appy Cinqo De Mayo! Wow, I must say that April 2010 was such a busy month, and it seems like May will have more of the same! Talk about weird weather we are getting up north here also! One minute the sun’s a shining, the next minute it’s hailing like there’s no tomorrow. As for April I have spent a few days answering phones at the front desk while our trusty Receptionist Maggie was away.

I did enjoy answering questions, and being as helpful as I could. To tell you the truth though, the amount of flack and negativity that I was bombarded with at the frontdesk was a bit overwhelming.

I know for myself, I am learning that when things don’t go my way, I need to just step back from the situation until I

can figure it out. I have also learned that yelling at people does not get me where I want to go. Please people, when you call in to the band office, or are dealing with workers and clients alike let’s all work together. I think although it is harder on us to be nice and look at things from a different perspective, we can all gain so much more by working together for a common goal. I am sure that if you take the time to listen, others will listen to you and try to help you out as best they can. Like my saying always goes, “Positivity is Key!” On April 14, 2010 a lot of people in the office were using Pink Shirts to show our stance on Anti-Bullying! I feel very 3

strongly when it comes to bullying, and dealing with these important matters right away. I have seen first-hand effects of bullying on some of the children from McLeod Lake, and they include: anxiety attacks, night panics, nightmares, being scared, and a tendency to stay by themselves. Not only is bullying on our children so detrimental to their health and well-being, it also has lastingeffects months and months down the road. For my daughter and I, I am teaching her the best I can to share and be nice to others.

I attended the first day of the Lateral Violence workshop which was put on by Ruth and Joseph Haney. What a wonderful experience! Although I was extremely emotional half-way through, I totally wished I could have completed the training, and learn new ways not to do Lateral Violence on others, or to perpetuate it in my life, and or in the office. I find myself telling Rhiannon, hey you just did Lateral Violence on me, for times when she gets upset, and rolls her eyes at me, or tries to glare me down to get her way. Lol, she is so funny, she makes me laugh quite a bit!

I got a wonderful opportunity through the Land Referral Office (LRO) to attend the “Opportunity Rocks” Mining Exploration conference in Prince George on April 28-30, 2010 with Kenneth Solonas, DCCLP and Lionel Chingee, on behalf of LRO. This was a major networking event, where the big companies that work in the mining industry gather together and meet up with all of the companies that either work for them, or want to work for them. They also meet with any interested parties in their work area. As we the TseK’ehne people hold a huge vested interest in the area, it is great that we were a part of this forum. I think that this is such a great opportunity for us to get out and meet the people that are working in our territory! If I go to another one of these conferences, I have a tonne of ideas to beef up our booth! Lol Last but not least, I have been an integral part in fundraising for our Women’s Empowerment Group to go to Dinner and a Movie on Saturday 08 May 2010 for Mother’s Day. It’s OUR DAY to get out and enjoy each others’ company, without the children and the men! Sorry guys, but we do need our healthy breaks! Jolene, and Jodie helped me with a bake sale on the 16th of April, in which we raised $52 for our trip. On the 30th of April, Jolene and Kimmy also helped me do an Indian Taco Sale which went very well, we raised $177 for the trip! Thanks so much to the community and office for supporting us.

Chief Derek Orr’s Monthly Report

Terrane Metals On March 26, 2010 Terrane Metals Corp. publicly announced they have raised $100 million in financing to be used to construct the Mount Milligan gold and copper mine; Mt. Milligan is located within the traditional territory of the McLeod Lake Indian Band. It is expected that Terrane will start preliminary construction in June. The start of this project will be very beneficial to the McLeod Lake Indian Band Membership and community, as well as to Mackenzie and the Province of BC. The construction of the mine will bring construction opportunities for our companies, jobs for our Members, and we will have an enhanced environmental consultation process throughout the life of the mine.

On April 22-23, I attended the 2010 Minerals North Conference at the Civic Centre in Prince George. On Friday, April 23 I attended a press conference with Terrane Metals Corp CEO – Rob Pease., Mayor of Fort St. James - Sandra Harwood, Mayor of Mackenzie – Stephanie Killam, and Mayor of Prince George - Dan Rogers. Together we announced our support for the Mt. Milligan Project. On Saturday April 24, an article and a photo of Rob Pease and I was on the front page Prince George Citizen.

