The swimming pool, such a hit with the boy last year, beckons and now has built-in steps, which means he can exit whenever he wants, rather than having to rely on me putting down my glass to pull him out. Elstead Afternoon Women’s Institute Thursday 1st September 2.15pm Mrs Susan Howe will speak about ‘History Minus The Boring Bits’ at Elstead Village Hall. Why not go along and join them; they have some excellent speakers lined up for this year including Mr Ashley Smith from the Hawk Conservancy Trust in October. Their Annual Meeting plus a Quiz on Antiques, takes place in November. Would you consider becoming their new President? Helen is due to retire after three years of sterling service and will take over as Secretary.

Heritage Open Days offers free access to buildings which are normally closed to the public with tours and events which bring local history to life. Visitors to Godalming in 2016 may see just a sleepy little town by the river but the town has had a varied history from its Saxon origins through its wool trade, framework knitting, and leather processing plus being a major coaching stop on the London to Portsmouth road. With the coming of the railway this trade was lost, but the town grew with housing for London commuters. During the 18th and 19th centuries, Godalming was more like a northern mill town with a big industrial presence and a large number of non-conformist religions catering for the workers.

Designed by local architect John Perry, it has survived several attempts to knock it down for road improvements and has become the “trademark” of Godalming. The seat of the town’s politics until the present council offices were built in 1908, it then became the town Museum until that moved over the road in 1987. The house was designed by architects Buckland and Hay-wood Farmer and has been said to be “the most ambitious house undertaken by the partners and is arguably one of the finest large houses produced by the Birmingham movement”. Plaster work is by Catterson-Smith Jnr. Visitors will be able to see the gardens, originally laid out by Gertrude Jekyll, but since substantially altered.

QUAKER MEETING HOUSE THE MINT, MILL LANE The Society of Friends, or Quakers as they are known, has a long history in the Godalming area. Less than two miles away, in Binscombe, is a Quaker Burial Ground used from 1695 to 1720 and Fox’s Barn, so called because the Society’s founder, George Fox, preached here in 1655. 2014 was the tercentenary of the Meeting Room , built from the ruins of a cottage called Goreways in 1714. The other building, originally a stable, is believed to date from the 1600s. There will be a display on the theme of conscientious objection.

JOTTINGS - YOUR LOCAL COMMUNITY NOTICEBOARD Ewhurst CE Infant School joins the Surrey Hills Cow Parade Saturday 3rd September Children at Ewhurst CE Infant School have taken part in the Surrey Hills CowParade, the world’s largest public art event. Each child has helped to transform a half-size ‘Mini Moo’ cow into a beautiful piece of art which they have named Rainbow. Rainbow has spent the summer “grazing” at local department store ‘Manns of Cranleigh’. On Saturday 3rd she can be seen at the Surrey Hills Festival of Food & Drink, Coverwood Farm, Ewhurst where raffle tickets will be on sale to win her with the proceeds helping meet a £150,000 fundraising target, set up to pay for a brand new teaching and community facility at the school. This is just one fundraising initiative underway at Ewhurst CE Infant School, who celebrated their 170 year anniversary this year.

RHS Wisley Flower Show Tuesday 6th to Sunday 11th September This is the last major event in the UK flower show year and returns with 75 nurseries and garden tradestands offering their wares, including 17 for the first time. If you fancy ditching the car, you could choose to travel by train to Horsley station. They are running a free shuttle service to and from the station every 20 minutes during opening hours and what’s more, if you do travel by train you get a 25% reduction on your entrance fee!

2. Chainsaw Carving Demonstrations The ever popular Tree Pirates return to the Surrey Hills Wood Fair with their amazing skills and engaging personalities. Watch this dynamic team of chainsaw artists captivate their audience and create wooden sculptures of any size – not to be missed!

3. The Man in the Moon Theatre Tent The Man In The Moon Theatre Tent returns. You’ll be entertained by various artists who will be performing a series of themed shows and workshops throughout both days. As well as watching, children will have the opportunity to get up on stage and take part in the performances.

