appy New Year! As we enter our tenth year of publishing local community magazines, we sadly say farewell to the lovely Lauren, our longest serving member of staff. Lauren joined us just under three years ago to help me for a few hours a week with credit control. Before long, she was poached by Marcus on the advertising side, increased her hours to three days a week around school pick-up and built up a huge list of happy clients. The office simply won’t be the same without her and all of us, including Humphrey, wish her all the best in her new job which shaves a good hour off her daily commute/school run duties. Mark Raynsford with his tips on getting results from your New Year resolutions

H

appy New Year! There’s a high chance, as you read this, that two things have happened over the last month or more.

1 - You’ve enjoyed Christmas (in reality it was most of December!) and are feeling the effects of too much alcohol, sugar and carbohydrate rich foods?

2 - You’d like to make some changes to the above, and would gladly tick one or more improvement area; improving sleep, energy, waistline and food choices again?

Here are my starting the New Year with results, not resolutions;

WORK OUT THE FIRST STEP OF THE JOURNEY: WHAT things are you currently doing too much of?

WHAT could you substitute some of the above for?

(Often just stopping or eliminating something, results in a mental ‘kickback’ after a few days and people falling off the wagon. Replacing something as opposed to eliminating often works better) WHAT do you need to start, or do more of?

WHAT obstacles are likely to occur, such as kid’s clubs, work projects, or social engagements which WILL occur but don’t need to be a sticking point, merely acceptance and then planning around?

WHAT is the FIRST step you could make RIGHT NOW, which is an improvement upon yesterday - and starting this is crucial - no matter how small?

EVERYTHING STARTS WITH A PLAN Know what you want to achieve and why.

If it’s weight loss, often, ‘I want to lose weight” isn’t enough of a mental anchor to get through and over obstacles that will undoubtedly appear.

What are the real reasons for the weight loss? What would it mean and change in your outlook and daily life if you achieved that weight loss?

STARTING NEW YEAR WITH RESULTS NOT RESOLUTIONS FIVE QUICK IMPROVEMENT TIPS: 1) More water The fact that our body is made from over 60% water so shows its importance. Lots of Christmas ‘food and drink’ has dehydrated us, leading to tiredness, fake hunger and poor concentration - aim for 1.5 litres over a day

JOURNEY OVER DESTINATION Too often we place all our focus on what we want/want to achieve.

For sure, we MUST know our ‘destination’, but just like a holiday or trip to relatives, once we know our destination, ALL the focus should be on the journey.

Let’s say you’re heading to Cornwall - once you know this, you should forget about it until arrival! All your FOCUS should be on the journey, the roads you’ll take, the ones to avoid, best time to leave, the lunch stops etc. These are the things which will get you to your destination, not the destination itself.

This is exactly the same with weight loss or self improvement.

I often hear talk around lacking motivation or willpower, but it’s rarely something which just taps us on the shoulder and says “OK, I’m ready, let’s go for a run or to the gym”. Motivation comes from starting, taking action, or beginning a plan.

STARTING IS THE KEY No matter how small, and then repeat again and often.

Just like rolling a snowball, it starts small, but with regular ‘rolls’, builds in size and momentum (especially if downhill!)

- action steps are NO different.

BUILDING A NEW HABIT If you’re looking to create a new daily habit of some kind, it’s MUCH easier, mentally and physically, to action it into your day immediately after something you already do habitually.

So let’s say you’re going to start your exercise regime, with 5 press-ups and 10 squats every day, and double in week two. Pick something you do habitually; you might say: “Right, I clean my teeth twice a day, the moment I’ve finished that I’m doing my press-ups and squats!” Job done, twice a day!

2) Protein breakfast Carbs have been on the menu the last month, and the excess has contributed to how you currently feel. Add in protein (meat, fish, eggs etc) to help regulate blood sugar levels and therefore energy 3) Start small Like I said above, just START! 5 min jog, 15min walk, 5 minute workout. The important thing is mentally and physically starting, to break that resistance barrier 4) Get it out!

Alcohol out of the fridge, mince pies etc out the cupboard. If it’s convenient, it’s available - on reflection, you’ve surely had enough?!

5) Set yourself a 10-day cut off If what you’ve planned isn’t happening after 10 days, reassess what or how you’re doing something, don’t keep repeating the same things.

COMMUNITY FOUNDATION FOR SURREY TRANSFORMING LOCAL COMMUNITIES

Phil Kemp discovers what a real difference this charitable organisation is making on the ground throughout the county.

