Peter Ball Writes about Friendship

Lockdown and shielding have played a large part in our life over the past few months.

They have been there to give us some protection against Covid 19 It has meant that we have been kept safe; but for many people at a real cost in isolation and the danger of loneliness. It has been a really difficult time.

We have seen in the village community the responses of concerned neighbours that have shown how much friends matter. Simple human contact, having someone to talk to makes all the difference. In this I want to underline the importance of listening.

As with advancing years I survey the story my own ministry as a priest various aspects of the role have shrunk k; I lead fewer services and preach less; I’m no longer involved in clergy development and lay training. What I am left with is a number of people who look to me for what used to be known as Spiritual Direction but now is more likely to be known as Spiritual Accompaniment.

Over the years this has been a developing interest with ecumenical and international aspects. These are linked to my membership of the American based Spiritual Directors International and Spiritual Directors in Europe.

All this has led me to value the relationships and gifts that come with sitting with someone who listens with prayerful attention. The image is of three chairs set, one for the person who comes to talk, one for the director and the third for the presence of Jesus in the encounter.

The Church has offered this in different shapes and forms over the centuries with increasing numbers of lay men and women offering their time and their friendship. It’s not just a task for ‘specialists’, however. We can all be aware of other people and be ready to offer our time and friendly openness to listen.

There were other interesting aspects to working as a mineral exploration geologist in Russia in the 1990s, in addition to meteorites falling out of the sky followed by bottles of vodka, as in the last two stories from Geology Rocks.

One project I worked on as a geologist in a major international mining company, involved setting up an exploration office in the city of Novosibirsk, over 2,000 road miles or nearly 4 hours flight time east of Moscow. The city marks what was a major

geographic, geophysical, geological, geochemical and mineral occurrence information. Under the watchful eye of several senior academicians this information was transformed from old paper maps and other sources into digital data sets and computer drafted maps used to identify target areas for follow-up hopefully leading to new mineral discoveries.

It was not an easy task and involved considerable scientific, geological and not least sensitive diplomatic, negotiation and business skills. Acquiring the data was not always easy as it was necessary to make contact with many scientific institutes and expeditions across Siberia. There were problems inherent in some published Russia data sets, such as whole towns and even cities omitted from maps; map distortions that had to be identified and corrected; and other purposefully obstacle on the course of the Trans-Siberian intended misinformation among the otherrailway en route to the Russian Far East and wise excellent geological observations and grew where the railway was built across the data. very wide Ob River. Sitting in the middle of southern Siberia, Novosibirsk is open to the northerly Arctic weather fronts, and winter is long, cold and harsh with frequent snow showers and temperatures down to -40C. By contrast it can be surprisingly warm, sometimes up to +30C in the summer. It’s a fascinating place and it became the base for the exploration project as it has good travel connections across southern Siberia and is the home of the Siberian Research Institute of Geology, Geophysics and Mineral Resources.

History in the making -

A bishop’s funeral in Holy Cross, Ramsbury

The funeral of The Rt Revd John Neale, who was the first Bishop of Ramsbury in modern times (1974-1988), took place in Holy Cross, Ramsbury on 31st July 2020.

In the socially distanced circumstances common to all funerals at the moment, it was attended by a very small group of mourners with John’s godson, The Revd Mike Lange-Smith, officiating. The Bishop of Salisbury, Nicholas Holtam, preached the sermon and three more bishops and an archdeacon were among those who read the lessons and hymns that John had carefully chosen.

The evening before, the current Bishop of Ramsbury, Andrew Rumsey, received Bishop John’s coffin into the church, and led a simple service of Compline, assisted by Rhona Floate from the parish clergy team.

Rhona will inter John’s ashes in the churchyard on 3rd September in a private ceremony attended by a small group of John’s friends and relations.