4. Live Music Entertainment is big on the agenda and we have a host of local bands performing throughout the two day event, co-ordinated by the Academy of Contemporary Music (ACM) in Guildford.

We’ve got acoustic busking areas throughout the site as well as a main stage where you can see top quality performances from local musicians. Also returning will be the Surrey Hills Ukulele Big Band who will again perform on the main stage and whilst moving around the fair on a Horse and Wagon!

5. Steam Powered Saw Mill The Wood Fair wouldn’t be the same without the awe inspiring large scale machinery used within the wood industry. This year we have something really special for steam enthusiasts – a 1926 steam powered saw mill! Come and watch it in action slicing up large logs. To bring us up to date, Jas P Wilson will be showcasing today’s modern machinery and demonstrating how it is used to manage our woodlands. The Rural Life Centre will be on hand with historical facts and their fine collection of tools used throughout the ages by foresters.

6. Animal Attractions The ever popular Horse and Wagon rides make a welcome return and will take you on a gentle circuit of the site. You’ll also be able to see horses at work and the traditional art of horse logging. The heavy horses will amaze you with their strength

Surrey Hills Trust Fund Profits made from the Wood Fair will help to support the Surrey Hills Trust Fund which has been established in partnership with the Community Foundation for Surrey to help conserve and enhance the Surrey Hills landscape.

The fund provides grants to support projects, programmes and activities that benefit the Surrey Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and ensure our countryside is enjoyed by generations to come. One project the Surrey Hills Trust Fund has recently supported is the Leatherhead Youth Project (LYP) who help local young people to make safe, happy, resilient, and positive changes in their lives and in their community.

The LYP took a group of young people out into the Surrey Hills to do Forest School Survival Skills training, which involved building shelters, camp fires and learning how to forage for food, as well as outdoor team building. They also did a mountain bike course on Leith Hill, learning how to navigate the trails, understand the environment and work together.

The aim was to offer a unique outdoor learning experience to young people who may not always get the opportunity, helping them engage with the Surrey Hills countryside and boosting confidence and learning.

Ancient woodland has particular significance in terms of historic and nature conservation importance and the Surrey Hills boasts over 4500 hectares of ancient woodland covering 12% of the AONB. The Woodland Trust, Surrey Wildlife Trust, Merrist Wood, Plumpton College and the Surrey Hills Society will all be on hand to give advice on woodland management, conservation and wildlife as well as providing great ideas for how you can get out and enjoy woodland. Kids can take part in activities by Willows Forest School as well as ‘Down in the Woods’ bush craft who will be doing open fire cookery demonstrations.

Children’s Activities There’s a big focus on families this year with lots on offer for children ranging from tree climbing and a zip wire to storytelling, face painting, craft making, archery and much much more... In the centre of the Birtley Estate is a lake, why not take a gentle ride around the Birtley lake in a wooden canoe or take part in some pond dipping!

9. Local Produce Discover a whole host of interesting stalls to browse and buy from including some great local produce. Cranleigh Sub Aqua Club They are a local, friendly club formed in 1977, with 40 plus members. They have nationally qualified Instructors training to British Sub Aqua Club standards. CSAC offers something for everyone, from free try dives to skills development courses.

After 7.30pm pool training on a Tuesday evening at Cranleigh School Pool, they meet at the Cranleigh Village Sports and Social Club for a chat and to organise the weeks diving. Newcomers and divers from other agencies, as well as divers returning to the sport are all welcome. In 2016 they have the usual club RIB day trips along the South coast, as well as a week’s diving on the Isle of Man, and a long weekend at Hope Cove in Devon. In October, club members usually enjoy a week’s diving in the Red Sea. The main events of their social calendar are the Summer BBQ and the Christmas Dinner Dance and Awards Night when seven trophies, awarded annually, are up for grabs. Why choose a prep school?

As a parent, choosing a school has to be one of the most significant decisions that you will make for your child. They may also have science laboratories, drama and dance studios, design technology workshops, art studios and music rooms.