M

y visit to meet Director of Philanthropy Joe Crome and Victoria Kear, their Communications Officer, at the Community Foundation’s offices in Guildford was intended to help me learn more about how they are ‘transforming local communities’ as their slogan clearly states. Probably in common with many Surrey residents, I wasn’t really aware of exactly what the charity was set up to achieve – and I certainly wasn’t prepared for some of the hard facts I was to face which makes their work literally lifechanging.

Launched in 2005, the Community Foundation for Surrey, which forms part of a network of 46 community foundations across the UK, has undoubtedly made a real difference having granted over £9 million to worthy Surrey causes since it was founded.

“Essentially we were set up by a group of people who believed that Surrey does have

needs, it does have issues, and we have charities that need to be resourced and supported,” Joe explained. “So we’re part of a national movement for philanthropy and we are one of the newer foundations.”

“A lot of people don’t know there is so much need in Surrey which is seen as quite an affluent area and it wasn’t until I started working here that I really started to learn about the pockets of deprivation within the county,” added Victoria.

The foundation provides a lot of resources online that clearly explain the depth and breadth of their activities, but it wasn’t until I was to learn first hand how they engage with communities and groups across the county that I realised just what a big difference they are making on the ground. And I found some of the key reasons for their funding support for local groups quite disturbing.

One of the groups supported by the foundation is yourSanctuary, which runs therapeutic groups for women who have suffered abuse, and who also provide support through their ‘Freedom Programme’ to help the abused gain confidence to improve the quality of their lives and keep themselves and their children safer.

“Surrey also has a really high number of young carers with an estimated 40,000 in the county. As an example of what groups do that we support, The Mayor of Guildford is currently working on an initiative in the town to try and find young carers that go under the radar. They do lots of caring duties in their everyday life that are not recognised.

There are lots of them. It is really shocking.”

Supported groups working in this sector include Crossroads Care Surrey and Surrey Young Carers.

We could very easily have sat together over multiple coffees covering groups in every sector that the foundation is involved in – including the recently launched Surrey Mental Health Fund which initially is focused on young people. Action has been triggered by recent statistics that found 50% of mental health problems are established by the time a child reaches the age of 14, and that 70% of people who have mental health problems said that they had no early intervention support. Both Joe and Victoria are extremely confident that they will beat their fund-raising targets – and having been privileged to witness the passion both of them share in what they do I don’t doubt it.

So how does fundraising and funding work? And again I was to be impressed with the way the Foundation operates.

“Fundraising is primarily through wordof-mouth and referrals,” Joe explained.

“What we offer is a really good bespoke service for donors who are looking to give their money effectively in a tax efficient way, and without all the hassle that can come with giving and running your own charitable trusts. We have lots of individual families that come and start their own funds with us. So it’s very similar to them having their own charitable trust but it’s without the need for them having an accountant and all of the other formalities you will need.

We are just helping them make it happen.” The foundation also works closely with lots of businesses who are keen to engage with local communities and to help make a difference. One example is Gatwick Airport that supports Surrey projects local to them, and another is this very magazine – when VantagePoint ran a free profile of the Community Foundation a couple of years ago, they received a substantial donation from one of our readers.

One key element around which the foundation is built is encompassed in their slogan ‘Transforming local communities with the power of philanthropy’.

“Philanthropy is all about giving,” said Joe. “And it’s not necessarily just giving money, it’s also giving your time and your resources. I think the lens that I see philanthropy through is about helping connect people in a meaningful way to groups they might not otherwise know about, and then helping to make sure that they know that their money will be used effectively and make a real difference.”

It would be totally impossible for me to encompass every aspect of the combined scope of all of the groups the foundation supports as it is truly all embracing. I featured some of the groups that Joe and Victoria highlighted January 2019

primarily because of the sheer emotional impact I had experienced when discussing them. But there are of course a great many more that are doing equally outstanding things in communities all across the county – and a visit to the Community Foundation for Surrey’s website or social media pages will give you a very good idea.

But above all be sure to spread the word about this very important charity which is there to help everyone throughout the county. They deserve our support.

And the last word should be left to Victoria when I asked how much she enjoys working at the Foundation, hinted at by her endless enthusiasm during our discussions. “It’s great! You get out to meet the people we have funded and worked with, and also our lovely donors. Reading through feedback forms we have online really brings home the positive impact we are making. It’s lovely to see the difference we are making.”

Cheap but tasty eats

So it is January and you have no money and need to limit your calorie intake after Christmas. Try these cheap but tasty ideas, all using our favourite vegetable, the humble potato! Recipes taken from www.lovepotatoes.co.uk.