The ancient bishopric of Ramsbury existed between 909 and 1075, and several of the early bishops went on to become Archbishops of Canterbury. Some of John’s medieval predecessors will have been laid to rest in the church or churchyard but it must be well over a thousand year ago as the last four of the medieval bishops, who

died between 994 and 1078, are all known to be buried elsewhere.

Yesterday we had our usual monthly meeting of the Whitton Parish Worship Leaders, looking back at recent services, and trying to plan how best we can offer a programme of services under the current (ever-changing, it seems to me!) level of restrictions.

It’s been brilliant to able to be back in church – albeit masked, socially distanced and hymn-less – and it’s lovely to see the numbers gradually picking up as people get more confident, both in coming out generally, and in the knowledge that we’re doing our darndest to keep everyone safe as we worship together.

But it’s not been all loss over the past few months – we learned and gained some interesting things too. For instance, by providing “phone-in” services during lockdown, we’ve been reaching a whole group of people who CAN’T get to church – especially if it’s cold or dark or wet, or slippery underfoot. It’s also an unthreatening way for someone to dip an anonymous toe in the water of worship without commitment or embarrassment. We went for “phone-in” because not everyone is online, but EVERYONE has a phone (although, as it’s on Zoom, increasing numbers are coming in online, and it’s lovely to see the faces)! And so, for both those reasons, we’re going to continue with a

weekly phone-in – certainly for the time being, but I suspect in the long term too, as we gradually re-introduce a wider range of “live” and recorded services.

One thing we are still missing, however, is the chance to sing hymns – not allowed yet in church, and NOT a pretty sound over the phone... In the end, we just gave up on them!. But even that’s had an upside. Without being distracted by the tunes, people are discovering the WORDS of hymns – and some of them are really lovely! Many started life as poems in their own right, and for centuries they’ve been a way of teaching basic theology in an understandable and easily remembered way. The congregations are also realising that we pick hymns for a particular day as part of the whole “journey” of the service – they’re not just a random selection of tunes we think are pretty! We’re also not limited to hymns that people happen to know the tunes to – we’ve found some lovely new ones, and seen new meaning in old favourites.

So – I guess like most things – there have been upsides as well as downsides, and it may take some time to work out which are which. We’re hugely grateful, however, to the cracking team of lay Worship Leaders, who have grown and flourished in tough times, supporting both the clergy and the congregations in new and wonderful ways.

Ornamental garden • Plant spring-flowering bulbs such as daffodils (by mid-September), hyacinths, crocus, muscari, but leave planting tulips until November • Stop feeding shrubs grown in containers, so that they don’t put on new growth that can be cut back by an early frost • Leave the flower heads on mop-head and lace-cap hydrangeas as they protect the new leaf shoots below them from frosts.

Instead, prune them in early to mid-spring • Regularly deadhead, feed and water plants in hanging baskets to prolong flowering until the autumn • You can divide established summer-flowering herbaceous perennials now if your beds are getting too full • Regularly deadhead dahlias to keep them in flower • If your lawn has some bare patches, you can sow some grass seed now to bulk them out •Remove most of the leaves from ponds to prevent a build-up of silt, but leave a few to provide food for pond invertebrates Vegetables and fruit • Harvest autumn-fruiting raspberries, but leave the canes unpruned until February.

Autumn climbers

If one thinks of autumn climbers very often an image of Virginia creeper, smothered in crimson leaves, comes to mind, but there are many other interesting and unusual climbers that come into their own after the summer, some with richly coloured foliage, some with beautiful seedheads, and still others with coloured berries.

Large-scale climbers such as Boston Ivy (Parthenocissus tricuspidata), self-clinging with three-lobed leaves, Virgina creeper (Partheno-

cissus quinquefolia), and Vitis coignetiae (Crimson Glory Vine) are ideal for climbing up through trees or a very large expanse of wall, turning a dazzling fiery crimson in the autumn. A lesser-seen climber, Oriental

bittersweet (Celastrus orbiculatus), which looks rather like a climbing euonymous, has rounded butter-yellow foliage in October followed by yellow and orange fruit that last into winter, and is also vigorous enough for a large tree (make sure you buy a hermaphrodite cultivar to get the fruit on a single plant). All of these climbers are very hardy, down to at least -15° or even -20°, and will reach about 12m (40 feet) in height.