Specialist teaching Often prep schools have subject specialist teachers rather than generalist class teachers. At Barrow Hills our French teachers work with children from Nursery (age 2-3) to Year 8 and games teachers work with children from Kindy (age 3-4) to Year 8.

This means that the children experience a variety of learning techniques and forge strong relationships with a range of teachers. A prep school usually includes a wider range of subjects, such as languages, drama and music, with a broader range of musical instrument lessons to try.

Works for working parents In today’s world it is the norm for both parents to be working. Generally, traditional school hours simply don’t match those of the average working day. Prep schools are more likely to accommodate the child care needs of working parents, allowing a stress-free and seamless transition from home to school, without having to make complicated arrangements involving other child care providers.

At Barrow Hills for example, the day starts at 8am with a breakfast club. Any child can go home as late as 6pm; the older children can do their homework and the younger ones relax by playing a quiet game. And there is a healthy snack to keep hungry tummies happy until dinner time!

Communication At prep school parents are invited to parent consultations two or three times per year and can expect three written reports, keeping them informed about their child’s progress and achievements. We are able to spend more time talking with you regularly about how your child is progressing and about her or his academic and pastoral needs.

Exam Preparation Prep schools put preparation for examinations in the context of a broad and balanced education. They will often prepare children for exams by offering guidance on the correct exam technique rather than teaching to the test, often the approach with SATS. There are of course always exceptions to this rule so be sure to find out more about a prep school’s policy on this when you visit.

Repetitive Injuries and Joint Pain in Children and Adolescents Nikki Browning BSc (hons) MCSP MAACP Clinical Specialist Physiotherapist sport and over use their quadriceps muscles. It often happens at the beginning of a rapid growth spurt.

Sports participation promotes the physical and emotional well-being of children and also encourages the lifelong habit of exercise. Although the benefits of athletic activity are significant, it is extremely important that children do lots of regular stretching to prevent injury and pain.

Overuse injuries occur gradually over time when an athletic activity is repeated so often, areas of the body do not have enough time to heal between playing. For example, overhead bowling in cricket can be associated with injuries to the shoulder and spine and football is often associated with injuries to the knee.

Severs - is a common overuse injury in children; with pain in the heel where the Achilles tendon inserts.

Again this especially occurs in physically active children who play lots of sport. It usually occurs during adolescent growth spurts and is only temporary; but if persistent then physiotherapy can help.

Many overuse injuries in children can be prevented.

The key to prevention is to avoid overdoing any single sport, doing regular stretching and giving growing bodies adequate rest between practices or games.

Overuse injuries can affect muscles, ligaments, tendons, bones and growth plates. In children, these structures are still growing and the growth is generally uneven. Bones grow first which pulls at tight muscles and tendons. This uneven growth pattern makes younger athletes more susceptible to muscle, tendon, and growth plate injuries.

Muscles and tendons adapt to stressâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s how they become stronger. But they also need to rest and rebuild between the episodes of stress. With an overuse injury the muscle or tendon receives the stress but never gets a chance to rest.

Growth plates are the areas of developing cartilage where bone growth occurs in children. The growth plates are weaker than the nearby ligaments and tendons. Repetitive stress can lead to injury of the growth plate and disrupt the normal growth of the bone.

Surrey Hills Challenge Sunday 25th September The Surrey Hills Challenge encompasses both walkers and runners with the choice of a 60km, 21km, 10km and 5km route. The event is being organised to establish a successful outdoor event in the beautiful Surrey Hills and to assist with the fundraising of The Community Foundation for Surrey and The Surrey Hills Trust Fund. The family events of ‘The Five’ and ‘The Ten’ will take place at Hurtwood, a well-known area for walkers and runners and start at 10am. A Neighbourhood Plan for Godalming & Farncombe

Things are moving fast on the Neighbourhood Plan front. With the recent publication of Waverley Borough Council’s draft Local Plan, Godalming & Farncombe’s Neighbourhood Plan volunteers are drawing their evidence together and drafting the plan for our community. Don’t forget that if you want to respond to Waverley’s draft then you must respond to Waverley and do so soon – check their website for details.