North African Spiced Baked Eggs with Potato

shredded (weight after stalks removed), 100g ham hock (or other cooked ham/bacon), shredded, 50g medium cheese, grated (such as Gruyere or emmental) and a poached egg (optional). For the sauce: 1tbsp white wine vinegar, 1tsp grainy mustard and 1tsp Dijon mustard. Serves 2-3.

Method:

Ingredients:

2 large pre-boiled fluffy potatoes (such as Maris Piper), cubed when cool, 1 small pinch of saffron (optional), 2tbsp of olive oil, 1 small red onion, thinly sliced, 1 clove of garlic chopped, 1tsp ground cumin, 4 medium tomatoes, roughly chopped, 4 eggs, 1 small bunch coriander (25g), sprinkle of chilli flakes to serve and 2 tbsp of yoghurt. Serves 2-4.

Method:

1. Preheat the oven to 200°C/180°C fan. If using, infuse the saffron in a couple of tablespoons of warm water.

2. Heat the oil in a small (24cm) frying pan.

3. Fry the onions, garlic and cumin over a low heat until the onions are soft for about 10 minutes. Add the pre-boiled potatoes and turn the heat up, mix to incorporate, then add the tomatoes (and saffron water if using). Season well and cook for a further 5 minutes, occasionally stirring (add a splash of water if the mixture is drying up and sticking). Season to taste.

4. Using a wooden spoon make 4 shallow wells in the mix and break the eggs into them.

5. Place the pan in the oven and bake until the white of the eggs are cooked and the yolk still looks a little runny (for about 5-10 minutes).

6. Let it sit for several minutes, then sprinkle with chopped coriander, yoghurt and chilli flakes.

One Pan Ham Hock and Kale Hash

1. Cook the potatoes in boiled salted water and allow to cool before halving. Season well with salt and black pepper. Heat a large frying pan over a high heat. Slide the potatoes in, spread out and resist the urge to move them about until they’re nice and crispy.

2. When all sides have crisped up, remove from the pan, turn the temperature down and add the onion, garlic and rosemary and cook for 4 minutes until softened.

3. Add the kale, then cook for another 5 minutes before returning the potatoes to the pan, along with the ham hock. Turn the temperature up to high. When the pan is hot, add the sauce and cheese and toss to coat everything. As soon as the liquid has evaporated, turn the heat off and serve.

4. Add a poached egg if desired.

Patatas Bravas with Chorizo in Red Wine Sauce

Ingredients:

350g new potatoes, roughly cubed, 150g cooking chorizo, cut into 1cm cubes, 100ml red wine, 400g tinned chopped tomatoes, 1 white onion, medium, sliced, 1 garlic, crushed, 1 red chilli, sliced, 2-3tsp chilli flakes, salt and pepper and 2tbsp olive oil. Serves 4.

Method:

400g salad potatoes (such as Charlotte), halved or Maris Pipers cubed, ½ onion, chopped, 1 garlic, chopped, 1 twig rosemary, needles removed and finely chopped, 80g kale,

1. Boil the potatoes for 6-8 minutes until softening.

Drain and leave to cool.

2. Fry the chorizo in a sauté pan until starting to crisp then add the potatoes. Cook until golden, transfer to a bowl and set aside.

3. Sauté the onion and garlic, add the wine and reduce.

Add the chilli flakes and stir.

4. Add the tomatoes, cook for fifteen minutes on a gentle heat. Pour over the potatoes and chorizo and sprinkle with chopped fresh parsley.

Black cabs are going green Andy Goundry looks at the iconic black cab as it goes green...

he black cab is a world-famous London icon: convenient, functional, and a common sight on London’s roads. Unfortunately, though, their diesel engines are a major source of pollution. That’s why London’s Mayor announced that from 1st January 2018 all new taxis must be diesel-free and able to run entirely on electric power for a minimum of 30 miles.

China has ambitions of becoming the dominant player in electric vehicles, a target which is well on the way to being achieved. For example, whilst London presently has under 200 electric buses in service, one Chinese city alone – Shenzen – has over 16,000!

Geely, the Chinese company who own Volvo, have invested over £325 million in a new Coventry-based business, London Electric Vehicle Company, or LEVC, which has developed a groundbreaking new electric cab, the TX e-City.

All the electric drive parts are tucked away out of sight.

Sensibly, in view of the iconic appearance of the traditional black cab, the new e-City is visually almost identical, but under that familiar skin lies a radically different product.