Ampelopsis brevipedunculata

If you want to cover a wall or fence and would like to grow a plant that has turquoise fruits and cream and pink foliage aging to white and green, then you could try the Porcelain Berry, Ampelopsis brevipedunculata ‘Elegans’, a deciduous climber that likes a lightly shady position and is hardy down to about -10° to -15°. It will reach 3–4 metres (10–13 feet). Another climber with bluecoloured fruit is Billardiera longifolia ‘Cherry Berry’, growing to about 2m (6 feet) with bell-shaped yellow flowers in summer. It is not as hardy as the Ampelopsis, so will need protection. Fuchsia ‘Lady Boothby’ is hardy down to -10° and is good for an obelisk or arch, reaching about 2.5m (8 feet). As I don’t have a flowerbed under the wall on my terrace, I grow this in containers (it needs tying in), then in the autumn cut it back and overwinter it in my greenhouse, which I keep just frost-free in winter.

There are of course various Clematis that provide autumn interest: Clematis terniflora is

a very vigorous species, with masses of panicles of white, star-like flowers followed by beautiful silky seedheads. It will reach 6m (20 feet) so needs a lot of room! Another Clematis is Clematis rehderiana, vigorous again (up to 7m or 23 feet), with greenishyellow flowers and hardy down to -10°, good for scrambling up into conifers or over a shed.

More tender climbers needing a sheltered site are Solanum laxum ‘Coldham’, with mauve flowers, or ‘Album’, with white flowers, which are both hardy down to about -5° to -10°. Similarly slightly tender is the passion flower Passiflora ‘Damsel’s Delight’, flowering from June to November. Bomarea multiflora is a tender herbaceous climber growing to about 2m (6 feet) with orange speckled flowers from June to October, hardy no lower than about -5° so it will need mulching and protection in the winter.

Clematis terniflora

North-facing walls are always a bit tricky, but Schisandra rubrifolia might be worth trying. It reaches 6m (20 feet), is hardy down to about -10° to -15°, but needs support if grown on a wall. It has waxy red flowers in spring, and its leaves turn a lovely golden yellow in the autumn.

Disposable masks cause environmental catastrophe Before we were told we had to wear facemarks in shops, I spent a couple of days sewing a whole pile of masks from rather groovy fabric which my late motherin-law picked during her time living in Indonesia.

That sorted out our family, but I was lucky to have fabric, elastic, time, the sewing skills and a sewing machine to be able to do this.

For many the only option is to buy expensive ‘designer’ masks — and there has been a lot of borderline profiteering as people jump on the mask bandwagon. I’ve seen fancy fabric masks selling for £12 to £15 a pop! Alternatively, they have bought single-use masks and these pose a very real threat of environmental catastrophe due to being poorly disposed of.

Disposable masks often feel like they are made of paper or thin fabric, but are actually made of plastic, so won’t biodegrade, and discarded masks and gloves are already turning up in vast numbers along the highways, byways and waterways of the country.

A recent working paper by the Plastic Waste Innovation Hub at University College London has put the current domestic demand for the UK at 24.7 billion masks a year. However, the demand for domestic face masks in the UK drops dramatically – to around 136 million a year – if only reusable masks are used. If they end up in the sea, these masks resemble jelly fish and are eaten by unsuspecting sea creatures with disastrous consequences.

When all is said, and the sums are done around the Covid pandemic, we may find that ‘the medicine’ was worse than the illness — what with over-counting deaths, and undercounting all of the thousands who haven’t received treatment for their other illnesses such

as cancer or routine treatments missed.

But, we still have time to avoid an environmental disaster from this pandemic.

