INDIVIDUAL, THESIS JHANDEWALAN, NEW DELHI ADAPTIVE REUSE, RECREATIONAL CUM RESEARCH CENTRE, LANDSCAPE CONSERVATION

Bhuli Bhatiyari ka Mahal one of the remaining Shikargahs of Firuz Shah Tughlaq, a forgotten gem, exuberating serenity in the ridge in midst of the chaotic centre of the hustling Delhi.

Imagine to connect the citizens to what has always existed, but have grown distant to. Inculcating the idea of loving the nature, growing together and learning together. Converting a 14th century Shikargah which served as an animal hunting shelter and fighting ground behind the iconic Hanuman Temple of Karol Bagh into a recreation which suits the 21st century.

Imagining how Firoze Shah Tughlaq would have built or expanded this mahal with todays contemporary materials at hand, following the activities of citizens in a space designed according his ideals.

The design has been developed with the intention of differentiating the new elements constructed using contemporary construction systems from the original elements of this historical structure but trying to retain the language of structure. With the aim of preserving the buildings past , the intervention does not aim to hide the buildings scars and traces.

STAGE 1 : RESEARCH TOMB OF GHIYASSUDDIN TUGHLAQ

Previous additions to the structure were made for it to be a tourist spot , to be frozen in time , which meant less sheltered inhabitable spaces, inadequate lighting, and false new plaster finishes. The following need to be added to make the building a habitable space.

UNIVERSAL ACCESSIBILITY - Addition of cores to aid the circulation of everyone.

ROOF – It is required to shelter humans and exhibit due to climatic factors.

NATURAL LIGHTING – With a new roof structure but lack of fenestrations due to the stone masonry construction,adequate means of lighting need to be defined.

TEXTURE - New materials added to the complex should not just overpower the old but also must not seem distant.

MATERIAL The construction is load bearing stone masonry and stucco plastered. The stone used is the locally available quartzite procured from the foothills of aravalli.

Other construction materials then used were red sandstone and white marble as observed in the tomb of Ghiyassuddin Tughlaq.

During the choice of the new construction materials it has been kept in mind that the new does not weaken the old building integrity.

Dividing roof into as per lower court and upper court Blocks visual connectivity between the two courts- one of the main features of the structure creates another level as roof of the lower can be made accessible.

Starting with an octagonal tensile inverted umbrella unit to create a pattern which completes the semi six pointed star view. The openings/ voids inlet sunlight with the help of ptfe or pvc stitiching the units together.

Since the tank is the property of NDMC the runoff cannot be drained in the tank hence the terrain and landscape is strategically used to drain the water in the wetland region of the site.

ABOUT THE SITE

The village was captured by the Dagar jats from Ujjain by force in the 15th century. The government acquired their agricultural land in 1950s and 1970s for development of Delhi. Shahpurjat became a hub for startups, fashion design boutiques, cafes and offices. The villagers’ resort to earning by renting out their spaces. Due to lower rents as compared to the neighborhood, the village also serves as temporary shelter to migrants and kaarigars working with the boutiques. It witnessed a massive population growth from 2000 in 1961 to 30000 in 2001 forming a space with complex and unique social cultural patterns.

Segment Analysis

Visual Integration

The most connected segment is the chaupal or the city centre of the village where all the community gatherings , important meetings and discussions. Segragated spaces formed are the streets with residential entries shown in light blue and dark blue lines . These residential colonies are mostly connected through the green streets which are local markets and rental spaces. We observe that as the color gradient grows more towards cooler side the spatial hierarchy shifts towards private functions.

The least accessible spaces on the integration map commute dead ends where we see the culture of the village grow. We spot children playing cricket, hopscotch, woman of the village are somehow limited to these blue streets , chatting up, drying up clothes.

As observed by the analysis and the p poses difficulties for an inexper accessibility onto the routes. The depth value between the boutique streets to the ones having rented warehouses or workshops to the migrant housing is approximately the same, meaning the metric travel distance between them lies in a common range of 250m -350m.

Tulip Analysis The street with minimum angle change, acts as the main backbone of the local commercial character of the village. This street connects all the important village centres i.e. chaupals and houses a few historic ruins . It is observed that percentage of streets opening to the residential colonies bifurcate from the main roads at a range of angles between 70-110 degree.

Acute angles lower visibility and offer more privacy for residential areas.

Due to the onset of the pandemic in midst of the duration of the workshop the last module was altered from an interactive installment to an interactive digital interface.

I chose to develop Pichuk , being a movie buff as a fun game to be able to guess a movie by its poster, celebrating them as graphics. The graphic interface was added through exporting an svg by illustrator.

PROFESSIONAL PRACTICE DECCAN AMALGAM HYDERABAD LAKE RESTORATION

Eco-cultural history of Ibrahim Bagh Cheruvu

As per various historic and traveller accounts the Golconda Fort had an efficient water supply system in the 16th- 17th century. This composed of a network of underground pipes, aquaducts, tanks, water towers, wells and lakes built at varying altitudes to successfully collect and store rain water and to tap and channel underground water. Lakes were an important component in this historic supply system.

The man-made lake of Neknampur Cheruvu is located to the west and at close proxmity to the Golconda Fort, the Neknampur Cheruvu was commissioned by Ibrahim Quli Qutub Shah (1518-1580) and spreads over an area of approximately 100 acres. Conceived to provide water for the royal garden resort of Ibrahim Bagh, it is said that the lake did not receive sufficient water till Nekhnam Khan, a nobleman in the court of Abdullah Qutub Shah (16261672), connected it to lakes (Durgam and Malkam Cheruvu) upstream with the construction of a channel. Hence, to this date the lake is named after him for his contribution in filing it up with water. A bridge, that is also said to have been built by Ibrahim Quli Qutub Shah across the sluice gates, divides the lake into Chinna Cheruvu and Pedda Cheruvu.

Observations: There is a sewage outlet located at the south western edge of the lake. The water from the outlet flows further down and ultimately meets the river Musi.

Visual assessment of lake water An aerial assessment of the pre and post monsoon condition of lake waters since 2003 points to increase in DWF (Dry Water Flow) since 2005. Also eutrophication and greening of lake water is observed leading to the conclusion that untreated sewage was being let into the lake till 2019. A sewage diversion channel was built in 2019 to divert sewage from the two major inlets into the lake to the nala downstream.