Mackenzie Pulp Mill On April 16, 2010 I attended a Press conference at the Coast Inn of the North in Prince George to announce the finalized sale of the Mackenzie Pulp Mill (formerly Pope & Talbot) to Paper Excellence. In attendance were: Pat Bell, Minister of Forestry and Range; Peter Wardhana, Paper Excellence B-V Group; Karen Cooling, National Staff Representative CEP; and Tanner Elton, President Mackenzie Pulp Development Corporation. Paper Excellence will be reopening the Mackenzie Pulp Mill which will provide a badly needed economic boost to the area, and job and contracting opportunities for MLIB members and companies. The McLeod Lake Indian Band played a critical role in the reopening of the mill. We obtained from the Province control of approximated 800,000 cubic meters of wood per year for 20 years, through an Economic Development Agreement with the Province. That amount of wood provided Paper Excellence with the secure fibre supply it needed in order invest in the mill, and will provide MLIB with royalty payments for the use of the wood. MLIB has made a significant step through the EDA in achieving real revenue sharing with the Province in the forestry sector. The money that comes in will be used to benefit our people. We are presently exploring mechanisms through which the use of the money can be controlled.

It is great to be able to provide good news to McLeod Lake Indian Band Members. It has been a rough ride over the last year and a half. Although we are not yet totally recovered, I believe that we are well on our way and have a great foundation set for the future. Terrane Metals and Paper Excellence are two success stories of how First Nations can be a significant contributor to the local and regional economies. The Mine and the Pulp Mill are going to bring opportunity, not only to McLeod Lake, but to our Region and Province. There will be many jobs, both direct and indirect, that will result in the start and restart of these two projects. At the end of the day, these jobs will provide food, shelter and renewed opportunity for many families in a struggling economy.

McLeod Lake Indian Band looks forward to working with Terrane and Paper Excellence as we all take advantage of the opportunities moving forward.

You have all played a tremendous role in getting McLeod Lake Indian Band through the worst times we have ever faced. Considering the position the McLeod Lake Indian Band was in last year, compared to this year, it is absolutely amazing, and I am excited to see what the next year will bring.

On a personal note, Arlene and I have booked our families flights to Hawaii for our wedding. This week we will choose are accommodations and get one step closer to having all the plans set for our big day in September. It is great now that the weather is a little warmer, the kids can go outside and get fresh air after school instead of being trapped in the house. Owen has discovered baseball and is in love with his baseball glove. He calls it his “mitt� and has been sleeping with it at nights. Not just sleeping with but actually wearing the baseball glove all night!! Owen even wakes up in the middle of the night crying that the baseball glove has fallen off and Arlene or I have to go into his room and help him put the glove back on and tuck him in again. My God he is Sweet!! Erica is enjoying with her piano lessons and continues to excel with her lessons. Logan is absolutely thrilled as we have bought him a new mountain bike for the mountain bike training he will be taking in about a week.

Erica is eager to take off her training wheels on her bike, which we will most likely do this weekend. I told her that she has to learn to ride a two wheeler before we will buy her a new bike, so ever since I have told her that, she has been persistent at asking when we are going to take her training wheels off.

Arlene has been busy around the house. Our new house has a huge flower garden in the back yard and this week Arlene weeded the garden and pre-planted some plants which we will put outside once it warms up a little. Arlene loves plants and gardening. I have been working at getting in shape for the wedding. I am back to the gym as much as possible and riding my bike whenever time allows. I went for a ride last night and able to see the continued improvement in my physical ability. Also, I am looking forward to our spring hunt that will be coming up on May 28-30, 2010. Our spring hunt is designed to encourage community unity as we want everyone to have a part in the harvesting, preparing and distribution of meat. More details will be posted once they are finalized.

In closing, I hope all our Members are enjoying to the spring weather. Our 2010 Annual Gathering Assembly (AGA) will be on August 5-6 in McLeod Lake. The planning has already started and we hope this AGA will be biggest and best yet.