After analysing how a cab is used by its driver and passengers, LEVC have brought it right up to date. For example, in a traditional cab, wheelchair space is tight, so the e-City has an extra 200mm of wheelbase. Coupled with a lower floor, wider opening doors and a higher roofline, this gives a simple, practical layout for both wheelchair users and able-bodied passengers alike.

Creature comforts have not been forgotten either; the passenger compartment features a mains power socket for laptops, USB charging points and on-board WiFi, all topped off with a huge panoramic roof.

The driving compartment has been brought right up to date using Volvo parts such as the driver’s seat, the central 9” touch screen and a digital instrument panel, all suitably revised to incorporate specific taxi features. By piggy-backing Volvo’s development investment in this technology, the cab driver benefits

significantly, the previous cab being distinctly agricultural in comparison. The new cab also uses Volvo’s latest worldleading accident avoidance technology.

A 31kWh battery pack is mounted under the front floor, which powers the electric motor. The battery can be topped up when necessary using one of the two fitted fast charging ports. Between them, these cater for most types of charging connections. The cab also has a Volvo 1.5 litre ‘range extender’ petrol engine for use where no external charging is available.

Every component used in the cab has been tested using a specially-developed ‘TaxiDur’ test where components undergo test cycles ten to twenty times longer than for a typical passenger car. Over a million miles of durability proving has been carried out, in all climate conditions, with final testing completed last year in London.

The average cabbie lives outside central London, drives daily into the city and then covers typically 100-120 miles of fare-carrying duties before heading home at the end of a shift. The new cab is therefore designed around this duty cycle. Typically, the cabbie will charge their e-City overnight at home, driving into town in the morning using petrol January 2019

power, and switching to electric running on arrival into the city. With a battery range of up to 80 miles, the cab will easily get to lunchtime without needing recharging. A lunchtime fast charge will then top up the battery, providing ample power for the rest of the day. To cope with the occasional long-distance job, the cab can switch when necessary to petrol power, its 35-litre fuel tank giving it a range of almost 300 miles.

The e-City cab will soon become a common sight not only in London but also around the world. The first international orders have already been shipped, whilst Paris has also recently announced plans to take the new cab.

The battery is covered by a classleading five-year warranty. However, with sophisticated battery management on board, LEVC's engineers confidently expect a 15-year battery life.

Although around £10,000 more expensive than the outgoing diesel cab, the average driver should save £100 a week by moving to the new vehicle. LEVC reckon the e-City should at least break even over a typical 5-year ownership period compared to a traditional diesel cab.

Although about 600 of the impressive e-City cabs are now operating in London, uptake has been slower than expected, due not least to the very authorities who are calling for a significant reduction in emissions. While TfL are providing many new rapid charge points for electric cabs, they are apparently expensive to use – 22p per kWh, compared to 10-12p for domestic electricity. Also, the rumoured impending road use charging which could replace falling fuel duty revenue may make electric vehicle operation more expensive. Given these uncertainties over running costs, many cabbies are adopting a ‘wait-and-see’ attitude.

So, TfL and Government, if you really want to reduce the pollution levels of our streets and see all of the 21,000 strong London cab fleet electrified, the ball is in your court!

Make Planting fruit your New Year's Resolution

I

relish the opportunities that each season offers us.

January provides the chance to pause and rest, take stock of our plants and introduce new plants to delight us over the years ahead!

This is the perfect time to plant trees, hedging plants, roses, and soft fruit: plants that are lifted during the dormant season and sold bare root; the plants’ roots are coated in wax or wrapped, to prevent desiccation. Bare-rooted plants are more economical to purchase, this is also a more environmentally-friendly way of growing and purchasing plants. Plants that are sold bare root are grown in the field, not in containers, so these growers don’t need to use plastic and less water is required to irrigate the field grown plants.

Mycorrhizal fungi are found naturally in our soils. These beneficial fungi form symbiotic relationships, or partnerships with plants. Mycorrhizal fungi help plants to develop more extensive root systems than a plant could otherwise achieve on its own, enabling the plant to establish itself quickly and access more nutrients and water from a wider area, which greatly benefits the plant; in exchange, the fungi receive sugars and carbon

from the plant. You can harness these benefits by purchasing concentrated amounts of mycorrhizal fungi to apply to the roots of your plants at planting time.

Unwrap your bare root plants and soak their roots in a bucket full of water overnight. Apply the mycorrhizal fungi to your plant’s roots and plant in prepared ground that has been thoroughly weeded. Delay planting if the ground is frozen; keep your plants wrapped and store in a cool, frost-free porch, shed or garage prior to planting.

