changing climate In 2002 the Royal Horticultural Society published Gardening in a Global Greenhouse, a report on the impact of climate change on gardening. Since then, the global climate has changed dramatically, and in 2017 the RHS published an update to the 2002 report, Gardening in a changing climate, which summarises the key projections for climate changes in the UK. What does this mean for gardens here in the west country? By 2100, the report says, the implications are that the mean temperature will be 3°c warmer than it is now with heavy winter and moderate summer rainfall.

Storms will be more frequent and westerly winds more prevalent. Winters will be mild, frost free and with high humidity and there will be variable periods of warm dry weather in summer. The growing season will be longer and soils are likely to be drier in spring, summer and autumn because of increases in temperature and less summer precipitation.

Changing climate conditions might be challenging for gardeners but they also bring with them exciting opportunities to try out interesting new plants. This summer the Royal Botanic Gardens at Kew is running a programme of art exhibitions, installations, talks, films and events on the theme of ‘Food Forever: The Future of Food in a changing World’, which looks at growing food more sustainably (see www. kew.org for more information).

If you’re feeling adventurous, here are some of the vegetables that the head of Kew’s kitchen gardens suggests home gardeners might like to try growing: • tomatillos (Physalis philadelphica) – although closely related to tomatoes, these soft fleshy fruits look completely different and have a tart sour flavour. They’re used in Mexican dishes and sauces such

as salsa. The fruits look rather like cape gooseberries, and when fully ripe are either green, yellow or purple. Grow the seeds as you would tomatoes, and make sure you have at least 2 plants to ensure pollination (although don’t plant too many as they are very prolific fruiters). Seeds are available from Suttons and Thompson & Morgan.

• mashua – You can boil, mash, roast or fry this Andean tuber, Tropaeolum tuberosum, a cousin of the nasturtium with yelloworange flowers that attract bees. It’s a vigorous tough plant – in the right sunny conditions its vines can grow 3 metres (10 feet) high or more, it thrives on neglect, and can happily produce up to eight kilos of tubers per plant a season. However, the jury is out on the taste: people either love them, finding them sweet, slightly aniseed-tasting and peppery, or hate them. But if you don’t like the tubers, don’t despair, as even the dark blue-green leaves are edible – sweet and slightly peppery. You grow mashua from tubers, not seed – order them by mail order from The Husbandry School in Devon (www.husbandry.co.uk). Plant them in the spring once the frosts are over.

• cucamelons – these are the small oval fruits of the cucamelon vine and again are used in Mexican and Central American cuisine.

They have a mild cucumber-like flavour with slightly sour lemony overtones, and are generally used raw, either whole or sliced. They can also be made into pickles. Seeds are available

from Suttons and Thompson & Morgan – sow them in April or May in a propagator or greenhouse, pot them on and transplant outside when all danger of frost has passed, or grow on in the greenhouse. They will fruit from July until September.

• sweet potato cultivars bred for the UK summer – these are grown from cuttings called slips, available in the spring and early summer from Thompson & Morgan. Grow them in a greenhouse either in the ground, in large pots (at least 30cm diameter, one plant per pot) or grow bags, or try them outside in a very warm sunny spot, but don’t put them there until all danger of frost has passed as they are tender. Water and feed them regularly during the growing season. They’re ready to harvest when the leaves go yellow and start to die back, usually in the late summer or early autumn, before the frosts.

• agretti – this comes from the sandy shores of the Mediterranean and tastes a little like samphire. It looks like a bunch of bushy chives when growing. A mature plant is around 30cm (12 ins) wide and 60cm (24ins) tall. It takes around 50 days to reach that size, but you can start cutting the green tops or sections of the plant once it reaches 20cm (8ins), as a cut and come again crop.

Use it raw in salads or cooked in pasta and as an accompaniment to seafood. The longevity of the seeds is less than a year, so make sure you buy new seed each year.

For our June meeting the group took an outing to the Silk Mill Museum in Whitchurch. The weather was kind to us as we walked around the beautiful grounds enjoying watching the brown trout in the river Test that supplies the water for the waterwheel that was built in the 1890’s.

Two of the looms are still powered by the original waterwheel but most of them now have electric motors.

It was a fascinating tour and we learned a great deal, form our guide, Penny, who explained that one single cocoon supplies one mile of raw silk!

The story that is told is that a Chinese Princess was taking tea in the garden when a cocoon dropped into her tea and, while trying to remove it, she saw the tiny thread that we now know as silk. It’s a lovely tale even if it isn’t correct.

The mill originally had two floors but later, by moving the existing windows, a third level was installed and is currently used as an exhibition room where as the other two levels are still used for the production of silk garments. Some of the raw silk that arrives at the mill has to be carefully

‘combed’ until it can be wound onto the bobbins.

And there are quite a few bobbins to fill!

At Whitchurch, they weave and produce 12 different silks including Taffeta, Twill, Organza and Satin, in the most wonderful colours and styles. Each new design takes three weeks just to set up the loom, then, once the bobbins and thread are in place the weaving can begin with 150m of silk taking up to 16 weeks to produce. I will never again complain about the price of silk garments!

We weren’t all WI members either — as we were driven to the Mill in the Ramsbury Flyer and pass grateful thanks to our driver for the day, Paul, a “willing” WI husband.

Our next meeting will be the annual Garden Party on Thursday 14th July and this year our host will be Bev Kennedy.

Chilton Foliat do not have a meeting in August, so our Autumn diary will begin In September when Jim Hynes will be our guest speaker talking about modern farming methods and food cultivation. More details of this will be in the August issue of this magazine.

From the Police & Crime Commissioner What a Jubilee celebration that was with parties up and down the country as we celebrated the reign of our longest-serving monarch!

While the HM, the Queen lives a life which is far removed from anything we’ll ever experience, she has endeavoured to get closer to the people she serves to better understand the realities they face.

It’s this commitment to public service which itself has served as an inspiration to many others and it’s fitting that the celebrations fell within Volunteer’s Week, where we commend the work of those who have given up their time to help others.

This has given me the opportunity to take a closer look at the people who volunteer with the ultimate aim of making Wiltshire safer, whether it’s being part of one of many Community Speed Watch teams, manning CCTV control rooms or supporting victims of crime so that they may be in a position to meet the offender who caused them harm - they all play an important part in the criminal justice system.

Their work not only makes a difference to their local communities by supporting our officers, it also frees up our officers’ time so that they can concentrate on frontline duties. Within Wiltshire Police we have several volunteers including Special Constables who devote hours to their communities in order to make them a safer place to live and work.
