THE ELITE WORLD CUP

A TASTE OF THE SOWETO KOTA

FESTIVAL

The pedestrianised trading area between Cavendish Square and Cavendish Connect, from Warwick Street on the southern side to Vineyard Road on the north, is situated in the heart of the Cavendish Square shopping area Previously a vehicular route, this walking section has been home to informal traders on the pavements for many years

To complement the extensive upgrades which have been completed on the ground and first floors inside Cavendish Square, the outdoor area will now be upgraded Aimed at seamlessly connecting the shopping centres with the street, the redevelopment will create an

Cavendish Square creates a new Outdoor Boulevard

attractive and safe space, and provide improved conditions for the traders, to integrate into the environment

The outdoor area has long been characterized by its quaint and trendy shopping ambience However, being outside, shoppers and the traders are exposed to the weather, which has frequently prevented the traders from operating, and impacted their ability to run sustainable businesses The refurbishment will empower the traders to grow and develop their businesses, with lock up stores and kiosks while maintaining the character of the space Additionally, the traders will have access to WiFi connectivity and the stalls will be serviced

with electricity and water

Recognising the potential of the project, the traders and Old Mutual Property have agreed to join forces to ensure that the appeal of the street is maximised While the renovations are taking place, the traders will be going on a business coaching programme, covering everything from marketing, to finance, operations, business strategy and logistics They will also be geared up with digital payment processes so that visitors to their stalls will be able to purchase using credit cards and smart phone apps such as Snap scan, when the market re-opens

Construction commenced on site in July 2023. The renovations are scheduled for completion prior to the 2023 festive season, to enable the traders to benefit from the increased foot traffic in the area over this period.

The upgrade is being undertaken by Old Mutual Property who own the adjacent Cavendish Square shopping centre. The Dreyer Street upgrade project is the culmination of longstanding relationships and collaboration between Old Mutual Property, Cavendish Square, the Claremont Traders Association and the City of Cape Town.

R1-million raised and new ambassadors announced at Laureus Sport for Good Foundation Charity Ball

The Laureus Sport for Good Foundation (LSFGF) received a significant financial boost at its annual fundraiser this past weekend

The LSFGF charity ball was held at the Cape Town International Convention Centre, supported by Carrol Boyes and in partnership with Cape Grace Hotel Some 330 guests were in attendance, and collectively raised R1-million for the ongoing work done by the Foundation to support over 25 Sport for Social Development programmes across the country

The charity ball also served as the backdrop to the announcement of two new Laureus SA Ambassadors, awardwinning media presenters Elana AfrikaBredenkamp and Motshidisi Mohono, who now join an expanding group of South African icons who assist the Foundation and the programmes it funds to uplift and empower the youth in underserved communities through sport.

"It is an absolute honour to have been brought in as a Laureus Ambassador, Mohono said about her appointment. “I hosted the 2015 and 2016 red carpet for the Laureus World Sports Awards and I got to see the work being done by the ambassadors within the Sport for Good space It was so great to see how sport has changed and is changing so many young people’s lives - just as it has changed mine

From showing the youth that there are opportunities through sport, to getting them off the streets and making them community minded and enjoy working as a team I have seen the impact that the Laureus Sport for Good Foundation makes, and I am truly honoured to be a part of it”

Added Afrika-Bredenkamp, “Being an ambassador for the Laureus Sport for Good Foundation allows me to use my talent for

good, while embracing my role as a broadcaster As part of amplifying my duty as a Changemaker in South Africa, I look forward to supporting and working together to champion Sport for Good”

Morné du Plessis, Chairperson of the Laureus Sport for Good Foundation South Africa, welcomed the broadcasting powerhouses to the Laureus family: “While most of our ambassadors are iconic sportsmen andwomen, every now and then we identify personalities who may not have won olympic medals or performed on the sporting stage, but are making a difference within their own professional and personal spheres Elana and Motsi are two such people - powerful women who use their respective platforms as opinion leaders within the media for good

It is therefore truly a privilege and honour to have them be a part of Laureus SA, where I know they will continue to use their skills and talents to amplify our work while bringing sustainable change to the youth through the power of sport”

WORLD FIRST FOR MOTORSPORT

The world of motorsport is on the cusp of a revolutionary transformation as the inaugural electric hyper car Elite World Cup was officially announced on Monday, 21 August, in Johannesburg The first-of-itskind racing championship marks a significant lane-swerve in the evolution of motorsport, as the world leans in to witness developing countries, South Africa and China, joining forces to provide a global competing platform like no other

The announcement came a few hours ahead of the BRICS Summit, at Sandton Square, where founding members of the new Elite World Cup consortium - Tokyo Sexwale, Liu Yu and Stephen Watson – set the stage ablaze with their intention for the first electric hyper car World Cup to launch in September 2024. Pipped to be an international showdown of premium performance, elite talent and innovation –the founders agree that the Elite World Cup creates a new international racing spectacle.