Plant breeders have worked intensively for many years to develop all manner of fruit varieties that can be grown in containers. Look out for ‘Yummy’ and ‘Ruby Beauty’ raspberries. These plants are smaller in size, making them ideal for container growing.

If you have room to plant in the ground, make the most of your opportunity, forget those two varieties, and opt instead for: ‘Malling Minerva’, an early season raspberry whose fruit are held on smooth, spineless canes, ‘Tulameen’, a Canadian bred, heavy cropping, late summer fruiting raspberry that produces large, red fruit, ‘All Gold’ a yellow fruited, autumn raspberry, and ‘Polka’ which produces beautiful, shiny red fruit in autumn. Just a few canes of each of these raspberries will produce a surprisingly large, delicious harvest, produced over a long season. Raspberries are very productive; they’re fabulous plants to grow!

A ‘family tree’ is a single fruit tree that features two or more varieties grafted onto the same stem, so some branches may produce red apples, others green. Family apple, pear, cherry, and plum trees allow you to grow a wider range of fruit in a small space. Varieties that blossom at the same time are grafted onto the same stem to enable successful pollination.

WEEKEND WALK

Crondall and its countryside This is an easy walk to get the new year started, only 5 miles and completely flat. It is also very charming, with some lovely, farreaching views of the local countryside. At its beginning and end, it has the lovely village of Crondall to explore, with its AngloSaxon roots and some rather lovely historic buildings, including a great Norman church and a 500-year-old pub. There are no nettles to speak of on this walk and very little undergrowth. One of the field paths (despite being along the edge) is rather stony and you may be glad to be wearing boots. There are just two stiles, not well enough built to present any obstacle to your dog.

1. With the church and churchyard on your left, walk along the tarmac lane, passing the village hall, to reach Crondall’s main recreation ground / playing field. Turn right into the ground and go left along the edge. (Strictly, the official footpath is a little further along the road on the right going behind the tennis court but no one seems to use it.) Now veer diagonally right (keeping to the edge if there is cricket in progress!) to pass the tennis courts on your left and continue a little further to a gap in the tree hedge. (See map below.) Go through the gap and veer right to come out into a crop field. Take a path diagonally across the field to reach a junction of tarmac roads.

2. Avoid the side road sharp left, veer left on the major road and, in 30m, at a fingerpost, go right over a wooden bridge into a crop field. Turn left along the edge. The edge elbows left and leads you to a tarmac lane. Turn right on the lane. Where, in 100m, the lane bends right, go right for 20m and then left at a fingerpost onto a path along the right-hand side of a large field. This path goes under power lines and, shortly after, the boundary hedge on your right ends. Keep ahead here, curving slightly left, in a wide arc, on a path between fields.

The crop here is usually tall wheat but it will be only stubble after reaping. Your path suddenly ends at a marker post. Turn squarely right here, heading for some trees, and when you reach the trees, turn left at another marker post, close to the trees on your right. Looking back, you can see the tower of Crondall church.

3. Your path ends at an oak wood. Turn left alongside the wood and, in 25m, go right at a fingerpost on a pleasant path just inside the wood. After 300m, you reach a farm track with a metal gate on your left.

Go right for 15m and left over a stile into woods.

Your path goes immediately left, wheels right and meanders through this strangely thin oak wood in a more-or-less straight direction. On your right soon are the twin peaks of Horsedown Common with a trig pillar on top. Keep straight on for the length of this sheep pasture, past scattered thorn bushes, with the dividing fence close by on your left. You come through a marshy patch caused by underground springs but a boardwalk keeps you dry shod. Immediately after the boardwalk, go left to a small wooden gate with a yellow arrow. Go over the stile beside the gate (which is wired up). The stile is wobbly and can easily break, so tread gently!

4. The path curves right through a woodland of hawthorn and young beech. After 250m or so, you come out to the corner of a large field. Keep straight ahead along the right-hand edge and, at the far side, veer right and immediately left to meet a wide gravel track. Turn left on the track which soon becomes quite dark as it enters trees and turns stony. After 500m on this track, just as you see it curving right ahead, look to your right for some steps and a fingerpost. Go right up the steps and take a path straight across a crop field on a faint path. (In case the field is recently ploughed, aim for the centre of a large rounded tree.) At the far side, by a marker post, turn left along the edge of the field. Stay on the edge of the field, curving right and left, all the way (about 600m) to reach a tarmac lane with farm building opposite.