The Neighbourhood Plan has to plan for whatever housing numbers Waverley says our community should accommodate – if those numbers change then the Neighbourhood Plan will realign in response to that. What is emerging from the neighbourhood plan process is that rather than argue about numbers we want to influence the size and type of housing that is built in Godalming and to work on ways of improving the movement of traffic around our community.

Godalming Musical Firework Extravaganza Friday, 4 November ‘Music of the Movies’ After many years of dedicated work, the Godalming & Villages Lions have retired from organising the town’s annual bonfire. On behalf of the community, Godalming Town Council would like to thank the Lions for so many years of enjoyment.

Friday, 4 November will now see a new and exciting firework event for Godalming (but no bonfire). The Rotary Clubs of Godalming, the Round Table and the 41 Club, along with Godalming Town Council, supported by Waverley Borough Council, are delighted to host a great family fun event with a torch-lit procession, funfair and fireworks. Plus hotdogs and burgers, candyfloss, mulled wine, a beer tent, tea, coffee and hot chocolate will all be available to purchase on the night.

The firework and funfair site will open at 6.30pm and the firework display will be set off at 8pm. Why not be-

gin the evening by taking part in the torch-lit procession? The procession starts from the bottom of Church Street. Torches will be available to buy from 6.30pm and at 7.15pm, the procession will set off via the High Street, for the Burys. Once the procession arrives at The Burys the fireworks will dance to the ‘music of the movies’.

The only place to see and hear all the firework show will be on The Burys field.

This will be a great evening by the community for the community. Only those on The Burys field will be able to see the fireworks ‘dancing to the music’.

Godalming Air Cadets is 75 Years Old

1951, there is nothing in writing in the 1254 archive to record any other events until the 30th October 1960.

A programme of events to mark the official opening of the new HQ in the grounds of the TA Centre in Hallam Road, Farncombe confirms the beginning of the current chapter in the Squadron’s history.

Did you know that 1254 Godalming Squadron Air Training Corps (ATC) has been in the town for 75 years?

According to extracts from the diaries of Gilbert Streeter, 1254 Squadron came into existence in late March 1941, which, if indeed the case, would make it one of the first squadrons to be formed after the official establishment of the ATC. The Air Training Corps is a national youth organisation for young men and women between the ages of 12 and 18 years of age.

It has close ties with the Royal Air Force and provides exciting and structured activities for both male and female cadets.

Initially the Squadron was based at the County Grammar School, with the use of the Y.M.C.A’s Bridge Street offices, and was formed to serve Godalming and surrounding villages away from Guildford. A short while later it moved to Meadrow Central School where the Headmaster did everything possible to help and make welcome the Squadron. It was not until June 17th 1941 that uniforms arrived. The initial Squadron had two flights ‘A’, the country or villages and ‘B’ the town (Godalming).

Today Godalming Squadron is going from strength to strength, we have around 25 cadets with a good mix of both male and females. We are a very active squadron and our cadets are taking part in many activities including, flying, gliding, shooting, adventure training, camps on RAF Stations and the Duke of Edinburgh awards scheme to name a few.

Recently they took 12 cadets away to the Isle of Wight for Adventure Training and to qualify their Bronze D of E cadets for their expedition. It was a great success and already the cadets are talking about what to do next.

The Prostate Project For the past couple of years, this Guildford based charity has run a sponsored beard-growing event, OctoBeardFest, during the month of October. They ask all men to ditch their razor during October and grow a beard to raise awareness and money for their cancer research team based at the University of Surrey.

These are exciting times in the battle against prostate cancer as they are developing a urine test to detect prostate cancer accurately and quickly, the first breakthrough test since the 30 year old PSA test. 11,000 men die in the UK from prostate cancer, but if detected early, most of these lives can be saved so this is hugely important work. GARDENING An Inca Garden at Hampton Court

so they were really keen to have a public entrance – during the show, people will be able to go in and out, which I really like.