MLIB Youth & Family report

Spring is here!! I have daffodils on my kitchen table that seem to give testament to say we’ve weathered another winter in this quite place.

The Youth this month continue to enjoy Dance and Piano Lessons, homework nights, and little adventures along the way.

Some adventures in March brought us swimming, games days, and a skiing trip to Powder King – where the outdoor sun warmed our spirits and the exercise warmed our snowsuits.

Two Youth participated in a Gangs, Guns and Drug conference over the spring break – Thank you Lionel and Scott for Chaperoning, I think the Bowling and after hour activities helped make the event very special.

Six youth attended the Conference “On the Rise” sponsored by DuzCho Logging.

Thank you to the Chaperones, Roberta and Verne who were awarded “Best Chaperone”.

Next month Calendars will go out to the parents and you can find them posted on the bulletin boards.

Day Trip To Lejac Residential School Site May 12, 2010 As a follow up to the Residential School Trauma workshop that was held in McLeod Lake on March 2, 3, & 4, a day trip is planned to Lejac on May 12 th for a closure ceremony.

Attendance at the workshop is not required for you to attend this outing. This event is open to residential school survivors of McLeod Lake Band and their family members. Because of the intense nature of this journey, it is not recommended to bring young children.

The band has chartered buses and hired a caterer to prepare a barbeque lunch at the Lejac site. Chief and council of Nadleh band have also been invited to this event. Health team staff and various religious and spiritual leaders will be on hand to provide support and guidance.

The following is a bus pick-up schedule on May 12 th : - 7:30 am – McLeod Lake Band Office - 8:15 am – Bear Lake Store - 9:00am – Hart Shopping Mall Parking Lot (By gas station) - 9:15 am – Pine Centre Mall Parking Lot (By bus stop) If you would like to attend, you can leave your name and contact information (phone number or message number) with reception. Diane Nakamura Greetings newsletter readers!

My name is Diane Nakamura and I am the mental health counselor here at the band office. I took over from Vince Sherry in December. I came into this job knowing I had big shoes to fill…and big hair! LOL Just kidding Vince!

I’ve been here four short months and I absolutely adore being here. I’d like to thank the staff and the community members for making me feel so welcome and at home here at MLIB. It is an honour and a privilege to serve this community.

I’ve been a resident of Prince George for nearly 20 years and have worked in the counseling/social services field for the past 25 years. Prior to starting my job here I had never set foot in McLeod Lake. I’m now wondering why the heck I didn’t come out here sooner!!

I am at the band office four days a week – Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday. I work Wednesdays at Central Interior Native Health in Prince George. I am also an alternative healing practitioner and I provide energy balance treatments through Reiki. I am a certified Reiki Master. I am available to provide treatments to staff and community members at no charge.

When I am not in counseling or Reiki sessions, I can be found at Women’s Empowerment group on Thursday nights, doing home visits, scheming about what to plant in the community garden…and playing pranks on co-workers…actually this is called “team building”! I am also coordinating the one-day trip to the former Lejac site on May 12th for the closure ceremony.

I am looking forward to spending more time out in the community now that summer is on its way. I love fishing, berry picking and just being outdoors in the sun and the fresh air. This is definitely God’s country! I am grateful to be here.

Youth Conference – March 22nd-24th

Chaperoning the Youth Roberta Mitchell and I were assigned as Chaperones for the Youth Conference (On the Rise) at Prince George in late March. I chaperoned kids and youth before on numerous occasions so that helped.

By the end of Day Two, I commended them all on their behaviour. There were a lot of young people at the Conference, at least 200! And trying to keep track of 6 kids in a conference with so many people, and staff and other Chaperones was a continuous challenge. You really had to be on your toes at all times. But our Candidates were very well behaved! They made all their workshops, they asked to be excused (even just to used the ‘facilities’), and they conducted themselves as Adults during the Conference.

I used to run the kids softball clubs out of McLeod Lake back in 1990-92. One year we had 2 clubs, the little ones from 6 years old to 11, then the next group was 12 to 15 year olds. Both clubs were mixed, boys and girls, from the McLeod Lake area. We used to play teams out of Mackenzie and Bear Lake, really had a lot of fun. Also a lot of hard work. Then one year Peter Prince and I chaperoned (and drove) some ten teenagers & Elders to a youth conference in Victoria.