Don’t use disposable masks: make or buy re-usable, rewashable ones. If you do need to use a single-use plastic mask, please dispose of it carefully. In Wiltshire, all plastic film and single-use plastic, including masks, can be disposed of in the household black bins and will NOT go into landfill or end up in the seas. This rubbish is sent to high-tech MBT processing plants to create fuel for electricity generation. So, if you must use disposable, please take them home and bin them responsibly.

Pat Adams retires from Froxfield Parish Council After 13 years of service on the Froxfield Parish Council — including four as Council Chairwoman — Pat Adams has ‘retired’ from her role.

That doesn’t mean that Pat won’t continue to be active in the village community, as she and husband Barry are the heart of the Froxfield Social Committee and organise the regular long-standing community events such as the Beer and Music Festival on the village green.

Pat’s achievements during her time on the PC include: new play equipment and picnic tables on the green; a defibrillator on the Memorial Hall; work on road calming measures on the A4 and, successfully applying for lottery funding to kick start work on the new nature reserve and restoring the river bank on the stream through Froxfield.

Her efforts and enthusiasm will be greatly missed. Meanwhile, Vanya Body (your WW editor!) has been voted in as the new Parish Council Chair, supported by Steve Heppenstall as vice-chair.

Brass Band returns to playing after Covid Restrictions

Rise like a Phoenix?

As a rule, I would have been writing about Phoenix Brass and all the engagements that the Band had played at and all the remaining venues on their list. Following the Government updating its guidance on 16 March to avoid all non-essential contact, brass band activity ceased immediately for the foreseeable future. Brass bands were considered ‘non-essential’ as they were recognized as being a high risk of cross contamination.

So like all other brass bands, all rehearsal, concert, contest and committee meeting activities for Phoenix Brass suddenly came to an abrupt end. At the end of June there was a chink of light when brass bands were informed that they could recommence some form of rehearsal activity but with strict adherence to social distancing. Phoenix Brass began to schedule small group of six players to recommence rehearsal activity only for their hopes to be dashed.

Contrary to advice received previously, the guidance was amended by the Government days later which stated that non-professionals should not engage in playing brass instruments with other people given these activities posed a potentially higher risk of transmission. The Government commissioned further scientific studies to be carried out to develop ro16

bust scientific data for brass playing in order that existing and emerging evidence could be analysed to assist the development of policy and guidelines. The concern specifically surrounded the potential for aerosol production and water droplets.

Well, the results of a set of investigations into the release of respiratory aerosols by brass instruments was released in mid-August, with studies looking at how many particles were released from various brass instruments, measured using a laser particle counter. While both aerosols and droplets were produced, far fewer droplets were seen than aerosols. The type of brass instrument did not change the number of particles released significantly. The experiment also looked at the number of particles released when players breathe (without their instruments) and the results showed that observably fewer particles were produced when playing than when breathing alone. It was also discovered that, on average, playing an instrument released fewer particles than breathing but finally showed a stark reduction in aerosol release when players also used a bell end cover.

Just recently, the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) updated the guidance for

performing arts which had particular effect for Phoenix Brass. In response to the scientific studies commissioned by the DCMS, and with additional reference to the research undertaken, it was announced non-professionals could now engage in brass playing. The change allowed groups of up to six players to again rehearse outdoors, or with members of two households playing together inside. So, hopefully, by the time you read this article Phoenix Brass will have seen some resumption of small rehearsal activity for musicians from the Main Band and possibly players from the Training Band and Beginners Group, the latter having only just started a few weeks prior to lockdown.

However, the research continues into the transmission of water droplets and aerosols which may have a further impact when Phoenix Brass, and indeed other brass bands, can resume some form of ‘normal activity’.