“The Elite World Cup is not just a racing competition,” says Sexwale, Co-founder of the Elite World Cup. “It is a testament to the power of collaboration, innovation and sustainability.”

The Elite World Cup arrives as the unapologetic new kid on the block that seeks to attract superior drivers with highend driver profiles, as well as an advisory board that offers enough motorsport credentials to break the ceiling.

Stephen Watson, Co-founder of the Elite World Cup, says: “The Cup is called Elite for a reason as we will engage and invite experienced international racing car drivers that have competed across F1, Indy Car, NASCAR, WRC and the likes We want the drivers and teams who have established themselves and represented their countries in various prestigious motorsport championships around the world,” adds Watson

From the thrilling racetracks of Europe to the bustling streets of Asia and Africa to the sprawling landscapes of the Americas, the Elite World Cup will challenge drivers and engineers alike to redefine the boundaries of speed, performance and sustainability Teams from around the

world will compete in a series of 8-10 exhilarating World Cup race weekends, pushing the limits of electric vehicle technology to new heights.

Pressing go between September 2024 and March 2025, the Elite World Cup will deliberately unfold at the traditional racing calendar off-season.

According to Yu, there are three primary questions one asks when it comes to the selection of electric hyper cars: how big is its performance, how far is its range and how rapidly can you recharge? Cue the Lotus Evija

Leading the charge as the preferred Elite World Cup hyper car is the remarkable highpowered Lotus Evija The Lotus Evija embodies the pinnacle of electric vehicle engineering, seamlessly combining cutting-edge technology with breathtaking performance

As a road car, the Lotus already holds fast its reputation as a striking manifestation of elegance and raw power With 2000+ bhp (brake horsepower) and acceleration of 0 to 300kmh in just over 9 seconds, the Lotus in its commercial glory, is no stranger to the intrepid petrol head.

Unveiling the Lotus Evija: A Glimpse of the Future

The Lotus Evija on display at Sandton Square, is a limited-edition Emerson Fittipaldi (Brazil), one of only eight in the world Its captivating design, featuring sleek lines and aerodynamic contours, speaks to the fusion of form and function Beneath its gloating exterior lies a cove of engineering excellence – an all-electric powertrain that delivers astonishing acceleration, exceptional handling, and an exhilarating driving experience that competitive drivers crave Revealed at the foot of the emblematic Nelson Mandela statue, Sexwale, Watson and Yu took great pride in showcasing the limited-edition Lotus Evija on the Elite World Cup stage Sexwale, who is revered as the late-A1 GP’s Team South Africa Seat Holder, and a comrade and confidant of South Africa’s beloved Madiba, expressed his pride and sentiment in unveiling the Lotus Evija. “Nelson Mandela recognised that sport has the power to unite nations, driving patriotism and its positive influence for change. Launching the Elite World Cup, on Nelson Mandela Square at the foot of Madiba’s statue on the eve of the BRICS Summit, is the start of a new and exciting era,” says Sexwale.

A Platform for Change

As the motorsport industry embraces the transition to electric power, the Elite World Cup stands as a beacon of change. By fostering competition, collaboration, and breakthroughs in electric vehicle technology, this event will drive advancements that have far-reaching implications for the automotive industry and beyond

“We have run Team China in many prestigious racing championships since we first started racing internationally in 2004,” says Yu “The automotive landscape has evolved significantly, and as the electric car industry is growing rapidly in China, we’re excited and proud to be at the forefront of this Elite revolution in sports,” says Yu

Special Message from across the Atlantic

On the night the founders received a special message from Emerson Fittipaldi,

two times F1 World Champion and Indy 500 winner Fittipaldi, who had been attending a motorsport gathering hosted by Lotus as part of the Monterey car week in Los Angeles, sent a video note saying:” What an exciting time, the beginning, the foundation of the Elite World Cup, with these modern full electric cars, this is the future What an idea to have the GT World Cup for country racing against country I hope I will have the Brazilian team, for sure I am going to have the Brazilian team!”