BO: Yes, it’s wonderful to see a Show Garden that visitors to the show can access, and really experience themselves.

JJ: The thing I like about the garden is that it’s colourful. It’s a fun garden, and I hope it’ll inspire people.

Journey Latin America’s Inca Garden at the RHS Hampton Court Palace Flower Show has been designed to convey a sense of adventure and travel to its visitors. The Inca Garden reflects the experiences of American explorer Hiram Bingham, who discovered the ‘lost’ Inca citadel of Machu Picchu, high in the Peruvian Andes, in 1911.

BO: I am sure your garden will inspire many people. I like your vegetables and your courgettes too.

JJ: They’re all traditional Inca crops.

BO: I have grown all of these vegetables - they are fun to grow. Who built the garden?

I caught up with Jennifer Jones, the designer of Journey Latin America’s Inca Garden, to find out more about this interesting garden, which was designed for the RHS Hampton Court Palace Flower Show.

BO: Hi Jennifer, are you pleased with the garden?

JJ: I am, I’m really pleased with it. Yes! I didn’t know that much about tropical plants before, so it’s been really interesting – I’ve learnt so much. I’ve learnt about whole new sections of plants that I just had no idea about.

BO: How long were you researching the plants for the garden?

JJ: We started researching last October. You have to submit the first designs in December. We’ve got quite a lot of plants that are from South America in the garden. I was really lucky, I found a good nursery, Desert & Jungle in Somerset where I got a lot of my plants.

BO: What will happen to the plants, when the RHS Hampton Court Palace Flower Show finishes?

JJ: I think some of them are going to go back to Desert & Jungle; I’ve also been in touch with The Living Rainforest in Berkshire.

I sent them a list with the plants I have - they’ll have anything we can give them. I’ve designed the garden so that we won’t throw very much away. All the stone is going back to the stone supplier - it can be re-used again, and all the plants are going to go to a good home.

BO: What’s the experience of designing the garden been like?

JJ: Well, Journey Latin America has been a great sponsor of the garden, and it’s been a great opportunity for me, it’s an opportunity I wouldn’t have had otherwise. It’s been a really interesting garden, because JLA are all about visiting countries, 44

JJ: Surrey Hills Landscaping - Mark Leverton, built the garden, they did all the stone. Mark was really good - we had a little blip this morning, he was straight here, helping us out – he was unflappable.

BO: And is there anyone else you’d like to thank?

JJ: I’ve mentioned JLA, who have been great, Rob from Desert & Jungle who has been great with the plants, and my family who have been great as well! My mum has helped out too.

OctoBeardFest is a big success for the Prostate Project. Now in its fourth year, the beard-growing appeal has raised over £200,000 through hundreds of small donations. The money has been donated to the charity’s cancer research team at the University of Surrey. Their highly acclaimed work includes targeted therapies for cancer that kill only cancer cells, leaving normal cells untouched, pioneering research into cancer vaccines and the use of viruses to kill cancer cells. They have also developed a cheap, accurate, diagnostic urine test (EN2) for prostate cancer that is

undergoing a multi-centre clinical trial largely funded

by OctoBeardFest donations.

Cowdray Farm Shop & Café The Farm Shop & Café are the hub of the Cowdray Estate and represent so much of the Estate’s holistic ethos. The sourcing policy is of the highest standard and starts with their own home grown produce. They support local suppliers whenever they are able and source only the very best produce for the store.

The beef comes from the Home Farms and the lambs are grazed on Cowdray land. The Head Butcher is in the enviable position of being able to talk with the farmer about how the animals are reared and the impact that this has on the quality of the meat. Their award winning venison is available from the butcher’s counter, and this meat is perhaps one of their most sustainable food sources. They buy their pork from Scott’s of Storrington who farm their free range pigs a few miles from Cowdray. The team cure cuts of bacon to the Cowdray specific recipe, smoke some in the traditional way and leave the rest green. The team also make the famous Cowdray sausages to several different recipes, none involving any preservatives. Fresh fish from Andrew Johnson and his team is available every Friday between 11.30am-4.00pm.