That Tuesday evening, I pointed it out to them, and then said that I wouldn’t be one bit surprised if the Conference organizers recognized them for their good behaviour. Well guess what?

On March 22-24 this year, we had six teenagers ranging from 13 years old to 15. Five girls and a boy! Robert, Shelby, Shayla, Shelby, Janine, Tessa, and Alyssa.

Robert & I shared a room. The main challenge as a Chaperone is to always know at every minute, every step of the way, where each youth is. So Roberta and I made sure we explained to them right at the beginning, that Sunday evening, when we checked into our rooms at the motel, that they must never go anywhere (and we mean anywhere!) without first letting us know. Even if it’s just across the street to the convenience store, a chaperone must always be with you.

The organizers held a ‘simulated’ potlatch on the last evening of the Conference. And there were a lot of people including Youth, Elders, staff and chaperones at the potlatch. The speaker, Mary Teegee, handed out gifts thanking different people for their work at the conference. Then she publicly said ‘thank you’ to the McLeod Lake group and especially to our Candidates for being so well behaved!

I thought that was so cool! I give a lot of credit to Roberta who spent the time to sit them down and to explain to them as we went what we were going to be doing each step of the way and then their responsibilities. And she spoke to them as Adults which accounted for a lot!

And they understood. Because each time they always asked when they wanted to do something.

The Conference went for three days, Monday to Wednesday, and we left on Thursday morning back home to McLeod Lake. We actually started that Sunday evening, meeting Sharon Dugan, the Youth Coordinator, at Prince George.

Then registering at Esther’s Inn. Later we checked out the Conference location at the Coast Inn and received preliminary instructions from the organizers. Then went for supper at McDonald’s and took in a movie.

Also, Jenine Solonas, Band Councillor came in on the second day to assist in the chaperoning and to help us out. That really helped. She spelled us off when we needed a break.

I want to thank Robert, Shayla, Janine, Shelby, Alyssa and Tessa for their work.

MLIB Employment & Training

Hello Everyone, Spring has sprung and the rain is here to make everything grow.

I have some things of great importance to tell you.

First of all, I have put on the MLIB Web Bulletin board that I am collecting names to have a Graduated Licensing Program here in McLeod Lake Village. I need 10-12 members to produce their Learners License (L) to the Employment and Training Department. When the Department does get the 10-12 members then we will begin to organize the drivers training.

The E&T Department has the Counselors from the Mackenzie Employment and Career Centre at the McLeod Lake Indian Band hall for members to get career counseling. They have three counselors whom are Cindy Szekely, Michele Waite and Miranda Grattan. Every month the E& T department has one of these lovely ladies come to the office to provide their services. The next date is May 11, 2010 and Michele Waite will be here to provide any members with Career Counseling.

The department has been trying to get some details on the Mount Milligan Project. If you are still not sure of what kind of career to look into you can use the Terrane Career Wheel. You can look at the Career Wheel up on the web – http://www.terranemetals.com/i/Terrane-Metals-Team-Wheel

The department has successfully had members certified. There is one Mining Exploration Field Assistant, two Traffic Control Persons.

The department is using a different type of training for WHMIS/TDG this year. It is online training and members must have an email address to access this training. If you are interested in using this, please get a hold of me at the office. There is a Level 1 First Aid and Transportation Endorsement on May 17 & 18, 2010 here at the Band Hall.

You will have to find a way to be here on those dates. Please phone me if you are interested in a spot.

The department’s Budget for the fiscal year 2010-2011 has only tuition coverage, I am in the process of trying to get more monies to cover travel/meals for training. If you do not live in the village then you will be referred to your closest AHRDA. If they cannot fund you, they will provide you with a letter of non-funding and then you would approach the McLeod Lake Indian Band Employment and Training Department. If you do not know whom is the AHRDA in your area is, just phone me or email me at malec@mlib.ca and I will get the information to you.

Jennifer Weightman COAL/SITE C Hi Everyone, I have a quick update to share with everyone regarding the BC Hydro Site Project as well as some of the mining projects in the area.