Exploration And Evolution Behind A Young Chef’s Journey To The Global Gastronomy Stage

Meet dynamic young chef, Mythrayie Iyer, from India who will be representing the region of Africa, Middle East and South Asia at the Grand Finale of the SPellegrino Young Chef Academy competition 2022-23

Since January this year, when she wowed the local jury with her signature dish, Mythrayie has been busy Not just cheffing back home at restaurant Farmlore in Bengaluru, India, but also travelling, researching, practising, and learning, to deepen her knowledge Mythrayie will be cooking her dish to present to the grand jury “Seven Sages” composed of some illustrious names in international gastronomy: Pía León, Hélène Darroze, Vicky Lau, Nancy Silverton, Eneko Atxa, Riccardo Camanini and Julien Royer

Mythrayie’s signature dish, entitled Barter, celebrates the evolution of Indian cuisine through the age of exploration, from the 15th century onwards. “Since the regional final, I’ve travelled to Lisbon, Portugal to gain more insights for the finale and to get an understanding about the world exchange of ingredients, which is the inspiration behind my dish. Lisbon is the port origin from where Vasco da Gama’s ships sailed to India.”

She explores the concept as a culinary meditation as well as a journey through history. “It provides food for thought as to what we mean by the cuisine of a country,” she says. The dish is presented in two parts. One half uses only indigenous ingredients and shows what Indian cuisine looked like before the establishment of the trade routes and the arrival of ingredients from overseas The second demonstrates what Indian cuisine has become today with the introduction of spices and vegetables from other parts of the world”

In essence her dish is a continuation of the philosophy behind Farmlore, where she is head chef, working alongside chef patron Johnson Ebenezer, who is also her mentor for the competition The restaurant is located on a 37acre farm “We grow most of our produce and the menu is ever-changing with seasonal

ingredients from the farm We are discovering and rediscovering locavore traditions, cultures, and connection to our Mother Earth It starts with sourcing produce from the nearest sustainable vendors We’re trying one step at a time to become completely self-sustainable, completely powered by solar panels and cooking on a wood fire that we source from the farm”

In the lead up to the final chapter of the competition she will continue working on her dish and refining a few techniques “It’s been a constant process since the regional final From talking to plate artists, reading more around the concept, traveling to Portugal, and of course the kitchen trials” All of this with the ongoing support of her mentor

“Working together with chef Johnson over the last 4 years for the restaurant, naturally led me to admire him as a mentor. We discussed the topic a few years ago during a conversation and are happy to see it taking shape on a plate. He always keeps such a cool head, constantly reminds me to have fun, put my best foot forward, and see it as a bigger opportunity leading to many more things along the way.”

Mythrayie is one of two female chefs from the 15 finalists competing for the global title of S.Pellegrino Young Chef Academy winner. Asked how it feels to be leading the way for young female chefs, she says, “Well of course it feels great to get that extra spotlight, but honestly I believe there is no gender bifurcation when it comes to the profession of chefs The ability of a chef to excel professionally is up to their personal determination and grit, regardless of gender”

Her advice to young female chefs starting out on their journey and considering entering next year’s competition, “Stay focused on getting better in the kitchen and remove yourself from the idea that your skills and abilities are limited by your gender”

The team in South Africa and Sanpellegrino wish her the best of luck with preparations for the final chapter of the competition

Many nations come from a history of colonization which I can imagine was not the greatest situation any country found itself in, and independence just became the prime achievement to aim for

On 15 August 1947, India gained its independence from its colonizers and the journey to write a new history and aim for better achievements began

15 years ago, the India Club in South Africa was born, and an annual celebration which today boasts an estimated 10 000 visitors was born with only 100 people in attendance Over the years, this SA India Day Carnival grew in numbers to a point of reaching the world famous Wanderers Cricket Stadium.

The Wanderers Cricket Stadium on the 12th of August 2023 was transformed into what I can simply describe as a taste of India. People were beaming with pride, loudly and happily celebrating their culture and heritage.

Colourful and symbolic clothing was the order of the day as all kinds of colourful traditional clothing dominated this visual spectacle.