The Café serves food from 9am to 5pm, from breakfast to sandwiches and snacks, to substantial meals made from scratch using traditional artisan techniques, as well as the best Cowdray and local produce. Cowdray Sweet Greens Juice and Cold Porridges are available to buy from Cowdray’s Juice Bar. 1 bag of spinach; ½ pineapple (flesh only); 1 lemon rind removed; 6 large apples, cored; fresh mint

Handful of raspberries in each tart 1 teaspoon of raspberry jam in each tart

Method: • Blitz in your juicer • Add about 6 leaves of mint to the juice.

Sweet Pastry 200g plain flour; 50g icing sugar; pinch of salt; 250g unsalted butter; 1 egg

Frangipane 150g unsalted butter; 150g ground almonds; 3 medium eggs; 150g caster sugar Serves 4 Method: • Mix flour, salt, butter and icing sugar together to make a fine breadcrumb. Add the egg and roll the pastry out • Cream together the unsalted butter, eggs and caster sugar, then fold in ground almonds • Roll pastry and line a small tart case (hardcase 8cm diameter) and prick bottom with a fork • Cover the bottom of the case with raspberry jam then scatter raspberries in the middle (to your taste, more will make them wetter) • Fill the rest of the cast half way up with the frangipane and bake at 160ºc for 8 minutes or until golden • Top with some good quality vanilla ice cream and serve

Ingredients 100g rolled porridge oats; 150ml semi skimmed milk; 1 tablespoon natural Greek yoghurt; 1 teaspoon maple syrup.

Guildford Shakespeare Company Saturday 8th to Sunday 30th October The final production of their 10th Anniversary Year will be a brand new adaptation of Grimm’s’ Fairy Tales, staged in a stunning Flemish Spiegel Tent. A cast of 5 actors will bring to life 40 weird and wonderful characters from 10 of the Brothers Grimm’ delightfully twisted tales. Stories featured will include Hansel and Gretel, Little Red Cap and Rumplestiltskin, along with a couple of the lesser known tales such as One Eyes, Two Eyes and Three Eyes and The Musicians of Bremen. The venue for the production is a beautiful 1930s Spiegel Tent called La Gaieté, being shipped to Guildford’s Stoke Park especially for the show from Belgium.

Spiegel Tents, sometimes known as Mirror Tents, were used in the early part of the 20th Century on the continent as mobile dance halls. The use of mirrors created a magical atmosphere, where light and dark came together to create a very special experience.

WALK - Chawton to Bentworth This walk starts and ends in Chawton, well worth a visit in its own right and the home of Jane Austen. Her house is opposite the village car park. The walk description is provided by Guildford Rambling Club, see guildfordramblingclub.org.uk. They also provided the Peaslake walk in July which we accidentally failed to acknowledge – apologies!

The walk 1. Walk back to the A31 roundabout and cross into the road opposite. Go under a bridge (the Watercress Line) and, a little way beyond it, turn left along a lane, Chawton Park Road/National Cycle Route 23. You will now walk more or less straight ahead for almost 2 miles before you turn off. Along the way, you will initially pass a few houses and then the lane becomes a track.

You pass a Chawton Farm information plaque and go through various gates and along a wide grassy avenue through Chawton Park Wood. You ignore various lefts and rights including one very wide track sweeping away left. Shortly after the latter you encounter a fork and take the right-hand branch. Soon after that you turn off, taking the second clear but unsigned path heading away to the right and up through trees.

2. At the top, you reach a fence and walk left looking for a turning off to the right (which may or may not now have a signpost). Here, take this turn right to continue forward, passing a barrier and proceeding along a path which soon merges into a wide vehicle track. Follow this for over half a mile, passing metal gates and barriers, until reaching a small house (on the left-hand side).