BC Hydro As some people may have heard the Premier, Gordon Campbell and Minister of Energy and Mines, Blair Lekstrom made an announcement on April 19, 2010 that BC Hydro will move into the Environmental Assessment and regulatory process for the proposed Site C dam. Many people have confused this with an approval for the dam which is a decision that has not yet been made. Along with the announcement there were protests held by concerned community members from Hudson Hope and surrounding farmlands.

I encourage anyone that is interested in the proposed dam or would like to gather a better understanding of the affected area to drive the road from Hudson Hope to Frt St John. The drive clearly displays the Traditional Lands that will be affected from flooding as well as homes and farmlands in the flood area.

Mining The mining in the area seems to be picking up with many companies talking about increasing production. Currently there are 3 mines producing coal, Peace River Coal, WCC Wolverine Mine and WCC Brule Mine. Duz Cho Construction is working at the WCC Willow Creek mine completing road upgrades in preparation for the re-opening, Jordan Calder and Paul McNabb-Tylee are working for Duz Cho Construction on this project.

As many of you may have heard First Coal is closed down under care and maintenance for two reasons. The first is that the ADDCAR mining system was not working as effectively as expected so they have sent the cutting head and coal collector back to be re-adjusted. Secondly the outcome of West Moberly First Nations lawsuit against the BC Government has ordered First Coal to shut down for 90 days while West Moberly First Nations and the BC Government create a plan to help recover the caribou population in the area. I will continue to keep everyone updated on this once more information is released.

Hadi Tsekenne; Hope all is well since I last spoke with you all, on the other hand have been enjoying this beautiful weather and also caught my first fish of the year at the bridge 2.5 pounds....hahaha In April I was able to attend a Water Act workshop in Terrace, which is beautiful country. I had the great opportunity to meet with Nass Valley First Nations, Tahltan First Nations and many more surrounding areas. The topic of water in the eyes of the first nations is so powerful and meaningful, its a wonder why sometimes this is taken for granted in other peoples eyes and all they see is the all mighty dollar. I was very pleased to be part of trying to make a difference with other first nations, we are the strong first peoples and sticking together we will make change.

There also was two trade shows in April, one in Prince George at the civic centre which councillor Fred Inyallie attened with me as well as an elder we invited Lawrence Solonas. This was very successful and thanks to Kenneth Solonas and Lionel Chingee for putting together the MLIB,Summit,Duz Cho Construction,Duz Cho Logging booth.

The other trade show was in Dawson Creek, this one was also succesful and it was very nice to see Fay Masear and Russ Boyko manning the Summit Booth, thanks you two for a great job!

At the end of April I attended a Emergency Social Services training at the regional district of prince george with Jodie Ware and Stephanie Rocheleau. This is my 5th year attending this training and its an emergency program of the first 72hrs. of a state of emergency, example could be house fire to floods, landslides, etc.... living here in the remote area of mcleod lake it is necessary to hold these tickets and share the knowledge with the community.

Lastly, I was able to go to the Mount Mulligan Camp May 3, 2010 with Derek Orr, Fred Inyallie, and Cheyenne Inyallie. We were able to tour the camp and meet the new terrane sustainability committee that I have been chosen to sit on for the life of the mine. I have included a few pictures to share.

Newsletter & Website Update The Grizzly Inn Hello hello from The Grizzly Inn in Bear Lake!! Kandy and I are here 7 days of the week. We took over the Motel and the RV Park (what’s left of it, lol) as well, and it seems that our first 60!! treeplanters are going to stay with us this weekend. It is so much fun!

Sometimes we have our slow hours, sometimes we are sooo busy!

Website In the slow hours of the day I’m always working on the MLIB website. I really enjoy prepping all the reports for the newsletter and updating the MLIB website. I mentioned before that it is very important to have the right info on

the MLIB website, especially now with all the publicity around McLeod Lake and the McLeod Lake Indian Band. Derek’s picture was in the newspaper twice and the news articles online are uncountable.

Newsletter Maybe you noticed that The Traveling Feather is getting more pages? Slowly we are adding pages because Members of MLIB, people from the community and even people from outside are submitting stories and reports. We hope it makes The Traveling Feather even more interesting to read!