5. Turn left on this quiet lane, passing an irrelevant junction on your right, until you reach the start of some woodland, immediately after passing under power lines. Turn right here at a fingerpost on a path into the wood. The path runs parallel to the lane you were on. At the end of the wood, turn right along the right-hand side of a field with great views.

When you reach another wood after 400m, take a path straight ahead into the wood, as indicated by a yellow arrow. Follow a path just inside the wood

“valley” or “pit” and present-day golfers sometimes lose their balls in one of them. The village lies right on the boundary of the sedimentary London basin and the chalky uplands (where this walk is sited). The name is remembered by archaeologists as the place where in 1828 the teenage Charles Lefroy was out shooting when he noticed a heap of metal pieces. They turned out to be a

for 200m to a T-junction by a marker post. Turn left here on a wide dusty track. In 200m, as you approach a field, ignore a narrow footpath on your left and take a farm track straight ahead between fields.

6. The track curves right and, after a total of 450m, reaches a T-junction with direction arrows. Turn left on this wide track, with your final destination in sight. This easy track zigzags and, after a total of 700m, brings you to a junction of tracks by farm buildings. Turn right and, after a metal gate, keep straight ahead on a tarmac lane. Within 200m, you are back in the village of Crondall where the walk began.

Hardy Plant Society - Southern Counties Group

November. Usually these are in the mornings, but this year the April meeting is in the afternoon.

There is a varied programme of talks on many aspects of plants, gardens and gardening, with the opportunity to improve knowledge and skills.

Visitors are welcome to come along. In the summer months members enjoy a programme of garden visits – this year across Surrey, Sussex, Essex and Berkshire. This summer there will also be a 3-day trip to Somerset and Wiltshire to visit gardens further afield.

T

he Hardy Plant Society is a national charity whose particular interest is hardy herbaceous perennials, and the Southern Counties Group is the local group covering Surrey and South London.

Membership allows participation in not only our own activities but those of the national society.

The group holds meetings once a month at Bookham’s Old Barn Hall (55 Church Road, Great Bookham, Leatherhead KT23 3PQ) on Saturdays from January until April and then October and

New members of all ages and gardening experience, from beginners to experts, are welcome; all that is needed is a love of plants and gardens.

The doors are opened at 10am and free tea and coffee are served. At 10.15am there is usually a plant sale where you can buy good quality homegrown plants at very competitive prices. In addition, there is a range of garden sundries, HPS booklets and second-hand gardening books to buy, and a raffle. At about 10.45am, the chairman will officially start the meeting and a guest speaker will talk for about 1 hour followed by a question-and-answer session.

Visitors are welcome, costing £4 to come in. For those who join at the meeting, half is refunded.

Members pay £2 to attend meetings or contribute two home grown plants.

Leatherhead Community Association walks First and second Wednesday of each month Non-members are welcome to all these events and your first walk is free with a ÂŁ3 charge for each subsequent walk. They are designed to be gentle and at modest pace, with few stiles, and easy gradients. Capel Choral Society - new year, new season Monday 7th January Capel Choral thanks all those who joined it for a pre-Christmas celebration at the beginning of December and hopes you enjoyed the concert as much as did the singers. Richard Taylor Jones at Newdigate Community Centre Saturday 16th February The Trustees of Newdigate Community Centre are very excited that Richard Taylor Jones has agreed to come and give a talk in the Village Hall. Richard appears regularly on BBC Countryfile, The One Show, Coast and Springwatch and he uses his expertise as a wildlife film maker, cameraman and photographer to capture images of some of the best of British Wildlife. He loves working on screen with contributors and is own, as is more just as comfortable holding the show on his often the case than not. He first came to recognition with his 'Cinematic Landscape Films' which he authored and shot for BBC Springwatch. Richard’s talk will be entitled ‘Filming the Wild’, which he expects to last for 90 minutes and will feature some of his short films and photography. There will be time for questions afterwards. GUTS Motor Tour 2019 – save the date!

Sunday 23rd September This motor tour for veteran, vintage and classic cars raises money for GUTS at the Royal Surrey County Hospital. GUTS seeks to raise awareness of bowel cancer, which affects around one in eighteen of us at some point in our lives, and provides funding for research to advance screening and detection and also improve the care, treatment and outcomes for patients from right across the south of England. The tour runs annually and covers around 60 miles around the wider local area with a picnic stop at a lovely venue at the end. It has raised in excess of £18,000 since 2014.