Here, take a bridleway right and follow the track until you reach houses and a road. Turn right along the road but immediately take an unsigned path off right, over grass near a house and along a fenced corridor to reach a field. Walk along the left-hand side of this field and the right-hand side of the next to reach a tarmac drive. Go straight across and along the left-hand side of the next field. Keep going forward until reaching a hedge and dropping down through a gap in it onto a wide stony track (Turners Lane). Turn left and walk up into Bentworth, emerging on a road with the Star Inn to your right. At April 2016 the pub was ‘closed until further notice’. This may or may not be still the case when you do the walk. Fear not though. If it is closed you could use the benches opposite for your picnic. And there is another picnic option and another pub a little way further on.

3. Follow the sign to the school and church and then turn right to walk past the school and straight through the churchyard (a possible picnic spot). The path exits the back of the churchyard and continues to meet a road. Go straight across and into a side road signed to Shalden and Alton. Follow this road round to reach the other pub, the Sun. Continue down a hill. Just after some ‘No Limit’ signs and before a side road right, turn right and go through a wide gap in the hedge into a field. Walk around this clockwise, ignoring the obvious path which heads out half-right. At the far left corner of the field go through into the next field and continue along its left-hand edge to enter a third field. Here, walk straight out to the far side to reach Turners Lane again.

4. Turn left. Walk for about 1.5 miles along this wide track which undulates up and down. Reach a road. Turn left and walk along, passing a couple of houses, until you find, next to a large oak tree, a footpath sign pointing right. This path takes you out half-left across a field and through into another, very large, field. Continue forward across it to reach a gate on the other side. Emerge on a track, turn right and walk a few yards to reach the dead end of a road. Turn right and quickly left down a track to reach a busy road. Cross to a track labelled ‘Bushy Leaze Wood’. You will walk about almost three quarters of a mile through this wood. You do it by immediately, at the entry barrier, following a yellow arrow off the very wide main track and branching left, up into the trees. At another yellow arrow you are taken left. Now continue along the path following yellow arrows. Reach and cross a wide gravelled track and continue on, ignoring a quick right turn.

5. The path reaches a 5 way junction with a 2 way signpost. You continue straight ahead along a very wide grassy track. Reach a fork with two yellow arrows.

Branch right. Eventually you will see, on the right-hand side, a yellow arrow on a post but, beware, it is on the back of the post! Turn right and follow the path as it swings left and along the line of a fence. Opposite the start of a track on the left, look for a yellow arrow on a gap in the fence. Follow the path through here and down a slope. This brings you to a road. Turn right and immediately swing sharp left to walk under the Watercress Line, down to the roundabout on the A31 and across into Chawton.

Founded in 1971, when six flower arrangers at a Farncombe church got together, it has gone from strength to strength. Over the years, members have enjoyed taking part in flower festivals at local churches, including Guildford Cathedral and the Chapel at Charterhouse, and have provided floral decoration at civic events on many occasions, including the 800th anniversary Stephen McDonnell - Chichester celebrations of the signing Cathedral Flower Festival 2016 of Magna Carta, when there was a magnificent display at Royal Holloway, University of London. Members are particularly active in the Surrey Area of the National Association of Flower Arrangement Societies, exhibiting regularly at the RHS Wisley Flower Show and Florimania at Hampton Court Palace, and taking part in national and inter-society competitions.

A special treat for everyone in November is an entertaining demonstration by Stephen McDonnell, a seasoned demonstrator from Brighton and winner of many awards at Chelsea Flower Show, including five Gold Medals and two for Best in Show. Stephen enjoys working on large-scale designs, whether for Chelsea, cathedrals or clubs. Gardening is his overriding passion. He is head gardener at a private estate in Sussex, where he is also responsible for a large collection of house plants that includes over three hundred pots of orchids.

This showcase demonstration, open to the public, takes place at the Borough Hall in Bridge Street, Godalming GU7 1HR on Thursday 17th November at 7.30pm. Doors open at 6.30pm for a complimentary welcome drink and with sales stalls to browse. There will be a raffle of Stephen’s arrangements at the end of the evening.
