Tour Program Revised By Language Department A new t o u r p r o g r a m t h a t will enable s t u d e n t s to spend a s u m m e r in E u r o p e without going into debt h a s been established by t h e College. The p r o g r a m is expected to become o p e r a t i v e in 1950, with the t o u r t h a t s u m m e r . The plan i n c o r p o r a t e s f e a t u r e s t h a t will enable s t u d e n t s to e a r n a s u b s t a n t i a l portion of t h e t o u r cost while still a t t e n d i n g college. U n d e r t h e plan the s t u d e n t would c a r r y a normal schedule of c o u r s e s d u r i n g the fall s e m e s t e r . But during the second s e m e s t e r he would enroll in 13 hours. Seven of these would be t a k e n in a special night school; the other six h o u r s would be gained on the s u m m e r t o u r in E u r o p e . Included in t h e n i g h t school schedule would be special sections of I n t e r m e d i a t e G e r m a n and Spanish and Sophomore L i t e r a t u r e .
The children's play " C i n d e r e l l a " was p r e s e n t e d S a t u r d a y , May 6, a s the final production of P a l e t t e and Masque f o r an a p p r e c i a t i v e audience. T h e a n n u a l children's p l a y is p r e s e n t e d by the T h e a t e r P r o duction class of Miss E l v a V a n Haitsma.
During the summer the student would be t r a v e l i n g on the E u r o p e a n tour. -The 54-day t o u r will include e i g h t c o u n t r i e s and will cover some 5000 miles. It will be u n d e r t h e supervision of Dr. Brown and Mr. G e a r h a r t . T h e g r o u p will t r a v e l t h r o u g h G e r m a n y and S w i t z e r l a n d f o r ten days and t h e n split u p into two units. One unit will spend t h e next five weeks in G e r m a n y , and the o t h e r in Spain. T h e n t h e u n i t s will rejoin in S p a i n and t r a v e l home via P a r i s .

The cost of t h e t o u r is $695. This a m o u n t could be earned d u r ing the 18 or 20 week s p r i n g prog r a m . The t o u r fee includes t r a v e l , board, room, and all t r a n s p o r t a t i o n expenses. The only additional cost to the s t u d e n t would be his incidental expenses while on the tour.

Mrs. R u s w a s h e a r d in the p e r f o r m ance of the Concerto No. 4 for Piano and Orchestra by Beethoven. She is a native of Holland w h e r e she w a s active in musical circles f o r m a n y y e a r s . She w a s a w a r d e d a Bachelor's and M a s t e r ' s d e g r e e s f r o m t h e E a s t m a n School of Music. H e r recital a p p e a r a n c e s include p r o g r a m s of t h e E a s t m a n - R o c h e s t e r P h i l h a r m o n i c w h e r e she w a s soloist u n d e r Dr. H o w a r d H a n s o n and t h e Grand R a p i d s S y m p h o n y w h e r e she a p p e a r e d a s soloist und e r J o s e Echaniz f o l l o w i n g h e r winning of t h e Grand Rapids S y m p h o n y Contest in 1949. The Publications Board recently announced t h a t C h r i s t i n e K. Denny h a s been appointed a s Opus editor f o r next y e a r . Filling the position of Milestone editor will be L a r r y Siedentop. Chris Denny, a j u n i o r s t u d e n t f r o m E n g l a n d now residing in Holland, was l i t e r a r y editor of her high school annual m a g a z i n e of creative work. Since a t t e n d i n g Hope College she h a s been corewrite e d i t o r of the 1955 Milestone and served on the editorial board of Opus. S h e h a s done work in English and l i t e r a r y criticism and is an E n g l i s h m a j o r .

S t u d e n t s f r o m 23 S t a t e s and 57 educational i n s t i t u t e s competed in the c o n t e s t f o r a w a r d s t o t a l i n g o v e r $10,000. Over $50,000 h a s been a w a r d e d by S I T A f o r t r a v e l and study, r a n g i n g f r o m $100 g r a n t s to f r e e t r i p s of E u r o p e w o r t h $1000. T h r e e $1000 t r i p s w e r e a w a r d e d to t h i s y e a r ' s t o p winners. On W e d n e s d a y , May 4, the H o p e College Alumni Club of Muskegon held a dinner m e e t i n g a t t h e new Y W C A in Muskegon. E i g h t y p e r sons a t t e n d e d t h e b a n q u e t . T h e p r o g r a m was provided by t h e H o p e College speech and music d e p a r t ments. Miss Helen H a r t o n , a c t i n g c h a i r man of the Speech D e p a r t m e n t , introduced the p r o g r a m which included an o r a t i o n entitled " T h e Uncommon T h o u g h t " , by Don J a c o busse and the o p e r a " S u n d a y E x c u r s i o n " by m e m b e r s of t h e m u s i c d e p a r t m e n t . Included in the c a s t w e r e E l e a n o r C a s p e r , Nelvie Yonkers, Neil P e t t y , J i m K r o n e n d o n k , and Dick De W i t t . B e t t y S c h e p e r s accompanied. Dr. Elliot Accepts New Professorship

It w a s recently announced t h a t Dr. Alice Elliot of the Biology Dep a r t m e n t has accepted an a s s i s t a n t p r o f e s s o r s h i p in t h e Science Dep a r t m e n t of Ball S t a t e T e a c h e r ' s College in Muncie, Indiana. Dr. Elliot c a m e to Hope in 1952 and since t h a t t i m e h a s been active in the S t u d e n t Direction C o m m i t t e e and as a sponsor of Alcor. She is a g r a d u a t e of El Dorado J u n i o r K a n s a s , in 1942. She received h e r bachelor of science d e g r e e f r o m S t a t e T e a c h e r ' s College, E m p o r i a , K a n s a s , in 1952. She received h e r m a s t e r of science d e g r e e f r o m K a n s a s S t a t e College in 1947 and h e r d o c t o r a t e f r o m t h e s a m e ins t i t u t i o n in 1950, w h e r e she m a j o r ed in zoology and p a r a s i t o l o g y . S h e h a s also done g r a d u a t e w o r k a t t h e Universities of Michigan and Wisconsin. Dr. Elliot h a s been elected to m a n y h o n o r a r y scientific o r g a n i zations d u r i n g h e r educational career. T h e s e include: K a p p a D e l t a Phi, B e t a B e t a Beta, G a m m a S i g m a Delta, P h i K a p p a Phi, a n d S i g m a Xi. She also holds p r o f e s s i o n a l m e m b e r s h i p s in t h e Microscopical Society and t h e A m e r i can Association of U n i v e r s i t y P r o fessors.
Last Friday m a r k e d a n o t h e r Hope College May Day celebration with all the color and e x c i t e m e n t of t h i s traditional Hope holiday. Even t h e w e a t h e r m a n c o o p e r a t e d so t h a t the f e s t i v i t i e s could be held out-of-doors. The d a y b e g a n with t h e women's field events. T h e senior girls took first place t h i s year, m a k i n g t h i s the t h i r d consecutive y e a r t h a t t h e class of '55 h a s come out on top. The f r e s h m e n women took second place honors. The d a y p r o g r e s s e d with t h e m e n ' s t r a c k and field events. The F r a t e r n a l Society acc u m u l a t e d t h e m o s t p o i n t s with t h e Cosmos t a k i n g second place.