The smell of delicious spices drew you and your taste buds towards the large tents selling mouth-watering food. In the process of exploring these tents consisting of unimaginable deliciousness, I encountered a manager from one of the restaurants out to sell their food at the carnival, and he told us about how most of the Indian food sold at their tent has plant based spices which are complimented by the plant based cooking in every dish they produce

I had a moment to take a short food journey of India during lunch time The first thing I want to say is that from watching a lot of TV shows and YouTube videos, I walked in there prepared to endure some really spicy and hot food, but did I not get disappointed I instead found moderately spiced food with many flavour profiles I had to try to navigate

A few dishes stood out for me There was this orange-ish fried chicken that was orange even on the inside, lightly salted, and that was about it with it, but not bad in state Their “chilli chicken” was rather a barbecue tasting chicken than chilli, but I did enjoy it a lot I liked the roti, it felt familiar They then had the butter chicken which was drenched in this thick orange looking source, which I have to say that it was the best part of the meal by far Then the one piece of food that had ne undecided was the Punjab samosa, as the shell of the samosa was not to soft, yet dry enough to provide a nice soft crunch when biting into it, but the filling left a lot of confusion in my head and did not quite hit the spot for me

One thing that I am sure of is that this carnival left me with a lot curiosity about the history of India and its people, but more importantly it has left me a curious craving for Indian food, and I intend on satisfying that craving soon.

In 2024, find yourself at the SA India Day Carnival for an experience that will stir your curiosity.

Cancer Screening Apathy Is Costing Men Their Lives

Women are important health promotors when it comes to urging men to get screened for prostate cancer.

An average of five South African men die from prostate cancer every day, yet early detection of this disease could mean a 95% chance of survival

Global research shows that men consistently underutilise preventive health care services compared to women This situation doesn’t seem to be any different in South Africa

A study conducted by Professor Shingai Mutambirwa, a founding member of the Prostate Cancer Foundation of South Africa (PCF), found that one of the main reasons why women outlive men by an average of six years is because women tend to take better care of their health

Prof Mutambirwa is Head of Department of Urology at Sefako Makgatho Health Sciences University (SMU) in Pretoria He says that men tend to pay less attention to their health and are more inclined to ignore the warning signs of disease

“The fact that us males see our physicians five times fewer in our lives than females do is definitely one of the reasons why men are more likely to die from cancer,” he says “Basically, guys don’t take their health as seriously as females do,” he says “And given that the two leading causes of death worldwide are cardiovascular disease and cancer, this is something that needs to be addressed”

Studies have found that although both men and women recognise that cancer screenings are effective, a higher percentage of men have never been for a cancer screening before This is despite the fact that 1 in 6 South African men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer during their lifetime and an early diagnosis could mean a 95% chance of being cured

The Cancer Association of South Africa (CANSA) reports with great concern that the number of men being diagnosed with late-stage cancer is on the rise.

“A Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA) blood test at your health care practitioner or clinic takes only a couple of seconds and could potentially save your life,” says Joani Sadie, Corporate Relationship Manager at CANSA

Annual PSA testing should begin in men from the age of 40 who are at a higher risk for prostate cancer This includes Black men who have a 60% higher risk for prostate cancer and are 25 times more likely to die from prostate cancer than white men Men who have a father or brother with prostate cancer are 2 to 3 times more likely to develop prostate cancer themselves and should also be screened annually from the age of 40, as should men who have any first-degree female relatives diagnosed with breast cancer All other men should be screened annually from the age of 45

“Women tend to be better than men at going for regular health checks, including important cancer screenings such as pap smears and mammograms,” says CEO of the Prostate Cancer Foundation, Andrew Oberholzer “We are grateful to all the women who have male partners over forty and who encourage them to go for a PSA blood test This simple screening test can help to detect prostate cancer in the early stages, when treatments are potentially curable Men tend to forget how important regular health screenings are, so these reminders from their partners can help to ensure that they make that important appointment,” he says

The annual Hollard Daredevil Run plays an important role in raising awareness about prostate and testicular cancer Once again this year, thousands of men nationally will be running 5km dressed only in a purple speedo on Friday 13 October, with all proceeds going to CANSA and the Prostate Cancer Foundation of South Africa

“The Hollard Daredevil Run now in its 13th year promotes male cancer awareness and the fact that early detection of both prostate and testicular cancer can save lives” says Joanna Mondon Head of Brand and Advertising at Hollard “The beauty of this event is that it not only attracts the attention of men and boys, but also of the wider population reaching communities around the country to spread this important message”