So, was she strangled or did she die of natural causes? Either way, there seems to be no argument that steward James Camb was responsible for pushing the body of actress Gay Gibson out through the porthole, as the MV Durban Castle steamed through shark-infested waters on its way from Cape Town to Southampton in 1947. These are the bare bones of the infamous “Porthole Murder case”, which Steve Herra laid out for us in fascinating though rather sordid detail at our August meeting. Steve is an excellent speaker and brought to life the glamorous, louche lifestyle of first class travel by ocean liner in the 1940s. Steve gave his talk via the Zoom platform, and I am proud to say that about 50% of our membership (plus two husbands) logged on to hear it. Well done, ladies!

We have also decided to go ahead with one of our Centenary events, which was tea and cake around The Tree on Saturday 26th September.

This will run from 10.30am till 12 noon. There is a separate display advertisement for this in the magazine, as we hope that as many Ramsbury people as possible will drop by for a cuppa to celebrate our 100 years. There will be a display of yellow roses, so if you have made any, please drop them into Hills Stores Charity Shop. Don’t worry if crocheting is still on your “to-do list” - I am sure there will be more opportunities next year to festoon the village with yellow roses. If anyone would like to help on the 26th, or is willing to make a cake or traybake, please let either Mary or me know. In the current situation it isn’t possible to have a wet weather alternative for this event, so I am afraid we shall have to call it off if it is wet. Please pray for a fine day!

Calais Crisis: Solidarity v Charity During the COVID-19 lockdown, I was in Calais volunteering with an NGO that supports communities of displaced people. I returned home a few days before the murder of George Floyd, a black man killed by a US police officer who kneeled on his neck for 9 minutes. His murder has since triggered protests, re-centred the Black Lives Matter movement in the media, and inevitably shed light on the realities of systemic racism.

In the UK, the gathering momentum of the Black Lives Matter movement triggered discussions on how we decolonise society. But too often conversations fixate on who we immortalise in public monuments, rather than acknowledging the unpleasant reality of how colonial legacy directly influences the lives of non-White people today. Many consider racism in this country to be firmly in the past. But two books that succinctly disprove this naivety are “Natives”, by Akala, and “Why I’m No Longer Talking to White People About Race”, by Reni Eddo-Lodge. The first, a comprehensive analysis of the legacy of empire in modern Britain; the second an essential toolkit for understanding race relations in Britain today. I strongly recommend that everybody reads them, as they employ personal experience and

staggering statistics to expose the many faces of racism.

Through the lens of this learning, and in light of recent events, I began reflecting on the deeply radicalised injustices occurring at our border. Considering the myriad ways that non-white people are disadvantaged in a society constructed on foundations of slavery, it can no longer be viewed as a coincidence that it is black and brown bodies trapped at our border.

Most of us are familiar with the refugee camps in Northern France. Over the 20 years that these camps have existed, NGOs have provided aid for displaced people living in inhumane conditions. We have donated our money and time. So why, despite these near constant efforts, has very little changed? Something is not working.

The British and French governments collaborate to maintain a hostile environment, whilst charities continue to provide services they won’t. This sustains a kind of limbo, where people's immediate basic needs are (somewhat) met, meanwhile their daily existence is constantly disrupted by violence and displacement. In short, our taxes fund these injustices, while our charita-

ble donations provide minimal relief, salving our conscience without contributing towards long-term solutions.

Just recently, teargas and violence was used to brutally evict more than 1000 people from makeshift camps, with roughly four tonnes of personal belongings confiscated.

The largest eviction since the 2016 dismantling of the ‘jungle’ preceded a visit from Priti Patel and new negotiations on a France-UK border policing deal. But evidence clearly shows this doesn’t make people simply disappear.

Governments succeed with these inhumane practices because they reinforce the dominant implicit narrative that non-white people are somehow less deserving of humanity.

There is no denying the value of dry socks or a hot meal. Change is slow, and people’s lives are at stake, so providing these services is the very least we can do. But what I propose is moving our actions beyond only giving money. That as we move through a time where we are being encouraged to re-examine our worldview, we scrutinise charity too; what is the true purpose of aid?

Who benefits, and who does it serve most? Aid is a reaction, not a solution. Solutions lie in the concept of

As Stewards we are looking at the new ways we can do church, working with our congregation to find new ways of worship, and in this new way of life we need to feel safe when out and about.

Coffee Centre As it sadly seems we will not have use of the Lychgate following the guidelines for Covid-19, until at least the new year.

Good news is here So we have been making use of the lovely weather, and have held two coffee mornings in our gardens, following the guidelines for social distance.

We say thank you to Rosie Pauline for hosting the first coffee morning in July in her lovely garden. What a joy it was to see, and share and chat over coffee together, we are blessed with lots of sunshine in God’s Creation.

Coffee morning Coffee morning was held in my garden at Whitehill Close on August 6th at 10am, it started by raining, but as the morning went on the rain stopped and coffee morning began. How lucky we were to have such a special time with friends and coffee and chat, it rained again but no one worried about the rain, there was too much news going on. Was it about all the new things we learnt in lockdown, or were we just pleased to see friends again? Checking out the puzzles and books available, oh what fun we had. Keep a look out, there will be more to come in the weeks ahead.

we would like to thank our hosts for their help with organising this.

Many members expressed their absolute joy at being able to just spend time together and thoroughly enjoyed wondering around the beautiful gardens and wild flower meadow at their leisure. The roses were in full bloom and the agapanthus were spectacular, unlike some in other village gardens but we won’t dwell on that ! The many colours and species of flowers were wonderful and there was the most tranquil feeling as you walked through the pathways that would gladden any heart. This of course does not just happen but is the result of many hours of very hard work and again we applaud our hosts for all their achievements, what a result!

Sadly this won’t be in September as we first thought, but it is our hope that, providing things progress well, we may be able to have our first full meeting in November, if it so, all the details will be in this magazine and on the Chilton Foliat web site.

The ‘Cool To Be Crafty’ group does not have a restart date as yet but that hasn’t stopped our members from making face masks and other safety garments for family and friends.

Many of our ladies are very internet savvy and have regular chats via zoom or other mediums especially to those who are still unwell or unable to leave home as yet. We look forward to seeing them all in the future.

Being a fan of Gardener’s World (BBC Friday evenings), I was delighted when Monty told us we didn’t have to keep our gardens perfect but to let some of it go wild so having a garden that slopes in different ways that makes mowing difficult we thought it would be a perfect idea.

Having chosen our patch and borrowed a book all about growing a meadow in an average garden we set forth carefully removing the turf, (well one of us did not me) mixing 5 packets of seeds with horticultural sand and spreading it over the area to await our flowers, because the book said so.

Talking of Meadows

While we sat watching several species of bees, hover flies and butterflies were busy flitting through the area enjoying the nectar. As the days have gone on we have been astonished at the wonderful number of wild flowers that are there and grew completely without any human help except not mowing the grass. It is a constant pleasure to us just

watching what’s happening and a wonderful way to spend an hour or more.

As for the original patch, well, it’s still waiting for something to happen, who knows, maybe if we just ignore it mother nature will do the job for us?

Nothing happened, except some ragged weeds that were not planted there and following an early dawn assult from the woodpigeons!

However nature is a wonderful thing and has a way of surprising us.

Because the grass hadn’t been cut for a while, due to poor weather, it was interesting to see various flowers suddenly appearing all over the lawn area so we carefully cut a pathway around this area and the rest of the grass and before our eyes we had the most wonderful collection of wild flowers and little grasses.

We will continue to provide a half-hour “phone-in” service (not Holy Communion) at 11.30 each Sunday, followed by an opportunity to chat. For the phone numbers and log-in details, please see the notice-boards and team website whittonteam.org.uk. The main Sunday service is also recorded and uploaded on Facebook.

“Reflective Spaces” on the 23rd September will be available on the website.
